Message
Dear Year 8 Students of 2021
What a year to finish your schooling at
St Heliers!
I have known most of you for eight
years since you started at St Heliers
as bright-eyed 5-year-olds and the
others since joining the school in the
past few years. You have all grown
into wonderful young people and I
am proud of who you have become.
Thank you for the contribution you
have made to our school.
Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns
have had a significant impact on many
aspects of our lives, but what has impressed me about the ‘class of 21’ is the determination
you have shown to keeping working to the best of your abilities for those periods of the year
while you were engaged in distance learning and how you have supported one and other.
You now move onto the next stage of your schooling Make the
journey. There are so many things to look forward to most of all the
as you start your secondary education. Make the most opportunities
of all the opportunities that will come your way and be and challenges
your own person. Always remember the values that that come your
the staff of St Heliers have instilled into you.
way
I wish each one of you success and happiness for this
next exciting time in your lives and I look forward to
hearing about all the great things you will achieve.
With every best wish,
Mr McCarthny

As student leaders of the St Heliers School community, we are
immensely grateful to uphold this significant role. Throughout
2021, we have traveled to events and experienced several
opportunities and adventures. We are all very overwhelmed
by the magnificent amount of help and support from all the
teachers, staff, and students at St Heliers School. Maintaining
the role of a student leader means we are determined to obtain
the responsibilities and aspects of a leader. We are dedicated
to becoming role-models for other peers, and we are all capable
of leading the younger students to becoming better leaders
themselves. Being able to be more involved with them is great
for them and for us, and is so much fun. It is such an amazing
experience to have. Working with each other is so extraordinary,
and working with our school has been great. Representing our
school has been such an honor, and as student leaders we can
give back to the school and help out. The events have been a great learning experience and we can use the life lessons
throughout our lives. The privilege of being able to help everyone is a real honor. We are very grateful for the Year 8
students that have become our friends throughout our time at St Heliers School. We are hopeful these friendships
will carry on as we leave. The 16 of us all agree that this role made us proud to be the leaders of the school, alongside
the rest of the year group.
National Young Leaders day was a great experience for all of
the student leaders. We got to hear from a range of leaders
from sports players to actors to singers. Each leader gave us
a different message. The first speaker was Cam Calkoen. He
was born with Cerebral Palsy. Although Cam has this disability
it has not stopped him from competing in running events and
giving motivational speeches. One thing in particular that we
noticed that Cam said, was “if you are nice to people, those
people will be nice back to you no matter if you are disabled”.
Cam also shared with us his favourite word - Awesome!!
After we listened to Cam, Brooke Neal came on stage. She
is a former Blackstick who went to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
She also has a Commonwealth Games gold medal to her name.
After we heard this about her we were all expecting her to
talk about some of her hockey experiences, but we were wrong. She used the concept of a duck when she was speaking.
Ducks look like they glide across the water but in reality they actually struggle underwater with their legs. What
Brooke meant was that everyone struggles with some things, but there are some people that don’t like to show their
struggles to the wider world.
The next speaker was Shay Wright - one of 200 very lucky people to receive an email from what was the president of
America (Barack Obama) to all come together to celebrate young leaders. Shay said that he felt extremely nervous but
that nervousness was natural and that you should do something bigger than yourself.
But that wasn’t it, we still had two speakers left and we could not wait to find out who they were. The 4th speaker at the
event was Julian Dennison (Ricky Baker) a young famous kiwi actor that has participated in many popular shows around
the world. Julian had many great quotes of wisdom. Like “Don’t be famous, be a legend”. A little secret from Julian
himself is that once before an interview he was really nervous and thirsty so he drank 3 bottles of water and during the
interview, he couldn’t hold it in so he peed his pants. After the famous kiwi actor was a New Zealand Musician. Benny
Tipene. Beeny had taught himself how to play an instrument. He taught himself how to play guitar and piano.
It truly was a day to remember.

Houses
House Captains 2021:
Whero - Isabella Katte and Jakob Handy
Kowhai - Anna Sutherland and Christian Gerson
Kakariki - Rory Smith-Rice and Amelia Morris (Term 1-2),
Amelia Lawlor (Terms 2-4)
Kikorangi - Finlay Leary and Yfke Lotte Reijmer (Term 1-2),
Lachlan Norris (Terms 2-4)
This year, as a House Captain, we have been involved in so many awesome
activities and have been given a great deal of opportunities. Leading our
houses through competitions, races, and challenges, has been difficult but
very rewarding. When we were newly given the opportunity to become a
house captain, we were so excited. We all knew that we wanted to make
a difference to this school, one that might stay in the SHS house system
forever. All of the houses created a mascot. We also have started creating
house games to be (hopefully) held in Term 4 - a series of mini games like
tug of war and sack races for all of Year 7 and 8. Being a house captain is
not an easy task though, there are many jobs and responsibilities that come
with the job. It has been a true joy leading our houses and putting a smile
on people’s faces when they see our mascots.

