Secondly, time robs us of our mental faculties. It is an undeniable fact that as time progresses, the control we have over our minds slips ever so slowly that it goes by almost unnoticed. For example, we may sometimes forget where we put our phones or our keys and alarmingly even names and faces. We know that these symptoms are most evident in Alzheimer's, a cruel disease that robs its patients of their minds, but most importantly their memories. To quote an oft-quoted adage, ‘true death only comes when we are forgotten’. So when our cherished friends and family members slowly forget the memories that are worth a thousand lifetimes, the pain is nigh unbearable. Especially so, given that this disease does not even harm the physical health of the patient but ‘merely’ harms the emotional and mental well-being of them and their closest family members and confidantes. Now, most of us will probably at most be forgetful but never to an extent of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. But even so, the wit and intelligence that were once a roaring bonfire are now a dying ember. One of the great luxuries in life is the ability to learn unbounded knowledge where only the sky is the limit. To regress to a child-minded state after savouring the fruits of our thinking and daydreaming is a fate that should not be bestowed upon our most bitter of rivals. Therefore, another great treasure is our mind squirrelled away by that abstract concept known as time. Furthermore, time robs us of our bodies. It is a great and terrible truth that what we have now shall not continue to be ours in that distant future we try to forget about. This is most evident in the bodies we inhabit that are ever so slowly chipped away at by time. What was once a healthy and hale body full of vitality turns into a sickly and frail one filled with nought but medication for a prolonged period. As we age, our bodies grow weaker, and our immune systems wearier after countless defensive battles against foreign invaders. The freedom that was once had in the past to move about freely is now so cruelly taken away. Instead, we are chained to our houses at best and sterile hospitals at worst. Plans for places to see, and old friends to visit, stay as plans, and no further. But, sometimes fate is worse for others than it might be for us. Ravaged by diseases such as diabetes, limbs are removed to save the greater whole. What in the past was deemed an afterthought now seemed so dear to us. Some are dealt an even worse hand than this. Some can see but cannot speak; some can speak but cannot taste due to time. The luxury of stimulated senses that were a part and parcel of our daily lives is now confined to memory. And so it is another one of our treasures that is our bodies, now stolen by the hidden criminal known as time.
Designed by Kho Wei Ying (6AUUM) Lastly, time robs us of our relationships. Life is nothing without the relationships we cultivate whether they are our friends or our families. So, of course time decides that it is another thing that it wants to take away from us. Friends that we were once thick as thieves with, now grown up chasing dreams and ambitions that override their previous bonds with us. Of course, we do not begrudge them for it as it is their right in truth but it almost always leaves us wistful and feeling as if we are unwholesome. We sometimes meet them and have get-togethers, but never to the same extent as in our youths. But, sometimes even these get-togethers leave us more wistful than ever before, dreaming an impossible dream of having unlimited time to spare for those we hold so dear. The same dream of unlimited time unfortunately also applies to our families most especially our parents. It is a sad fact that we have already spent the majority of our life with our parents during our childhood which is seven days a week 24/7. Even if we make the effort to spend a day out of every week with our parents, we are still losing six days a week of time with them. The dearth of time we have to spend with our cherished friends and families makes it all the more painful when inevitably time reaps its toll upon them. For those of us still living, it sends us into a self-destructive spiral of regret and shame for not spending enough time that we ultimately do not have with them. Consequently, that scoundrel thief known as time has once again decided to rob one of our most precious treasures which are relationships. To sum up, time is the greatest thief in all of history for stealing that which is worth its weight more than gold, such as our youthfulness, our minds, our bodies and our relationships. Yet, this essay does not intend to condone going down the path and mind set of nihilistic doom and gloom. Instead, we should learn to appreciate what we have now and learn to use the utmost of what limited time we do have to maximise our happiness and general well-being. Whether that may be spending time with friends and family or exercising is ultimately our decision alone and no one else's.
