St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 03 Dear Year 8 Students of 2022 What a pleasure it has been to have known you this year, even if it has been such a short time for me. You are certainly a special group of outstanding Year 8s. I have been so impressed by the way you have persevered through the first half of 2022, dealing with the struggles of the pandemic and how it affected our school. You rose above it, and didn’t let the virus keep you away from school for longer than necessary or distract you from your learning. I’m sure you can look back on your years at St Heliers School and be proud of your achievements, and see how you have grown to be independent and confident young people. You are now ready to take on the challenges of your teenage years as you head off to secondary school. I did speak to you all at the very beginning of the year that I wanted this final year at St Heliers School for you to be fantastic, filled with the sorts of activities that Year 8 student are normally able to take part in. Although this started slowly due to Covid-19, I think you have all made the most of the opportunities provided; leadership opportunities, Year 8 Camp, Aims, Eastern Bays sports competitions, running club, choir, kapa haka, dancing, Year 8 show and the graduation. Keep taking the opportunities and challenges that present themselves to you next year. I know that all the amazing teachers you have had at school are so proud of the way you have progresses and succeeded with your learning and maturity. I know Principal’s Message that your parents are also proud of you. I am sure they will reflect on the important part they have played as a parent or mentor to their growing adolescent. My message to you all is to do something that matters, something that makes a difference in the lives of others, no matter how small or how big that may be. Finally congratulations to all of you. Head off to high school as the polite, respectful, inquisitive, and educated young people that you are. I look forward to hearing about all the great things you will achieve. ‘Find something you love to do, and learn how to do it so well that you can make a living doing it.’ Mr Valvoi Principal St Heliers School St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 3 12/5/2022 10:52:25 AM

04 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 At the beginning of 2022 we each had to nominate ourselves for a chance at this leadership position. After going through a selection process, a team of 14 Student Leaders were chosen. After we fumbled through the school tradition of reading out the vows, we were able to take the opportunity of different roles of responsibility. We were now role models - leaders of our school community. After being congratulated by our fellow classmates with high fives and hugs we took our first steps into the world of a Student Leader. At weekly meetings we organised fun mufti days, assemblies, duties and other events. We became the voice for our peers and the things they want to improve, and became advocates for our school’s welfare. Not only do we take on the roles, we take them with pride. As a Student Leader our priority is to improve the school environment and our connections with the students. We are given a sense of responsibility through numerous assignments and commitments. By doing morning tea duty we are able to get to know other children and get the perspective of different age groups. This can also help us discover more ideas and ways we can improve our school community. Hosting the assemblies is great for National Young Leaders Day By Chad, Finn and Seb In May the student leaders went to NYLD (National Young Leaders Day) where five people talked to thousands of young leaders all around New Zealand about their journey to becoming an entrepreneur, and committing to their dreams. This year's theme for NYLD was resilience. The speakers growing our confidence in public speaking and being comfortable in front of a crowd. It also gives the school an opportunity to learn more about us as student leaders. We love seeing everyone dress up and feel comfortable in their own clothes on mufti days. As student leaders we are in charge of organising mufti days and giving prizes on the day. Sometimes being a student leader can create extra pressure, but it all pays off in the end when our achievements are evident. - William Pike, Georgia Lines, Georgia Latu, Sam Johnson and Dave Letele - spoke about their stories and how they overcame hardships by being resilient. The speakers gave all the young leaders their tips and advice to become successful and thriving adults, and then the students could ask interesting questions on a personal level with these role models. These included surrounding yourself with good people and never giving up. The hosts of NYLD entertained the young leaders in between speeches with fun games, audience involvement and a dance cam. At the morning tea and lunch breaks, students could buy an NYLD badge to remember the performance, and had a chance to meet the speakers. During the