The Precious Pearls Cotillion Program is a 6-month program comprised of high school juniors and seniors. These young women demonstrate exemplary academic achievement, exceptional character, involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service. The program consists of activities designed to enhance the academic, social, cultural, and civic awareness of selected high school women and promote self-confidence, poise, and esteem among all participants. Workshops focused on topics pertinent to the young women of this community. The culmination of the program is the Cotillion Ball. The Norma Elizabeth Boyd Community Service Award is presented to the Debutante that has demonstrated exemplary civic service prior to joining the cotillion program. This Debutante has been involved in three or more community service organizations/programs during their high school career. The community service award is named after Ms. Norma Elizabeth Boyd, one of the founders and one of the incorporators of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Ms. Boyd served as Alpha Kappa Alpha’s first national corresponding secretary, former president of the Xi Omega Chapter in Washington, D.C. and as a North Atlantic Regional Director. It is fitting that the Community Service Award be named after Ms. Boyd as it is documented that she consistently rendered community service as a lifelong protector and advocate for civil liberties. Her diligence on this front earned her the distinction of being named an accredited observer of non-governmental organizations for the United Nations. Ms. Boyd was Alpha Kappa Alpha’s last surviving founder. The Marie Woolfolk Taylor Best Application Award is presented to the Debutante whose application and essay scored the highest in the areas of neatness, completeness, grammatical efficacy, and overall organization. The best application award is named after Alpha Kappa Alpha founder, Ms. Marie Woolfolk Taylor. Because of her passion and strong-willed nature, Ms. Woolfolk Taylor was selected by Ethel Hedgemon (one of the founders and hailed as the “Guiding Light” of Alpha Kappa Alpha) to help her make the case for the establishment of a sorority to the Howard University administration in the fall of 1907. Once the sisterhood was established, Ms. Woolfolk Taylor served as its first secretary, was a member of the first Constitution and Bylaws committee, and she also extended the invitations to the young women who were eventually added to the Sorority’s founding group. 2024 Debutante Awards The Debutante Program Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Upsilon Epsilon Omega Chapter 12
