To work patiently even in adverse condition
To remain active in work with a good intention
To make the best use of opportunity
To get ready for service and co- operation
To work with team spirit
To be inspired for a model character

Devi Ram Gurung was born in Tilche village of Manang. He was called by his first name
Devi. He was from a poor family background. His parents had died in his childhood.
He lived with his elder brother and sister at home. But they could not take care of
him properly. In despair, Devi came to Kathmandu with bare feet. His street life got
started since he had nothing for survival. He used to roam the roads all over the day.
He used to spend the night by sleeping on the pavement of temples. Most of the
time he went to different places in search of food with his friends. In that way, he
lived on whatever he could get his hands on.
One day, Devi Ram got a job at a restaurant in Thamel where lots of tourists from

abroad used to visit. Some tourists used to visit the restaurant regularly. One American
couple who used to visit the restaurant more frequently were impressed with Devi
Ram and his good behaviors; and proposed Devi Ram to visit America with them.
Devi Ram decided to go as he would have greater opportunities and be able to do
more with his future.
Because of his good conduct and diligence, he finished school and college education
in America, where he studied Health Science for his higher studies. Devi had got an
idea of social service since he began to work at the restaurant in Thamel . At that
time he had wished to amass enough money so that he could run a grand hotel like
the one the restaurant had been in. Beside this, he wished to open a health centre
for remote villages as he would like to help the people living there. His heart was
pure and clean.
As he had wanted before, Devi Ran has now established a health service organization
which aims to treat patients from the villages and raise their quality of life The
programs are going to be conducted according to his plan. His friends have also
helped him a lot.
Devi Ram has never forgotten his past. When he comes back to Kathmandu, he gathers
the street children and gives them food items, clothes and sanitation materials. He
has done this work in remembrance of his hard life in the past. He also works on
education awareness. He has managed teaching materials for those children that
are deprived of education. He says that he prefers to cry when he thinks of his past.
Now he feels as if he has been reborn. Devi Ram has now become a reputed social
worker moving beyond his bitter past of the street child.
We should also follow the footsteps of Devi Ram and his noble conduct. We should
set a goal to do service to the society through serving others. This is the way how
human life becomes meaningful.

Summary
A great deed makes a great person. Everyone can become great if they have cour-
age, discipline, patience, and diligence. In order to achieve one's goal one should
face even an adverse situation boldly and should take it easily. To perform duty
constantly means to lay the foundation of a good character. People with selfless
motives always become examples to others and are regarded as the source of
inspiration. They show the right way to lead the society ahead. They can lead
society through their illustrative works.

Asim, Pema, Hamid and Yogendra study at the same school. Their school has resumed
after a long vacation. Now it is their lunch break, so they are talking about the things
they had seen and done in their vacation. They seem extremely enthusiastic to share
the experiences to each other

Asim: Do you know what I did during the vacation?

Pema: (laughs) How should we know unless you have said?

Hamid: I heard you had gone on a tour.

Yogendra: Listen, Asim Tell us your story first. Then, we will tell ours too. Tell us
your experiences.

Asim: Yes, I went to Pokhara, Lumbini and Tilaurakot with my parents during
vacation. Then I came to know Tilaurakot is the ancient Kapilvastu of
our country. Right from there, we visited Madarsa nearby. We attended
some religious rituals being performed there. What I learnt from it was
that any religion plays a vital role in improving our conduct and behavior.

Pema: I went to visit my maternal uncles house. I visited the Gumbas with my
mama (maternal uncle) and listened to the Lama’s preaching. The things
he said while preaching were very useful and interesting indeed.

Hamid: I didn’t go anywhere else. Actually, I read Namaj daily. I do not eat any-
thing without doing it. It’s compulsary in my house and must be done.

Yogendra: I also went to Saptah (Shreemadbhagwat Gyan Mahayagya) where I was
inspired how to enjoy listining a religious preaching. Since I listened to
it, I have learnt how to be good and disciplined.

Asim: You know, guys, religiousness is not just about going on pilgrimages.

Pema: What else is there then, Asim?

Hamid: You are ignorant…..! religious is to pray to god and to read religious
books, isn’t it?

Yogendra: These activities are also called religious activities because they are closely
linked with religion. But I think the main spirit of religion is something
different, isn’t it?

Asim: Yes, all of you are right. All the religions in the world have the same
spirit. It seems that any religion, may it be one or another, inspires us
to have good conduct and to do a noble work. So, we too, should be
inspired in doing a good work.

Pema: Then, what does a noble deed mean?

Hamid: It means good conduct, good behavior, and selfless service, doesn’t it?

Yogendra: Not only that much; It includes all other things such as peace, truth,

6 Moral Education -7

kindness, love, non-violence etc. mentioned in our religious literature,
aren’t they Asim?

Asim: Of course, to be religious is to have patience; to forgive; to avoid theft; to dis-
card egocentrism and to purify both body and soul. To speak truth, to discard
jealousy and to prepare oneself for peace and generosity etc. are the
essence of all the religions. It will be better if one lives life in the light
of all these virtues. And these I think are only the teachings that our
religious books tend to give.

Pema: Yes, these are what I perceived in Gumba too.

Hamid: Why not? The same things are taught for us to apply in our daily life; in
the place where I recite Namaj.

Yogendra: In conclusion, the essence of all religions is similar, isn’t it, Asim?

Asim: Exactly, every individuals should do work for public concerns whole–
heartedly. The essence of the religions is to prosper human life with
complete relief by means of peace and courtesy.

