Ql. As a result of a sedentary lifestyle, obesity among children is on the rise. As Gaurav Goyal, Head Boy
of Kendriya Vidyalaya, draft a speech on the importance of regular exercise in about 150 words, to be
delivered in the morning assembly of your school.
Ans. Respected Principal, teachers and friends, a very good morning to all of you. Today on the occasion of
World Health Day, I Gaurav Goyal will address you on the Importance of Regular Exercise.
People need to be active in order to be healthy. Our sedentary lifestyle and the facilities we enjoy have
transformed us into couch potatoes. Watching television for long hours, working on the computer, driving
the car for a short errand to the store and using elevators instead of stairs or ramps, all contribute to an
inactive lifestyle, which can result in serious health problems. The incidence of diabetes, hypertension and
heart diseases is on the rise particularly in urban areas, which can be attributed to a faulty lifestyle.
In order to stay fit, it is essential to be involved in light activities for a minimum period of 10 minutes and
then gradually move to more moderate ones. Walking, jogging, swimming and cycling are some of the
activites which ensure maximum health benefits. Scientists aver that a person should indulge in 60 minutes
of physical activity every day to improve one’s health. The time required depends on individual effort - as
you progress to moderate activities, you can cut down to 30 minutes, four days a week.
It is not necessary to indulge in strenuous physical activity to improve one’s health. Physical activities
should be incorporated into one’s daily routine. Take a walk in the morning to begin with. After three
months of regular walking you will notice the difference. It is often said that getting started is the most
difficult part, so friends make a beginning today and don’t give up!
Thank You

“Good morning respected judges, teachers and dear friends. I, ............... from Class …….…..... want to share
my views on the topic ‘................ .... ................... ...’ and I am speaking in favour of the motion/against the

Introduction: Begin with a quotation, question or interesting statistics.

Main points: Highlight the main points emphatically.
Develop points: Support them with relevant examples, statistics, etc.
Conclusion: State your own opinions or views in the concluding lines to emphasise your stand on the issue.
Thank you.
Example:
Write a debate for the topic Technology has made our lives simpler’.
Good Morning respected judges, teachers and dear friends. I, Radhika Joshi from Class XII, would like to share
my views on the topic ‘Technology has made our lives much simpler’ and I am speaking in favour of the motion.
Think of any work which cannot be done without technology! Be it operating a computer, simple calculations,
banking, shopping or even working in the kitchen, everything requires the use of technology. The work which
was earlier done manually by spending a lot of time is now done within seconds. Nowadays, people also have
the option to work from home and yet stay connected to their offices. We might be in any part of the world
and yet remain connected with our near and dear ones. Technology has made the world a smaller place. My
worthy opponents might say advancements in technology have created more unemployment since a single
person can use technology to do the work of many people. However, I would like to state that technology has
also created more job opportunities in varied fields. The only thing which is required is to equip ourselves with
the changes in the world of technology and remain updated. The world is growing with technology. It is a fact
that even without technology, our forefathers led a contented life. However, the steps that they had been taken
towards advancement has taken shape of the fruit that we are relishing at this stage. I would like to conclude
by emphasising that nothing comes easy in life. We have to be competent enough to use technology and not
become a slave to it.
Thank you.

Subject: Education Beyond Classroom Teaching.
Sir
The examination season has started. It has now become fashionable for some schools to go over-board
with the examinations. The schedule for junior classes resembles that of the Civil Service examination.
Most schools seem to believe that classroom education is the only stepping stone to success. In the
process, they overlook other talents and skills of students like music, painting and sports and qualities of
head and heart such as courage, chivalry, personality, wit and friendship. What are these schools doing to
inculcate these qualities in children? Instead of pushing and prodding the children like beasts of burden
and leaving them dazed and flabbergasted, they should aim for the overall development of children.
The main problem is our inability to live peacefully with others and our selfish mentality. The schools
should teach the students the age-old values of brotherhood, tolerance, team spirit, satisfaction. Co-
curricular activities have a vital role to play in this regard, Thus the schools should pay extra attention
to it while designing the curriculum. The interests of the students should be taken into consideration
to develop their skills. The education imparted should be practical and relevant to their life. The
examination system should stress more on understanding the subject than merely cramming facts.
Through the columns of your newspaper, I request you to create awareness among the public and the
concerned authorities, so that the education system can be re-vamped and children start enjoying their
studies and their school and college life.
Yours sincerely
Dr. Amit Verma

The Inspector
Police Station
Sharda Colony
New Delhi - 110023
Sub: Nuisance of loudspeakers
Sir
I wish to complain against the nuisance caused by loudspeakers in our locality despite the ban
imposed by the government.
Question Bank – English - XII 93
The blaring sounds of the loudspeakers throught the day are nothing but nuisance. The loud
noise emanating from religious places and party halls is the source of major discomfort. As
a result people cannot get peaceful sleep and students can hardly study. Though the users of
loudspeakers have been approached many times, they have not paid heed to any request.
It is, therefore, requested that the ban be imposed more strictly and those who flout the ban are
strictly punished.
I hope you will take necessary steps to control this nuisance as early as possible and take strict
action against the flouters of the ban.
Yours sincerely
Rajesh Kumar
