A Time to Celebrate. The 125th Anniversary of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. The 12th Year of the revitalized Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa. Pandemic be damned - we are back to publishing a magazine and killing a small number of trees. I hope that you are as excited to receive this issue of our award-winning magazine as I am relieved to have completed it and gotten it out the door, and as overjoyed as our printing partner to once again be paid to print this very copy. I hope that you and yours are in good health and high spirits. I hope that new family members serve to amaze and excite you. And I hope that memories of those we have lost during these past years now serve to comfort and compel you. While many businesses fail within five years following incorporation, your alumni association is chugging along. Perhaps with fewer members, but we hope that you will step forward and help with recruiting and renewals and make our 12th year a record-breaking triumph. We hope that you will carefully consider supporting our initiatives, and stepping forward to make our 12th year a memorable year. We hope that you will read each and every page of this issue. The topics are many, but each and every one of them remain consistent with our Cardinal Principles: To Promote Brotherhood, Stimulate Scholarship and Develop Character. For some of you, some of the content herein may be a review; for some of you it will be new again. For all we hope that it will serve as evidence that our reason for being is to lend our Time, Talent and Treasure to the benefit of all members of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland. Enjoy the read. Sincerely...and always Damn Proud, President, Creative Director, Publisher Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa 2 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Executive Committee Todd B. I am pleased to have been elected Eta Chapter President of Phi Sigma Kappa. This position has been held by exceptional brothers in the past. I will follow in these brothers’ footsteps and make sure that I uphold our three cardinal principles. As President, I represent the fraternity to greek councils, the University, and our alumni. Our chapter is becoming one of the great houses on campus, and I want to keep this momentum. My goal is to leave this fraternity in a better place than when I found it - making sure that we focus on upholding our cardinal principles will be the key to improving this chapter. I look forward to the year ahead and improving the Eta chapter in the best way possible. The first semester has been eventful. We had a successful fall rush, which resulted in 5 outstanding men joining our brotherhood. Our rush chairs worked very hard to ensure that we got the best new members possible. In our spring associate member class, we had 25 bright young men. It is already clear these young men are making great strides to improve our chapter. During homecoming week, we had our annual Alumni Tailgate. The tailgate was a huge success, with almost 100 brothers past and present showing up. I let the active brothers know about the no-shotgunning rule, and they all definitely listened to me. Especially post-pandemic, connecting with alumni in person and having a good time was very refreshing. The chapter when straight from the tailgate to the football stadium, where we watched our mighty Terps defeat the Hoosiers. I am already looking forward to our next tailgate, and I hope to see you all there. Our chapter also participated in the homecoming week festivities. We were paired with Delta Phi Epsilon and had a fantastic week. We had many fun events, including a bonfire with smores and an ice cream event. Halloween fell during homecoming week, and the brothers did not disappoint. The Phi Sig boys had the best costumes in all of College Park. We also had our hayride dated, where we went to a local farm and made smores, sat by a bonfire, and went on hayrides with our dates. It was one of the most enjoyable nights of the semester, and the brothers and their dates had a wonderful time. In November, our brotherhood enjoyed a weekend trip to Deep Creek, Maryland. The brothers had a fantastic time enjoying the scenery and getting a much-needed break from College Park. The Fall 2021 academic report was released with the Eta chapter once again in the top three for IFC chapter GPA. We pride ourselves on upholding one of our cardinal principles, scholarship. The Eta Chapter has cemented itself as one of the most respected and acclaimed chapters at the University of Maryland. I am damn proud of this chapter and the future to come. News From Our (New) House Mother, Jailyn Morris 6 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Hi, Eta Alumni! My name is Jailyn Morris, and I am the new Resident Director, or House Mom as many of you know it, of Phi Sigma Kappa! I am so excited to be in this position and to get to know all of the guys in the house, as well as some of you! While in my role as Resident Director, I will be studying to get my Master of Public Health degree, with a concentration in physical activity. I was raised in Prince George’s County my entire life and have always loved it here. I attended St. John’s College High School in Washington, DC, where I was captain of the girls’ varsity track and field team! I went on to run track at Towson University for my first two years of undergraduate studies, but it was always my dream to attend the University of Maryland, like my mother did. So, I transferred here going into my junior year and it was the best decision I’ve made yet! My father is a basketball and track coach, so I am very much a sports girl because of him! My favorite football team is the Washington Commanders (go burgundy and gold!) and I love watching college basketball! I hope to become a track coach myself one day, when I have a little bit more free time! I’ve had the best time being the House Mom for the wonderful men of Phi Sigma Kappa. I have been surrounded by very kind gentlemen who never fail to offer their help in any way they can! I’m so excited to continue in my role with this group of men and I can’t wait to see the great things they go on to do! Some may experience it throughout their life in sports teams or fine art groups, but as a child in a military family moving every other year or so, brotherhood always felt like it was reserved for someone else. I decided to join Phi Sigma Kappa because I felt the great potential that existed for fraternity and brotherhood, and I am forever grateful that I did. Phi Sigma Kappa has provided me the chance to enjoy the wondrous opportunities of group belonging that I had never experienced before. Why I Joined...