Pema: It sounds very good. It must be implemented in our practical life.

Hamid: Whatever religion you may follow, the main sense is the same.

Yogendra: Yes. What a peaceful, prosperous and heavenly pleasant world would
be if the things Asim said were put into practice!

Asim: If so, let’s make a promise that together we shall reflect these things in
our behavior. Why to delay for the good work?

Pema: Ok, it’s done.

Hamid: Done is done.

Yogendra: Unity is the best things for a noble work. After all unity is also an essence
of religion. It is known that we should have a mutual understanding in
terms of religion and culture. It is a better way of living a happy life. The
assumptions and values of all the religions should be respected. It is
what we came to know; let’s share this with other friends in our class.

Then, Tiffin break was over. The bell rang and they moved to their class.

Lesson 3 Let’s Be United

Expected Behaviors:
• To maintain peace and harmony within the family and society
• To deny individual discrimination
• To show generosity and tolerance towards everyone
• To act in favours of family and society
• To help in establishing a civilized society
• To state the importance of harmonious society and act accordingly

Nisha and Vibha are from a village of Rautahat district. They are very close friends.
They have been studying together since their childhood. They stand first in of the
class alternately. Everyone admires their studies as well as their friendliness.

It was a holiday. They played on the school ground for a long time. As they felt
thirsty, they went to Nisha’s house and thereby, Nisha’s mother offered them juice.
It was very tasty. They asked her mother why the juice was so tasty. She said that
the right ingredients like water, sweet etc. made it tasty. Actually her mother had
given the example of juice in order to explain the need of making such balance in
every aspect of life.

Instructional Suggestions:

Draw your students’ attention towards the factors that can isolate people from their family and
society; and ask them to prepare a list of their preventive strategies.

Involve your students in a class discussion about the advantages of a balanced and harmonious society.

Moral Education -7 11

She also explained the necessity of harmony in our family and society. According
to her, social balance and inter relations are required not only for our house but
also for the entire world. Harmony in religion, culture, ideology, race, class, gender
and occupation makes our society, country or the world a better place to live in. A
better world grants the entire human race a better living. A harmonious family or
society facilitates a better living for us. We need a harmonious society so as to live
in our family comfortably and act accordingly. The beauty of our society lies in the
integrity of its variety. The house, family and society where there is decent thought,
intimacy, co-operation and unity as an integrated whole, that grants us peace and
comfort. If the community lacks the harmony between social elements, both peace
and comfort in life gets lost. The harmony of all the social elements indeed makes
our society civilized and easy enough to live. If we exhibit some good qualities like
benevolence, kindness, consideration, tolerance etc. and harmonize all the factors
that affect social integrity, our family, society and country becomes as a heaven .
Then, paradise and the outcome of peace and happiness cannot be compared.

Nisha and Vibha were highly impressed with her mother’s ideal thought. They
came to know that decent thought, polite words and good deeds can make a good
balance in the society. They realized that they can maintain balance and harmony
if they work for the welfare of not only themselves, but also for others too. As we
take a balanced diet to be fit and healthy. We need something to maintain a balance
between our individual life and our society in the same way. The very factors that
harmonize society are noble thought, sociability, peace, benevolence, kindness,
consideration, patience and co-operation. That was what Nisha and Vibha learnt
that day. They took it whole-heartedly. They would like to share it to their friends
at school. Mother, also advised them not to delay for noble work.

Summary

A civilized and prosperous family or society requires some fundamental elements
such as right thought, intimacy, peace, benevolence, kindness, consideration etc.
A proper balance among these elements brings about progress and prosperity
in a family as well as society. Each individual and society has its own identity. If
the contrast increases, the difficulty level in the society also increases. In order
to civilize our citizen, family and society, we need to minimize the contrast as
such and encourage co- ordination amongst individuals. An overall develop-
ment of the society depends upon a well treatment of individuals amongst one
another. It is the only way to bring about a positive change in the country along
with the whole universe.

Lesson 1 Helping Hands

Expected Behaviours

To take interest in social work and to get regularly involved in it.

To be actively aware of environmental conservation and act positively from this
knowledge.

To form the habit of mutual co- operation.

There were still a few days before our winter vacation began and our teacher
proposed us to visit Sauraha for two days. He talked to our parents and told us to
be ready for the trip. All of our friends were excited to hear it. I was also happy
to have a chance to go away with my teacher. My grandfather used to say that
he used to stay away from the house for several months. It encouraged me to
visit places which I had not seen or visited before. I had heard something about
Sauraha in Chitwan, but this time I had an opportunity to visit it, So I became
unusually excited.

We thirty students of class seven became ready to go on the trip and gathered
on the school compound. The teacher had managed a bus for it. Each of us had a
bag, packed lunch along with snacks that had been prepared for us . We kept them
safely inside the bus. We kept them safely inside the bus. A first aid kit had been
arranged for any emergencies. I became quite assured to see the teacher’s well
preparation for the trip.