speeches every young leader was given a booklet to write down some notes they wanted to remember. They included some advice from the speakers. At the end, a surprise performance by Georgia Lines had everyone out of their seats singing Drivers License. Overall, NYLD was a great experience for young people all across New Zealand, allowing them to see resilience firsthand. St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 05 Being a house captain carries a lot of responsibilities. It has helped us develop our social and organisational abilities. We organise sports events as leaders, and make them enjoyable for everyone. Having badges to designate our houses was a fantastic idea that we had this year to leave behind as our legacy. By wearing them, kids can demonstrate dedication for their house. This idea broadened our portrayal of our house. We've done a lot over the year, including organising cross country, making house badges for students from year 5-8 that they can purchase, and organising a fun sports day to get students involved with their houses and instil a sense of house pride. We all selected our house captain partner after deciding on our house chant and mascots. We house captains are overjoyed to have been given the opportunity to work as a team and be involved with the school this year. to repay the school for all the times it has helped us HOUSES St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 5 12/5/2022 10:52:34 AM

06 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Year 8 was lucky enough to go to Okahu bay for a day of new learning opportunities - Waterwise. We frolicked in the beautiful sun and breathed in the damp salty smell of the ocean, while also embarking on both water and land adventures. Arriving at Okahu Bay, we inhaled the calm smell of the salt-ridden waves. Throughout the day, each class rotated between entertaining adventures on the kayaks and Optis, and being out on the beach encountering many eccentric washed-up objects, which were collected for a scavenger hunt. Some of us found certain items difficult to find, but showed great sportsmanship and teamwork helping each other to acquire all the articles so they could all build sandcastles, or in some cases, spend a small fraction of their time digging holes in the hope of finding lost relics or buried treasure, or for instant pleasure. The exciting playground, located in the Ngati Whatua traditional lands, was also an enjoyable activity, where there were several exhilarating pieces of equipment to play on, from ziplines to the swings. At Fergs Kayaks were first split into groups, one would kayak first, and the other would conquer the Optis. Lacing on the highly important lifejackets, the instructor would demonstrate the gliding technique used in kayaking, and we would lumber over to the kayak of our choice when we passed the unofficial gliding test. With the encouragement of the helpful instructors and parents, we slid onto the kayaks and pushed off into the vast sea, racing towards the other end. Unfortunately, we encountered some challenges while doing so, such as accidentally or even on purpose tumbling off the kayak before struggling to get back on. Others also encountered many dangers known as the boom in the Opti, which would swing around suddenly giving you the risk of being whipped in the head. Fortunately nobody was severely harmed. The instructors had explained the directions of how to operate the Opti sailboat, the most favourable one being one with cushions on both sides and a friendly star on the sail boasting its superiority. Waterwise was a truly educational experience that will be engraved in the minds of all of us. by Kate and Yasmin St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 6 12/5/2022 10:52:39 AM

08 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Daytime Activities By Elsie The activities at Camp Adair helped us build our team working and confidence skills by challenging us to a series of activities led by instructors. One of the highlights was the confidence course. Diving over and under poles, through muddy water, swinging on ropes and army crawling to the best of our abilities. Everyone had the best time despite the wet, cold and smelly mud. We all had personal goals we set out to achieve, whether that was climbing to the top of the zip line pole, overcoming our fear of heights or walking along and back the thin wire of multi vine. At Camp Adair there was something for everyone. One of the scariest activities would have to have been the abseiling. Lending backwards and lowering yourself down a wall was terrifying. After the activity it felt like you had conquered the world. The trapeze was another testing activity especially if you did not like heights. After jumping from pole to pole the joy that you had survived, when your feet connected with each pole, was so great! Luckily for us not all activities were so nerve racking. Rock climbing was a fun activity the whole group enjoyed (including our parent helper). To get us ready to climb the wall our instructor played games with us