Cavalry Charge! In April of 2020, just a month after “Giving Day” - the one day each year when we raise funds for our (now Endowed) Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund, the University of Maryland’s Division of Student Affairs put out an emergency call for donors to replenish the UMD Student Crisis Fund. The Student Crisis Fund had been depleted as applications surged with the COVID outbreak. It is with great pride and sincere thanks that we recognize the Brothers of the Eta Chapter who were able to step forward and, like the Cavalry, charge in the direction of where help was needed most. No other fraternity at the University of Maryland could conduct a hugely successful "Giving Day" fundraiser on March 4th and, in the midst of a tremendous world crisis and just three weeks later, enter the battle to support UMD students in dire straights. Once More, Into the Breech! In December of 2019, the President of the Eta Chapter put forth a call for alumni assistance with funding needed to cover the costs of sending our active members to the Phi Sigma Kappa Conclave. It took just days, and seven Brothers of the Eta Chapter, to raise the money needed to send our actives to this worthwhile learning event. September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 9 ...and About that Tailgate! On October 30th, 2021, the brave and the hearty (and the double-vaccinated) once again came out into the light of day, accompanied in many cases by family members aplenty, to revitalize our tradition of holding a blowout alumni tailgate at Homecoming. Deftly arranged, once again, by the ultimate Social Chairman and Second Vice President of your alumni association, John J. B. Wright, Esq., ‘82, our event featured a huge tent, custom-made omelets and a pile of extra bacon so high that, frankly, it made it impossible to take any photos at the event. Of course, we also had an excellent supply of pregame beverages, a visit from Testudo and Athletic Director Damon Evans, and a few UMD Cheerleaders stopped by to thank us all for our unwavering support for the Maryland Terrapins. But, enough from us - let’s hear what the attendees had to say: The tailgate was fantastic. Great job by John Wright and the whole alumni association gang as always. Thanks for a great day! Thanks, David M. Schwartz ‘91 Joe, Thanks for another great alumni event! Thanks to you, John, all the Actives, and the event committee! Great PSK turnout! Great food - always love the omelets! Great game - always nice to win a close one! Harry T. Murphy ’70 My former room mate (Phil Cole), I and our wives attended the Phi Sig Tailgate. What great hospitality. Plenty to eat and drink, and an opportunity to reconnect with other brothers. As one of my coaches used to say " yoh dun good" A special thanks to John Wright and his wife for getting us tickets. Dam Proud, Lance W. Billingsley ’61 I give the Eta Tailgate 5 stars! Alumni from many decades attended. Great omelettes and "accompaniments." Cecil Given '68 From what I gathered, a great event. The mid--1960's crew was well represented. I rarely go more than 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and, of course, until they rename Byrd Stadium Byrd Stadium and play all choruses of Maryland My Maryland and allow me to carry my handgun (which I am licensed to do in 40 states) I must remain in Delaware. BTW, the game was not televised on Verizon cable -- in OC or Catonsville and Ellicott City. It was televised on Comcast. Thanks for all you do. You are the mainstay of the Alumni Association. Dennis W. Sirman ‘67 Thanks to Joe Criscuoli, John Wright, and on behalf of the guys of the 60’s to Cecil Given, for putting this together. Even the weather cooperated when the clouds and the Hoosiers tried to put a damper on the day. A great location for the Tailgate, especially with the Big Ten Network having its Saturday show there. Even though the ranks of the guys from the 60’s are thinning because of Father Time, it was great to be able to see those who were able to make it, and some of those who were not there were there in spirit e.g. Wags. The omelets were terrific, there was even Corona for me, the football team put up 38 points and squeaked out a win against the Hoosiers, and after the game some of us retreated to the bar at the Marriott Conference Center. I even found time, before the Tailgate, to re-trace my steps from my Freshman dorm and the surrounding environs, ride around Fraternity Row, College Ave., etc. A trip down Memory Lane. Thanks again for all you do. Ronald G. Rayne, Esq. ‘64
The Tale of the Pocket Watch Subject: Old fraternity Pocket watch found Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2019 11:03:57 -0700 From: Nancy M. Herr To: Joe Criscuoli Hi Joe, As we were cleaning out my father in laws house we found and old Phi Sigma Kappa Pocket watch from University of Maryland . We are trying to determine who it belonged to if you have old member records. Early 1900’s I assume. Most likely last name Herr. Could have been family members including Ober S Herr, Frank Trump Herr, William Mather, or any other Herr or McDaniel family members. This is the McDaniel family of McDaniel college. https://www.geni.com/people/FrancisHerr/6000000032422355290 If you can help I’d really appreciate it. Herr CC: Anne S.K. Turkos Hi, Nancy, Thanks very much for your inquiry and for the terrific photo of the pocket watch you have found. In answer to your question, in our Eta Chapter “Chapter Eternal" (a listing of Brothers deceased) I did find the following: Herr, Frank T. Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa University of Maryland Class of 1912 This seems to match your offered listing of "Frank Trump Herr." I will change our listing to reflect the full middle name you have provided. No other Herr Listed No "Mather" Listed No "McDaniel" Listed Interesting fact: The Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was chartered as the 7th Chapter of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity in 1897 in Baltimore, MD (which was at that time the location of the University of Maryland). The Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa did not relocate to College Park, its current home at the flagship campus of the University of Maryland, until 1922. You can read more about this at https://issuu.com/jcriscuoli/ docs/eta_history I do not have access to a yearbook from the University of Maryland for 1912 (in Baltimore). The yearbook for the Maryland Agricultural College (the school that was located in College Park before 1922) does not make a reference to the Baltimore location of the University of Maryland. But, I have a very good friend who is the University of Maryland Archivist Emeritia and I know that she enjoys a challenge. Perhaps she can