We left for Sauraha at around eight in the morning. There was a dense forest all
the way around and we wished we had such a forest in our village. We came across
some streams and rivulets with clear water. We thought, if we clean our Kamere
Khola , water could also be clear as on this river. The bus stopped for a while and
the teacher gave us some snacks. He even led us to the nearby river where we
could see various kinds of fish which looked lovely. We wanted to stay for a long
time when we saw the crystal clear water with moving fishes in the river which was

Instructional suggestions

Take your students to an important local place which is accessible to the school
as well as the students, and ask them to state social norms and values they have
learnt from it afterwards.

social backgrounds. Ask them what kinds of social values and assumptions they
have; tell them to prepare a list of them and involve them in a class discussion.

flowing in the middle of the green forest.
Our bus stopped again after a two hour long drive from the place where we had
had our snacks. It was, of course lunch time. The teacher informed us that the bus
would stop there for one hour. The place looked pleasant as it bridged the hilly
region and the Terai region. We had lunch and then rested for a while. Meanwhile,
we saw some volunteers cleaning the road and the surrounding of a temple. Then
we further learnt that they were going to conduct a socio-cultural programme the
following day. We, together with our teacher, helped the volunteers until the bus
moved. The local people thanked us for our help.
At 4 pm, the bus reached a guest house near Sauraha which we stayed at and got
to know well during our time there. We had supper and talked for a while about
our travel and other events that had taken place during it and also made plans to
visit Sauraha the next day before going to bed.
As planned, we reached the entrance gate of Sauraha with our teacher the next
day. The people living there were of different social groups with different life styles
and interests. There were lots of foreign tourists who wore a diverse range of

clothes. Indeed I loved the fascinating features of Sauraha and we began to visit
different places in Sauraha each in turn.
Sauraha, a tourist centre, was surrounded by a thick forest. The forest had many

16 Moral Education -7

plants and bird species. The surrounding area was melodious with the sweet songs
of birds. Some tourists took elephant rides. A herd of deer was grazing on an open
ground. There was a rhino too. The surrounding of Sauraha was impressive to see
with all the different flora and fauna. The teacher said that we could keep our
village as clean and peaceful as Sauraha if we worked together. The small steam
and ponds had only added more beauty to the jungle.

It was nearly evening when we returned to the guest house after a day-long walk.
On the way back, we saw a big stretch of paddy field. People were seen keeping
their harvest in. Everyone was assigned to do a specific job. Some of them were
bringing the bundles of paddy, and some of them were threshing the grains off,
and some others were filling the sacks with rice grains. A group of workers were
carrying the sacks to their homes. Some people were making bundles of hay and
others were shifting it to somewhere else. All of them seemed to have given an
equal importance to their own work. Both having meal and keeping the harvesting
on were in turn by turn.

We were thirsty. We didn’t know where any drinking water was. Our teacher asked
one of the workers who was filling a sack, where to find water and he went and
fetched a pitcher of water for us. We helped him by filling sacks, and then we
quenched our thirst and thanked him. In this context, the teacher explained that
mutual help like this makes all the work possible.

The next day, we returned home, viewing beautiful scenes along the way. What
I realised now is that knowledge is obtained not only by reading books but also
by visiting different places as well as persons. Now my confidence is increased to
believe that human value can be raised not buying in society, but creating ourselves.

Summary

A human act needs confidence and is done in favor of truth. It requires mutual
affection and understanding, individual care and the provision of equal
opportunity. We should bear on our responsibility intently and peacefully. We
should behave in a way that is just because the way we behave shows our true
sense of social values. How such behaviors are developed in humans is the
central idea of this lesson.

Moral Education -7 19

I got up at 5 o’ clock in the morning and heard the sound of people walking
along the road; They were out walking out. I knew from my mother that it was
Balachaturdasi. It was holiday yesterday, so we had worked in our field all day. It
was to work in a group! I realized and also knew, that we can feel pleasure if we do
what we can. The elders were right to say that one should do the work by oneself.
I used to think that it was not good to work in the field after being educated. But I
was wrong in this notion. Working in the field in the spare time is a good utilization
of time. For example, it lessens the burden of our family members. In addition
to this, whilst studying develops ones mental faculties, mutual labour results in
physical development. Honesty and skill, also, count a lot in the work.
Jhankalal Dai, our neighbor works very hard. He gathers fodder all the morning;
milks the cows and sweeps up dung. At daytime and evening, he supervises the
grazing cattle. The day before, he asked his son to feed the cows with fodder,
but his son refused to do the work saying that dung smells horrific and stains his
clothes. He asked his father frequently why he does this kind of filthy work. How
could we cultivate the land if we didn’t do this work? What would we drink if there
was no milk? How would we produce grain if we had no manure? How would we
survive if there was no grain? I’m quite impressed with Jhankalal brother’s hard
work, diligence and stamina. I think I should follow his footsteps by making some
changes to myself with similar skills like proficiency and honesty.

20 Moral Education -7

In the morning, the brother Babulal came to our house. He had built our house last
year. We couldn’t do the work as he did. Our society operates with the exchange
of skills and proficiency of every individual. A single occupation cannot sustain our
society and its components. A variety of skills benefit people living in a society or
community.

I went to sister Thapini’s shop in the afternoon. I wanted to see the dress she had
tailored, it was really beautiful. So many people come to her to get their clothes
stitched. Everyone respects her and her occupation. She had a direct contact in
the textile industry who arranged for some garments to be brought straight to her
shop. Her staff arrange them in the storeroom properly . Sister Thapini stitches
different types of clothes according to requirements. There is an occupational
relationship among industrialist, laborers, tailors and customers in the society.
Various occupations and business activities help each other. Therefore, we should
show a respect towards all the occupations and offer help to them.

In the evening brother Santaman from Ratdanda came to my house. He waves
bamboo basket which is an essential object for a village life. It is very useful to
carry things from one place to another. For a porter it becomes very difficult to do
the work without a basket. Besides this, it is used to carry patients to hospital in
rural areas. Some people do not give more importance to waving basket. If so, who
will feel its importance?

