ALL IN THE FAMILY

Nor-Cal Beverage was founded by Roy Deary in 1937 with four employees. Today it is in its third generation
of ownership. In addition to Shannon Deary-Bell at the helm, her father Don Deary is chairman of the board;
nine family members work for the company and two are active board members. It’s not surprising, then,
that Nor-Cal is a founding member of The Family Business Association, which represents California’s some
1.4 million businesses and provides incentives to create jobs and invest in the state.
The company employs 500 (and ramps up to around 650 during seasonal upswings). The majority of
employees have more than 20 years of experience. Deary-Bell notes this is well above national employment
averages, and attests to both employee dedication to a family business, as well as the family’s dedication to
develop and support the people who work for them. “They’re part of the extended Deary family,” she says.
She also points out that despite the company’s heavy investment in the latest technologies to handle pro-
duction, quality control and logistics, a real person always answers the company phone. “When customers
call, they can expect us to provide an answer as quickly as we can,” she says. “We pride ourselves on great
customer service, delivered with integrity. It’s a family tradition.”
