The THIRD DEGREE - Issue 16

The Journal of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa

September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 49 A Special Invitation from Christopher M. Flood, ’13 First Vice President Eta Alumni Association There certainly was a surprise for the elected officers of the Eta Colony and Chapter during the re-chartering event held on March 12, 2011. Several months earlier, the Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa had adopted a legacy "Eta Alumni Pins Program." The program, developed and proposed by Robert G. "Bob" Pemberton, Class of 1958, and expertly administrated by then-First Vice President Wayne H. Bethards, Class of 1959, called for jeweled Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity pins, donated by alumni of the Eta Chapter, be outfitted with jeweled “Eta” guards and presidential dangles, and be used to establish an award or awards for those Active Members in recognition of their outstanding performance as an officer of the chapter. Brother Pemberton promoted the program via outreach by phone and committed to donations of a minimum of 17 pins to launch the program. Our hope was that the program would be sustainable over time so that it could become a traditional recognition element and an important part of the installation of officers ritual. At the re-chartering event, each newly-minted Eta Brother who had held elected office during the time when Eta was a colony was presented with a jeweled pin and guard as well as the dangle appropriate to his office. Where possible, the presentations were made by the donors themselves. In other cases, prominent Eta Alumni stood in as presenters for their absent Brothers. It was a very special and moving part of the re-chartering event. Since that time, the Eta Alumni Association has presented each newly-elected chapter president with a donated jeweled pin and guard, along with the presidential (gavel) dangle. Where the donor did not have a jeweled guard and/or presidential dangle, the association purchased these in order to read the pin for presentation So, over the years, we have continued to present pins and our inventory is now just two pins, so we are in need of additional jeweled pins for future presentations. Perhaps you have a jeweled pin that you would like to donate to this program? The program also calls for the pins that are to be awarded be accompanied by a short biographical sketch of the donor. If you would like to donate your Phi Sigma Kappa pin, our current inventory could really use your help. Please complete the donation form that follows this page and mail it with your jeweled pin to our Alumni Association. Donated pins will be inventoried, jeweled guards and presidential dangles will be purchased by the alumni association and the pins will be securely stored by the Eta Alumni Association until the time of their presentation. We look forward to your support of this special program! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 443-553-5865 or drop me an e -mail at [email protected] An Urgent Update on the ETA ALUMNI PINS PROGRAM A Unique and Lasting Way to Share the Symbol of Our Fraternal Bonds Robert G. April 20, 1921 - January 4, 2020 (age 98) Arthur C. Farnham (Art) was born April 20, 1921 in Washington D.C. to Ruth H. and Arthur B. Farnham. He grew up in the Wesley Heights section of Washington, D.C. with his two younger brothers, Henry (d. 1941), and Lowry (d. 2013) and spent summers in New Hampshire with his beloved aunts Jane (d. 1930) and Daisy (Margaret Joy Farnham, d. 1977), for whom he served as guardian prior to her passing. Art graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and the University of Maryland, College Park (1943), where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and served as secretary of the Rossborough Club. Art described PSK as comprised of scholarly type members. He enjoyed living in the fraternity house and was close friends with Ed Pierce, who facilitated his meeting wife Barbara Kimball, who was a teacher. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1946, stationed in Adak, Alaska. Art’s career as an engineer took him all over the Northeast and Upper Midwest. When Rita retired they moved to Arizona, living in Sedona for 19 years before moving to Scottsdale to be closer to family. In his retirement, Art enjoyed exploring the beauty of the Western U.S., reading, spending time with his family, watching television, and following politics and current events. Reflecting on his life, he was grateful to have had loving marriages and was happy that his children all had good marriages and happy lives. He passed away January 4, 2020, a few months shy of his 99th birthday, after 18 months on hospice, 17 of which were spent in the Royal Care Home in Scottsdale, where he received excellent care. September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 55 THE FUNERAL RITUAL of phi sigma kappa Inasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God in His infinite wisdom to call our brother into everlasting life, we have come to perform a privileged duty which the dearest bonds of brotherhood enjoin, that of voicing our undying affection and appreciation of his character, loyalty and friendship. It is fitting that at this solemn time we should, as a fraternity, unbroken in the eternity of God, reffirm the Creed which we hold in common: (Repeat the Creed in unison.) In the firm conviction that my Fraternity demands of me a life of Faith and Purpose: I hereby solemnly declare MY FAITH in the wisdom and love of God; in the dignity and worth of my fellowmen; in the strength and beauty of true fraternity; in the history and future of my country; and in