Carpets and blankets are woven in sister Dilmaya’s house. Costumers come to
buy these things from distant places. Everyone admires her carpets and blankets.
She waves them perfectly well and sells them in a reasonable price. So her supply
is favorable to all. Sister Dilmaya works not only for profit but also for service.
Therefore everyone likes and respects her. If we gave priority to these works, all
the classes in the society would be benefitted. We would obviously be prosperous
if we could create a market for these local products produced from local expertise
and efforts.

It is bed time. But my mind is fully occupied with glimpses of various people and
things. Two months ago, all the villagers had gone to the bank of Sunkoshi River for
picnic. We had had a bus reserved and reached there in time. It became possible
because of the driver who had driven the bus smoothly. I knew for the first time
that the responsibility of a driver is very serious. I realized that his responsibility
directly related to the security of human life, is not less important than any other
work. Driving, that helps people to reach their desired destination safely and
comfortably, is equally important as other occupations are.

A man was helping some pedestrians to cross the Sunkoshi River by boat. It was
great of him to assure the pedestrians and make them cross a big river in a small
boat. From it, I got the fact that everything is not possible even if we have money

Moral Education -7 21

and desires. Now I have concluded that everyone is endowed with a skill at least,
and thereby becomes proficient. For this he deserves respect.
An occupation itself is not great or meager. All the occupations are equally
important or valuable in their own respect either it is dumping site management
or aeronautics. Some people carve a beautiful statue and draw public attention.
Some others earn both name and fame by climbing mountains. Some people have
performed their duty sincerely in their jobs and earned prestige. People in the
society choose their occupations depending on the condition of family and society
along with their own interest. Status of one’s occupation depends upon his/her
attitude, behavior and perseverance. Action determines whether one is more
prestigious or less. Society runs by the means of occupations and professions.
After all I have also been able to write this many things. My society requires me
and my contribution to make itself lively. Let’s do precisely whatever we do. Let’s
feel proud of our own work which is praise worthy and also let’s pay respect to
the right work done by others. We get satisfied by doing this. In addition to this it
brings about peace and co- operation in our society.

Summary
Human society is a unity in diversity. It consists of various thoughts, activities,
physical existence, occupations as well as professional activities. Human
necessities can be fulfilled by all these activities. Whatever occupation one may
have, he or she deserves respect because of his/her proficiency, honesty, and
responsibility. The choice of his/her occupation doesn’t necessarily make him
or her respected or ignored. Everyone in the society is benefited if we respect
our local traditional activities and encourage them to come up. To protect our
traditional occupations is to uplift the nation too. It is one of the fundamental
bases to protect our occupational value.

Lesson 3 Honesty

Expected Behaviors:

• To demonstrate honesty in one's profession and business

• To build up a valued and admired individual

• To be a role model of a virtuous and respected personality in the society

• To be ready to carry out own duty and responsibility

These days, the residents of Nayanpur village are very happy. They are happy
because Kritimani, one of the members of their community, is felicitated from
everywhere for his good works. He served the country for long time by working
in various posts in government services. Whatever he did, he did only good. The
government has felicitated and awarded various prizes for his good works. Different
organizations and institutions also have honored him for his works. Now he is back
to his own village, Nayanpur. The villagers warmly welcomed and felicitated him.
After the felicitation program, the villagers asked him different questions. Kirtimani
answered all the questions as follows:

Sunil: From where did you get the inspiration to be honest?

Kirtimani: I used to read moral tales from the childhood. I used to obey my
parents. I was in connection with the good people. I heard from
them that if we are honest we can be a good person. From these all
I got the inspiration to be an honest.

Vaijayanti: Did your family also help you to be honest?

Kirtimani: Of course. My parents used to give high value to honesty. Their
principle was that any property that we earn from dishonesty or
hurting others is very temporary and goes away in a moment. This
helped me to be honest to a great extent.

Anisha: How can we be honest if our parents are honest?

Instructional Suggestions:

conduct a discussion in the class on what type of honest behaviors students are
supposed to show in the school and also suggest them as they need.

Ask the students to collect information about an honest person of the community
and ask them to share in classroom what they learnt from him/her. Also give some
feedback to students.

24 Moral Education -7

Kirtimani: Listen! Sweet girl, our home, parents, family, and community have
great influence over children. The place where you go to study is not
Biltu: only your school. Your home, family, community, and surrounding is
Kirtimani: also like your school. The impressions of our school life remain till
old age. Hence, our home, family, parents and our community play
Jagat: a great role to make us honest.
Kirtimani:
Where should we be honest then?
Kapil:
Kirtimani: There should be honesty in our every work. People think that

we have to be honest only in
government service and business.
That’s not good. Each and every
work that we perform needs
honesty. Honesty is our good
friend, dishonesty is an enemy
created by ourselves. Workplace,
service, business everywhere we
need honesty. People perform
different types of religious works, honesty is equally important
there too. There is no place where honesty is not needed.

What harm does dishonesty bring?

I just told you dishonesty is our enemy. What harm is not done by
an enemy? People get bad name from dishonesty. They have to face
legal penalty. What could be greater punishment than a bad name
to the people who want to live proudly? In our ancient scriptures
bad name is considered to be more painful than death. Why should
we bear the bad name being dishonest? Dishonesty destroys people
and leads towards the hell.

What should we do to be honest?

