Lesson 2 Moral Practice

Expected Behaviours:
To maintain social courtesy
To be grateful of kind people and things
To be careful on the conversation of nature showing attachment on it.
To work for the welfare of the motherland.

Long long ago, students and teachers were talking about academy concern in a
school. The teachers were asking questions and the students were answering
them. In this continuation, one day, a teacher asked the question, "How do you
become happy?"

‘When a hungry man gets bellyful of food’,then he or she becomes happy, some
replied. Others said ‘when a poor gets enough wealth’. Some said when the
teachers take us to visit beautiful places. Some added ‘when an unsuccessful person
becomes successful’. Some of the students were not interested in their studies.
They said, "Sir, we become happy when we leave the school. After listening to all
of the answers, Sulekha said, "A cuckoo becomes happy when the spring comes,
a peacock becomes happy when summer comes, a rascal becomes happy when
others are misfortunate and a gentleman becomes happy when all creatures are
well. Parents become happy when their children progress. Teachers become happy
when others show good behaviour and respect." The teacher became very happy
to listen to this answer and thanked her.

Good manners are precious jwellery to society. Greetings, gratefulness and
thankfulness are good manners. Good manners bring people closer. They make
the relationship between people permanent and strong. Social good manners can
be followed free of cost and labour. Its practice begins from the family. It can

Instructional Suggetions:

be practiced further with neighbors. There can be different people with various
interests, classes, thoughts, cultures and faiths in our neighbourhood. Though
their behaviours can be different, we should be grateful to each other and show
our greatefulness. According to the situation, we can show courtesy by smiling
at each other. It is said that everybody in the world can understand the language
of a smile. Courtesy is needed to make all people happy, to maintain sincere
relationships and to exchange co-operation. This indicates the moral heights and
practise of an individual.
Any individual has been taking support from others. His/her life would become
difficult without this help and support. Therefore, we should express our
gratefulness to those who help us in need. In some scriptures, it is said that those
who do not care about helpful peoples are like criminals. It shows the importance
of the courtesy.
There are benefits of greetings and greatfulness. According to the old books of
moral education, there are four benefits. They are: (a) living longer, (b) becoming
knowledgeable, (c) becoming famous, (d) becoming powerful. Nobody exists that
does not want these benefits.

Earth and vegetation also support us. People do everything in the earth. People dig
it, plough it, grow food to eat but also they make it dirty. Everything is tolerated by
the earth. A man is like a small child and the earth is like a mother. So, the earth is
called mother. National Poet (Rastrakabi) Madhav Prasad Ghimire says in his poem
like this:
I am your son, you the mother earth,
Unbroken relationship is of land and heart.
We human being should be grateful to the earth. Motherland is equal to mother.

52 Moral Education -7

There is the saying, "Mother and motherland are greater than heaven." We should
be grateful to them. We are not able to repay our appreciation of our mother,
motherland and the earth even if we had millions of years to adjust in. If we cannot
show this appreciation, we can be grateful by not making the world dirty. Natural
vegetation is our good friend. They do not take anything from us but they give us
a lot. They give us fruits, medicinal herbs, shade and coolness. They help to make
our environment clean. They purify the oxygen which we breathe to live. So we
should be grateful to vegetation.

Human beings are taking many benefits from the sea, the rivers, the mountains,
the sun, the moon and the stars. The existence of human beings and other
creatures is not possible without them in this world. We should also be greatful
to them. Both human beings and nature should co-operate with each other for
living and existence. A man can walk on the path of morality by following the
courtesy in family, neighbourhood and school. Morality cannot be enhanced by
any medicine. It is developed from the early age of a child and is started through
family, neighbourhood etc. Courtesy can be shown being thankful and grateful to
those who help us. Nature is a silent teacher for us. We can take blessings from
nature by expressing appreciation and being thankful for it.

Summary

The necessary thing in our society is to follow courtesy. We can follow courtesy
showing gratefulness and thankfulness towards each other. From this, human
relationships become strong and permanent. Human beings can extend help
and co-operation. She/he is living in co-operation within society. We should be
grateful for such support and co-operation. A man takes various benefits from
the nature. The existence of human beings is not possible without the support
of the nature and the earth. It is the moral duty of human beings to be grateful
and thankful to nature.

Let's have information of a village:

Dovantar is a very beautiful village. Different people live in Dovantar. They have
separate religious, educational, social and cultural beliefs. Weak, disabled and
differently able people are also in this village. The occupations of these people are
also different.

Many people visit Dovantar to enjoy the natural beauty and learn about the social
perspectives. It is beautiful as well as peaceful village. Old values and traditions are
also prevailed in the village, along with new practices. The people are wise as well.