the traditions and program of my Alma Mater. Henceforward, therefore, it shall be MY PURPOSE to remain forever true to this, my Fraternity's faith in me and in turn, to preserve and promote courageously and unselfishly the chosen ideals of our mutual affection and common endeavor. To this end I dedicate MY LIFE to the maintenance of this Faith and the pursuit of this Purpose so that the ideals of Phi Sigma Kappa, being embodied in me, may be fulfilled in my character and conduct, and be known and honored by all men. By these things I stand. Let Us Pray Almighty and Merciful God, Our Heavenly Father, Who has taken unto Thyself the soul of our Brother, teach us to do well the tasks of life so that we may meet with Thy divine approval as workmen of whom Thou needest not to be ashamed. May the bonds of Brotherhood between us be unbroken and may our dependence upon Thy unfailing Fatherhood be strengthened. God of Light, God of Love, God of Life and Death, we commit to Thee our Brother; may he be approved of Thee and may we meet again in Brotherhood. Until day break, and these shadows flee away, we entrust ourselves to Thee. Oh, God, rest his soul and keep us steadfast. Amen. . James H. September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 59 July 20, 1941 - December 13, 2020 Russell Taylor Aaronson, Jr., 79, passed away peacefully in Richmond on Sunday, December 13, 2020. We would like to thank the many friends and family who have reached out with their condolences, offers of assistance, stories, and memories. Dad was born on July 20, 1941 at Union Memorial Hospital on 33rd Street in Baltimore, Maryland, just down the road from Memorial Stadium, home to his Colts and Orioles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell T., Sr., and Dickey Jamison Aaronson. He is survived by his three children Russell T. Aaronson, III (Vaughan), Jennifer Aaronson Hardie (Scott) and Stephanie June Aaronson; his grandchildren Emily, Anna, Will, Kate, Taylor and Samuel; our mother Joan Farr Aaronson; his second wife Betty Aaronson; his sister Ann Aaronson Bender; and many beloved nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Dad grew up collecting stamps, maps, and snakes in Aberdeen, Maryland, where his father spent his career as a civilian employee at the Aberdeen Proving Ground and his mother taught third grade at Aberdeen Elementary School (including Cal and Billy Ripken among her students). Dad attended The Boys Latin School in Baltimore and the University of Maryland in College Park, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, played on the varsity golf team, and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Following his early career as an investment broker, including several years in Richmond with Blyth, Eastman Dillon & Co., he soon embraced his entrepreneurial spirit and spent the bulk of his professional career as a real estate developer, primarily in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, with numerous side projects in such places as Brussels, Belgium, Deer Valley, Utah, St. Thomas, USVI, Denver, Colorado, Dallas, Texas and Allentown, Pennsylvania. Truly, he was driven by his lifelong pursuit of the next big deal. Dad was engaging and adventurous. When he wasn't working a deal, filing a rezoning or contending with bankers, Dad loved to attend our, and more recently his grandchildren's, sporting events, recitals and theatrical performances. He pursued many, many hobbies and diversions, including without limitation, golf, travel, running, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, skiing, hunting, birdwatching, attending theater, collecting art, singing at church, listening to Tchaikovsky, relaxing on the beach in Bethany, Rehoboth and Perdido Key, and tending to his impressive collection of duck decoys. Dad's greatest passion, however, was his love of sailing with his family on the Chesapeake Bay. We spent many wonderful days on the Bay, in and around Annapolis, Oxford and Tilghman Island aboard Mirrors, Wings and Susquehanna, listening to Willie Nelson's Stardust and looking forward to post-sail cocktails at Marmaduke's or crabcakes at the AYC. He loved his Sperry Topsiders, Chapman's Piloting, the paintings of John M. Barber, and nautical charts of the Chesapeake Bay, all of which you could often find him perusing in earnest at Fawcett Boat Supplies. Dad's infectious enthusiasm, even in tough times, was inspiring to all that knew and loved him, and great fun for all those who were along for the ride. After a private service next spring, we will return him to his beloved Chesapeake Bay. Fair winds and following seas, Dad. We love you and miss you. We would like to thank the nursing staff at Westminster Canterbury Richmond for the patient and compassionate care they provided Dad in his final years. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association, the Westminster Canterbury Foundation, Classical WETA, of which Dad was a loyal listener and member, or any charity or cause about which you may be passionate. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout 1959) and subsequent volunteer for many years (he was proud that his son and grandson also attained the rank of Eagle Scout). Jim served in the National Guard and United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. Jim opened his own employment recruiting business in Watchung, NJ in 1977 “Arthur James & Assoc.” which he successfully ran for over 30 years until his retirement in 2007. Many of his best friends resulted from partnerships he formed in business. He loved to play golf and spent much of his time with friends and family playing at his favorite courses in NJ & VT. He hosted “The Vermont Almost Open” for over 25 years with a group of close friends playing courses near his family summer home. He was an avid sports fan following his Maryland “Terps”, Chicago White Sox & Philadelphia Eagles (finally enjoying a Super Bowl victory in 2018) and often watching games with his brother and lifelong friend, Bob (who sadly passed last year). He enjoyed lasting friendships with many of his fraternity brothers from Phi Sigma Kappa (Univ. of Maryland). Most recently, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved yellow lab Ella. Jim was loved and will be missed by all whom he knew through his business, summers spent “at the lake” in Newbury, VT (visiting with his friends at the local general store each morning), winters on Lido Key at the Gulf Beach Resort in Sarasota, FL (where he was known as the “Mayor”), a large family, and being a devoted husband & father. Jim (“Dad”, “Pop Pop”) was always there to help anyone in need and always put others before himself. Jim is survived by his loving wife Pamela of 54 years, son Colin & wife Keri of Colchester, VT (grandchildren James and Sophia), daughter Laura Linabury & husband Dave of Townsend, MA (grandchildren Madison, Mackenzie, Mitchell, Brody, Dale and Ryan), sister Loretta of Easton, PA, sister Marie & husband Ed of Sandpoint, ID, sister-in-law Nancy of Berkeley Heights, NJ, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial donations to the Halls Lake Association, c/o Betty Ann Roy, 713 Halls Lake Rd, Newbury, VT 05051 in lieu of flowers are appreciated. George Anderson Braley Eta Class of 1970 October 5, 1948 - March 28, 2021 George Anderson Braley, 72, died on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Fairfax Hospital from congestive heart failure. He was born in Riverdale, MD, the second of two sons of Jeannette Anderson Braley and Berton James Braley. George is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years Margaret “Margy” Gallagher Braley; three children, Allison Braley-Patton (Bryant), Megan Braley (Matt Mahon), Colin Braley (Emily); his brother, Berton James Braley, Jr. (Linda); and four grandchildren, Nora and Clifton Patton, Craig Mahon and Jesse Braley. In addition, he is survived by numerous Gallagher in-laws who were like siblings, and beloved nieces and nephews. George Braley was a Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Public Policy for Feeding America and previously retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as deputy administrator for special nutrition programs, where he spent 30+ years developing policy for hunger issues. His work fulfilled his sense of purpose and fed the hungry. He attended the University of Maryland on a track scholarship, after excelling at high jump and triple jump in high school and beyond. George will be remembered for his quick wit, love of adventure, and deep devotion to his family. He could be found watching U of Maryland sports (Go Terps!), traveling to destinations near and far, skiing with his brothers-in-law, at Braley reunions in Iowa, or driving with the wind in his hair as an old favorite song played. Everyone who knew him could tell a funny story about him; he lit up every room and made an impression on everyone he met. A memorial service will be held on April 10, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Money and King in Vienna, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Feeding America in memory of George Braley.

62 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE Jeffrey Steven Rueff Eta Class of 1979 August 12, 1957 – September 2, 2021 Jeffrey Steven Rueff passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 2 with devoted wife Joanne and his cherished sons Jack and Connor by his side. Born on August 12, 1957 in New York, New York, Jeff attended Livingston High School, University of West Virginia, and University of Maryland. He was a competitive athlete who played soccer in high school and college, and he continued to be a big sports fan throughout his life. After college he spend a short time working in the food industry where he learned about good food, good wine, good scotch, and good chocolate, before he began his career in the scrap metal industry. Jeff’s greatest love was his family. Before kids, Jeff delighted in having a home-cooked gourmet meal on the table when Joanne got home every day, which they would enjoy together before he turned in early to be ready for an early tee time the next morning. Once his sons were born, he threw himself into fatherhood whole-heartedly. He was the ultimate hockey dad, always ready to pitch in as needed in the penalty box, doing the scoresheet, or playing Jack’s hand-picked playlist over the sound system between whistles. He looked forward to annual family vacations at Lake George where he enjoyed swimming, fishing, and water-skiing with his boys. Despite his busy schedule, Jeff found the time to earn his pilot’s license so he could indulge his love of travel. Friends and family will especially miss Jeff’s great sense of humor. He was a connoisseur of Dad Jokes, and you would often find him laughing hours after a particularly clever (or corny) joke. In fact, it was his humor that first won Joanne’s heart when on their first date he pulled the ever popular “look over there” while stealing a lobster tail from her plate. Joanne, Jack and Connor are grateful for the support they have received during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the Rueffs ask that donations in his memory be sent to Memorial Sloan Kettering, where Jeff received excellent and compassionate care during his battle with lymphoma. Donald French Swan Eta Class of 1970 June 28, 1947 – January 17, 2022 On January 17, 2022, Donald French Swan, of Ellicott