bring us closer to a photo of Brother Herr, and/or the members of the Eta Chapter, in 1912. Is it possible to locate the book from August or September of 1920 to see if it is noted that Frank Trump Herr, a dentist from Westminster, MD and graduate of the school, had passed and why? We found his Obituary and note in the Carroll County Times archives stating he was in critical condition. We just don’t know what happened. The Tale of the Pocket Watch (cont.) chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa in the 1912 Terra Mariae, the yearbook for the University of Maryland professional schools in Baltimore . Since the dental school is not here in College Park, we don't have a lot of material about their graduates. You might try contacting Scott Swank at the National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore to see if he has additional information on Dr. Trump; his email address is: SSwank@umaryland.edu. It looks like the book where you found the reference to Dr. Herr is a publication that would have originated on the Baltimore campus, since our campus here in College Park was not called the University of Maryland until 1920. Perhaps Mr. Swank will know something about this volume and can help locate a similar one for 1920. I did not find Trump Herr mentioned in the Baltimore Sun newspaper in 1920. The listing in the local paper may be the best you can do, and you may need to dig further into the Carroll County Times to see if you can find more. Hopefully the images that I have sent will be helpful. I wish you much success in your continued research. Anne S. K. September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 17 Every Picture Tells a Story Brother Carter F. "Chip" Schwartz '56 mailed a large box of Phi Sig photographss and memorabilia to our offices and we’ve scanned many items and added them to The Eta Photo Vault for all to see. He also sent along this note: At 86 years of age my memory is not what it used to be, but let’s see what I can tell you. Having enrolled at the University of Maryland in 1952 and becoming a member of Phi Sigma Kappa soon thereafter, I was one of the first to live in #7 Fraternity Row. In fact, because of construction delays in the finishing of the houses on the row, I lived in one of several old army barracks located directly behind the row. Once we got into our new chapter house, I roomed with Frank M. Dreessen ‘56 and later with Robert C. Dalzell ‘56. I know that we had a Cook in the house for some meals and even a House Mother - but can’t seem to recall the room and board fees associated with living in the chapter house. During the summer of ‘54 I worked in Ocean City, New Jersey along with Bob Cooke and Jim Kenkel (Robert C. Cooke ‘56 and James E. Kenkel’55, both deceased). Jim and I worked at The Flanders Hotel. We became friends with many and I invited them to come to Maryland’s Homecoming. Enclosed are several photos for you to place into The Eta Photo Vault. I’m also enclosing a few photos and items from the 1956 Orange Bowl. I went to Florida with Jim Kenkel in his brand new 1955 Chevrolet convertible. We picked up with the Maryland Cheerleaders and put ourselves into the Orange Bowl Parade. We had tickets for the game but chose to stay with the cheerleaders on the field. Get a load of the price on that ticket! I hope that these materials might be helpful and I am sorry that I have never been back to College Park to see the new chapter house during an alumni association function. Thanks for all you do for the Eta Chapter and, yes, I’m Damn Proud to be a Phi Sig. - Chip https://etaalumnivault.smugmug.com/ MORE PHOTOS!
18 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Eta Alumni Association News A Very Generous and Meaningful Gift As part of the fundraising efforts benefitting the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund associated with Giving Day 2020, the President of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa attempted to reach Brother Arthur C. Farnham ‘43. Mrs. Rita Farnham, his wife, answered the phone and shared the very sad news that Brother Farnham had just recently passed away. As is our tradition, the next day your President mailed a letter of condolence on behalf of the Brotherhood to Mrs. Farnham. On June 28, 2020, in the middle of the COVID pandemic, we received a hand-written note. Dear Joseph, A belated thank you for your comforting letter after Arthur’s passing. He was almost 99 years of age, had been in hospice for eighteen months, and his interests were mostly on family—his sixth great grandchild was born last week. Apparently this family included your Eta Alumni Association. He always made sure that I paid his annual dues. After talking with you, I’ve been thinking of reasons for his continued interest in your association. Arthur was an awkward eighteen year old when he left home, for the first time, to begin college at the University of Maryland. At that time the United States of America was involved in World War II and drafting healthy young men into the armed forces. Those in college could join the military, finish college and then accept a deferred commission as a beginning officer. Arthur joined the Navy and upon graduation would become an Ensign and involved in World War II. Fortunately, while at the University of Maryland, Arthus became a member of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa and lived in the fraternity house. During this time of major changes, and facing an uncertain future, he received acceptance and encouragement from his group of brothers. I’m sure that this support was very important in helping him to cope with this stressful time, and why Arthur remembered it for the rest of his life. Thank you again for your support of me at this time and for your continued involvement in the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa. I am enclosing a gift in memory of my husband to encourage other graduates to join their Alumni Association. I’m sure Arthur would be pleased (or maybe he really is pleased). With Fond Memories, Rita C. Farnham Enclosed with the notecard was a carefully detached page 14 of the January 2020 issue of our magazine, The THIRD DEGREE. Page 14 of that issue was the Gift Membership document (just like the page shown to the right). Mrs. Farnham wrote on the form “In Memory of Arthur C. Farnham, Class of 1943”, selected the purchase of a six-pack of gift memberships, and added “Your Choice” as the “Recipient Name.” These six Gift Memberships were presented to the six members of the Executive Committee who volunteered to take office and lead the chapter through difficult times in 2015: Daniel Mackey ‘16 , Nathaniel Rogers ‘16 , Steven Lopez ‘16 , Mitchell W. Parrish ‘16 , Michael Barnette ‘16 , and Zachary J. Portnoff ‘16.

