FROM THE PRESIDENT

KARA PETERMAN

Dear friends,

I’m excited to be newly elected as President
of the PVS and to be continuing our 83-year
tradition of service and volunteerism. Despite
my enthusiasm, it wasn’t an easy decision.
Like many in the PVS, I work in a field
unrelated to music. I don’t get to practice as
much as I would like, and clarinet-playing
often takes second fiddle to spending time
with my family and the mundanities of daily
life.

With what little time I have remaining at the end of the day, I want to
spend making music, not dashing off emails or on another Zoom meeting.
But, without the PVS, who would I make music with? Who would provide
orchestral music for our community? This is an uncomfortable thought.
Ultimately, I find inspiration in the strong tradition of leadership
established by the many PVS members who have served before me. We
share the responsibility of running our organization, and right now it is my
turn.

In this holiday season, I ask our community members and those streaming
around the world: what organizations do you hold dear? What can you do
this year to promote their continued health? The PVS relies on donations
of money, time, and talents—which of those can you donate in this season
of giving?

I would like to thank our season sponsors Greenfield Cooperative Bank, the
Massachusetts Cultural Council, New England Public Media, and
Northampton Open Media. We are also proud to receive the support of
more than 30 local businesses and organizations represented in this
program book; please support them by shopping locally.

Thank you for tuning in, and please enjoy the concert!

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

TIANHUI NG

Dear friends,

As the days grow colder and the nights
longer, I have been reflecting on the many
highs and lows of the last two years and
what it means to be a musician during this
complicated time in our shared history.
Faced with uncertainty, isolation, and
change, I am so proud of what we have been
able to do at the Pioneer Valley Symphony.

We have learned and evolved, and our circle of musicians, audiences, and
supporters have adapted with us to connect in new ways around our
shared passion.

This past summer, after more than a year of connecting through screens,
we were fortunate to return to live performance with outdoor events
around the Valley. In-person rehearsals with all our ensembles began in
September. Our staff and board have worked tirelessly to ensure a safe
environment for musicians and audiences, and a new media partnership
with Northampton Open Media has allowed us to create dynamic and
unique streaming concert events that we will be able to look back at with
pride and gratitude.

We are planning a triumphant return to live concert audiences on
Saturday, March 19, 2022, at Tillis Hall at UMass Amherst (formerly the Fine
Arts Center), with San Francisco Symphony associate principal cellist
Amos Yang performing the World Premiere of Andrés Martín’s Vox
concerto, and the rousing Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky. As is the
theme of our Season of Rebirth, this program acknowledges the pain of
the past two years through Martín’s work created in response to the
isolation of the pandemic, and celebrates our collective resilience and
passion for life through the story of The Firebird. Both pieces end as the
PVS intends to move forward—with hope, and looking toward a better
future.

FROM THE CHORUS

E. WAYNE ABERCROMBIE

How good it has been to once again sing together in person! Even with
the precautions, distancing, and omitting of the usual social parts of
rehearsing, singing with our chorus weekly has been special.

Choral singing in the U.S. has always been strong (a survey in 2011 found
over 42 million choral singers!), but it has suffered greatly during the
pandemic. I was glad to be part of the PVS' online singalongs last season
but am overjoyed that the chorus decided to begin meeting again this fall
—with, of course, great precautions in place.

In today's concert, we are singing works from three iconic composers
from three distinct stylistic periods: Vivaldi’s Magnificat setting, from the
early 1700s; Mozart’s heavenly Ave verum corpus, written as a gift to a
friend in the 1790s; and Mendelssohn’s Verleih uns Frieden, from the early
1800s. Each blends four-voice chorus with orchestra varied according to
the period in which it was composed: reduced strings and two oboes,
strings only, and strings and winds.

We also join the orchestra in distinctly different styles, from Jerry Noble’s
calypso beats to singalong favorites. Listeners are welcome to sing along
at home with all of the music you recognize!

FROM THE YOUTH ORCHESTRA

STEVEN BATHORY-PEELER

Hello Music Lovers! Thank you for joining us for our holiday program. The
PVS Youth Orchestra is delighted to be a part of this festive program.
Sitting side-by-side with the adult musicians of the symphony orchestra is
always an exciting and educational part of our season. And nothing gets
us in the holiday mood like holiday music!

We join the entire PVS family in wishing you and your family a happy
holiday season.

TIANHUI NG

MUSIC DIRECTOR

The American Prize-winning conductor
Tianhui Ng has been the Music Director of
the Pioneer Valley Symphony since the
2018-2019 season. Tian is also the Music
Director of the Mount Holyoke College
Symphony Orchestra (USA) and the Victory
Players (USA).

An advocate of new music, he is especially trusted for his work in
introducing audiences to new and less familiar music. He has assisted
in and premiered new works by Pulitzer and Rome Prize winners and
many young composers. His 2014 premiere of Mary D. Watkins’ Civil
Rights opera, Dark River, was critically acclaimed in the United States.
He later adapted this piece to a community singalong format which
he premiered with the Pioneer Valley Symphony in July 2020.

Tian’s irrepressible musical spirit first expressed itself when he
conducted a choir of kindergarten children in his native Singapore at
the age of five. A pianist, singer, and trombonist, he later studied
composition and early music at the University of Birmingham (UK)
where he discovered his love for Stravinsky and contemporary music.
Returning home, he helped found one of the first contemporary
music ensembles in the country and was soon composing for
animation, dance, film, chorus, and orchestra. It was during this time
that he discovered his affinity for interdisciplinary work and created
the groundbreaking site-specific community-based arts festival,
NOMAD, with which he has won awards from the Singapore National
Arts Council. His works have since been heard in diverse settings such
as the Hong Kong Film Festival, Animation World Magazine (USA),
and Apsara Asia Dance (Singapore). Tian continued his education at
the Yale School of Music (USA) where he helped to start a new
tradition with the music of his graduation recital reflecting on war
and conflict.

where he lay
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay Mary had a baby, aye Lord
The people keep a-comin'
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes but the train done gone
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes What did she name him, aye Lord
I love thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky The people keep a-comin'
And stay by my cradle 'til morning is nigh bu the train done gone
The Virgin Mary had a baby boy
Bring a torch, Jeanette Isabella and they say that his name was Jesus
Bring a torch to the cradle, run! He come from the Glory
It is Jesus, good folk of the village He come from Glorious Kingdom
Christ is born and Mary's calling
Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the mother Mooma, mooma
Ah! Ah! Beautiful is her son Would ya like to join your sonny
I am over here
It is wrong while the baby is sleeping Happy in the mother country
It is wrong to talk so loud Darling for de Christmas
Silence now as you gather around Your son would be really jumpin'
Lest your noise should waken Jesus Listen to the chorus
Hush! Hush! See how the babe is sleeping Of what we all be singin'
Hush! Hush! Peacefully now he dreams Drink a rum and a punch a crema
It's Christmas morning
I saw three ships come sailing in Drink a rum and a punch a crema
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day
I saw three ships come sailing in Joy to the world, the Lord is come
On Christmas Day in the morning Let earth receive her king
Let ev'ry heart prepare him room
And what was in those ships all three And heav'n and nature sing
On Christmas Day on Christmas Day
And what was in those ships all three Drink a rum and a punch a crema
On Christmas Day in the morning Drink a rum!