People from different castes and religious groups live together in Dovantar. They
help each other and like to work collectively. They hold discussions before they
start any work. They share each other's views and involve the person having
opposing views together in different activities. They help each other on various
occasions like festivals, celebrations and fairs irrespective of their religions, values
and culture. They follow the rules and regulations and involve themselves in various
development work. They have judicious distribution of opportunities. They take a
collective responsibility to help the senior citizens, the weak, the disabled and the
marginalized group of people.

They carefully listen to the suggestions given by respected persons of the village.
They make decisions collectively after discussing to all. They greet each other in
meetings according to their customs. If anybody does anti-social activity, they try
to convince him/her. In case of further misconduct, they handover such people
to the concerned legal authority for punishment. They collectively help them to
improve such behaviours.

Moral Education -7 57

They also involve women and children in decision making process which can reflect
their views, emotions and suggestions. They organize cultural programmes at least
once a month, turn by turn, for cultural development of all castes, classes and sects.
They do not ignore or insult weak, disable persons and marginalized groups. Instead,
they identify the abilities and create the environment and opportunities for them
to be self-reliant. Therefore, many people from different places and countries come
here to study the democratic culture and behaviours in the village. Meanwhile, a
team from Kailali has made the following conclusion by studying the village:
The main characteristics of Dovantar are: to live together, work collectively and
have discussions with each other. All views are respected here. All people work
following the rules and regulations. All are equally treated in this village. They
reach on conclusion with collective discussion. If anybody does illegal activities,
they become unanimous for the punishment according to the degree of offence.
As a result, the feeling of living together with sharing and caring each other has
become strong in the village.

Summary
Democratic culture is developed in Dovantar. Because of this, all people are living
together with mutual co-operation in this village. Democratic culture means to
promote human values and to balance between rights and duties. Similarly,
it includes personal, social and national peace, a feeling of brotherhood and
a universal relationship among people. For this, we should participate and
encourage all to participate in different activities. Democratic behaviour helps in
building character and promoting social tolerance and collective lifestyle.
Democratic culture should be practised by individuals, communities and society
in practical life for the welfare of all people. There is equal role of an individual,
community and society to develop such culture. Nepalese society has a lot of
diversities. So, the democratic culture and system become strong and successful
only through respecting such diversities.

Lesson 1 I Become Good

Expected Behaviours:

To speak and act courteously

To be patient, sober and tolerant

To follow good company

To perform civilized behaviour

To keep balance between knowledge and practice

(Basanta did not want to have a meal this evening. His mind is occupied with the
event which had occurred that afternoon in his school. He has felt that he has
done a great mistake against other's minor errors. His mind has filled with various
thoughts at this late night.)

(Looking at the wall clock) Oh! It's nearly ten o'clock. Why am I not able to sleep?
Even I have an headache. How nice was the sleeping yesterday and the day before.
Today, I can’t sleep, it may be due to anxiety and tension. Last year, our moral science
teacher, Junu, had said – dead ones are burnt in funeral pyre and living ones are in
anxiety. Now I have felt that those words of my teacher are true when I faced them.

I'm not an indisciplined and immoral student in the class. All teachers love me.
They take me as a disciplined and studious student. The head teacher had given
me a pen as a prize for securing highest marks in Mathematics in the last terminal
examination. Of course, today I made a mistake breaking the discipline. Otherwise,
why did they dismiss me for two days from the school? I should not have slapped
my friend when he had thrown my notebook on the ground. I slapped my friend
and was punished by the school. My mistake seemed to be bigger than his.

If I had told the incident to the head teacher, I wouldn't have been blamed. I myself
attacked him. How did I do that?

Hira sir, who wanted to apart us might have taken me a bad boy. I talked irritably to
him, "Don't come and show your affection, go to teach your class." Oh! I didn't have
to treat my teacher like this. Where had I lost my courtesy in that time? I have read

Instructional Suggestions:

Ask the students about the things that fall under the discipline of a student. List
them in the blackboard and conduct a discussion with them.

Tell them any one moral story where a disciplined person got happiness and an
undisciplined got trouble and make student discuss on its moral.

62 Moral Education -7

in a book – common sense of a man destroys when calamity occurs. I being a good
and disciplined student, was resticated for two days from the school. My friends
teased me. I got scolded in home. I missed my classes for two days. What can be
the bigger misfortune for me than that? Last year, my maternal uncle had shown me
the prize with certificate that he had got. On the top of the certificate, a sentence
was written in Sanskrit– "Bidhya Dadati Binayam (Education gives courtesy)". When
I asked the meaning of the sentence, he said – "Courtesy can be acquired from edu-
cation." Education is eye and courtesy is hand. I felt happy when I had heard this.
But how did I forget this? I acquired education but didn't show courtesy. What had
I learnt then? Learning means to apply in practical life too. (He takes another side.)