20 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Eta Alumni Association News alumni profile The THIRD DEGREE: What first compelled you to become a member of Phi Sigma Kappa? Norb Garrett: Well, you did, Joe! Truth is, I accepted to Maryland late (was considering a school in the Northeast before finalizing on Maryland) and there was no on-campus housing available. So I was on campus for orientation and met a few guys who I liked and we were having beers at an on -campus bar when you, Joe Criscuoli, approached us about joining Phi Sigma Kappa. We went down to the house on Frat Row, fell in love with the place and the guys, and rented a room for the fall. We all rushed that fall of our freshman year. TTD: What was your most triumphant moment as an undergraduate? Well, obviously graduating from Journalism School was my biggest accomplishment. The J School at Maryland is nationally regarded, which is why I ultimately decided to come to Maryland, and I felt incredibly prepared for life outside of college after going through J School at Maryland. It was a great experience. TTD: What things did you learn as a member of Eta Chapter that have served you well in your life? First and foremost, brotherhood and teamwork. The bonds that were created at Phi Sig are lifelong; I’m still in touch with most, if not all, of the brothers who were in the house during my years there, and I consider them among my closest friends in life. We literally grew up together, had many great moments and several not-so-great moments. But through it all we were brothers. I also appreciated that while we took being a Phi Sig seriously, we didn’t take ourselves too seriously. We kept it fun, which is what life is all about. TTD: What advice would you want to share with our current undergraduate members? Take chances, honor friendships, be respectful, have fun. The years you spend in college are more than formative; they are fundamental to who you are, what you’re about. I’ve always felt—and I pressed this concept into my kids—that you’re defined in life largely by the friends you make. The friendships that you’ll make in college are lifelong, so take the time to nurture those and challenge yourself to make friends outside of your comfort zone. It’ll ultimately make you a better person. TTD: Why did you donate to the "Six Columns" fund? I want to make sure to help others experience what I did and benefit from the experiences I had as a brother at Phi Sigma Kappa. TTD: What's your most favorite memory of life as a member of Eta Chapter? Wow. First and foremost, walking up to the house the day we moved in as freshman and meeting a guy who would become one of my best friends for life (and college roommate for most of my years), Pat McGeough. I remember both of us walking up to the house from the back carrying lacrosse sticks and gear over our shoulders. I noticed his helmet looked like a Summit (NJ) helmet. Turns out he and I played against each other in NJ lacrosse while I was at boarding school up in NJ. We immediately bonded and remain super close friends to this day. I’d also have to say going through the associaton process with my classmates and bonding the way we did through that experience. We had great elder classmen who led us through that process who made the experience special and truly made you feel like you’d accomplished something when formally becoming a brother. Guys like Scrocky Young, Mike Reed, Dave Lamolinara, Jay Ostaffe, Green Mike, Hawk, Knobs, Sparky and Joe Criscuoli all helped make joining Phi Sig a great experience! September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 21 As if the Pandemic Was Not Enough! It is with great regret that we must report that your Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa was not selected as an “Alumni Club of the Year” by the International Headquarters of Phi Sigma Kappa for 2020. In each of the previous 8 years (2012-2019) our association was honored with this award. We share with you a sense of sadness that will not easily pass. The Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa was not selected despite the following… 1. We have, in the midst of a global pandemic, 236 paid members. 2. Our 11-Year Average number of paid members is 290. 3. We raised almost $140,000.00 and created the largest Greek Capital Campaign at the University of Maryland. 4. We raised over $58,000.00 to create an Endowed Scholarship Fund - the largest Greek Scholarship Fund at UMD. 5. In 11 years we have sent $ 15,670.00 in Sustaining Member Dues to the International Headquarters of Phi Sigma Kappa. 6. In each of the past 8 years, the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa was one of a small number of alumni groups to receive this award. 7. This year, only one alumni group received the award. Well, it is what it is, right? We think that we should begin our comeback today. After all that we have already accomplished, we can think of no greater “in your face” gesture than to set a new record for membership and to do so right in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. Let’s send to our International Headquarters a message - with each of our forthcoming $5.00 Sustaining Member Dues donations - that the Eta Alumni Association stands tall. We hope that you’ll take a moment this weekend to act - whether you join, renew, or give a Gift Membership - and to bring us to 400 paid members. Damn Proud, - The (Enraged) Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa ANOTHER New Logo Unveiled Your alumni association has also unveiled ANOTHER special logo for use during the 2022 - 2023 membership year...AND BEYOND. Frankly, this pandemic thing kinda backed-up all our creative juices and, well, here’s evidence of what happens when we have a third of a page that’s blank. Anyway, this logo grabs a readily recognizable line from our Creed and blends in a little UMD identity. This image may not really take off until all the seats on the Grand Council of Phi Sigma Kappa are filled by Eta Alumni. Um, see you at the next General Convention, right?
Eta Alumni Feature Prominently in Fall 2020 Signet Donations The names of several prominent Eta Alumni appeared in the Fall 2020 Signet, as part of the fraternity’s listing of donors, including: Lary L. Acker ‘57 Leon A. Boulavsky Jr ‘75 Oliver Cowley ‘21 Alex Robert Dulla ‘22 Xavier Jennings ‘20 John B. Ostaffe ‘80 John H. Parsons ‘87 Robert G. Pemberton ‘58 Dennis G. Phelan ‘79 Joseph E. Smith Jr ‘66 Robert H. Stropp Jr ‘69 Grady A. Vickers Jr ‘56 Ross Ward ‘21 John M. Willin ‘61 Robert A. Yellowlees ‘60 Leslie David Young ‘62 Damn Proud! Lost Forever We regret the need to bring you more tragic news. Sadly, and suddenly, the decorative mirror that once adorned the bar area at #7 Fraternity Row is no more. During an attempt to move this cherished icon from it’s temporary storage and return it to the care of the undergraduate chapter at #2 Fraternity Row, this reflective masterpiece, this beauteous bar mirror, this Eta antiquity was forever and irreparably damaged. Frankly, what with COVID, monkey pox and the raid on Mar-a-Lago, we simply can’t take much more. We were actually not sure whether to place this item in the “Eta Alumni Association News” section of this magazine or in “Chapter Eternal.” In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Eta Scholarship Fund. 22 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Eta Alumni Association News A screen shot from Phi Sigma Kappa’s version of “Giving Day” shows University of Maryland alumni ranked 24th in funds donated and 10th in number of donors to the (inter)national cause. An undated archival photo shows the reflective, and now splintered, splendor that once gave many an Eta Alumni the opportunity to look deep within, and to see who or what was coming up fast behind them.