to prepare and focus us on aiming for the top. Not all the activities were as physical and adrenaline packed. For instance orienteering, which required us to work as a team to locate singular letters hidden around the campsite. Once all the letters were found the team had to figure out the message when placed in the correct order. This activity needed brain power as well as team work. At the end of the day, feeling happy we had achieved so much, we all headed across the swing bridge to the famous mudslide - an activity that we had all been looking forward to. We lined up along the ridge of the hill and watched as each student was swung onto the slide which sent you slipping and sliding into a murky, ice cold pit of water. The numbing water stole your breath as you landed in the mud. Every student returned home with a very wet, smelly and muddy bag of washing. 10 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Camp Dinners by Nina The dinners at Year 8 camp were amazing. I am a little fussy when it comes to the normal food I eat at home, but for needing to feed 90 or so kids, it was great. The activities/themes were fun and made a great end to the day. On the first night, we thought the pictures of different pasta people were drawn beautifully and Iweloved how they coordinated to each table. It fit perfectly with our dinner, nachos. After dinner a lucky group was able to use the epic dish cleaning facilities and spent half an hour cleaning dishes and having a laugh. The second night's theme was my favourite because of the silence theme. Basically once we all entered the hall nobody was allowed to speak! The only way to communicate was by writing on the lengths of paper across the tables. Many games of naughts and crosses were played. After such a long two days of activities mixed with a little sleep, it was nice and relaxing to eat dinner peacefully. Although towards the end we started to get antsy, desperately needing to speak with someone. Overall it was a really good experience. All meals filled us up and gave us the energy to push ourselves during the day. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 10 12/5/2022 10:53:03 AM

St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 11 Camp Night-time Activities by Samantha Grabbing our flashlights in hand, Year 8 came together in our activity groups ready for a story time and a Burma Trail for the first night at camp. In a one file line, linked by hand, we walked through the dark misty night and were surrounded by nature while walking on a rocky path. Silence was all we could hear as we scouted out the tiny glow worms in the bushes or trees. Luckily we just managed to see them far in the bush bluntly glowing. After our long walk we ended in an altar area surrounded by benches. We sat down to listen to a wonderful story about the night read by all the teachers. Looking up while listening, we could also see the wave of stars and the moon peeping from the trees. It looked magnificent in the night sky. As we walked back in the dark, we held hands so we wouldn't drift and get lost from one another. Then we got to the Burma trail. Holding the tightrope and the person's jumper in front of us, using teamwork we guided each other. If there was a step or slope we had to be extra careful since we were blinded by the darkness surrounding us. On the next night we were prepared to do our chants at the top of our voices! Being led to the campfire area, we found the campfire was lit and warm, instead of being dark. Using sticks found on the ground, we roasted marshmallows. One by one each one of the teams yelled their chant, then sang their songs which were created during our time at camp. These songs were creative and hilarious, making them original and flow well, with clapping or hitting their knees to make a beat. The songs were normally around 15 or 10 seconds long - sweet and short. For a surprise, the parents and then teachers cooked up their own songs which we all joined in on. 12 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 By Rishiaani On the 9th of August, Year 8 classes headed to Churchill Park compete against each other in the cross country race. The girls competed straight away, and the boys soon after. Everyone showed house spirit by wearing an item of their house’s colour. House mascots this year were Smurfs for Kikorangi, Minions for Kowhai, Luigi for Kakariki and Mario for Whero. Even if we were all tired, we made sure to cheer each other on. The top 8 runners in Year 8 were Lucy, Frances, Tia, Ruby, Sonya, Belle, Olivia and Evie, Alvin, Marcel, Aaron, Alfie, Tyler, Seb, Liam and Blake. It is safe to say that the day was a huge success. By Alexander Resilience, Diligence and sportsmanship. These are all traits the St Heliers Baketball Team displayed while playing in the Eastern Zone basketball tournament during Week 3. The skilled basketball players started by playing Sylvia Park in a challenging game 1. Fighting through the size difference, our team emerged victorious by no less than 5 points. Game 2 was against the tough opponent Sacred