The Book of Life & Legacy
Overdose Awareness Day 2019
These memories were gathered on
National Overdose Awareness Day,
in Medford, Oregon, September 7, 2019.
May they cast the light of love
toward those memorialized in its pages
and toward the people who loved them.
The Purpose of Story
Stories move us. Our deepest hope is that the stories in this book shed
light on the importance of shifting our attention from how someone
died to who s/he was when alive. What was in his heart. How she
treated other people. How they loved.
Stories help us remember the depth, beauty, humor, and complexity
of the human beings we’ve loved who have died. Stories open the
cracks in our mourning to let in the light.
We are all human. We all have a story. And every story is filled with
many stories. Tiny ones and giant ones. Stories that bring a smile of a
tear. They are what make us, US. They are what make us human.
Stories remind us of who we are. They break through barriers of pain
and taboo and suffering to humanize and equalize all of us. Stories
hold power. Healing power. They help us remember his face, her
laugh, their song, and the humanity in all of us. Stories pay tribute to
our love.
May the spirits of those whose names and stories are
shared here live on in the hearts of those who cherish them
forevermore.
