Mauku Public Cemetery
Located next to St Brides church in Findlay Road, Mauku, the cemetery
is approximately 13kms from Pukekohe. Entry is through a gate which
is kept closed and because the cemetery is set well back from the road
there is ample parking on the grass. At the entrance there is an
enclosed plot for the Finlay family.
Burial Records are held by Auckland Council at Manukau Memorial
Gardens.

Mr I W JOLLY 25th April 1980 and
updated by members of the South Auckland Genealogists in
1985.
In 2015 the Franklin Branch NZSG undertook a project of
photographing and transcribing cemeteries in the old Franklin
area. This cemetery was photographed and transcribed by
members of the Franklin Branch New Zealand Society of
Genealogists in March 2016. The plots are numbered from 1 to

Presbyterian Church
The cemetery is located next to the church which stands on the eastern side and on the highest rim
of a crater basin, 5kms East of Pukekohe on Runciman Road. This little church rich in history was
stockaded and occupied as a garrison-house in 1863 when it was the scene of an attack by a strong
war party of Kingite Maoris. Bullet holes can still be seen in the walls and on the headstone of Betsy
HODGE who died on 3rd July 1862. Betsy HODGE is the earliest recorded burial in the cemetery.
Six Maori were buried in the cemetery and a plaque on a large rock commemorates all Maori who
lost their lives in the engagement of 14 September 1863.
The cemetery was transcribed in July 1979 by Mrs G Gibson, Papakura. Additions to transcripts were
done in 1998 by members of the Pukekohe Branch, NZSG. The cemetery was photographed and
transcribed by members of the Franklin Branch New Zealand Society of Genealogists during 2016.

St.Bride’s Anglican Church
Mauku
This picturesque church sits on a rise with a commanding view
of the surrounding countryside.
Designed by Dr A G Purchas and built in 1860-61, this "Selwyn"
church retains the loopholes which betray its frontier origins. It
was garrisoned in the Waikato war in 1863 with some 600
troops camped in the vicinity. After further improvements to
the interior of the church in 1884 it was finally consecrated by
Bishop Cowie on 22 February 1885.
The cemetery stretches down the hill to Findlay Rd and
contains approximately 155 graves. The older part of the
cemetery lies on the eastern side of the church.