Heart. Powering through the many injuries St Heliers continued to play their game against the eventual winners. This game still went in the favour of Saccred Heart nonetheless. Lastly the Basketball Team faced another tough opponent - St Thomas’ School. Game 3 was closer than the previous, however our players were tired and worn down. Still St Heliers managed to put up a good fight and not give up. This led to a 2-1 loss to win record for the day. Eatern Zones Basketball 2022 ended by watching the finals Kings vs Sacred. On the ride home one of the cars got ice cream which kickstarted the recovery of their sore muscles. A big thank you Britta Mount for coaching us and managing us on the day. Cross Country 2022 Basketball (Boys) Basketball (Girls) By Evie and Myra The Year 8 girls basketball team participated in the EZ basketball tournament and we were amazing! We worked hard as a team to try and win, while having sportsmanship and fun against the other schools. We ended up in 7th place out of 10 teams. Overall, we were proud and happy that we had participated in this sport and were grateful to all of the Y8 teachers and parents for making this happen. We particularly enjoyed the lollies and Calciyums that Shakti (Sonya’s dad, the team manager for the day) provided for us. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 12 12/5/2022 10:53:13 AM

St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 13 Y8 Girls EZ Footbal Girls By Paige and Olivia All girls at the Year 8 football tournament had a great time and wish we could all do it again next year. The sky was blue, the clouds were gone ... most of the time. At Madills Farm we gathered By Liam On Thursday the 9th of June, the Year 7 and 8 tackle rugby team went to the Pakuranga rugby club to compete in the Eastern Zones tackle rugby tournament. There were 8 different teams competing in our grade which included teams such us Sacred Heart, St Kents, and Glendowie Primary. When we arrived at the facilities we got weighed and then made our way down to our field. After we set up the tarp to put our bags on, we started to warm up with multiple drills and different types of exercises such as lunges, passes, and blowing over the ruck. After we warmed up and got informed on our lineups it was kickoff time against Farm Cove. After we scored a try early on, Farm cove scored 2 late tries to make the final score 5-10 to Farm Cove. After this initial defeat, we had our team talk and got ready for the next game Elim. After Elim got off to a strong start scoring many tries our team had a breakthrough and scored to make the final score 5-17 to Elim. After the loss to Elim the boys got ready for the toughest game of the day, Sacred Heart. When it was kickoff Sacred Heart played really well, Rugby even though the boys had some breakthroughs it wasn't enough to get through Sacred's defense and the final score was 0-35 to Sacred Heart. After the loss, the boys were not excited about what was coming against St Kents. Until kickoff when they didn't show up to the field and it started to rain. Our first win! We departed the field and went up behind the warehouse, packed up, and went back to school finishing 7th out of 8th. But most of all I would like to Thank Mr. Christie and Tim Hornibrook for taking time out of their days to take us to the tournament and training us. around the clubhouse to discuss our game plan and the tactics of how we could win. We won all the games we played except for two, which pumped us up even more. Unfortunately in the last game of the pool we were beaten by one goal, putting us in third place. During one of our games it started to rain but that didn't stop us. We beat the other team 4-2. In the end we came third place out of 8 teams. All of us had come together each Friday morning for training, talking about how our teamwork can lead us to win. We knew exactly when and how to pass to each other (usually without any trouble). Taking turns at positions on the field, everyone got a go at going up front and scoring some goals. As a team we were always insync and listened to everyone's game plan ideas. Our team was very supportive and was always kind to each other (even when we didn't win). We knew that if we worked together and helped each other in a caring way, we would have the courage to get up and try again. At the end of each game we did a chant to congratulate the other team. It was to give thanks to the other team, our own team, the coach, referee and the supporters who joined us on the day. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 13 12/5/2022 10:53:13 AM

