HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
Welcome to the Module in “FABRICATING AND INSTALLING WOODEN
CABINET”. This module contains training materials and activities and activities
for you to complete.
The unit of competency “FABRICATE AND INSTALL WOODEN CABINET”
contains the knowledge, skills and attitudes for a CARPENTRY NC II course.
You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete
each of the learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcomes there are
INFORMATION SHEETS, JOB SHEETS, AND OPERATION SHEETS. Follow these
activities on our own and answer the Self-Check at the end of each learning
activity.
If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator assistance.

INTRODUCTION:
This module contains information and suggested learning activities on
CARPENTRY II. It includes instruction and procedure on how Fabricate, install
and remove wooden formworks
Completion of this module will help you better understand the succeeding module
on Preparing Laying out reference lines.

The history behind cabinet making is important to us. One of the oldest building
materials is wood. The methods of working with wood have evolved and advanced
over the ages. Some of the oldest archaeological evidence of carpentry was found
in China (the Nanchan Temple) and date back to the Neolithic period.
Carpentry methods from pre-history are rarely found as both methods and
teachings were usually passed down through generations.
Nanchan Temple was built in 782 during China’s Tang dynasty, and its Great
Buddha Hall is currently China’s oldest preserved timber building extant.
There are some surviving historic wooden buildings in the world. Some samples of
these buildings are the temples in China such as the Nanchan Temple built in 782
C.E
DEVELOPMENT
The industrial revolution brought many different inventions. This changed the
design of the traditional timber framing. The inventions of the circular saw led to
the development of the balloon framing. This was a major step for the evolution of
carpentry as a whole.
The development of electrical tools in the 19th and 20th century improved the
quality and speed among carpenters and their work.
CABINET MAKER
A cabinet maker is a carpenter who does fine and detailed work specializing in the
making of cabinets, tables, wood, wardrobes, and other furniture.
After World War II ended, woodworking became a popular hobby among middle
class citizens. The highly skilled amateurs enjoyed this hobby and would turn out
pieces of furniture what rival the work of professional cabinet makers today.
Today, our Cabinet makers construct very detailed one-off piece for example,
bespoke reception desks, Solid wood and Resin Counter tops. They also
manufacture many pieces of bespoke furniture.

TRAINING
These days there is a lot that goes into becoming a carpenter. Cabinet makers
would carry out the following on a daily basis: cutting, shaping and joining wood
and wood-based products together using a wide range of hand tools, e.g. hammer,
saw, planes and chisels. They also use power tools and large machines that are
constantly evolving with the times. When somebody decides they want to become a
carpenter they have to study drawings, perform craft calculations and select
materials to meet design requirements.
Today an apprentice carpenter will complete a 4 year course containing 7 phases.
The 7 phases are split up between the work place and the training college.
Carpentry has moved to a whole new level. One of a kind pieces are designed and
made with the help of many hand tools and personal skill. We have grown with the
changes constantly being introduced to woodwork and cabinet making. All of our
cabinet makers are highly skilled which has helped maintain their high standard
in workmanship to date.
A CABINET is a box-shaped piece of furniture with doors and/or drawers for
storing miscellaneous items. Some cabinets standalone while others are built in to
a wall or are attached to it like a medicine cabinet.
Cabinets are typically made of wood (solid or with veneers or artificial surfaces),
coated steel (common for medicine cabinets), or synthetic materials. Commercial
grade cabinets, which differ in the materials used, are called casework, case
goods, or case furniture.
Cabinets usually have one or more doors on the front, which are mounted with
door hardware, and occasionally a lock. Cabinets may have one or more doors,
drawers, and/or shelves. Short cabinets often have a finished surface on top that
can be used for display, or as a working surface, such as the countertops found in
kitchens.
A cabinet intended to be used in a bedroom and with several drawers typically
placed one above another in one or more columns intended for clothing and small
articles is called a chest of drawers. A small bedside cabinet is more frequently
called a nightstand or night table. A tall cabinet intended for clothing storage
including hanging of clothes is called a wardrobe or an armoire, or (in some
countries) a closet if built-in.