How do I spend these two days in home? I have no interest to study and do home-
work. What type of man am I who can't tolerate such a minor thing? The meaning of
intolerance of injustice is not to do quarrel. Why don't I understand it? Tolerance is
the highest quality of a man. Anil uncle had said a story of an elephant, Dhirkumar.

Once Dhirkumar was sunbathing after he had taken a bath in a pond. Some fawns
came and started to play on its back. The back of the elephant became dirty. But
the elephant didn't do anything and remained silent. The fawns even threw urine
and stool on it. Even after that, it didn't react. An animal can tolerate other's child
in such a way but I'm a human being. What kind of human being am I, If I can't

Moral Education -7 63

tolerate the misconduct of his own friend, Where is patience in me? I couldn't learn
anything from what I have studied, listened and seen. So, I am suffering from the
result of that.
There are many reasons to make a man good or bad. I have become bad today. This
is the result of my own behaviours. If I hadn't slapped my classmate, I wouldn't have
dismissed from the school. And if I hadn't dismissed from the school, I wouldn't
have felt storm myself. I could sleep in time. I will have gone school the next day
and studied together with friends. I have read biographies of Mahatma Gandhi and
Gautam Buddha. But why didn't I remember those things?
A courteous person never gets trouble anywhere. There is a close relationship
between fairness of heart and courtesy. I have not only punished but also learnt
something. Now and onward, I never leave courtesy. I don't lose temper in minor
things. I tolerate them with patience. I only take good habit and behaviour. I show
courtesy to all. I never forget good things and apply them in practical life. This is
discipline and only a way for my betterment. Whatever, the today was past. This
was my examination. From tomorrow, I forget all bad things and remember good
things only and apply them in practice. (Looking the watch again) Oh! It's eleven.
Now I must sleep.

Summary
A man can be anxious due to various reasons. Among them, one is when he/she
breaks discipline. A man who is disciplined doesn't suffer from anxiety. Courtesy,
tolerance and patience are threads to keep a man in discipline. Company also
affects a man. Bad company leads a man to downfall and good one to progress.
Decision making capacity is needed for that. A man becomes mature from experi-
ences of life and knowledge from books. It is necessary to apply those experiences
and knowledge in practical life.

groups have participated on it. Among them two of the groups Mechi and Mahakali
who came to the final positions are going to compete. After the direction of the
host of the programme, the two groups start to sing:

Instructional Suggestions:

turns with a rhythmic voice.
Tell any story, poem or song that give importance to discipline and let students
discuss about it.

Let us get the answer, of these questions that we say
Mechi: Go ahead! We will try to give the answer if we know,
In case we don't, we will apologize and bow.
Mahakali: Father, mother, Guru and Gurumas, relatives and friends,
Why should all the people prioritize the discipline?

Or will require to our entire life or not?
Mechi: Let us clean our heart by thinking positive,
It drives our life making us productive.
Mahakali: Anyone can get lots of gains, we know how?
Can we ask some other questions right now?
Mechi: You can ask any without feeling shame,
Don't take us as special, we are the same.
Mahakali: Let me know what a society gains from discipline ?
Kindly say all this to us in short

68 Moral Education -7

Mechi: It helps to build peace and cooperation,

all round development with unity and civilization

Mahakali: As we think it also helps the country to grow,

Let me know something about it that you have known.

Mechi: Discipline helps the country for its fame,

What did we know if we fail to grow the name?

Mahakali: Thanks for your efforts to make us known the gains,

Let's shake our hands now, may we meet again and again.

Mechi: We may not sing this song again, among the good friends,

Follow the discipline; you wouldn’t get the pains.

Summary

Discipline is not defeatism rather it is the meaning of the freedom. Discipline is
a key foundation for all round development of a person. It always encourages
establishing self-confidence which is a must for success. It helps to create a
respectable position in a society in the entire life. Discipline creates friendship,
unity, brotherhood etc. which finally leads to the development of the society.
Both name and fame of the country can be increased among the international

them saying blind." It doesn't suit for a disciplined student or an individual.
We should call them visually impaired persons. Similarly, hearing impaired
for deaf, physically impaired for disable and intellectually impaired for
mentally retarded people. This influenced Raman to a great extent. He
thanked Ramila and promised to follow her suggestion.