The main cause of dishonesty is your excessive desire or greed
for something. So we should not have any craze or attachment to
anything. Take an example: if we have satisfied our hunger or if
we do not have appetite, we do not eat anything for a long time.
If we keep on eating, we may fall sick. Similarly, if we accumulate
something more than we need that leads us to dishonesty. Though
it gives us satisfaction for a moment, ultimately we earn bad name
from those activities. The result of dishonesty comes quick whereas
the result of honesty is long lasting. Therefore, one who desires for

Moral Education -7 25

more than he/she needs is called a thief in our holy scriptures.

Nimba: Please tell us other benefits of honesty.

Kirtimani: Honesty gives peace to our heart. We don't need to go through any
tensions. We get respect and appreciation in our society. People
trust us. We can be the role model of a good personality. We should
not face any legal difficulties as well. It promotes the prestige of our
coming generations too. The honest people are always remembered
and have good name even after death. Being involved in social work/
service we get admiration and reputation. What benefit do we need
more than that?

Rojiadevi: Is corruption a kind of dishonesty? How can we control it?

Kirtimani: Yes. Corruption is also a kind of dishonesty. Corruption is in fact
dishonesty entirely to the nation. It is a bad name for an individual
and problem of a nation. Various measures are taken to control it.
Different organizations have been established and are working to
control corruption. The most important thing to control corruption
is people must bring change in their attitude. One should not
think that others are corrupted so I will also be the corrupted one.
Everyone must think that if I could be honest, everyone would be
honest. This is one of the measures to control corruption. Corrupted
people should be socially boycotted.

Rajesh: What should we do to promote honesty?

Kirtimani: Honest people should be honored by providing opportunity and
encouragement. We should follow their footsteps. One must be
able to decide right and wrong deeds and act accordingly. He/she
must identify the difference between good and bad behaviors. If it
could be maintained, corruption would be ended and the honesty
can be flourished.

Summary

People should be honest in their professions. This helps to shape a good citizen
in a society and promote awareness about the good manner and good deeds.
Dishonesty is a form of corruption. Excessive desire of something makes one
dishonest and the corruption is rooted and promoted from there. If an individual
is well-conscious and the nation and society are active, we can easily eradicate the
corruption. The surest weapon to control corruption is acting with honesty in each
and every profession or business.

fishes that in the lake and eat them up. The time was going normally. Among
the birds, one crane was a bit taller than others. He was named Lambakantha.
One day Lambakantha thought "…if I could chase all other birds away, I would
be able to eat all the fishes of this lake." Then he started troubling other birds.
He started seizing others' food, making them injured by picking them. When
Lambakantha's such activities kept on going, other birds said, "We also have
to get to eat and we have to have security."Lambakantha replied proudly "You
must be wise to get fishes and you have to be strong enough to be secure".
After Lambakahtha's irritating behavior, every bird started living separately
in the tree. Lambakantha started eating all the fishes by himself. He went on
growing fat. He was being more proud. He used to live in the bank of the lake
calmly. He used to eat up the fishes that came nearby. There lived a crocodile
in the same lake. Suddenly, one day the crocodile caught the Lambakantha
and clipped it in his mouth. Lambakantha was horrified. He asked for the help
with other birds that were living in the tree. He pleaded "Help! Help!". All the
other birds suggested Lambakantha "Use your wisdom and strength to save
yourself."Lambakantha admitted his fault. He promised not to repeat that type
of mistakes. By seeing this all the birds started attacking the crocodile and
saved Lambakantha. The crocodile ran away leaving Lambakantha there. That
day onwards Lambakantha started living with others in harmony.

Learning Outcomes : 29
To implement the qualities of a good citizen in practice
To be conscious and behave according to the moral responsibilities
To follow the social values and norms
To maintain unity, mutual understanding and harmony in society

Moral Education -7

Lesson 1 OUR RIGHTS

Expected Behaviours:

To behave in accordance to the civil duties and rights

To develop qualities of a good citizen

To inspire others to follow and respect the civil rights and duties

To carry out the assigned task with full sense of responsibility

To be the role model in home, family and society

I study in Nepal Darshan Secondary School. Our school's annual function or
anniversary is near. Students from different parts of the country have come to study
at this school. Students come from different geographical regions, castes, ethnici-
ties, religions and hobbies. Students who have come from far districts can stay in
the hostel at the school. There is also a provision for residence and study for differ-
ently abled students. The local residents have helped the school in different ways.

Today is Friday. Our teacher is going to conduct a new elocution program in grade
seven. Two teams will be selected; there will be two boys and two girls in each team.
The topic for speech competitions is: "Civil Rights and Its Practice"

The judges for the debate will consist of a male and female teacher. Each student
is given five minutes to deliver his/her speech, Himlal is assigned as a timekeeper.
The program is going to be held informally; Phurba Sherpa, Anita Upadhyay, Sohan
Chaudhari and Kushum Khatun are ready to speak in the program.

Phurba: Respected principal, teachers, and dear friends! Today, I am going to deliver
my speech on "Civil Rights and its Practice". The word "Civil" is used only for humans.
The word civil means a well-civilized, good and responsible person. Every individual
has different rights; they get those rights from the nations or other organizations. A
person can be happy in his/her life by practicing these rights. People have to practice
their rights appropriately in right places. While practicing our rights, we should not
disturb others. Some people misuse their rights. If we don't have wisdom, conscience
and patience, we may misuse our rights. A right is a tool to make an individual more
responsible, it helps people to work for their benefits and the welfare of others.