City, Maryland passed away after a 21 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 74 years old. Don was born on June 28, 1947 to Donald A. Swan and Dorothy F. Swan in Somers Point, New Jersey. He grew up on the beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey where his passion for sports emerged with surfing. That passion grew into love for other sports as well such as basketball, golf and racquetball. In high school, Don found his heart in basketball and football. He was a member of the 1963-64 Ocean City High School basketball team which was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1991. After high school, Don went on to earn a spot on the University of Maryland’s football team where he played defensive linebacker while earning his Bachelors in Business degree. After college, Don’s next adventure landed him at Xerox Corporation where he worked for 39 years. He became decorated with many sales awards over his career and earned at least 26 President’s Clubs that took him to many wonderful places around the world. Besides work, Don enjoyed volunteering for HCYP, coaching his childrens’ sports teams, and attending their sporting events in high school and college. It didn’t matter the location or distance of these events as he always made it a point to be there. Don’s greatest joy, though, was spending time with his family and friends. He loved to go on vacation to the beach whether it was back in New Jersey, Florida, the Virgin Islands or Hawaii; he was always drawn to the water. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Anita Marino; devoted father of Donald (Kelly) Swan, Erika (Mark) Lupo and Kristina (Sean) Cunningham; loving nephew of Helen Foor; dear brother of Donna DeRocher; dear uncle to niece Chantal Tilbrook; beloved uncle of nephews Donald DeRocher and David DeRocher; he leaves behind four grandchildren: Donald & Marina Swan and Caden & Tristan Lupo. Don was preceded in death by his parents Donald A. Swan (2005) and Dorothy F. Swan (2016). Memorial donations may be made to: The Michael J. Fox Foundation or American Parkinson Disease Association.

Christopher R. Reed Eta Class of 1989 March 24, 1967 – February 7, 2022 By Beverly Loss Reed February 9, 2022 This week I lost my best friend. Chris passed peacefully on Monday morning after courageously battling pancreatic cancer for nearly 7 months. He was not in any pain and was here at home, just as he wanted to be. I know this news will come as a surprise to many, but as he wished, his cancer diagnosis was not widely shared. We were devastated after receiving the news last July; we had so many dreams and plans for the future. But, in typical Chris fashion, he met the challenge head on, managing to tolerate the very aggressive chemo treatments rather well (even keeping his hair!) It gave us hope that he might be with us just a little longer than the average and give us more time to adjust to what our world would be like without him. He was our superman. Things began to change in mid-December, when one thing after another happened and his health began to decline. It all seemed to happen so quickly and before we were ready. I had the privilege of having him in my life for almost 34 years and I see him in the kids - Hunter’s sly smile and easy going way, Maddie’s kindness and thick wavy hair. We will miss him terribly each and every day, but we know he will be watching over us. We will be okay. Rest in peace our precious angel, we love you so much. June 18, 1936 – June 24, 2021 Gary Albert of Potomac, MD passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at the age of 53. Beloved husband of 27 years to Maddie Albert; devoted and proud father of Adam and Riley Albert. He was survived by his parents Joel and Charlotte Albert, the extended Albert family, including his many nephews, nieces and great nephews and niece. He will be deeply missed by the loving group of childhood friends that he remained close with throughout his lifetime. Gary's many successes include his businesses Pearly White Pets and ActivTrax among others which includes phenomenal longtime employees. Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, 2021 at Congregation B'nai Tzedek and interment followed at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Brain Tumor Society. Gary S. Albert Eta Class of 1991 September 2022 The THIRD DEGREE 63

Daniel Clark Tatum Eta Class of 2015 July 8, 1993 – February 14, 2021 Daniel Clark Tatum, 27, of Arlington, Virginia died Sunday, February 14, 2021. Born July 8, 1993 in New York, New York, he was raised in Princeton, New Jersey and attended St. Paul’s School. Daniel was a graduate of Notre Dame High School ’11 and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland. Daniel loved golf and grew up caddying at the National Golf Links of America. He was an avid snowboarder and runner. He had a passion for cars and would spend hours fixing up his old Volvo. He was often referred to as “Mr. Fix It” and would repair any appliance or electronic his roommates or grandparents needed. As he served as president of his fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa, he became an incredible leader and role model to his friends. He had an appetite for life and continued to live life to the fullest whether it be through traveling, drinking good bourbon, watching marvel comic movies, or spending time with family and friends. Daniel is survived by his loving parents Clark and Ann (Schnell) Tatum, his sister Elise Tatum, his grandparents John and Antonia Schnell, Sam and Marcella Tatum, his girlfriend Olivia Mathias, and several aunts, uncles and cousins including the Ellwood’s, the Helstrom’s, the Schnell’s, the Cunningham’s, and the Tatum’s.