14 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Eastern Zone Hockey - Boys Eastern Zone Hockey - Girls By Charlie The Hockey Tournament at Lloyd Elsmore was so enjoyable to watch and play. Everyone had an awesome time and so many people had improved, especially since some had only been playing hockey for a short period of time. The boys participated and worked as a team, nearly heading towards victory each game. Although we didn’t win every match, we still never gave up. The parents were a huge help by driving us boys way over to Pakuranga and we were very thankful. We were all thrilled with the results coming 4th and some of us might consider trying out for hockey now. Thank you teachers and parents for helping us have an amazing experience. By Lucy On Monday the 27th of June, the Year 7 and 8 combined team of girls played in the Eastern Zones hockey tournament at Lloyd Elsmore Hockey Turf. We had an awesome day filled with great teamwork, sportsmanship, and most importantly we played our best throughout the 6 games that we played. Our team had only 3 practices altogether, yet we still managed to score a few goals and place 4th out of 5 teams. Altogether we drew 1 game, won 1 game, and lost the other 4. The final game that we played off for 3rd and 4th against Glendowie School was really close and unfortunately in the last 3 minutes Glendowie scored their goal. This resulted in us placing 4th. Everyone tried their best and wouldn’t make any game easy for the other teams. We also wouldn’t have been able to do as well as we did without Miss Harrison who coached our team and all of the parents who drove and supported us on the day. by Ruby and Izrael The feeling of being in a netball team is great - one of a kind. The SHS teams had a wonderful experience playing with each other as a team. Throughout the whole day each netball team had to cooperate with each other and show a lot of teamwork. At the netball tournament, all day we were able to experience this feeling. All day we worked well with our teammates and had each other's backs. Working in teams was great fun for all of us as it felt we were part of something bigger. We felt as though we were accomplishing lots as we worked through all of our netball games as one - always relying on each other. Feeling happy with ourselves, we also learnt a lot more about others and their perspectives on many things. That is how everybody felt the Today was an exciting but nerve-racking day. The event we had all been waiting for was the year 8 swimming sports at Sacred Heart College. Due to the covid restrictions, this year’s swimming sports was By Albie and Tyler After so long with no inter-school sports, it was great to attend the EZ Football Tournament. Out of twelve teams, the SHS Y8 Boys came fourth - we thought we’d done a pretty good job. The competition was tough, especially after no sport last year (and lots of private schools). In the last 30 seconds of our fourth game, the opposition was up by one and Ted made a long goal and scored for a draw - he saved us (a relieving play because it meant we went Y8 Boys Eastern Zone Football a little bit different. This year it was a competition between the year 8 swimmers who elected to swim. We had a snack, and began our walking journey to the pool with the other competing swimmers. through to the semis). In our second game we won 8-0. Our coaches were very encouraging and supportive. They prioritised us - we had training two days a week for many weeks. We really appreciated all their support. An awesome day was had by all of us. Eastern Zone Netball day of the tournament. The Year 8 teams had a wonderful placement in the tournament. Y8 boys got an impressive 3rd place, Y8 girls A team got 3rd as well and the Y8 girls B team got 4th! The whole of SHS had a great day out at the tournament and was very successful. Mr Christie said we walked like snails but we arrived on time! Once everyone was ready the first group of swimmers were called up for their heat. Each competitor stood in front of their designated lane, positioned ready to dive in. “On your marks…Get set… Go!!” The contestants all dove in at once. The competitors on the side cheered them on screaming their lungs off. The final winners of the finals were Tia, Mark, Finn, Kate, Nina, Lucas and Aussie. St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 15 Give a Kid a Blanket By Noah and Emmie During Term 2, a notice went out to the school community asking students to bring in both second-hand and new blankets. “Give a Kid a Blanket” is a charity that Room 14 supported, helping children and families who are struggling to provide for themselves. Although named “Give a Kid a Blanket”, there were a variety of items you could donate such as blankets, pajamas, hot water bottles, pillows, and more, for the purpose of keeping kiwi families warm during winter. This charity has been supported by St Heliers school for the past few years, and this year was no different. The entire school community was generous with all of the Food Drive By Charlotte and Belle St. Heliers School is all about giving back, and in Term 1 the Year 8s have worked hard to support the community. Each student at St Heliers School was asked to bring in a can of non-perishable food or toiletry item for the Glen Innes food bank, and put it into their class box provided by the Year 8s. On the day of the Easter mufti day, our helpful Year 8s brought the boxes into the hall where a representative of the Glen Innes food bank took the donations back to the charity. They gave all the generous donations to the less fortunate so they could enjoy a safe, happy, healthy Easter. Peter from the Glen Innes food bank was very pleased and grateful for the amount of cans and toiletries provided. Each classroom had two or more boxes filled to the top and the car we packed them into was very full. Thank you St Heliers school for taking part to help others, and ensuring others can have a happy Easter! items donated, and as such, there were many blankets, pajamas, hot water bottles and bed sheets piled in the doorway of Room 14. All of these items will help keep families who are less fortunate, to stay warm for winter. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 15 12/5/2022 10:53:18 AM