2021 EVENTS
OUR YEAR 8 STUDENTS
Waterwise
- by Leo A, Leo B and Logan
Waterwise was split into three different groups. Those groups were
then split again when it was their turn to go on the water. The two
activities were optimist sailing and kayaking. The sailing included
going round marks and generally learning how to control the boat.
The kayaking group would follow the instructor down the shoreline
of Okahu bay until they reached a post on the other side of the bay.
During this time all of us were splashing our friends and getting
them wet with the kayak paddle. It was really fun. Then the group
would race back to shore as fast as they could.
On land, there was an activity booklet to do. Some of the tasks from
the booklet were:
- create your own landmark
- compare the old and the now St Heliers (for this activity we learnt
a lot about the past of our area
- take photos (relating to a theme), that would then be used to make
a collage.
The weather on the day was great. The sun was shining and there
was plenty of wind to make the optis go fast. Everyone really enjoyed
the sailing and tried their hardest. Kayaking was a great laugh when
everyone came out soaking wet. We think everyone learnt lots from
the experience and can't wait to go there again.

Year 8 Camp
- by Emily, Joshua, Vahid, Yufeng, Caleb, Lola, Freddy, Hugo
Deep in the Hunua Ranges lies a camp so great, that the Year 8’s get to go there every year. It's the one
and only CAMP ADAIR. Filled with all we needed, Camp Adair was the highlight for Year 8. Camp was
filled with many little details, like playing infinity tag with the whole of Year 8 into the night, or washing
the dishes and, in my experience, getting absolutely sprayed. But enough about the small things, what
about the bigger picture? At Camp Adair, there is a mudslide - a slide of running water that pushes you
down into mud. Most Year 8 students enjoyed this, and many went up 2, 3, and even 4 times. People
would give tips on how to go down the slide faster, and at the end of the slide, a ginormous ditch of
muddy water was waiting for you! The mudslide was enjoyed by many, and some would even say that it
was better than the confidence course.
The confidence course is by far the best way to
have some fun and get muddy. We start off with
the dry activities like linking hands and going
backwards through a cage, and then screaming
the song twinkle twinkle little star. But of
course at some point we have to get absolutely
drenched in mud, and that is when we go up
and down, into and out, of the mud racing each
other. Then we move onto the rope swing where
we have to swing through mud and make it to
the other side without falling in. Then by far my
favorite tire, this is where you have to jump from
tire to tire to make it to the other side. And then
last but not leave a well deserved hot shower.
The food at Camp Adair was delicious,
breakfast, lunch and dinner. For dinner
we ate nachos, burgers and butter
chicken. Breakfast consisted of cereal
such as rice bubbles and cornflakes.
It wasn't just cereal though, there was
spaghetti and baked beans. You can’t
go a day without dessert either, dessert
was mostly delicious ice cream on the
first night, the second was a cold ice
cream sandwich and finally the last
night a cold custard with canned fruits.
For all the fun activities we needed fuel
throughout the day, so lunch was our go
to.

Cabins are basically the alternative to bedrooms except there are ten people in one cabin. We slept here
but other than that not much happened in the day - it was just storage. We got to choose our cabin
group. Every morning the teachers would come and wake us up at 6:30am. No one got enough sleep
with 10 o'clock bedtimes. Every day the teachers checked our cabins for an X-factor - something to
impress the judges. Overall it was fun (sleeping in the cabins was a good experience).
Everyone was prepared for skit night. It was time to shine. Time to whip out the costumes and the hysteric
facial expressions. Some were too eager to get on stage,
while others grew a deep fear about performing in front
of others. Skit night started with almost everyone shaking
in their seats. Each group had put a lot of time and effort
into the skits, and the pressure was on to impress not
only the students, but the teachers as well. The bachelor,
a day at camp, funky penguins got no talent, and a day at
school, are only some of the spectacular skits performed
to us. After tears of joy and laughter, people sat back in
their seats knowing that the night was about to come
to an end. However, to much surprise, each parent came
out in a full army outfit. They began to sing a different
version of the song YMCA, and it was very shocking
knowing they had such short notice to prepare. But wait,
that's not all. The teachers had to perform a skit too. The
lights had flickered off and everyone went silent. Music
started to boom and the teachers crept out from the
corner with glow sticks stuck to their body - it looked as
though they were little glow stick people. Every teacher
started to bust out some moves, making it hard not to
smile. Before the night ended, the teachers announced
the winners of the skits. It wasn’t a surprise when they
exclaimed the winners were the funky penguins with the
act, funky penguins got no talent. Skit night was clearly a big highlight of everyone's Year 8 camp 2021.

