Read and answer Answer the questions. - What does midwife do at the health care centre? - When do you go to the health care centre? Read the text and answer the questions below. Mother and Child Health in Laos The maternal mortality rate in Laos is among the highest in the region. In Laos, the maternal mortality rate is about 470 death per 100,000 live births. Today, the Lao government takes mother and child care as the first priority task in the area of public health. Almost all villages in Laos now have access to health care centre. However, some villages in remote areas still have no access to health care centre. The Ministry of Public Health is now planning to establish health care centre for all villages. In conjunction with the mother health care, the government of Laos pays more attention to the child health care because the infant mortality rate or child mortality rate is also high among the age group of under 5. It is about 98 per 1000 live births. To improve infant mortality rate, the Ministry of Health stresses on immunization and vaccination against diseases for every child. In the near future, the maternal and infant mortality rates will be reduced to a certain level. 3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 141 7/31/2015 9:22:27 AM ສ.ວ.ສ ສະຫງວນລຂ ິ ະສດ ິ

The region therefore has a relatively young population and has a relatively high literacy rate ranging from 80.2 percent to 99 percent. Most ASEAN member countries have diverse cultures, ethnic groups, and dialects, in the population formation of their respective countries. However, all ASEAN member countries have set some collective slogans known as “one vision, one identity, one community” and “a unity in diversity”. To make the communication among member countries easy, the ASEAN leaders have decided to use English language as working language for communicating among member countries. There are a number of conferences, workshops, trainings, and seminars of different levels of government officials each year. In addition, more activities have been organized like cultural exchange, SEA games, and ASEAN Youth Camp. The ASEAN Youth Camp aims to help young people from all countries in the region to meet, work together and learn about their diverse cultures and histories, toward greater solidarity and mutual understanding for the establishment of a strong ASEAN Community. 3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 146 7/31/2015 9:22:27 AM ສ.ວ.ສ ສະຫງວນລຂ ິ ະສດ ິ
