Healthcare

Variety’s Health Care Program supports organizations
that provide therapy and camps for children who are
battling illnesses. Interactive music therapy programs
immerse kids in the joy of creating music. For children
confined to hospitals due to chronic or life-threatening
illnesses, Variety helps fund programs that bring the
magic of the movies right to their rooms, allowing
them to experience the fun, excitement, and
momentary escape a movie can provide.

Camps for young burn survivors allow kids to be kids in
a fun and inclusive camp environment that encourages
healing, personal growth and character development
in a natural setting. Specialized care camps bring hope
and happiness to kids affected by cancer.

“Our beautiful 5 year old daughter Kaiden had a wonderful
smile on her face the whole day today. Best of all, she didn’t
think of the awful cancer she’s been fighting since she was
3 years old. As her mother, not a day goes by that I am not
scared and terrified for her, however, today we both were
able to escape cancer and just play.” —Kaiden’s Mom

I love my dad for:

When I didn’t know what to do about college, he checked out
a book on New Jersey Colleges and Universities from the local
library (I lived in California at the time) and took me on an East
Coast college tour, visiting them with me one by one. If it wasn’t
for him, who knows where I would have ended up (not Jersey).
When I was growing up, my dad made sure that I had movie
passes to every movie theater within 20 miles of my house. I was
definitely the cool kid (thanks to those sweet friendship perks).
He always has the best stories and quips, and he WILL turn
your mood around instantly.
If you want to wallow in misery, don’t hang out with him.
Just do not do it.
He is entirely self-made, and that combined with his intelligence,
fierce work ethic, and knack for winning have made him a role
model for me since before I was old enough to be able to put a
finger on why he was so great.
I was a onetime scaredy-cat, but he never gave up on turning me
into a skier and rollercoaster lover because he knew I would enjoy
them. He eventually succeeded.
He’s a great cook and he likes to take care of his family by
preparing our favorite meals. Thank you Dad, for the chicken
enchiladas whenever I visit!
When I was going through a really tough breakup a few years
ago, my dad called me every day for weeks to make sure I was do-
ing okay. To this day, my dad calls me every Sunday. I should be
the one calling him, but there he is, right on schedule, checkin’ in.

I want to congratulate him for
this well-deserved honor. I’d like to
recognize him as well for the great
human being that he is.

Love you, Sarah

When I was growing up, baseball was my
favorite bonding experience that I shared
with my father and brother. In addition to
our Yankee season tickets, we got halfway
to our goal of seeing a game at every MLB
stadium before college and other life
obligations got in the way. Even though my
interest in baseball has waned over the years,
I’ll never forget all the great times we spent
together at the ballpark.

We ran through the streets in the Bronx, high-fiving strangers
after watching the Yankees make an incredible 9 run comeback
against the Rangers. We toughed out a rain delay in Kansas City
and congratulated a security guard after he tackled a fan who ran
out on the field to play on the wet tarp. We joined in with a
heckler who spent the game shouting “nobody likes you, Manny,”
regardless of whether Manny Ramirez was actually at the
plate or not.
Probably my favorite baseball memory of all with my dad comes
from a game in Cleveland. It was a dreary September day and
the Indians had been lousy all season, so the stadium was almost
empty. We were right above one of the dugouts, and we noticed
that the third base coach was named Butterfield. For some
reason, we decided to start cheering for him. Pretty soon, the
whole section was in on it. Every base hit was “great swing,
Butterfield!” Every routine ground ball was “nice play,
Butterfield!” The coach kept turning around and shooting us looks,
half amused and half baffled. Even though it was a lousy ball-
game, it was a great day for us three goofballs in the stands.

What turned these incidences into the
memories of a lifetime was spending them
with our dad. Congratulations, Dad, on
another well deserved honor!

You are the best!

Love, Your Boys

Education

Variety’s Education Program provides
underprivileged children and at-risk youth the
programs necessary to pursue their education and
dreams, and overcome the barriers of poverty and
high levels of unemployment with literacy programs,
college scholarships, college prep, and career
readiness counseling.

Fraylin Gramajo is one of Variety’s exceptional
Scholarship Recipients. He is attending UC Berkeley
and plans to make a difference in his community
when he graduates in 2018:

“This summer I completed an internship with the US
Attorney’s Office. It is probably the best experience of
my career as a student. I had the opportunity to help
prosecute people who are harming our society. And in
my downtime, I had the opportunity to witness multiple
cases on trial. It was honestly a fulfilling experience.
But, the arguably best part is that it solidified my desire
to become a Federal Prosecutor. I will do everything
I can to fulfill this dream. Serving my community will
continue to play a significant role in my career, just like
the Variety Boys & Girls Club has taught me.”

“If you would have asked me seven years ago about my
future plans, getting a college degree was never one of
them. Nonetheless, I am at the final stage. Thank you
for everything you have done for me...your investment
in me will not go in vain.” —Fraylin Gramajo

Mobility

Variety’s Mobility Program provides confidence,
freedom, and much-needed therapeutic exercise
to children with disabilities by providing specially-
designed adaptive bikes, strollers, and other
mobility equipment. These bikes are not covered
by insurance and are often out of reach financially
for families caring for children with special needs.

In honor of its 75th Anniversary, Variety of
Southern California gave away 75 adaptive bikes
to 75 Southern California children with disabilities.
Many of these children cannot walk on their own,
so when they receive a bike specially designed for
their needs, their disabilities fade away and they
experience the pure joy of riding a bike like any
other kid.

Valerie is a 5 year old girl with a severe degenerative
disorder. “My daughter is the sweetest girl and very
active but because her muscles are too weak to ride a
regular bike, she cannot play with the other kids and
has to play by herself. I saw this awesome bike that will
improve her weakness and help her a lot as a therapy. I
believe that this bike will make a lot of difference in
our lives!” —Valerie’s Mom

Dad,

It is no surprise to us that you have been awarded the 2017 Lifetime
Achievement Award. Your many accomplishments in this industry are
well known and your guidance and leadership has affected many people
who have been fortunate to be a part of your journey.

As I reflect on my life, I realize that much of my success, personally and professionally, is due to your
influence. Without you steering me on the right path I wouldn’t be where I am today. Your love and
support has helped mold who I am as a person and for that I say, “Thank You!” Your passion for the film
industry is infectious and at a very young age I knew that I wanted to be a part of it too. I am extremely
grateful to be in this business and I will try my best to follow your lead.
Everyone in the industry who has been on your “Team” over the years has had the opportunity to get
to know someone who is incredibly smart, personable, funny, considerate, caring and humble. We are
so proud of you and there is no one more deserving of this award! Congratulations and thank you for
being an amazing father, father-in-law and grandfather!

We Love You!
David, Claudia, Evan, Tyler and Hailey