Imagine this: a 15 meter high wobbly pole that you have to
climb. When you get to the top, you feel like a bird. Then
the instructor yells the hardest order to follow, ‘jump’. As
you anxiously jump off it feels like time stopped. You come
back to the real world when the ropes squeeze tight on you,
finishing the pamper pole. Right next to that is the multi
vine. Climbing up the tree makes you feel like tarzan, and
swinging from rope to rope is the true forest feeling. When
you come down from up top the mission impossible music
plays in your head. Finishing that a true challenge comes up
ahead. The abseiling is tricky, yet extremely fun. After using
the ladder to climb to the top you get clipped in, get ready
and abseil down like a scene out of mission impossible.
Flashlights off, holding on tight, ready to face the world. As
we swarmed quietly through the dark pebble paths, Year 8
slowly approached the grim alley that was the glow worm
trail. After what seemed to be years of anticipation, we
walked into the colorless night in a single file line holding
tight onto whoever was in front of us, not daring to let go;
we slowly strolled in gazing at the blue dotted glow worms
spread out amongst the bushes, we took a large circle and
came back out. We then waited to go onto the Burma trail
which was an extremely bumpy but fun dark path where all
we had for guidance was a rope, and a lot of confidence.
Eventually we made it out safely and by then, we were ready
to go to bed.

Sports
Swimming Sports
Swimming Sports is a very important day in the school calendar as it is very social, while also allowing
the serious swimmers to compete for a spot in Eastern Zones. There are four styles of swimming you can
do - butterfly, backstroke, freestyle or breaststroke. The students have a choice of what stroke they would
like to do, but everyone must compete. SHS Swimming Sports is very competitive, but everyone still has
fun. The four houses competing were Whero, Khowai, Kakariki and Kikorangi. Each house had their own
individual chant - all houses screaming their chants as loud as possible for bonus house points.
We went into the pool with our voices and came
back puffed and silent. The following Y8 students
went through to Eastern Zones: Yfke Lotte,
William, Connor, Amelia M, Rikus, Logan, Olivia
and Emily. Not everyone got the opportunity to
go, as you need to get either 1st or 2nd place
in two lengths, but everyone tried their hardest
and all did very well. All houses did well but at
the end of the day, Kakariki ended up winning.

Cross Country 2021
- By Amelia Morris and Edward Mitchelson
On the 10th of August, Year 4 to 8 had Cross Country.
This was held at Churchill Park. Each year group ran
around a track marked by parents. Year 8 left school
at 10:40am. We walked and got there as the Year 7
girls were finishing. This meant we had to wait around
for a little bit because we were early. The Year 8 girls
went first running - 2 laps - and the top 8 girls were
Mimi, Olivia, Jessica, Emily, Hannah, Anna, Amelia and
Isabella. All the girls were very tired, though they still
cheered on the boys when they crossed the finish line
after them. The top 8 boys were Jakob, Riley, Aleksei,
William, Christian, Rikus, Edward and Finlay. Everyone
showed great sportsmanship, tried their best, and
made an effort by turning up and giving it their all.
The teachers were very generous and handed out
lollipops to everyone for doing an amazing job. Overall
it was a great day - everyone ran well and were very
proud of themselves.

Boys Football
On the 3rd of June the Year 8 Boys Football Tournament began - our first game was against St Thomas’s.
The entire team was very nervous, but we had a positive mindset. Sadly the other team made an incredible
comeback to bring the score level at 2-2. Our second game was against Kings Prep, and sadly we had to take
a loss in this game. Next up we are against Stonefields. We beat this team with a solid 8-0 performance. If we
wanted a chance to qualify for the next round, we had to win all of our next games - which we did - Churchill
Park (4-0) and Kohimarama (7-0).
In the next round, we faced St Kentigern Boys School. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Mrs Ward
and Mr Christie had turned up for this game. We took a loss (5-1), which eliminated our chance of going to the
final. We then qualified for the 3rd and 4th playoff, again against Kings Prep. At the end of that game, Kings
celebrated and cheered as they came 3rd in the Eastern Zones Football tournament.
Our coach cheered us up, saying we did very well and represented our school perfectly. Overall we played well
and thought we deserved 3rd place, but unfortunately we came 4th.
Girls Football
The girls football tournament was a great place to challenge
ourselves against other schools. On Wednesday the 26th
of May one team of Year 8, and one team of Year 7 went
to Madills Farm to represent our school in the Eastern Bays
girls football tournament. At Madills Farm there were about
8 schools such as: St Heliers School, Glendowie Primary,
Baradene, Stonefields, Parnell, Churchill Park and Ellerslie
Primary. Our Year 8 team played 4 schools over the whole
day. First we played Glendowie Primary and we lost 3-2.
Then we played Parnell and we lost 2-1. Next we played
Ellerslie and we won 5-1, and lastly we played Glendowie
Year 7 winning 3-2. Unfortunately we did not get to play in
the finals, but that's ok because we all played really hard and
we played as a team.
This tournament was a great experience for many of us. I
think we all learned a lot from it and had a great time. We all
pushed each other to get an even better result. This was a
great day with lots of fun and lots of giving it a good go.