Instructional suggestions

Ask each student to tell about any one quality of a good citizen turn by turn. Allocate
two minutes for each.

Conduct a classroom discussion regarding the duties to be accomplished by students
and give feedback.

30 Moral Education -7

Therefore, in my opinion, rights make people independent and prevent them from
bad moral decision. So, I think it has to be practised in a proper way.

Anita: Respected principal, teachers and dear friends! I am also going to deliver my
speech on "Civil Rights and Its Practice”. Everyone should get chance to live peacefully
in a society, no matter which class or profession they belong to, embarking change
can help people enjoy their freedom. People must feel comfortable in their work

environment, these are some parts of civil rights. Access and opportunity to reach

the different levels of the nation and other agencies according to their capacity also
comes under civil rights. But, we must accomplish our duties and responsibilities in
proper way to enjoy our rights. Our duty is to cultivate crops on the land and our
right is to harvest them in the house. We cannot harvest anything until and unless
we cultivate. Therefore, we have to do our duties before we claim our rights. To
take a very simple example, if we study properly which is our duty, we can claim for
our right to education. If we are not serious in our study, we do not pay attention to
our teacher, write whatever we like on the walls of our school and the blackboard,
make our surroundings dirty, dominate disable friends, mock at them, trouble them
then we cannot consider ourselves to have the right to education. We must be alert
about our duty. Even other animals like elephant, horse, yak, camel, donkey etc.,
also carry out their duties by carrying load on their back. For that, their masters

Moral Education -7 31

provide them something to eat. If we just claim for our rights without fulfilling our
duties then how will people view us? Casting vote, paying tax, abide by the law etc.
are our duties, we have to do all these things properly. Therefore, I declared 'first
let's carry out our duties and then claim our rights'. Let's practice our duties and
rights in a balanced way.

Sohan: Respected principal, teachers, and dear friends! Civil rights are those rights
which are guaranteed by the nation to its people; wherever they are living regard-
ing their basic needs namely- food, clothes, shelter, health services and facilities.
Rights make people strong. However, those who do not fulfill their duties but just
claim for their rights are not considered good citizens and their names will not be
remembered for long. Gautam Buddha fulfilled his duty by enlightening people
through penance. Similarly, Mahabir taught kindness and non-violence selflessly by
not claiming any rights. Our holy scriptures also have mentioned many instances
about the great saint and Yogis who worked hard to accomplish their duties. Even
the Holy Scripture the Geeta has suggested doing good work (karma) rather than
seeking rights. Therefore, rights are only important after performing the duties.
These rights can be utilized properly only by carrying them out responsibly.

Kusum: Respected principal, teachers, and dear friends, we are Nepali, we live in
Nepal. Our rights will be considered to be operative only if we could be good. We can
be good citizen only through good works and behaviuors. So, we should be labori-
ous and persevererance. Patience and devotion to work brings peace in a society.
There are different types of rights: child rights, women rights, rights of the differently
able people, the human rights, etc. These rights create equal opportunities to all
of the community members. People are not being able to utilize all types of rights
even today. However, rights sought without awareness have no significance. What
will happen if one seeks right to use weapons but does not think for maintaining
security? One who performs his/her duty and seeks for rights can be a role model.
One who is a success in both can only be a good citizen. Completion of duty makes
us moral and practice of rights makes us able. Everyone wants to be moral and
strong. Therefore, people consider duties and rights as the two sides of a coin. As
the two sides make a coin meaningful, rights and duties are equally important to
make a good citizen.

Teacher: All of you spoke well. We should have both rights and responsibilities
in our life. This is the essence of what you all spoke, isn't it? (The teacher writes
something on the board)

32 Moral Education -7

All students: Yes. You are right.

Teacher: Thank you all for your response. The result of today's programme will be
announced in our school's anniversary. Please be present on that day.

All students: Ok, teacher.

Summary:

All the rights acquired and utilized by the people are called civil rights. These are
known as democratic behaviors. We have to perform our duties to acquire our
rights. One who performs his/her duty properly is praised in the society. Everyone
strives to be good. For this, one must do something good or one must carry out
his/her duty. Only the person who performs his/her duty and utilizes his/her rights
effectively can be a good citizen. We must be a good role model.

Tshiring's house is in Khumbu, a remote hilly village. He has come to visit town with
his parents in his winter vacation. He travels by bus. He reads some information
written besides his seats:

Seats reserved for women Seats reserved for disables Seats reserved for senior citizens

Tshiring observes the activities of the passengers.

On the next day, he goes to hospital with his parents. They have gone to hospital
since his father needs his health check up. He reads different things on the walls
of the hospital;

Silence Please Silent Please don't make a noise

Tshiring silently walks with his father.

One day, Tshiring's father takes him to an office during their stay in town. Tshiring
was amazed to see the office building. He had not seen any building like this – tall
and beautiful before. They went towards a room to meet his father's friend. Outside
of the room, there was something written beautifully on the wall.