16 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Landmark Walk Sofia R and Marin The Landmark Walk was a definite highlight for many people in Term 1. From Churchill Park to St Heliers library, we walked many kilometres to see all the historic landmarks St Heliers and Glendowie has to offer. The reason for going on this walk was that our inquiry topic was “Our Little Place in the World.” This topic included learning about St Heliers past and our area's landmarks. We think we are speaking for everyone when we say we had no idea there was so much rich history in our little area. Learning about our local history is very important because a community is greatly shaped by its past. It was very interesting learning about all the landmarks that we weren’t aware were right at our doorstep. Before this amazing experience we all chose a landmark to do a 50 second speech on. This was meant to be an informative speech that taught everyone about each historic landmark. The speeches definitely gave people a good understanding about the landmark’s rich history. This is because they included a hooking introduction making everyone want to listen to the interesting facts about all these terrific landmarks. After the introduction we had to do a body paragraph that stated lots of important information about the landmarks we visited. After everyone listened to these speeches we can guarantee that next time when they go to visit these places they will be telling their family and friends all about the history of them. Weta Workshop Unleashed by Naomi, Alfie and Brisou The atmosphere was electric as we made our way through the city to the Weta Workshop. As soon as we walked into the building there were towering (and freakishly realistic) sculptures from Lord of The Rings to greet us. At the reception, the security guard Jeff suggested that we would make a delicious casserole. He was a life-like creation of a humanised ogre (with human characteristics). One of the tour guides, Darty, was humorous and had plenty of jokes to tell us as we were led around the first area - horror. Blood, monsters and body parts were a common sight in the dark, loud and immersive room. There were plenty of things to touch and interact with. To get to the next room - fantasy - we went through the meat shack and we didn’t heed the warning. It was pitch black, and bloody meat hung from the ceiling. Because the room was so small the limbs were constantly touching us as we pushed through. Next you had to go through a very narrow corridor into what you thought was a safe ending, but organs hung from the ceiling, and a massive flash of light awaited with a bang. You could hear the screams from everywhere. Fantasy land was beautiful. A life-like castle stood in the entrance made up of mainly recycled materials, and then we passed into where creativity was flowing. There was the chance to trace a variety of monsters, model faces with foil and more. The final room was Sci-Fi. A massive robot was encased in a volcano. As we came into a large open area, all we could do was stare in awe. Suddenly, a small show started. The robot came to life, moving its hand, and body parts were flashing, As if it was reaching for its spaceship. We proceeded to spot a creature that escaped in an animation, and ended up being captured throughout the film. Photos were taken at almost every room. It was never endingEveryone loved it. Unfortunately that was the end of our trip, but we left with gift bags so that we could continue to unleash our creativity. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 16 12/5/2022 10:53:29 AM

St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 17 Museum Trip by Shara and Sofia Our Term 2 trip was to the Auckland War Memorial Museum. We were given a guided tour around the warrelated exhibits. Each exhibit had its own unique aspect that immersed us in the haistory of the Wars. From a timeline which stretched throughout the room, with all the important time stamps of the First World War, to an interactive tactile experience that involved real objects from the World Wars (grenades, rations in Writer’s Festival By Aaron and Aussie In August, Year 7 and 8 went off into the city to attend the 2022 Auckland Writers Festival. Many famous authors attended the yearly gathering including writers such as Kwame Alexander, Sonya Wilson, Graci Kim and Gareth