2021 Writers Festival
- By Anna Sutherland, Mirahkle Lio Jones, Milena Scott & Simone Corballis
The Auckland Writers Festival at the Aotea Centre, was a very enjoyable event for the Year 7&8 students. Four speakers
showed us their work, and all had entertaining stories in their presentations. The first author, Brian Selznick, talked about his
artwork and four of his books (one of which was made into the movie ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’). The next author was
Shilo Kino, a young Maori woman, who last year released a book called ‘The Porangi Boy’. She had been bullied as a child for
how she looked, and her book is about a Maori boy who goes through some of the same troubles that she experienced. Ten
years ago Jessie O wrote a book called ‘Locked Down’. Because we are experiencing something very similar with COVID-19,
she recently republished the book. Ben Brown, although not an author, talked to us about his opinions on some books. He
was very enthusiastic and his opinions were quite entertaining to hear. The Writers Festival was a brilliant experience - very
inspirational, and even entertaining at one point.
Writing Workshop - By Olivia Grace
During May, a group of Year 7 & 8 students were selected to participate in
the ‘Win With Words’ writing workshop. We were driven down to the St
Heliers Bowling Club, and eagerly waited to see what all of this excitement
about writing was about. We walked past the people doing lawn bowls
and were directed upstairs to a room right above the lawn bowls. It was a
sunny day, and the view from the room was amazing. We could see right
out to Rangitioto. Sitting down at a desk, we were greeted by Melinda
Szymanic, a popular children and adult author, who was ready to fill us all
up with her amazing knowledge of writing.
Police Fitness Challenge Melinda began the workshop by introducing herself, and asking us a few
questions about our prior knowledge of writing. She gave us so much
information, our hands were frantically trying to keep up with everything
she said. We wanted to get it all on paper to look back on later. She read
us one of her books, which was so amazing - a fantasy about a boy and a
crocodile. Melinda talked to us about all the techniques she used, language
and so much more. She instructed us on how to structure a story and how
to get ideas. How to make a character interesting, and so much more. We
came back from the workshop with so many ideas for upcoming stories,
and so much new information we can incorporate into our writing. We
really enjoyed the workshop, and were glad we got the opportunity to go.
- By Anna Sutherland
The Police Fitness Challenge was amazing. Arriving on the day with a strong sense that we were going to win, this day was
going to be great.
During May, four Year 8 students (Riley Leith, Emily Stanton, Anna Sutherland and Charlie Webb) were selected to compete
in a Police Fitness challenge at the Auckland Netball Stadium in St Johns. The first activity we participated in was the hardest.
It was an obstacle course that took around 2:30 minutes for us to complete. It started with pushing a trailer, then running
around the stadium once before reaching a beam, which we walked across in single file. When the last person reached the
end, we sprinted, and jumped over a bar about stomach height. We ran around cones, and ducked under hurdles. There
was a window frame to climb through, walls to scale, and more, all while sticking with, and helping, your team.
After this, we had another test of teamwork, yet this one was slightly different. One of the four of us was a policeman, and
had to stand, blindfolded, at the front of a narrow path littered with evidence. There was one witness, who was somebody
watching the policeman, and telling another team member who was with them what to tell the dispatcher, who was a
team member facing away from the situation, where to tell the policeman to move through a walkie talkie. It was a lot less
complicated in real life! The policeman had to pick up some gloves off the ground and put them on, then pick up an evidence
bag and a ball, before crossing a line and making it back to your team. We came first of our group for that.
Lastly, we had a short test, which was pretty straightforward and simple. First, you would jump next to a measuring wall, to 13
see how high you can reach. We didn’t do very well on that one. The next was a grip test, where we squeezed this device
as hard as we could, and it measured how strong our grip was. We did surprisingly well in that. Finally, we had to do as
many pushups as we could, and somebody counted us. To get into the Police Force in real life, women have to do twenty,
and men have to do around thirty-five. It was a very fun day, although pretty exhausting.