TYPES AND USES OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
The use of protective clothing and equipment is not the solution for preventing
accident.
It is most important that the primary protection against accidents is to identify
possible hazards and take the necessary safety measure to eliminate the hazard.
When necessary, workers should be provided with protective clothing and other
personal protective equipment.
1. EYE AND FACE PROTECTION Goggles and face protection must be worn to
protect workers from flying particles, liquid chemicals, acids, chemical gases
or vapors. Workers must also be protected from radiation during welding,
touching, soldering, brazing and other operations that emit light.
2. HEAD PROTECTION Hard hats must be worn where there is danger of
falling objects. Specialized hard hats are required to reduce electrical shock
hazards.
3. FOOT PROTECTION Safety shoes with impact protection are required in
work areas where heavy objects or tool could be accidentally dropped on the
feet. Safety shoes with puncture protection are required when working
around nails, wires, tacks, scrap metal and other objects that could pierce
the feet.
4. HAND PROTECTION Gloves are required to protect workers from cuts,
scrapes, punctures, burns, chemical absorption or extreme temperature
5. HEARING PROTECTION Appropriate ear muffs or ear plugs should be worn
to lessen the noise in the workplace.
6. RESPIRATORS: Appropriate respirators must be worn as a last resort if it is
not possible to ventilate the work area properly.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED FABRICATING AND INSTALLING

It is very important to know that the name and proper use of each of the various
tools we need in our works. In addition, application on their proper care and
maintenance will give you the following advantages: efficiency of the work, quality
speed and accomplishment and accuracy.
1. CLAW HAMMER is used for driving and pulling out nails.
2. WATER HOSE LEVEL is used to determine the horizontal levelness of a
particular object.
3. BAR LEVEL is a tool used to test the horizontal levelness of the surfaces of
material. It is framed in aluminum or wood.
4. STEEL SQUARE is a L-shaped with one arm forming a perfect right angle to the
other. It used to check the squareness of a corner.

COMPANY RULES AND REGULATIONS
To avoid headache and unnecessary expenses, make sure that all necessary
permits of logs are secured from local authorities concerned before any activity in
the workshop.
1. Section 68 of PD 705, as amended, prohibits and punishes anyone who shall
cut, gather, collect or remove timber or other forest products without
authority, from any forest land, from any alienable or disposal public lands, or
from private land.
2. Moreover, the cutting specifically of Narra and other premium hardwood trees
requires special permit under DENR (Department of Environment and Natural
Resources) Adm. Order No. 78, S. of 1987 and DENR Memo Circular No.22, S.
of 1990. And under DENR Memorandum Order dated February 5, 2013, the
cutting of Narra needs to be approved by the DENR Central Office, particularly
by the Office of the Undersecretary for field Operations.
3. The offenders and/or persons liable and subject to arrest with warrant or in
instances without warrant, with respect to prohibited acts above are the
following: the cutter, gatherer, collector, receiver, and the possessor, or in the
case of a corporation, the officer or officers who appear to be responsible to the
commission of the offense.
4. All tools and equipment used in committing the offense shall be confiscated
and seized and forfeited in favor of the government.
5. The violation of RA 3571 is punishable by prison correctional in its minimum
period to prison mayor in its minimum period.
6. The violation of Section 68, PD 705, as amended, is punishable as qualified
thief under article 310 in relation to Article 309 of the Revised Penal Code and
whose penalty may range from a few months to as long as 20 years of
imprisonment depending on the total worth or value of the stolen goods.
7. For instance, in a case involving 111 board feet of lumber and logs worth P20,
930.40 from a Narra tree cut in a private lot, the offender was penalized by the
court four (4) months and one (1) day of arresto mayor, as minimum, to three
(3) years, four (4) months and twenty (20) days of prison correctional
(Sarmiento Merida vs. People of the Philippine, GR No. 158182).

