7.2 Series of talk - The Beauty of Physics and Mathematics 2023 Dr. Mohamad Nazri has spearheaded "The Beauty of Physics and Mathematics," a series of engaging talks since 2016, aimed at highlighting the captivating aspects of Physics and Mathematics for both school students and the general public. The program comprises four distinct modules tailored to various audiences: "Keindahan Sains Melalui Fizik dan Matematik" (for primary school students), "The Beauty of Physics and Mathematics" (for secondary and university students), "Beautiful Physics/Beautiful Maths" (for Physics and Math Teachers), and "Science, Technology, and Society" (for parents and the public). Since its inception, this initiative has conducted over 130 series, involving more than 300 schools. In 2023, during its 7th year, nine enlightening sessions took place at prominent educational institutions, including Kolej Permata@Pintar in UKM, Bangi; SM Sains Kubang Pasu in Kedah; Expo STEM Sg. Petani at SMK Ibrahim; SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi in Kepala Batas, Penang; Penang Math Teacher at UoW KDU, Penang; SMK Gunung Semanggol in Perak; SMK Seremban 3, Negeri Sembilan; Perlis Math Teacher at UniMAP Perlis; and MRSM Tun Ghazali Shafie in Kuala Lipis, Pahang. 7.3 STEM EduAction with DAMAT IMK is seriously involved in promoting and boosting Mathematical interest among primary school pupils by participating in STEM EduAction with DAMAT series of invitations from schools, non-government agencies and Science Centre. The initiatives which were begun in 2021 are implemented in response to the deteriorating number of primary school students who are interested in mathematics. 9.0 International Collaboration & Linkage 9.1 Academic Visit to Higher Education Institute at Bogor, Bandung and Tasikmalaya, Indonesia On January 30, 2023 until February 3, 3023, our academic delegation (Prof. Dr. Ismail Mohd and Ts. Dr. Wan Zuki Azman Wan Muhamad) visited the six higher education institutions/school/office at Bogor, Bandung and Tasikmalaya, Indonesia as follows : 1. Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) 1 Negeri Tasikmalaya The primary aim of this visits is delving into the forefront of Mathematics/Statistics research and establishing potential collaborative ventures. The visit encompassed a series of enriching activities, including guided tours of cutting-edge research labs, presentations by delegations on recent breakthroughs, and engaging discussions on emerging trends and challenges in the field. Noteworthy observations included the institute's commitment to an interdisciplinary approach, with a convergence of expertise from mathematics and statistics. The outcomes of the visit were promising, as contacts were established between researchers from both institutions, paving the way for potential collaborative projects. 9.2 Visiting Lecturer at Termez State University (TerSU) , Uzbekistan: A Collaborative Academic Experience IMK was honored with the appointment of Visiting Lecturer to one of our staff members i.e. Dr Fatanah Deraman (expertise in pure mathematics), at Termez State University, Uzbekistan (TerSU) from 4th - 24th September 2023. Besides the task as Visiting Lecturer, the visit also aims to collaborate with TerSU faculty members and researchers on joint research projects; deliver lectures, workshops, and seminars to students, sharing knowledge and expertise; promote cross-cultural understanding and strengthen academic relationships between UniMAP and TerSU. TerSU is a public institution in the capital of Surkhandaryan province, an ancient city close to the border with Afghanistan. The university was founded in 1954 as Termez Teacher Training Institute. TerSU or Termez Davlat University (TerDU) is a prestigious institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and innovation. 101 IMK ANNUAL REPORT 2023
The visit as a visiting lecturer at TerSU yielded several positive outcomes: 1. Strengthened Academic Collaborations: the collaborative research projects initiated during visit have the potential for future joint publications and grant applications, 2. Enhanced Student Learning: Students benefited from exposure to diverse teaching styles and perspectives, which contributed to their academic growth, 3. Increased Cultural Awareness: the delegation gained a deeper appreciation of the country's culture and history, which will inform future research and teaching, 4. Academic Networking: The visit facilitated the establishment of lasting professional connections with colleagues at TerSU and also a few universities in Tashkent, and the broader academic community. The experience as a visiting lecturer at TerSU was both professionally and personally rewarding. It reaffirmed the importance of international academic collaboration and the power of cultural exchange in shaping global perspectives. 9.3 Academic Visit to Hasanuddin University, South Sulawesi, Indonesia On 22 May 2024 until 24 May 2024, a delegation from IMK conducted an academic visit to Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam, Hasanuddin University. The primary objective of the visit was to explore potential collaborations, gain insights into statistics and mathematics research. During the visit, the delegation engaged in a series of activities, including visiting lecture by Prof. Dr. Ismail Mohd and Ts. Dr. Wan Zuki Azman Wan Muhamad. The Department of Mathematics and Department of Statistics showcased notable strengths in applied mathematics, computer science and statistics. One significant aspect of the visit was establishment of new contacts, identification of potential collaboration opportunities and transfer of knowledge. The UNHAS demonstrated a commendable commitment to future collaborations cross the faculties between UniMAP and UNHAS. The academic visit resulted in International Research Grant potential collaborations, knowledge exchange initiatives and joint publications. Moving forward, the insights gained during the visit will be integrated into dual degree curriculum, shared in seminars (ICNOOR 2023) and research collaboration in Mathematics and Statistics. In conclusion, the academic visit proved to be a valuable experience, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between UniMAP and UNHAS. 9.4 Official visit by IMK to Andalas University in West Sumatra, Indonesia. To enhance internationalization and collaborative efforts, IMK conducted an official visit to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Andalas University (UNAND) from November 22 to 24, 2023. Led by Dr. Maz Jamilah Masnan, IMK's director, the delegation included Dr. Mohamad Nazri Abdul Halif, IMK's deputy director for research, and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Wan Zuki Azman Wan Muhamad. The primary objective was to present UniMAP's Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore academic and research collaboration opportunities with UNAND's Department of Mathematics and Data Science, focusing on matching grants and overseeing postgraduate students. The visit also aimed to spotlight IMK's postgraduate program and its collaboration with IMK's six thrust research areas: Applied Mathematics, Engineering Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research, and Theoretical Physics. Upon arriving at Andalas University on November 22, an official meeting with the executive committee of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences took place to discuss the purpose of the visit. On the second day, FMIPA organized a one-day research seminar at Plaza FMIPA. The program concluded with a visit to the new UNAND Central Laboratory.
