52 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Dear Room 14 and co, This has been an extra special year with our Year 8’s with few interruptions to our school learning, and what a difference it has made. Room 14, I will miss you and all the amazing learning and growth you have accomplished this year - and of course, all of the fun we have had. Keep giggling, losing jackets, being kind to pigeons and other whogeewargees. If you ever find my million dollar cheque you know where to find me! To all of Year 8, come back and visit to tell us about your amazing college adventures. Take every opportunity you are given. The more you put in, the more you will get out of your years there. Y8 Rocks! To R19 and the Y8 Cohort. If you were to stand before the person you were at the start of the year, I doubt you would recognise the person standing infront of you. Each and every one of you has grown massively this year, both academically and as human beings. You have made the most of the opportunities presented to you and you will leave this school truly ready to begin the next chapter of your life. Hit the ground running next year wherever that may be, continue giving life 110% and always remember that life is more enjoyable when you can share it’s special moments with the people who matter to you most. Look forward to hearing your stories as you drop in over the years. Don’t be a stranger! What an epic ride 2022 has been Year 8. It has been a privilege watching you grow from timid Year 7’s into the resilient, compassionate, self-confident young adults we see before us today. The next part of your journey starts now. Take every opportunity with both hands and aim to fly high. Every one of you is capable of great things. “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them” - Walt Disney. We love nothing more than hearing all about what you’re up to, so please drop in over the next few years. - KERRY HERBERT - LISA WARD - BEN CHRISTIE St Heliers Yearbook-2022-12-05 Final.indd 52 12/5/2022 10:57:03 AM

56 St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 Winner Bella Mann R15 This art is a puzzle representing SHS as a whole. Each piece is used to represent a different part of our school. There are four pieces that are just solid colours - Kikorangi, Whero, Kakariki, and Kowhai, which are the colours for our St Helier’s houses. Two of the pieces in my art are of the beach, which is an important part of our school. I use bright colours to make it stand out and make it interesting to look at. Hands cupping the SHS logo show the care and other values that we demonstrate at SHS. The diverse range of skin tones symbolizes our individuality and our cultural backgrounds. Staring at the SHS logo are three kids, with unique styles symbolizing our diverse students. In the background there are a few children dotted upon the clouds, as well as a trouble maker. The art is exhibited with Rangitoto in the foreground and the rest of St Heliers Beach in the background. The previous 145 years have seen these locations and has become a part of our school and of us. St Heliers School Yearbook 2022 57 For my art I chose to use a book as my main feature. This represents the different chapters in our life and how a new one is starting. The St Heliers School logo is coloured in with the house colours to represent the different houses that Year 8 students are in. The book has lots of different things coming out of the middle. The basketball shows the sports that we have participated in this year. The different pictures all have a meaning which relates back to our time in Year 8. I chose small details in my art that have meaning. I drew Pohutukawa trees, which are native to New Zealand. I’ve included Rangitoto and a beach in the background (St Heliers). Because the sunset contrasts with all the less vibrant - it makes it match. In the foreground, there is the St Heliers crest, and the girl is holding a banner with our logo on it. Small details relate to St Heliers and New Zealand. I think this design really acknowledges what St Heliers means. For my yearbook cover I have split a page into four with the St Heliers logo in the middle. The four areas are important things about my year like leadership roles, Waterwise, the Y8 show, and camp. Most of the 4 areas are also covered in the four colours. This is seen in the Waterwise scene as Kikorangi, Y8 show as Kowhai, Camp Adair as Whero, and Leadership roles as Kakariki.