Ward who all shared their ideas on how they wrote their stories and how others can write their own. The authors shared their inspiration about what got them to write and a little bit about their characters. Kwame Alexander is a poet famous for writing a New York Times bestseller known as “The Crossover”. He shared a bit about his inspiration and characters. Kwame has now grown to be a very well known author of many famous books. Sonya Wilson wrote the novel “Spark Hunter”. She talked about herself and her characters. “The last fallen star” was written by Graci Kim. In her presentation, she talked about her books, had a fun quiz and engaged her audience very well. Lastly, we heard from Gareth Ward. He wrote “Brasswitch and Bot” This book is based in Victoria times with a modern twist. He shared some magic tricks as well as facts about his book. After their presentation, all the authors answered student’s questions. Overall, the day was very interesting and all the authors were amazing. clothing), we learnt about a wide range of different peoples’ experiences during wartime. An exhibit which drew particular attention was the Scars on the Heart exhibit. It provided the visual experience of what war was like, both for those fighting and those back at home. It was an educational and fun visit, which opened our eyes to what war was like. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 17 12/5/2022 10:53:45 AM

18 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Year 8 Matariki Celebrations On the 24th of June every year, the Maori New Year (or Matariki) is celebrated with kai, spending time with family and looking back on the past and looking forward to the future. This year, Year 8 celebrated Matariki in traditional ways, with a twist. Room 19 made bird feeders designed with Matariki patterns. The intentions? To give back to Papatuanuku (mother earth), and the creatures that inhabit our kainga. Room 19's designs had to be accessible for the birds, and efficient so the bird food doesn't rot (and had to be painted to the theme of Matariki). Room 15 made manu aute, or kites. Maori flew kites for recreation, but also to communicate, measure the likelihood of a successful enemy attack, or to find offenders. They are also used as means to communicate with those who have passed on, connecting heaven and earth. Room 15 made them as a part of Matariki tradition and (possibly flew the kites, insert it in here). Room 14 made Poi Toa. Poi Toa is similar to Poi, except Poi Toa are used in games and are longer and bigger in size. Games for the Poi Toa are usually just made up (Room 14 made a game where you throw them). This year, Matariki was a public holiday for the first time, Year 8 sure had an amazing Matariki. Spheros By Zeya Finn The Digital Technologies rotation is a three week long activity, incorporating fun, brain-racing digital projects with the fantastic teachers of Year 8. Spheros is one of the three activities held by the one and only Mr Christie. You are given the mind-boggling task of constructing a floating bridge for a 168-gram spherical sphero drone. This may sound easy, but there are limited materials making this project harder than it would usually be. The materials consist of one handful of dry spaghetti and wooden skewers, one roll of tape and newspaper. Despite the arduous task at hand, the activity is an amazing way to show your amazing architecture skills and teamwork, while learning how to drive a drone. BeeBots by Bella and Elijah During the Y8 Digital Technology Rotation, one of the activities was coding with the BeeBots. First, students experienced using beebots in groups of two on an i-pad. We coded these beebots to complete different types of puzzles and mazes. After that it was time to get real life versions of beebots they had little buttons on their backs (for the coding). We were given wooden blocks and chopsticks to make our own mazes. That's when we figured out the beebots weren’t that… accurate. Finally, we got into groups of four and made the beebots do a choreographed dance to a song. As a fun little end to the session, we got all our beebots in a line and together they did a dance to a song chosen by Mrs Ward. By Zack In the Year 8 Digital Technology Rotation, one of the technologies we learnt about was Makey Makey. A Makey Makey is like a motherboard in which you use small cables with alligator clips that connect to a computer. We worked in small groups, each with a Makey Makey kit. First we hooked a cable up to the earth hole at the bottom of the board. After that, we plugged it into either the up, down, left or right arrows. When we held the wire in our hand and touched one of the arrows on the motherboard it made the cursor on the computer move. Our group figured out that if two people make contact with their skin and one person holds the power while the other touches the board, it still works! Another activity we were exposed to was when we used tin foil to make a keyboard for a piano to make music. At the very end of the lesson the class got into a circle holding hands as we tried to make one big Makey Makey circuit. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 18 12/5/2022 10:54:01 AM

