It is indeed a great pleasure to be given this opportunity to pen a few words in this handbook. This Academic Handbook is a vital guide for acquainting the students with summary of Commerce’s Academic information, policies and procedures that facilitate their intentions in relating with their academic requirements at the Seberang Perai Polytechnic. It is to generate a proactive and productive learning environment. It is therefore advisable that every student goes through this handbook thoroughly and endeavors to abide by the regulations therein for successful learning. The Commerce Department offers four programs of study, which comprised of Diploma in Accountancy (DAT), Diploma in Islamic Banking and Finance (DIB), Diploma in Business Studies (DPM), and Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (DLS). Students are encouraged to access all available resources including web-related information as well as printed materials. Students should ensure that relevant links to the resources and services available are accessed to help them along the way. They need to participate actively and positively in teaching and learning activities and to comply with programs and course requirements. 12 DIPLOMA IN ACCOUNTANCY (DAT) INTRODUCTION A career in accounting profession offers an excellent job prospect and great opportunity for career advancement. This profession is highly in demand as they are required in all sectors. The body of knowledge in accounting is to develop and communicate the financial information to stakeholders and other related parties for the purpose of decision making. Therefore, the need for graduates with adequate knowledge, skills and values in accounting is essential to fulfil the task. In addition, to meet the demand of producing 60,000 accountants by the year 2030, as part of nation’s talent-building agenda, the government will continue to strengthen the education system to ensure graduates are equipped with the right qualities and skills in line with the era of industrial revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0).(ASC, 2018). Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (DPCCE) takes initiative to meet this demand by offering the Diploma in Accountancy programme. The department hopes this programme will be a platform in providing continuous career advancement in the accounting field. SYNOPSIS The Diploma in Accountancy programme is designed to equip graduates with knowledge and skillsets through integrated educational experience in accounting disciplines including areas and sub-areas of financial and management accounting, auditing, taxation, finance, professional ethics as well as management knowledge, digital information, entrepreneurship, and interpersonal development. The objective of this programme is to provide the accounting education at SME professional level to meet the demands of both the public and private sectors. This programme is governed by both local and international accounting standards in accordance to requirements of accounting professional and other regulatory bodies in Malaysia to comply with the Programme Standards of Accounting issued by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA). JOB PROSPECT Students graduating from this programme will be able to land various job opportunities either in public or private sector. 17 DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS STUDIES (DPM) INTRODUCTION The business world is continuing to grow, expand and develop both in terms of scale and complexity. In this era of knowledge, challenges for competing and surviving today’s businesses are great. However, the advent of technology and globalisation has led to the development of several new strategies to meet the current demands and challenges and to be responsive to global needs which include the demand for multi-skilled workers. Hence, the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (DPCCE) has collaborated with relevant industries in curriculum revision for Diploma in Business Studies Program by getting their feedback on the latest information, knowledge and skills required to fulfil the job market requirements. The graduates in this program are expected to be proficient in core business-oriented subjects such as management, entrepreneurship, administration, human resource, economics, business process management and marketing. In addition, for planning a career path for graduates of this program, they will also be attached to the relevant industry for a semester of industrial training. SYNOPSIS Diploma in Business Studies (DPM) is a full-time program that consists of five academic semesters and a semester of industrial training which aims to increase and enrich students’ knowledge across a broad range of business disciplines and helps to prepare students for career challenges in contemporary business. This program provides students with value-added and transferable skills which enable them to adapt to new technologies and business challenges. The program structure ensures that all courses are connected and built on each other throughout the course, leading to a coherent education that matches the era of industrial revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) and is embedded with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) elements hence complies with the Program Standards of Business Studies issued by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA). 