24 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Eta Alumni Association News University of Maryland Main Administration Building Named for Thomas V. "Mike" Miller, Jr. Maryland Senate President Emeritus Honored for His Role in Transforming Higher Education in Maryland June 29, 2020 - College Park, MD The University of Maryland today announces its Main Administration Building will be named in honor of Maryland Senator Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, Jr. For more than 30 years, Senator Miller presided as the longest-serving state Senate president in the history of the United States, tirelessly advocating for higher education institutions in Maryland. His legacy will now be cemented on campus through the Thomas V. Miller, Jr. Administration Building. “For all that Maryland Senate President Mike Miller has done, over the course of three decades, for the students, the faculty, and the staff of UMD -- those who are here now; those who came before; and those who will come in the generations ahead -- we proudly, and gratefully, etch his name in stone, upon this landmark Main Administration Building,” said UMD President Wallace D. Loh. “I want to thank everybody who made this possible, especially my wife of 55 years who I met here on the College Park campus. We’ve been together ever since. This is our home away from home and I am very grateful for this honor,” said Senator Miller. Senator Miller was instrumental in the passing of legislation that reorganized higher education in Maryland in 1988, designating College Park the state’s flagship institution and prioritizing state funding for higher education to help the university become a preeminent national public university. This was a significant turning point for higher education in Maryland, raising the reputation of the College Park flagship and the entire public university system. “Every year, tens of thousands of Terps will cross McKeldin Mall, inspired by Senator Miller's unwavering commitment to propelling our university forward. His name will remind us all of his unwavering pursuit of service to the great state of Maryland and to the world,” said UMD President-Designate Darryll J. Pines. Senator Miller’s passion and advocacy for UMD has also helped to transform the physical campus, helping to combine investment from the state with private support to provide world-class facilities for our students, faculty and staff. He provided state support for dozens of university projects, including the Bioscience Research Building, XFINITY Center, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, the Physical Sciences Complex and Cole Field House. “For the first five years that I held office as Maryland’s Governor, I had the privilege of serving alongside Senate President Emeritus Mike Miller. After an historic tenure as the longest continually serving presiding officer in the nation, Mike Miller continues to be a strong, unifying leader for the legislature and for the state of Maryland. And as a proud Terp, his passionate advocacy has had a profound impact on the entire University System of Maryland. The dedication of the Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Administration Building is a fitting tribute to a lifetime of selfless service,” said Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. Senator Miller’s belief in the capacity of public universities to serve our state was made more evident by his unwavering advocacy for the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: Mpowering the State. Through this partnership, UMD and the University of Maryland, Baltimore now have a $1 billion joint research enterprise, 25 joint programs and centers and 600 joint research proposals - all to deliver on a vision of collaboration, innovation, and transformative impact across the state. In 1970, Senator Miller was elected to represent Prince George’s County in the Maryland House of Delegates, and in 1974, he was elected to the Maryland State Senate. His current district includes portions of Calvert, Prince George’s and Charles counties. He has been re-elected to the State Senate every four years since 1978. Senator Miller was first selected by his peers as President of the Maryland Senate at the beginning of the 1987 Session of the Maryland General Assembly, and was the longest serving Senate President in both Maryland and United States history until he stepped down from the role in 2020. From 1983 to 1986, he served as Chairman of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Senator Miller is the 1999 recipient of the Tyser Medallion Award for Outstanding Service to the University of Maryland. He was honored in 1997 as the nation’s outstanding legislator. He has served as the President of the National Senate Presidents’ Forum and as Chairman of the Southern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Governments. Miller is a former Chairman of the National Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee. Other honors and awards include Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland Hall of Fame, the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame and the William P. Coliton Community Service Award for Excellence from Johns Hopkins University. Senator Miller is a native of Clinton, Md. He is a graduate of Surrattsville High School, the University of Maryland (B.S. 1964) and the University of Maryland School of Law (LL.B., J.D. 1967). Admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1967, Miller is a member of local, state and national bar associations. The University System of Maryland Board of Regents approved the naming in May 2020. A Tree is Planted in College Park Looking Back at the Phi Sigma Kappa Centennial (1997) About Phi Sigma Kappa (ETA) and its Centennial Anniversary A willow oak is dedicated to the Centennial Anniversary of the Phi Sigma Kappa (PSK) ETA Chapter at the University of Maryland. The chapter was founded on January 8, 1897,1 and is currently the oldest at UMD. PSK ETA outlines is cardinal principles as promoting brotherhood, stimulating scholarship, and developing character, and adheres to a policy of “no pledging and no hazing.” PSK ETA currently occupies a house on Fraternity Row built in 1958. About the Willow Oak The tree dedicated to the Centennial Anniversary is located on the southeastern edge of McKeldin Mall, near Regents Drive. Like the other trees lining the Mall, it is a willow oak (Quercus phellos), a medium-large deciduous tree known for its grand oak shape, willowy leaves, fast growth rate and tolerance to urban settings. The willow oak is native to the southeastern United States and is