St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 19 Year 8’s Show Preparation Year 8’s Show Preparation Over Terms 2, 3 & 4, Year 8 spent time and effort working on what would be one of the most important events of the year. Each class equally participated and put in devotion to make sure, when the show came, it would be to the highest standard. Classes scrambled to learn their spoken words as students consistently questioned what they were doing. Actions were thought of on the spot. The teachers rummaged through suggestions hoping a brilliant idea would come. Plays were also manufactured; each class created their own original idea. Students concocted and combined their concepts making the final product a team effort. In the background, ballroom dancing was being taught. The dances would be useful when the show time came as they would also be performed. Later in Term 3, boys and girls separated. Boys focused on taiaha and learned to respect the object, while girls learned the same with poi. Teachers led the activities while students concentrated on timing and movement. Day after day improvement was shown by all. Te Rakau was taught to all. Concentration and the ability to listen to the beat were two of the many benefits of learning the traditional Maori stick game. To the rhythm of the song Rainbow Connection, they practiced a beat and learned to coordinate passing to one another. Together Year 8 danced to Men in Black, recreating the original dance moves from the music video. The excitement of the show, which was to happen in Term four, was unexplainable. Each class worked on their own individual performance in the show to represent their class. All ideas were kept as a surprise for further show practices. Most of Term four was spent practicing for the show. St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 19 12/5/2022 10:54:06 AM

20 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Year 8 participated in their annual Ballroom Dance Competition at the end of Term 3. We rehearsed for weeks in advance. Jonny Williams, a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, taught the pupils three dances over the term to help them get ready: The Jive, Samba (not danced in the competition), and the Cha-Cha. Each pair danced once in each style of dance. After everyone had their turn, a selected number of people were called back to the dance floor to dance again. Then out of those people there were the quarter finals, and then the semi finals. Lastly, 8 pairs got into the finals. After they danced they were called back onto the stage to get a placing from 1-8. In the Cha-Cha Elsie and Tyler came in first place. In second place was Alyssa and Izrael, with Cleo and Seb third. In The Jive, first place went to Sonya and Chad, second place went to Ava and Tyler, and Charlotte and Asahi came third. The competition and the lead up to it was very nerve racking, but on the day everyone put their best into the dancing and had an unforgettable time. Just like when Andy grew too old for Woody and Buzz, and Bonnie was trying something new, R15 has outgrown St Heliers School. As they get ready to say goodbye, they remember taking their first steps into the classroom, unsure of the challenges ahead. They knew they were in for a tough year, but they didn’t know how it would play out. Like Dolly, Mrs Ward attempted to help R15 understand the ways of Year 8 - but to no avail. But luckily, hidden away in the classroom cupboards, maturity and resilience were found. They learned to self-manage and organise their time. They learned that books fall apart when you bend the covers back. They learned they could write a brilliant essay. They learned ‘get it finished by Friday’ means ‘get it finished by Friday’. R15 realised that it’s ok to hold hands while dancing, that they’re able to sail an opti (so long as they bob their head and don’t capsize), to get good feedback they have to give good feedback, and when you disrupt people’s learning they get annoyed. They discovered every single one of them was capable of greatness. But most importantly, They learned that working as a team was key. Friends were found in unlikely places, They took turns carrying each other along the way. They helped each other through the darkest times, searching for the light. And with that support, they ascended higher than they could have imagined, and felt on top of the world Now they wait for the bell to ring one final time, seeking success in the next chapter of their lives. They know they have to move forward, but are nervous (just like when they started the year). As they start on their new journey; Naomi, just like Bo Peep, continues the fight for Women’s Rights Channeling Forky, Kylee still does ‘a Kylee’ Sam continues using her voice box - a pal for Gabby Gabby And Sofia and Seb still run the show, just like Woody and Buzz. Rm15 are all set - Laters St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 26 12/5/2022 10:55:09 AM