Please put your shoes off No Smoking

Tshiring takes off his shoes and both of them get inside. Tshiring's father tells the
problems of his village to his friend. Tshiring hears them talking. After their talk is
over, they go to visit different places.
Some of the senior boys of Tshiring's village have moved to different schools in town
for their higher studies. Tshiring's father takes him there too. Tshiring visits to the
library of that school. He finds the following signboard on the wall of the library:

Please do not disturb others' study by making noise

Tshiring looks around the school after coming out of the library. There are some
colourful drums in each four corners. Tshiring reads what was written there:

Please wait for your turn to worship

Tshiring’s grandmother has been staying in an old age home. Tshiring's father takes
his son there too. There are many people of old age. Tshiring reads the information
written at the top of main door:

Respect your parents as God

After traveling many places of the town Tshiring gets on the bus to return to his vil-
lage. He is carrying a small bag. He reads information at the inner top of the door:

Please take care of your goods/luggage yourself

Duty:
Muna had gone in an educational tour in her holidays. She was travelling in bus.
One of the passengers sitting in front of her seat gets off the bus. While get-
ting off, he drops some money. Muna notices a man picking up that money and
keeping in his pocket. She stood quiet for a while thinking that the man would
return the money. Nobody in the bus saw this incident. The passenger who had
dropped money hurriedly comes back to his seat. He talks about his lost money.
He asked the passengers who were sitting nearby but nobody told that they had
found. They had some discussion. There was a good uproar in the bus. The man
who had lost his money decides to take everyone to the police and investigate.
There is an uproar and debate. One of the senior members in the bus requests
to return the money without any hesitation whoever has found. He also says
that if we have to go to the police it will be more troublesome. After hearing the
old man, Muna tells about the man who had taken and hid the money. Initially,
the man scolds her but he returns the money after she told everything. All the
passengers become happy and thanked Muna. But the man who gets his money
back wants to give some amount to her but she denies it saying that it is her duty.
Everybody again thanks her.

Dear daughter Salina,

Sweet love and blessings!

I am fine here. I hope you all are fine there too. I got your letter yesterday. I came
to know many things from your letter. I am very happy to know that you have done
well in your study. However, I want to suggest you something regarding some queries
you have written in your letter. If you follow these suggestions, you can become a
good student now and will be a good citizen in the future.

In your letter, you had mentioned about a dispute among the villagers in minor is-
sues. In fact, it is human being who creates this type of problem in society. Nobody
else creates this type of situation. If we follow the social rules and norms, all the
disputes among the members will be ended. It is a matter of shame that people
are arguing in the name of their turn to fill water in tap. It was created as a result
of disobedience of social rules and norms. If we make a rule of first come first serve
system, there will be no dispute at all. We have to follow the societal rules along
with the national laws and regulations.

Instructional Suggestions:

Ask your students about what they do at home next to reading and writing. Let them
think for few minutes. After three minutes, ask each of them to tell their works.

Ask them to tell a work of greatest responsibility among the works they have done so far
and conduct a discussion class about the benefits of that work.

Moral Education -7 41

There is own rule, discipline and tradition in every society. Those who do not fol-
low those systems become unsocial. We have to wait for our turn while doing our
work. We have to show equal respect and cooperation among all the members of
the society. We have to serve and safeguard the senior citizen, disable and weak
people. We should not do anything that harms others. These are some of the social
norms. There is no need to write these things in national laws. If we follow these,
it will benefit an individual, society, and the nation. Love produces peace and hate
leads to violence. You have to be careful about these things from right now. Share
these things in your family, neighbors and others. Behave accordingly in your school.
Only being disciplined and studying at school is not sufficient, following social rules
and norms is also comes under discipline. We can be a disciplined personality by
controlling ourselves and balancing in our actions.

You have also mentioned about the discrimination that took place in the village.

It is not good to practice discrimination. We should not discriminate anybody on
any ground. All people are equal. Their characteristics and needs are equal. In this
context, who should discriminate each other? Look at our body; we equally love
our two eyes, two ears, two hands, two legs. We do not discriminate any of these
parts; therefore, our body is working properly.
All the people are the parts of our society. How would a society run if we discriminate
each other? We need all types of people in our society. If we discriminate them they
would not help us. We should not discriminate and we have to stop others from
doing any kind of discrimination. It is said that in ancient times the learned people
used to respect insects to gods and goddess equally. They also used to teach others

42 Moral Education -7

to do so. Dear daughter, why don't we learn lesson from them and be good? If we,
modern people, practice discrimination, what the future generation would tell us?

You are still young. Therefore, you may think that your duty is to read and write
only. You may also feel that all these works are of seniors. If you are thinking like
this it is not good. In the society everybody has his/her responsibility. Only the dif-
ference is that juniors have fewer responsibilities whereas seniors have more. All
of us have to accomplish our responsibilities. If we make a habit of accomplishing
out duties from the very childhood, we develop the same habit even after we are
grown up. We can also learn this lesson from the nature. If a small plant cannot
bear its responsibility how can it serve others after being a big tree?

You have to realize that there are different types of responsibilities. Among them,
we common people have to carry out two types of responsibilities: individual and
social. You have to carry out responsibilities as per your age and capacity. Your
responsibilities are in school as well as in home. To be good in study, to participate
in extra-curricular activities, cleaning the school premises as well as classrooms, to
be obedient to the teachers and respect them, be cooperative to friends etc. come
under the responsibilities at school. Helping each other in study and other matters
are also a responsibilities.

You have to help your family members. You have to obey your seniors. You have to
help the juniors in their study. You have to take care of your personal cleanliness.
You have to do your work on time. The society runs in mutual cooperation. You also
have to help the senior citizen, disables, handicapped and other needy helpless
people. Some people cannot read and write, you have to help them. There is a say-
ing that if an educated person does not share his/her knowledge it is useless. And
no one wants to make the knowledge useless. We have to be ready all the time for
the protection and preservation of public properties. There are different types of
people. One who thinks that I am for me, my family, my society, and my nation he/
she is considered to be the best person. This type of person can maintain harmony
and unity in family as well as in the society.