usually found in moist soils. It typically grows to be 40-75 feet tall, but can get up to 100 feet. This specific willow oak planted for the Centennial is 25.0 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 12.0 inches. The tree has an oval to round-shaped crown of leaves, which currently has a radius of 8.4 feet. Mature willow oak trees have a dark gray, irregularly-furrowed trunk. The tree has narrow, green leaves with bristle tips and smooth edges, and they turn a dull yellow in the fall. It also has small yellow-green flowers in separate male and female catkins (those fuzzy-looking bodies hanging from trees). The fruits are acorns, which are important sources of food for the critters found on the Mall (namely squirrels and songbirds). Alumni Notes Rock & Roll Will Never Die Brother Glenn Jaggard ‘86 writes: “over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2021 a bunch of us went to see a band that the late 80's and early 90's grads all loved and followed back in our days at Maryland: Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers from Philadelphia. We were married at the University Chapel. I think all but one of the wedding party are still with us. My child bride was a Sigma Kappa. We had big plans for a 60th celebration, but Covid messed things up. We are thinking about something big if things settle down in 2022. We are bringing one of our granddaughters down for a campus visit on Maryland Day. Hope to see some fellow alumni then. September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 27 Photo Courtesy of Glenn Jaggard ‘86

30 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Long-Distance Photography Brother John J. B. Wright, Esq. ‘82 and Janie, his wife, are in the midst of a multi-year effort to visit each of the Big Ten schools by attending one “Away” football game each season. For 2021, their destination was the University of Illinois. On September 18th, 2021, Wright placed a call to our very own Editor-in-Chief and asked if he would visit a certain website that featured an aerial webcam focused on an iconic campus sculpture. Our Editor-in -Chief knows how to capture a screen image and so we can share this image. The Alma Mater, a bronze statue by sculptor Lorado Taft, is a beloved symbol of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The 10,000-pound statue depicts a mother-figure wearing academic robes and flanked by two attendant figures representing "Learning" and "Labor", after the University's motto "Learning and Labor." Sited at the corner of Green and Wright Streets at the heart of the campus, the statue is an iconic figure for the university and a popular backdrop for student graduation photos. Thanks for this selfie, John, and for your generous gift. Oh, BTW, “Snips” is just fine. And our Scholarship Fund is now an Endowed Fund and the largest in the UMD Greek System. No pain, no gain. 34 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Yes, Brothers, times has sure have changed! You, the active members of the Eta Chapter. are smarter and more sophisticated and live in a newer and a better-appointed house, but we were better looking and had more fun! In the fifties, we got our first house, # 7 Fraternity Row, and we were in close contact with sororities, with the KATs (Kappa Alpha Theta) right next door. The KATs were, in today’s world, sexually abused as we ogled them and threw water balloons as they sunbathed on the porch roof. One night a drunken brother was disrobed to nudity, wrapped in a rug and deposited in the front hall of the KAT house. He was missing for a week. In those days, politics on campus was abloom. Two of the brothers ran the more “liberal” approach in trying to make “everything” allowed on campus. A bit different from the definition of “liberal” today. There was a constant battle between fraternities and the university. The Tumbling Tees were well known in politics on campus. We had alcohol at most of our house parties and dared the university to catch us. I remember one of our “Purple Jesus” parties, when we turned the staircase from the lobby to the basement into a slide and placed mattresses on the floor. Our house mother, Mrs. Barnes, a kind woman of plus 60 years of age, called our party “rotten to the core”. As we were required to hire a house mother by the beginning of the fall semester, our next house mother was a carefully chosen woman a few ears older, plus 65 I think. She owned a bar in Olney, Maryland and had been arrested for selling liquor out the back door. Our “safe house” for the storage of liquor was a tiny room on the third floor, equipped with a padlock, but the “occupant brother” was seemingly never present when university officials came around. Surprisingly, we never got caught. One summer night, I had pre-arranged plans for a “special” evening with a lady friend and my brothers hid in my closet and set up the room for disaster, complete with a bucket of water suspended above the door into the room and a collapsible bed. We got away before anything happened. We had a fully operating kitchen, with three meals a day and three meals a day. Etalka Lomax Johnson was our beloved cook and what a cook she was. Her cheese biscuits melted in your mouth. Dinner, for all of us, was always a fun event with mashed potatoes flying (sometimes) and Frank Thompson passing around his pet garden snake. One frozen night, someone opened his window and killed poor Frank’s snake. You have it all over us in appointments to the house. We had no alumni to provide for our welfare and to construct a “playroom” out of the living room. Our living room was a formal room used only when parents or a sorority came to visit. We congregated in the dining room. When ETA moved in to the new house, everything was new. Thank your lucky stars for an alumni group that has insured you have a great home and will continue to do so in the future. Don’t take us for granted! The best to all our actives in 2022. Bob “Pimp” Pemberton ETA - Class of 1958 An Address to Our Active Members Tales from the 1950’s NOTICE: Members of the active chapter are STRONGLY cautioned against any attempt to replicate the environment, situations, activities and/or thought-processes associated with life as a member of the Eta Chapter in the 1950’s (and/or at any other time in the past, for that matter). Laugh at the antics? Sure. Appreciate your hard-working, dedicated and generous alumni? By all means. Attempt to bring history to current life? Not on your life. Sincerely (and warmly), The Chapter Advisor, members of the Eta Advisory Board and the Officers of the Eta Housing Corporation of Phi Sigma Kappa, Inc.