Cultural Shared Lunch
On Wednesday the 14th of April, the Year 8 classes shared a cultural lunch to celebrate the end of the Term 1.
Despite the rain, the cultural lunch was very exciting for everyone involved. We all dressed in our country's cultural
clothing and brought food that is special to our culture. Everyone got to learn about each other's different traditions.
Students brought food from around the world such as New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands, India, China
and many more. Being able to display our diversity, and find out about each other's cultures, was very interesting.
The students were not the only ones who took part in the cultural lunch. Our teachers dressed up in their special
costumes too. Mrs Ward and Mrs Herbert proudly represented New Zealand (in their All Black jerseys). Mr Christie
dressed in a Scottish kilt. At the end of the day we had so much food left over, that the juniors had to come and
eat some of the leftovers. Everyone got to learn so much about each other's cultures and enjoyed expressing
their own country’s differences.

Y8 Museum Trip
On Wednesday the 9th of June, all of Year 8 went on a school trip to the Auckland Museum - our topic for Term
2 is ‘The Diversity of Life During Wartime’. The Auckland Museum had a really cool War Memorial. There was an
excellent museum educator called Arron, who took each class around the war part of the museum, explaining
everything about WW1 and answering everyone's questions. When we went to the memorial hall, Arron talked
to us about the flags and why they were there. At the second memorial hall there were heaps of WW1 items
that some soldiers used in WW1, and we were able to play with them (some people got to dress up). There were
spades, food, clothes, cooking tools, letters, gas masks, first add book, socks and hats. It was very cool - an
excellent experience. While a class was on the tour, the others got to explore the museum.

LANDMARK WALK
On the 29th of March in Term 1, the whole of year 8 walked the long, adventurous walk around St Heliers. We
walked firstly to the farm of Churchill park with all of the meadows and cows. Windy Karaka Bay was next, followed
by scenic Glover Park and the towering Water Tower where we took a short break for morning tea. Next was the
historic Achilles Point with the amazing views, cold, windy ladys/Ladies bay followed, and then we took the long
trek along St Heliers beach making it to the remains of what used to be the St Heliers wharf, the beach, the hotel
and the bathing sheds. Everyone was getting a little hungry so the teachers thought it would be a good idea to
stop for lunch. We then crossed the road and went to the drinking fountain, Vellenoweth green and the Moreton
Bay fig trees. Lastly we came across the amazing Glen Orchard house which has been around since the 1850s.
At each of these destinations we all had to present a speech that we had made earlier in front of our classes.
Everyone spoke clearly and the speeches were nice to listen to, even though we had to fight against the wind,
traffic, pedestrians and the crashing of waves. We learnt heaps of facts we didn’t know about these landmarks,
and it was fun finding out about our village and what it used to be like. Overall this was an amazing experience
but we were all ready for a good night's sleep after a big walk.

Room 14 :The year that was...
This year has been a weird one. We all had a great start and were
loving school. Learning was fun and exciting, especially with how
awesome the teachers are! In Term 1 we had a couple of weeks
at the start and then we got to go on camp. The Landmark Walk
was really amazing and a bit different, because we had to prepare
our own 50 second speeches. They had to be brief and many of us
were feeling nervous because we had never written a 50 second
speech before. Then when we undertook Waterwise that was really
exhilarating. Next, we had a Cultural lunch where everyone brought
something from their culture and we had a feast. This term was full
of action packed learning.
In Term 2 we had another exciting term studying WW1 and 2. As well as
making care packages for the soldiers, we made podcasts answering our
own questions on the topic of the two wars. We visited the Museum to
help us gain more knowledge about the wars. At the end of the term,
every class walked around looking at each other's inquiry projects. No
one knew that term 3 was going to be so different to term 2...
Term 3 kick started well with ballroom dancing practices with Johnny in the
hall. We also started to practice for cross country, doing laps around the school
block to get better. The real cross country event didn’t have to be postponed
like last year, and all went smoothly and as planned. Our inquiry topic was
Hauora, and we learned about mindsets and personal wellbeing. Week 4 was
when everything changed. Covid-19 landed us in lockdown, for the third time
this year, but this one was much longer. Lockdown quickly spanned for the rest
of the term, and we continued learning, except through a screen.
Sadly this lockdown continued into Term 4. EZ cross country was cancelled, so
was ballroom dancing, as well as the show that was already pushed back a year.
Overall though Room 14 have had an amazing year of learning and joking
around, thanks to an amazing teacher, Mrs Herbert.
