• Over the course of the next 16 weeks we will examine the decade of the 1960s through film, literature, pop-culture, and politics,
a serial killer the media dubbed “The Pied Piper of Tucson” Woodstock, the British Invasion, segregation, and more.

"Fortunate Son" is a song by Creedence Clearwater Revival
released on their album Willy and the Poor Boys in 1969. It was released as a single, together with "Down on the Corner.”

GRADING CRITERIA
A – 90-100 Work is excellent. Enthusiastic effort, original thinking, distinguished writing. The assignment demonstrates expertise and style and balances
creative and analytical thinking.
B – 80-89 Work is good. Genuine effort, sound thinking, solid writing. The assignment takes risks, holds promises, but still needs improvement.
C –70-79 Work is average, competent. Minimum effort, standard thinking, conventional writing. While the assignment is complete and glitch-less, it lacks
originality, invention, and creativity.
D – 60-69 Work is substandard. Poor effort, empty thinking, weak writing. The assignment is underwritten, incomplete, or riddled with careless mechanical
errors.
F--59 and below Work is either non-existent, indefensible, or a combination of the two.
Re vising papers is the best way to learn from mistakes and improve your grade! If you have questions about your paper, ask me. We may be able to solve
the problem quickly, but since I teach classes back-to-back, we may have to schedule another time. If I am unable to help you, visit the Writing Center. They
are wonderful. We have an online Writing Center that is wonderful as well.

I am a Zumba Instructor and invite you join me in the Fitness Center for a Zumba class.

If you decide to do so, you
may write an essay on your
experience for extra credit.

In addition to my passion for health and fitness, I love
motocross! On the weekends I score motocross events at Three Palms Motocross Park in Conroe, Rio
Bravo Motocross Park off Lake Houston Parkway, and Diamond Don’s Motocross Park. Motocross
athletes are passionate, polite and focused. Not only that, motocross is a family sport and I love that—
there is a bond between parents and their children and children and their parents that is unlike any I have
seen and it is generational. If anyone would like to go with me or come watch a motocross event—talk to
me, and again, if you write an essay about your experience you will earn yourself extra credit points.

We’ve been talking a lot about questions lately. As we segue into the next portion of our course questions are going to be
central to its theme. In the past students struggled at the outset—I’ll be honest, at some point they always, without
exception hit their stride and when they did it was an amazing shift. Students gained clarity in their thinking and as a
result clarity in their writing. Students’ confidence went through the roof and not pseudo-confidence from students who
were boastful and proud; rather, students who had a quiet sense of confidence that was unshakable.

Even so, students should not underestimate the complexity of crafting provocative questions. Indeed, it is, at least initially,
an exasperating challenge for most, me included. Be that as it may, learning how to craft compelling questions is also one
of the most gratifying abilities we can master. The tapestry of our lives is a compilation and manifestation of the questions
we have asked ourselves and others. While at the academy the questions we ask define the essays we write and the
research we do as either extraordinary or mediocre. Be extraordinary—

• Students will craft five thoughtful questions from the reading.
• Questions may be written as T or F; Multiple Choice; or Fill in the Blank (FIB).
• Students must cite the answer to their questions according to MLA guidelines in-text citations.
• Once questions have been approved they will be placed into a text bank.
• I will mine the test bank for questions that will be on quizzes.
• Questions for the midterm and final exam will be explicated from the quizzes as well as from the test bank.
• Students will write their quizzes and exams from the assigned readings.

COURSE: ENGL 1301 Composition & Rhetoric I

Lesson Title: A Collaboration of Sites and Sounds: Using Wikis to Catalog Protest Songs of the 60s

Bridge: Begin this lesson by playing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.” Most students will recognize the song as being one of their grandfather’s, uncles, or father’s favorite songs. Before you hand out the materials, ask the class to

speculate as to why you played this particular song.
BLOOM QUESTION: What do you think the “moral” of “Fortunate Son” might be?
Play snippets of other “recognizable” protest songs, including Dion’s “Abraham, Martin & John”; Janis Ian’s “Society’s Child”; and Tom Clay’s “What the World Needs Now.”

Ask the class if they can think of any other protest songs.

Students will work in pairs to examine and rhetorically analyze the lyrics to protest songs from the 60s.