Computer games have often been the subject of intense debate since its inception. Some have argued on behalf of computer while others demonise it as the bane of all evil. The debate about computer games hinge on its benefits and its downsides. Though there are downsides to all activities, the pros indisputably outweigh the cons of playing computer games. Thus, the statement of playing computer games is beneficial to everyone is rather contentious. In my humble opinion I am in full agreement with the statement. Playing computer games provides a multitude of benefits to everyone. Among the benefits of playing computer games include improved eye-hand coordination, strategic and problem-solving skills, as well as improved neuroplasticity. Computer Games : a boon or bane The importance of eye-hand coordination is often overlooked by many. It allows a person to better control their movements and react quickly to possible dangers. Computer games help train one’s brain to better connect the visual cortex and motor cortex. The ability to quickly identify and react to prompts in game are key to winning. First person shooters are games that require the most attention from the player to quickly react to enemies and targets. Unlike other genres of games, first person shooters are not passive games and requiring continuous focus from the player. These types of games are best to improve eye-hand coordination. The importance of eye-hand coordination maybe overlooked due to the mundane pace of life. However, without good eye-hand coordination many ills may befall a person. A staple example of the consequences of poor eye-hand coordination are car accidents. Many of the elderly get into car accidents due to slow reaction time and poor attention. These kinds of issues can easily be overcome by a healthy dose of computer games. Hence, It is best recommended for everyone to play computer games as to sharpen one’s eye-hand coordination. Problem solving skills are often sought trait among the working class and administration. Politicians, leaders, businessmen, blue-collar and white-collar workers require good problem-solving skills. On a day-to-day basis, we face a variety of problems from the smallest to the largest. Playing computer games help train a person’s problem-solving skills. Planning the finances for your company, building something for your school project or getting out of trouble requires excellent problemsolving. Games often have deep and intricate puzzles requiring a person to think outside the box and find creative and ingenious solutions. Some games force players to grapple with a large amount of information to analyse. This improves a person’s ability to absorb, analyse and extract valuable information more easily. Computer games in the genre of puzzle solving are great for those keen to hone one’s problem-solving skills. Games such as Tetris, multi-dimensional chess, and adventure games help condition the brain to be better problem solvers. Whether you are young or old playing puzzle games on the computer gives more depth compared to playing traditional puzzle games. In essence, playing computer games is beneficial to everyone as it can improve their problem-solving skills. Lastly, playing computer games improve neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the ability for a person’s brain to adapt quickly and smoothly between different actions. Most computer games rely on players ability to quickly switch between tasks and adapt new situations quickly. The ability to multitask and adapt to changing environment is dependent on neuroplasticity. The importance of neuroplasticity cannot be overstated. Improving neuroplasticity requires one to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. First person shooter train players navigation skills, reflexes, and strategic planning at the same time. An added benefit to playing first person shooters is the ability to rotate space in your head. This seemingly irrelevant skill allows people to have spatial awareness. This unassuming skill is extremely important in our daily life. All these tasks that are being carried out train the brain to be more plastic and adaptable. Neuroplasticity is crucial for the elderly as it can delay or prevent early onset Alzheimer’s disease. By keeping their brains more active it will prevent degeneration of neural tissue. To put it simply, playing computer games improves a person’s neuroplasticity and thus their brain health. In summary, computer games provide a multitude of benefits to those who play them. The benefits such as improved eye-hand coordination, improved problem-solving skills, and promoting neuroplasticity have definitely outweighed its shortcomings if one practises self-discipline. Adults, children and even the elderly stand to gain a lot from playing computer games. Far from being the source of all ills many would like to believe it as a boon to society. However, playing computer games is not all sunshine and rainbows. Everything should be done in moderation as the saying goes ‘Too much of anything is good for nothing’. The environment, home to all living organisms in this world, faces drastic changes in line with the continuous modernisation of planet Earth, whether from economic, social or political aspects. Transformations bring about advantages and disadvantages, from which detriments stand out in their daunting forms. Currently, the environment is facing consequences imposed by human exploitations carried out in an endless pursuit towards economic development and achievements, such as in the industrial and agricultural sectors. The air breathes irritating pollutants, permeates the environment with excessive heat in a notorious phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect. Water in oceans and rivers flow with putrid and pungent domestic and industrial wastes, putting the lives of aquatic organisms in danger and causing harm to the health of human consumers in the form of diseases. The modern world faces climate change, from unpredictable weather patterns to global warming. Earth is ill and is setting off alarms through the deteriorating environment. Following a series of environmental ramifications, countless efforts are being made to increase public awareness towards the pressing issues faced by the environment. Efforts are seen to be made by the government such as through law enforcement and education, education in which syllabi are adjusted to be