The letter has become too long. You follow all these things and share it with your
family, neighborhood, and school too. If everyone follows these norms there will
be no dispute in our society. Dhankuta, where I am living is far from Doti, Dipayal,
but I am living perfectly here. We work in our office with the feeling that we all are
Nepali. I will try to come home in Gaura festival. Please convey my sweet memory
to other members of the family and neighbours. Be good, do the work you can and
show to the society being good.

There is a house of sister Ujeli in the middle of Bastari village. She has got two
daughters named Manchali and Chanchali. They have one brother also. His name
is Manjeet. Manchali is twelve years old, Chanchali is at ten and Manjeet is of 8
years. Till last year, they used to go to school together. One day, Chanchali fell
down and got injured while running to home from the school. She got some
problem in her leg. She could not walk properly. Sister Ujeli stopped sending her
to school as she could not walk properly. Though Chanchali said she could walk,
she could go to school; her mother did not hear her. Chanchali's study was termi-
nated in the mid-session. Nandamaya, one of the neighbouring girls also studies in
grade nine in the same school. Everyone in the village says that her study is quite
good. She always stands first in her class and receives prizes. She always goes to
school through the courtyard of Sister Ujeli. Chanchali shows her interest to go to
school by calling Nandamaya. She says "Hey Nandamaya ! I want to go to school".
Nandamaya knows that sister Ujeli is not sending Chanchali to school. However,
she ignores Chanchali. The villagers of Banstari praise Nandamaya's study. Last
day, brother Sherdhwoj praised her study with her parents. Nandamaya's parents
also accepted his praise and said 'we are also happy by knowing her study'. But
today, Nandamaya's mother asked about the time and course of her medicine but
Nandamaya did not help her, instead she went to play. Only having good study is
not enough, We have to implement it into our practice, don't we?

Different programs are being organized in school on the ocassion of 'Education Day'.
The major programs are Public Speech, Satsang (good company), etc. The School
Management Committee has appealled to all the students, parents, guardians,
and villagers to attend the program. A senior educationist of the village has been
invited for the speech. He delivers his speech as:

Respected brothers and sisters,

Dear students and participants!

Firstly, I am very much indebted to you all for providing me this opportunity to
speak on the auspicious occasion of 'Education Day'.

Many of you know the need and importance of education. We have become
civilized social being only because of education. Education is the light for our
future and the foundation of the development of our nation. Education makes
people wise and decent.

As you all know, at present we need to develop a good morality and practice in
our society. We have to develop our morality for the common benefits of others.
We have to develop a habit of listening to others' ideas and putting own ideas
independently. Some people have the habit of not listening to others and imposing
their own ideas. This is not a good habit. We should instead develop a habit of
respecting each other’s feelings and thoughts. If each one of us makes ourselves

Instructional suggestions

Discuss in pairs about the good qualities of students. Ask students to talk to each other about
whether they feel they deserve these qualities or not.

Ask the students to talk about democratic practice and then discuss and clarify which things are
inadequate.

Ask them to name any social evils they have seen in their societies and also tell them to present in
the class by making a list of measures to control such evils.

good, it leads to social development of our characters. The act of respecting and
recognizing everyone's thoughts, feelings, opinions and promoting good works is,
in fact, a democratic practice. From such practices, we can develop a good culture
in our society.
I would specially like to focus on the students that We should take our education,
skill, culture, and tradition together. There are various branches of education and
the number of educated people in the world is also increasing. However, people
say that our typical cultural values are somehow found weak at present. You may
go to different countries in the future for your higher studies. You may get higher/
good education. Nonetheless, if you fail to preserve your originality that education
cannot be fruitful. Can a tree with dry roots provide sweet fruit?
Our level of ethics/morality is reflected in our way of talking, behavior, and life
style. Good ethics make a person good. This type of person can develop a good
culture in a society. In fact, this type of society is a real human society. We must
be serious about this fact. The education which was imparted in the past used

to give more emphasis in practice and culture. It put its concern in discipline and
morality. However, the present day education system is different. It has brought
some change in our behaviors and activities. There is no change in human body
but there are a lot of changes in their activities. I believe that the moral teachings
of our traditional education system should be continued. Let's walk together, let's
eat together, let's work together, let's share each other's feelings and join hands
for good work. These norms are really useful means of democratic practices.
As we have physical body and we suffer from different types of diseases, it is
obvious that in society different types of problems and bad activities may occur.
We are the creator of a good society and equally the creator of bad society too.
To be involved in drug addiction, fighting, having discrimination on the ground of

48 Moral Education -7

caste etc. are social evils. We must be active to eradicate these evils. No one is
good or bad by birth. It is all the influence of our family, society and others. We
all must actively participate to eradicate the social evils. We can make a beautiful
future by good works. We can make a good society if we become determined from
our school age. I hope, students will be serious in this matter. Finally, I would like
to thank all for having patience and listening to me for a long time.

Summary:

Everyone in the society has their own responsibility. The educated people have
even more responsibility. There is a need to practice and develop good manner
among the people. Behaviours which are acceptable for all are democratic. This
is the principle of democracy. A human can be a completed with the combination
of education, culture and practices. Education inspired by the originality of our
cultural practices is the best education. There is always the possibility of evil in a
society. All the people should equally be active to eradicate these evils. Specially,
the educated group should be more active. Then, we can develop a good society
and a good culture.