22 DIPLOMA IN LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (DLS) INTRODUCTION Logistics is the term widely used in the business field for the range of activities associated with the movement of storage and handling of materials. The Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management program is a 3-year program that aims to link and synchronise the marketplace, transportation systems, distribution network and manufacturing to ensure that services meet customer satisfaction. This program presents a broad view of logistics activities acquired through a combination of examinations, coursework, industrial attachments, and business projects in the final year. Students learn the relevant academic and vocational logistics management principles, skills and knowledge through innovative teaching and learning methodologies. This logistics program will help prepare students to responsibly manage various functions in the broad area of logistics, including freight, supply chains, transport, procurement, warehousing, and many other relevant areas. SYNOPSIS Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management is designed for those who want to pursue an exciting career in the field of Logistics and supply chain. They will gain a set of practical skills through a structured curriculum in logistics, including freight, supply chains, transport, procurement, and warehousing. Apart from technical knowledge and skills, the curriculum also emphasizes the development of the individual potential of students in an integrated and holistic manner through courses such as Islamic Studies, Moral Studies, Co-curriculum, and Entrepreneurship. JOB PROSPECT Graduates of this three-year program will embark on careers in the job market as Executives / Officers / Supervisors / Assistants in the logistic area. The industrial training in this program will provide opportunities for students to establish contacts with potential future employers. The concept of Islamic finance spread quickly and was tremendously embraced by the populace. This continuous development calls for strengthening the national strategy to enhance human capacity and induce greater sensitization in Islamic Finance. Therefore, the program of Diploma in Islamic Finance is tailored to satisfy the needs of the industry while adhering to polytechnics standards of excellent, generating competent and highly skilled graduates. This program is a three-year-full-time program consisting of five semesters of coursework with one additional full semester of industrial training, providing exposure the real working world. SYNOPSIS Diploma in Islamic Finance is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills in Islamic Banking and Financial areas, which are now among the fastest growing segments of global financial services. 33 ASSESSMENT Coursework (CA) Coursework is a continuous assessment that measures knowledge, practical skills, and generic skills. Coursework assessment mark comprises of knowledge and practical marks ONLY. The generic skill mark is not part of the coursework assessment mark. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 1. Students who will undergo Industrial Training must meet the requirements set out in the Management and Evaluation Methods of Polytechnic Industrial Training Guidelines currently in force. 2. Industrial Training Assessment will not be considered in determining student HPNM. 3. Students who fail Industrial Training need to repeat Industrial Training in the next semester and need to manage placement matters with reference to the Management and Evaluation Methods of Polytechnic Industrial Training Guidelines in force. 4. 38 INTRODUCTION 1. Course registration is held at the beginning of each semester within SEVEN (7) days from the date of the beginning of official semester. 2. Students should consult their academic advisor and the approval of the Head of the Academic Department before registration. 3. The amount of credit to be taken by the student for each semester is between TWELVE (12) to TWENTY (20) credits or as specified in the document Curriculum and Program Structure. 4. Students are allowed to take less than TWELVE (12) credits if they meet any of the conditions below: ® Last semester students; or ® Students following short semester; or ® Part-time students (KSS) or any program of its kind; or ® Students with Conditional Achievement (KS) in the previous semester and supported by Academic Adviser and get an approval from the Head of Academic Department. ADD / DROP COURSES 1. Adding and dropping the courses can be done at week THREE (3) and up to week SIX (6) of study session. Students should first seek the advice and support from the Academic Adviser and / or the Head of Programme before getting approval from the Head of Academic Department. 2. Students that fail in compulsory course, core course or specialized course, shall: ® Retake failed courses in the next semester. ® In the case of final year, students who TWO (2) or more courses during the previous semester are required to repeat ALL the failed paper in current semester. 3. For those who passed with a grade of C-, D+ or D for any courses: ® They are allowed to improve the grade of the course only once during their period of study. ® Students must follow entirely the retaken learning activities of that courses in any subsequent semester including short semester. ® Results for students who improve their grade for that course will be taken from the best grades. 39 ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT 1. Students must register to a the pertain course before being eligible for assessment or examination of academic achievement. 2. Attendance as determined has reached 90% per requirement for each course. The duration of study for a full-time Diploma program is a minimum of FIVE (5) semester and a maximum of NINE (9) semester. 3. 41 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT TO ENTER FINAL EXAMINATION 1. Students must meet the following conditions before qualifying for the final examination: Has registered the ALL the courses that have final examination at the beginning of the current semester. Passes the Continuous Assessment for courses with a minimum total mark of 40%. Has attended at least 90% or more lectures / tutorial / practical for specified period. The percentage of student attendance is calculated as follows: % of Attendance = Total Actual Attendance (hours) Proper Attendance (hours) x 100% 2. If the student does not meet the above requirement without any valid reasons; The student is not eligible to sit for the final examination. The student will be given Grade F with a point value of 0.00 for that course. The student will be considered to have taken the examination and failed the course. However, in certain circumstances the Director may use his discretion to allow the student to sit for the Final Examination. 3. If the student is suspended due to disciplinary action in accordance with Act 174; Students are not eligible to sit for the final examination. The evaluation for all courses in that semester that have final examination will be void if the students were caught of cheating in examination. Students need to retake the courses in the following semester. 4. All the above also apply to courses evaluated by coursework.