PROCEDURE IN ASSEMBLING A WOODEN CABINET
STEP 1: Prepare the Case
Panels
To start with, cut a full sheet of
plywood into more manageable
sizes with a circular saw. It's
much safer and easier to take
half size sheets of plywood to
the table saw than a full size
sheet when possible, used
cheap 3/4” pine plywood for
this.
At the table saw things are
much easier. The main pieces to
cut here are the side panels, the
bottom shelves, and then rip the
remaining strips that will later
be cut to length.
Each side piece receives a 3” x 3” notch in the bottom front corner. This is for a toe
kick. Two vanities so four sides total get this notch. A good blade in a jigsaw
makes a huge difference in cut quality. These cuts felt the same as if they were
made with my table saw.

Frame Pieces
A cabinet face frame is the front
frame of a cabinet that will
establish the location of all of
the doors and drawers as well
as give some structural stiffness
to the rest of the case.
The overall size of the face frame
is determined by how many
doors and drawers you want to
have. Specific dimensions are
covered. All of the face frame
pieces were ripped from 1 x 6
pine boards.
Get asked what I do to prevent my boards from warping. The general construction
method for these cabinets is pocket holes. There are a lot of different pocket hole
jigs and machines out there that will all complete the same task. If you are doing a
lot of projects using pocket holes a pocket hole machine may be a justifiable
option for you.

so you will never see them.
To give a little more support to the top perimeter of the cabinet as well as provide a
surface to screw through to secure the countertop a couple strips of plywood are
attached to the top inside of the side panels.

PROCEDURE IN ASSEMBLING A WOODEN CABINET DRAWER
STEP 1: DOOR PREP AND BUILDING THE DRAWERS
Pre-stained the, 3/4” plywood panel that will be cut for all of the doors.
The drawer bodies were just 3/4” plywood pocket hole screwed together with 3/8”
plywood glued and nailed directly to the bottom. Quick and easy. Exact
dimensions to follow.

For mounting the drawer slides see the instructions that came with your specific
style drawer slide you chose. With the drawer slides mounted on the bottom of the
drawers and in the cabinet I made sure everything fit.
The drawer fronts were nothing more than a 1 x 6 cut to length. Cut all of the
drawer fronts out of a continuous board so the grain would flow from one drawer
to the next.
STEP 2: BUILDING THE CABINET DOORS
A grove is cut with a regular table saw blade on all of the door rails and styles to fit
the plywood panels.

Used dado blade to cut the tongues on the ends of rails. This was a lot easier to
dial in than I thought it would be. Just use a test block to sneak up on your fit.
Use glue on the tongues of the door frame and left the interior panel floating but if
you are using plywood you can use glue on the plywood panels as well if you want.
And the last step is to install the door hinges. Don’t put any door or drawer pulls
on these as the person who was going to get these wanted to install them herself.

Step 5: Install the upper cabinets
Draw a level line 19-1/2 in. above the lower cabinets and mark the upper cabinet
positions. Screw a 1×2 ledger to the wall even with the level line. The only tricky
part about installing hanging upper cabinets is supporting them in exactly the
right position while you screw them to the wall and one another. That’s a tough,
awkward task, especially if you’re working alone. The ledger method simplifies
this. It’s a fail-safe method, but you’ll have to accept a bit of patching and paint
retouching to repair the screw holes left from the ledger.
Step 6: Finish with doors and trim
Replace the drawers, then rehang the doors and adjust the hinges to align the
doors with one another.

cleaning techniques in wet and dry areas.
INTRODUCTION
Cleaning tasks are often divided into “dry” and “wet” activities. Equipment and
techniques in cleaning areas depends on the area to be cleaned.
The types of surfaces that are usually wet or require water to clean them include:

Concrete
Like the process involved in assessing wet areas to be cleaned, there are some
points to keep in mind:

When is an immediate clean required?
When is the most appropriate time to clean it to keep

When deciding the best equipment to clean a dry area or using a wet cleaning
method, the type of surface to be cleaned is important.