36 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE I am happy to put pen to paper, or should I say wife to computer, to share what I have been doing during Covid-19. In April of 2020, as the restaurants and hotels and art galleries in my town of Laguna Beach, California were shutting down, putting so many out of work, I felt the need to do something to help. Laguna Beach, where I have lived for 45 years since moving to California, is an art colony and tourist town of about 25,000 residents. Because of its artists and beautiful beaches and lovely weather, it is a popular vacation destination for many. We have about 100 restaurants, and 3 to 4 thousand hotel rooms and so many art galleries and exhibitions that are too many to count. I contacted three friends and began raising funds for what was to be named The Laguna Covid 19 Relief Fund. The criteria to receive a grant of $500 to $1000 was that you had to live and/or work in Laguna Beach and have experienced financial hardship because of the Covid shutdown. We raised $525,000 and received over 1,200 applications and gave $500 to $1000 to 915 individuals, shutting down our relief fund in July of 2020. In December of that same year, the restaurants were again shutting down because of the resurgence of Covid 19 and we were asked if we would start the relief fund again. With a $300,000 grant from the city plus another $175,000 we were fortunate enough to raise with the generosity of so many, we were able to give grants to another 1,000 workers. Most of the recipients were restaurant and hotel workers but we also gave grants to over 70 artists and salon workers and others who had lost their livelihoods due to this terrible pandemic. In the end we raised $995,000 and were able to help 1,900 workers. This was probably the hardest I’d worked since I was a bellhop at the first Marriott Hotel next to the National Airport while I was in college along with a number of other Phi Sigs from 1962 to 1965. During the duration of our relief fund, my wife and I made over 5,000 phone calls to recipients and employers. I know that being a brother of Phi Sigma Kappa during my 6 years at The University of Maryland has made a difference in my life and has helped me to be in a position to help others in need. Respectfully, Robert Mister ‘66 (aka Two Beer Bob) A Guide to Giving Back COVID-19 My Story...
September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 37 C OVID-19 sweep across my area in northern Florida in late February, making life difficult for this single 86-year-old, living alone. All my restaurants begun to close, which left me to eat my own food or frozen dinners. The latter was easier and a little better. Early trips to Publix, for seniors only, kept us safer, however it began to wear. After nearly two years of research on local independent living facilities, I made the move to Grand Living, a new modern four-story facility with every thing one needs, in Jacksonville. The facility has all the "bells and whistles" and a great staff. Everyone wore masks and we ate in our rooms until around later March, when two of our three dining areas opened. We could not get enough dining help to open the third area. At our first state health testing, I tested POSITIVE, with no symptoms, and three days later, it was NEGATIVE. We were all double vaccinated by late April and are now 100 percent. Visitors are required to have vaccinations, if invited to dine. Jacksonville, being the heart of Duval County, was hit hard. Life with a mask, in Florida, is slowly disappearing. Governor DeSantis has done a great job in balancing the health and economic side. Of course, we still suffer from employment needs but it is improving. Life in a senior facility does have it's drawbacks, but honestly, so does getting old. Hang onto youth, because all of us will eventually go through this. Growing old is "hell". By the way, I made it through my 87 birthday! 38 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Dear Alumni of the Eta Chapter, Parents & Friends, Well, we really blew them away this time. On Wednesday March 9th, otherwise known asGiving Day 2022, we had 156 Donors and we raised $67,445.00 - including a Challenge Match gift of $25,000.00 from Brother Allen J. Krowe ‘54. The total number of donors in the entire UMD Greek System was 243. The total number of donors to the Phi Sigma Kappa Endowed Scholarship Fund was 156. Our 156 Donors represented 64% of the total donors in the UMD Greek System. The total of all donations to all the funds in the UMD Greek System was $56,709.06. The total of all donations to the Phi Sigma Kappa Endowed Scholarship Fund was $42,445.00. Our $42,445.00 represented 74.8% of all donations to the UMD Greek System. (ref. https://givingday.umd.edu/leaderboards) 46% of our Donors were first-time Donors. 33% of our donations were from first-time Donors. With total donations at $42,445.00, we more than reached our Challenge Match valued at $25,000.00. Adding the Challenge Match money to our total, we added $67,445.00 to our Scholarship Fund in one single day. On March 8th, the day before Giving Day, we had $58,185.09 in the Phi Sigma Kappa Endowed Scholarship Fund. By adding $67,445.00 to our Scholarship Fund on March 9th, we more than doubled the value of our Scholarship Fund in one single day. If our Phi Sigma Kappa Endowed Scholarship Fund were listed on the Leaderboard as a separate element, we would have been #20 on the campuswide list (if our fund were not included in their subtotal, "Fraternities and Sororities" would have moved below us). Our single fraternity Scholarship Fund beat out: 21. School of Public Policy $34,971.00 148 Donors 22. Keep Me Maryland Fund $21,633.00 98 Donors 23. The Graduate School $16,870.00 45 Donors 24. College of Information Studies $14,441.00 90 Donors 25. Student Groups $14,142.31 161 Donors With the Challenge Match funds included in our total, we would have been #19 on the campus-wide list and have beaten out the Maryland Alumni Association. We also had two donations to "Six Columns: The Capital Campaign Benefitting the Eta Chapter of Pi Sigma Kappa" totaling $150.00. You may recall that, a few years back, we raised over $138,000.00 for this fund, designed for the buy-in and outfitting costs associated with a chapter house on Fraternity Row. In conclusion, because of generous donors like you, we have brought our total Scholarship fund value to $125,630.09 in a total of just six "Giving Day" events. 42 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Eta Alumni Association News alumni profile The THIRD DEGREE: What was your most triumphant moment as an undergraduate? Allen J. Krowe: Donning a Cap and Gown on graduation Day, which I removed after that ceremony to reveal a United States Air Force 2nd Lieutenant uniform - and within three months I was off to Flight School and three years as a Fighter Pilot. TTD: What first compelled you to become a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, and why did you issue the $25,000 Giving Day Matching Challenge benefitting the Phi Sigma Kappa Endowed Scholarship Fund? Allen J. Krowe: I would first recognize the outreach from the current Phi Sig Alumni Leadership alerting me to the fundraising opportunity. As a somewhat lonely freshman in 1950, working six days a week from 6 pm to 6 am in an all night diner, making friends on the UMD campus was not happening. The Eta Chapter made it happen. Challenge Matches are a great way to put life in a Fundraising campaign. I have given back to UMD over the years. I chaired the first public fundraising campaign for the University in 1993 raising $260 million. I also established the annual Krowe Excellence in Teaching Awards at the Smith School in 1986 which continues today. TTD: What advice would you want to share with our current undergraduate members? Allen J. Krowe: Success in life is up to you, those you associate with can help or hinder. In retrospect you’ll find the choice was yours. TTD: What's your most favorite memory of life as a member of Eta Chapter? Allen J. Krowe: My favorite was pinning a Phi Sig emblem on my soon to be wife in 1951. More About Allen: Allen J. Krowe was born June 17, 1932 in Deltaville Virginia, and the son of a Chesapeake Bay waterman. Allen graduated from Middlesex High School in Saluda, Virginia in 1950 and he graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Economics in 1954 and received an Honorary Doctorate in Business Management. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force and served as a fighter pilot. He joined Touche Ross in 1958 (then known as Touche, Niven, Baily & Smart) and worked there until 1960 when he joined IBM in the Federal Systems Division working with the federal government on major space programs such as Vanguard and Project Mercury, Project Gemini and Project Apollo. In 1963, he moved to IBM Corporate Headquarters in New York to hold positions of increasing responsibility and was named Vice President in 1975. Allen became the Chief Financial Officer in 1982 and was elected a Senior Vice President and Director in 1986. In this position, he was responsible for worldwide development and U.S. manufacturing for IBM's Information Systems and Communications Group, Information Systems and Products Group, Real Estate and Construction Division and the Rolm Corp. subsidiary. After becoming an IBM Executive Vice President in 1988 he was recruited by Texaco to become Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, assuming the responsibility for the finance, tax, comptroller, risk management and corporate planning functions at corporate headquarters. In 1993 he was elected director and named vice chairman of Texaco. In March of 2017, the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund was unveiled, designed to assist undergraduate members of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland. The fund was created by the Eta Alumni Association and the Eta Housing Corporation, in accord with the University of Maryland College Park Foundation - just like the "Six Columns Fund" - to which some of our members have already been most generous. And, like the "Six Columns Fund" the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund is monitored by the Eta Alumni Association and the Eta Housing Corporation. The Division of Student Affairs Development Staff at the University of Maryland collects and evaluates essays, written by the undergraduate members of Phi Sigma Kappa who seek to earn scholarship money from this fund. The Eta Alumni Association and the Eta Housing Corporation determines the annual/semester "theme" for the essays, and reviews and approves the evaluation of the essays done by the Division of Student Affairs Development Staff at the University of Maryland. As a result of our first 6 Giving Day appeals, we have raised over $126,000 and reached “endowment” status - enabling distribution of scholarships to Eta Chapter undergrads in perpetuity without any reduction in the “endowed” amount. On our 7th Giving Day (March 8, 2023) we hope that each of our members will make a taxdeductible* contribution and help us to reach our NEW goal of $200K. Why not join with Brothers from many different decades, all of whom want to aid in the efforts to create scholarship opportunities for the members of the Eta Chapter by contributing to The Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund, and to support improvements to the Chapter House through the Six Columns Fund. September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 45 Additional Ways to Support Your Scholarship Fund! Give Later Through Your Will or Living Trust You can support our scholarship fund by including a gift in your will or living trust as beneficiary for a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate or a noncash asset, such as real estate or artwork. Equally important, wills and living trusts allow you to retain control of your finances should you ever wish or need to make a change due to life circumstances. By notifying us of your bequest now, we can provide assistance to ensure that the University is able to carry out your specific intentions after your lifetime. Below is suggested wording to share with your legal counsel: I give to the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, a charitable organization [Tax ID: 52-2197313] located at 4603 Calvert Road, College Park, MD 20740 [insert $ amount, percentage of residuary estate, or otherwise name gifted assets] for the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund for its general educational purposes. Give Now and Receive Income for Life A gift annuity is a simple, popular charitable life-income arrangement by which you can support our scholarship fund and receive fixed-income payments for life. Your annuity payment depends on your age(s) and the gift amount to establish the annuity. Our minimum age is 60, and it can be funded with cash or appreciated securities. A portion of the annuity payment is tax-free, and you can claim a charitable tax deduction in the year you make your gift. And, if you don't need income right away or are younger than 60, you can defer your payments by one or more years and receive larger payments and a larger tax deduction. How It Works 1. Transfer cash or other property to the University of Maryland, with designation for the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund 2. The University of Maryland agrees to make payments for the life of one and up to two annuitants (payments are backed by our entire assets) 3. The balance of the transfer inures to the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund upon the passing of the annuitants Benefits Payments for life that are favorably taxed 1. When gift is funded with cash, part of payment will be tax-free 2. When gift is funded with appreciated property, part will be taxed as capital gain, part will be tax-free, and part will be taxed as ordinary income Federal income-tax deduction for a portion of your gift Your gift will provide generous support for the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund Next Steps Read a detailed description of this gift: https://umd.giftplans.org/index.php?cID=91 Contact us to learn more about this gift plan or other options: https://umd.giftplans.org/index.php?cID=126 Receive a personal calculation of this gift: https://umd.giftplans.org/index.php?cID=138 Request an eBrochure with more information: https://umd.giftplans.org/index.php?cID=148&broch4=checked For additional information, please contact: Ed Kenny at UMD: 301.405.0322 or edkenny@umd.edu STEP 2 The University of Maryland College Park Foundation makes fixed payments to you and/or another beneficiary starting now STEP 3 Remainder to the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund Donor STEP 1 You give the University of Maryland College Park Foundation a gift of cash or property (and receive an income-tax deduction)