42 ATTENDANCE DURING THE FINAL EXAMINATION 1. Students must sit for a final examination for a course that requires them to do so. 2. For students who do not attend the final examination with reasonable cause, all coursework assessment scores will be considered. 3. For students who do not attend the final examination without reasonable cause, students will be given Grade F with a Score of 0.00 for the course. Students are considered to have taken and failed the course. 4. For students who are barred from sitting for the examination due to a sentence decided by the polytechnic disciplinary authority, students will be given Grade F with a Score of 0.00 Points for the course. Students are considered to have taken and failed the course. 5. For students who are barred from sitting for the final examination due to their continuous assessment marks less than 40%, student will not be given Grade F. they will still be given a grade with a score point based on their continuous assessment marks. THE EVALUATION SYSTEM 1. Malaysian Polytechnic evaluation system is based on the quantitative evaluation method of student performance in a program known as the Sistem Nilaian Mata (SNM). 2. According to SNM, student performance for a course is based on the Grade System where student achievement is assessed using two (2) measures, namely: i. Grade Point Average (GPA) or Purata Nilaian Mata (PNM) = ℎ ℎ ii. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or Himpunan Purata Nilaian Mata (HPNM) =

Assessment of each course is made periodically and continuously during the period of study in a semester refers to the method specified by the curriculum document. 2. Courses that do not involve final exams will be assessed 100% of coursework. 3. For courses assessed based on the evaluation of coursework and final examination, students are required to pass the continuous assessment with a minimum of marks of 40% to sit for the final assessment. GENERAL RULES OF ASSESSMENT METHOD 1. Final Examination Students must sit for the final examination for courses that require them to do so. The final examination period for a course depends on the level of study and credit points for the course. Students must get at least a passing mark of 20% in their final exam in order to pass the course.

Eligible to Continue Studies Students who get Kedudukan Baik (KB) and Kedudukan Bersyarat (KS) results are eligible to continue their studies to the next semester. students who didn’t archived the requirement marks as stated either in their final examination of in their continuous assessment need will be consider failing the courses and need to repeat the paper in the next semester. Students who are eligible for Industrial Training must meet the requirements set out in the Guidelines for Management and Evaluation Methods of Polytechnic Industrial Training. 3. Award Students considered to have graduated and are eligible to be awarded the Academic Certificate for a prescribed program if they have met the following criteria: a. Pass all the prescribed courses for the program. b. Get HPNM equal to more than 2.00. c. Fully obtain the amount of credit set for a program. d. Has been certified by the Examination Board and Certificate / Diploma Award of the Polytechnic. CATEGORY OF ASSESSMENT RESULT Assessment results for each semester will be categorized into: 1. Lulus Penuh (LP) Final semester students who obtain HPNM equivalent to or more than 2.00 are qualify and eligible to be awarded the Academic Certificate. 2. Kedudukan Baik (KB) Students earn HPNM equivalent to or more than 2.00. 3. Kedudukan Bersyarat (KS) Students earn HPNM equal to or more than 1.60 and less than 2.00. 4. Gagal dan Diberhentikan (GB) Failed and terminated positions will be given to students who: o Obtained HPNM less than 1.60; or o Obtain PNM less than 1.00; or o Failed a course THREE (3) times including special final examination or special assessment or short semester; or o Obtain KS results THREE (3) times in a row excluding short semesters; or o Failed Industrial Training TWO (2) times; or o Has exceeded the maximum period of study of a program.

Secara umumnya pelajar-pelajar hendaklah SENTIASA berpakaian menutup aurat (bagi pelajar Islam), kemas, bersih dan sopan ketika menghadiri kuliah dan aktiviti-aktiviti di politeknik. Semua jenis pakaian yang menjolok mata dan terlalu berfesyen adalah dilarang. Pemakaian kad pelajar adalah diwajibkan sepanjang berada di kawasan Politeknik.