environment-oriented, and where values such as eco-friendliness are inculcated in the minds of students. This can be seen, for instance, when students are introduced on a large scale to the 6 R principles of waste management, namely Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Repair; Communities can be seen working as units to clean and beautify the environment. In short, the involvement of every individual in the preservation and conservation of the environment is taken into consideration. Though what is most eye-catching in this modern era is the role of social media in raising awareness towards environmental issues, particularly among Generation Z individuals who make up a large fraction of social media users. Knowledge and awareness towards our environment spread like wildfire through intricate infographics, informative videos and written posts. Furthermore, social media applications such as Facebook and Instagram have launched "sharing" and "reposting" mechanisms from which environment-related posts can be widely shared by social media users, whether privately to their friends and relatives or publicly to their followers. The existence of social media, with a wide expanse, has made the environment a viral and endless topic among generations of users, in other words, a constant talk of the globe. In a nutshell, public awareness towards environmental issues is being raised in a considerably successful manner. Environmental Awareness Without A Cause Tan Kerr Xi 6A UM1
However, despite the success in raising awareness such as through social media, countless disappointing situations related to daily individual habits and behaviours are witnessed. Social media users are seen to share posts related to environmental issues, only to turn around as traitors by making or repeating the mistakes that they seem to "strive" to put an end to behind their screens. Individuals are seen to speak out against deforestation and to promote the replanting of trees, done, for instance, by sharing a post which is worth one tree planted, only to waste countless white papers and tissue papers as soon as they did so; Social media users are always spotted advocating their followers about the prevention of environmental pollutions, only to leave the virtual world and to exacerbate environmental pollutions such as by smoking a cigarette in open air and dumping rubbish into the river instead of prepared garbage bins. In other words, awareness is widely raised, while leaving out care and compassion. Instead, negligence is let loose to further undermine the environment. Words are spoken, actions are carried out virtually by individuals, by "sharing" or "reposting", while neglecting concrete practices in reality. Dedication towards environmental causes, as exhibited through social media platforms, is reduced to mere veneers concealing ignorance and ruthlessness towards the aching environment. False diligence in the form of words acts as a replacement for actual actions that should be carried out to protect the environment. In short, words simply speak louder than actions. To make matters worse, the topic "environment" is constantly used as a bait by countless individuals to garner fame and attention, craved publicity, without a slight sincerity behind their "impactful" words. Meanwhile, others jump on the bandwagon, in a ride to act as citizens who show "deep knowledge and concern" towards the environment through social media platforms, while in reality they are blind, out of ignorance, towards the extent by which the environment faces damage. With that, environmental approaches are no longer a pursuit towards what is right. Instead, they are defined as a form of trend to be kept up to date with. Consequently, environment-related actions are carried out with a blind awareness, an awareness gained through prolonged exposure towards ongoing issues faced by the environment, yet blinded by an oblivion towards the real intention behind these actions, that is, to protect and save the environment; an awareness devoid of care and compassion towards the environment, thereby stripped off of its clarity.
The environment, home to each and every one of us, acts as our vital source of life. It is our responsibility to protect the environment which sustains us as soon as we set foot upon Earth. It is a responsibility to be carried out by us humans, not just out of obligation, or out of blind compliance towards the latest trends, but with care and compassion towards the environment which shelters us. The environment, our home, should not be taken as a token of exploitation. Instead, it should be accepted as a gift of appreciation, loved and cared for unconditionally. Every individual plays an important role in the preservation and conservation of the environment. In fact, all we need is a little faith, sincerity, and most importantly, a kind heart. The welfare of the environment is ensured by the goodness in people. After all, instead of, for instance, giving up all hope in a pursuit of a new habitat, why not save Earth, our home, while it is still not too late? Designed by Joann Mok Jin Yuan (6A UUM)

Little did we know that we were to bid farewell to the youthful years of the past as we are approaching full adulthood presently. Memories of the past are fading : the beautiful blue sky the green, green grass of our familiar surrounding , the morning fresh dew and lots of beautiful scenes . If time could stand still at a particular point in the past, I would be very appreciative of it. Nevertheless, reminiscing the past often reminds me of how time flies in the wink of an eye. Every single moment of our adolescence will soon be carved into memories. Moments of joy, despair, rebellion, laughter and tears, will soon be shaped into memories, just memories.
The paragraph above is about appreciating our life. It points out the fact that every living thing on earth, including humans is going to die one day. Thus, we have to do something meaningful in our lives and contribute something to society. People might forget our existence on earth as time passes, but we should do our best to make our life successful because we know who we are. Tick Tok Tick Tok, time is running out, everything starts now. Designed By : Rita Lee Ziting (6R UPM )
Looking back on the past, we will find that the most important things in our life including love, health, family, friendship and appearance have undergone subtle changes over time.
