IMPLEMENTATION The teacher explains with picture cards about safety measures when using the toilet/ bathroom. The teacher asks relevant questions based on the picture cards and guides pupils along by explaining how accidents can be prevented in the toilet. For example: o no running or playing in the bathroom o look out for slippery or wet floor o wear proper footwear when using the toilet (rubber slippers provide good grip) IMPACT Pupils will understand and follow safety measures in the toilet. For example: o the toilet/bathroom o near the window panes o near the bushes o at the front gate/grille door The pupils are asked to describe the dangers of playing in such areas. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher presents a slide show that illustrates dirty eating utensils. The teacher has a question-and-answer session to help students understand the consequences of using dirty eating utensils: o the use of dirty utensils can spread germs and cause people to fall sick (stomachache, diarrhoea, vomiting). o dirty utensils can attract pests and rodents that can transmit viruses, bacteria and various diseases. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher points out to the pupils the fire extinguisher in the classroom and explains the use of the fire extinguisher. Question-and-answer method may be used to encourage children to speak their thoughts about the fire extinguisher. The teacher then explains the dangers and consequences of mishandling fire extinguishers. For example, the content may spray out onto our faces and eyes. The pupils are asked to provide their own explanation of the dangers of playing with fire extinguishers. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher divides the class into groups of three/four. Each group will work on solving a 6-to-10-piece pictogram puzzle. The pupils name the type of danger represented by the pictogram once the puzzle is solved. The puzzles are rotated among the groups so every group has the opportunity to work on more than one pictogram puzzle. IMPACT Pupils will be able to identify hazard symbols and know that they should avoid such dangers as represented by the symbols. The teacher does this by presenting a slide show illustrating the different types of injuries that electronic devices can cause when safety rules are not adhered to. Pupils are asked to explain their thoughts on what victims of such accidents may have to deal with. For example: o no running in the classroom o waiting for your turn to use the slide The pupils are then told to explain their thoughts about what might happen if there were no rules at the preschool. The teacher may use picture cards to guide the discussion. IMPACT Pupils will know and be able to explain at least one safety rule in the classroom. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher prepares a velcro chart and a magic box containing picture cards of unsafe practices at home. The teacher picks picture cards from the magic box to discuss practices at home that could be harmful to us. The pupils are then asked to describe any dangerous practices at home that they can think of, and the potential harm of such practices. For example: o leaving the stove unattended may cause a fire o leaving cleaning supplies/detergent lying around in the house may result in young children ingesting these items o leaving the tap running (The teacher may guide the pupils with suggestive questions.) IMPACT Pupils will know, understand and be able to describe some practices at home that are dangerous or potentially harmful to themselves and others. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher fills a box with: medicines (cough syrup, tablets/pills, etc.) and food items commonly consumed by children (sweets, chocolate bar, packet drink, rice crackers, etc.) The teacher plays a game: o pupils pick an item from the box. o decide if the item is medicine or food. o decide if the item requires adult supervision when being consumed. The teacher helps the pupils to understand the safe use of medicines by asking suggestive questions. IMPACT Pupils will be able to recognise the importance of consuming medicine the proper way and with adult supervision. . IMPLEMENTATION The teacher shows a slice of mouldy bread and a slice of fresh bread. The pupils are asked to smell, see and identify which slice of bread is fresh and and which is mouldy. The pupils use their senses of smell and sight to differentiate between fresh and mouldy bread. The pupils give their reasons for choosing and eating fresh bread. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher prepares flashcards of healthy foods and unhealthy foods as well as sign cards: o Red colour (no) - sad o Green colour (yes) - happy The pupils need to say “yes” to healthy foods and “no” to unhealthy foods whenever the teacher shows them a flashcard. The pupils are asked to put together a jigsaw puzzle of unhealthy food. The teacher carries out a question-and-answer session with pupils about unhealthy foods that should be avoided to prevent ill-health. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher rings the bell to mark the beginning of the Take-5 activity. The pupils carefully and creatively prepare fruit satay. The pupils name the different types of fruits used. The teacher shows a skewer and talks about the dangers of sharp skewers. The teacher tells the pupils about precautions to take during the preparation of fruit satay, such as not running around while holding the skewers. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher puts a paper plate and some picture cards (foods) in front of the class. The pupils are asked to come forward one by one and take 1 picture card of the food that they eat at home for breakfast. The pupils put their selected picture on the plate. IMPLEMENTATION The teacher divides the pupils into 3 groups. Each group will get one basket. The pupils are asked to pick only flashcards of nutritious foods to put into their group’s basket. The pupils are required to explain why they think their chosen food item is nutritious. IMPACT Pupils will be able to recognise and differentiate between nutritious foods and non-nutritious foods. SAFETY SEGMENT NUTRITOUS FOOD ACTIVITY CAN I EAT IT? KSPK LEARNING STRAND Communication OBJECTIVE To provide knowledge for and exposure to recognising edible items (food). IMPLEMENTATION The pupils are given 2 cards (YES or NO). The pupils raise either a “Yes” or a “No” card based on their judgement whether the item in the picture card shown by the teacher is edible or inedible. The pupils are asked if they think an item is edible (food) or not. IMPACT Pupils will be able to recognise and differentiate between edible (food) and inedible items around them.
