Special Pipe Tobacco

Order period for all special pipe tobaccos are 2 weeks.

Carefully treated and blended tobaccos with flavour nuances not available in other tobacco
products. Most special tobaccos are blends of air-cured Burley and Virginia tobaccos enhanced by
spicy tobaccos, among them Latakia and Perique. Sweeteners and flavourings are added to create
an aromatic flavour. Special tobaccos can be smoked as is or can be used to blend with other
tobaccos – specially made for the connoisseur. Van Erkoms Tobaccos can also mix and produce any
special pipe tobacco blends to satisfy individual consumer needs.

Cigarette Tobacco (RYO)

Roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco, sometimes referred to as hand-rolling tobacco or fine cut, is a mixture
of Burley, Virginia and air-cured tobaccos. Roll your own tobacco became the choice of the most
cost-conscious smokers, or people who actually enjoyed the ritual of making their own cigarettes.
Hand-rolled cigarettes, also called rollies, roll-ups or simply rolls, give smokers the ability to roll
cigarettes of any diameter, thereby varying the strength of the cigarette. Rolling your own cigarette
is a strong expression of individualism and free-thinking – even of non-conformism. Our wide range

Tobacconist

Additives:
Substances other than tobacco in its various forms added to tobacco products. They are usually
casings or flavourings, which are added either to make a positive contribution to the taste or
aroma of the product. They may be either natural or artificial.

Air-curing:
Natural drying process applied to most smoking tobaccos.

Aroma:
The organoleptic characteristic of tobacco or smoke as perceived by the sense of smell.

Blending:
The mixing of different types of tobacco according to precise recipes to produce a characteristic,
homogenous blend.

Burley:
Burley tobaccos are light to light brown in colour with a special aroma, reminiscent of tobacco.

Casing:
A variety of ingredients such as sugars, humectants and aromatic substances applied to tobacco
before cutting.

Cavendish:
A type of dark/black pipe tobacco similar to flake-cut (see below). Tobacco is pressed under
steam to form firm blocks and to ferment under control.

Coarse-cut:
Type of pipe tobacco with large fibres.

Cut rag (also rag):
Cut tobacco which has been blended, normally cased and cut prior to drying.

Fermentation:
The treatment of dark air-cured and oriental tobaccos after curing.

Fine-cut:
Smoking tobacco used for roll-your-own cigarettes and even pipe tobacco.

Fire-curing:
Method of curing tobacco which involves exposing the leaf to the smoke of open fires. The
aromatic substances contained in the latter are absorbed by the tobacco, giving it a characteristic
flavour.

Flake-cut:
Type of pipe tobacco produced by pressing cased blends together to form a cake and then
cutting it, firstly into bars and then once more into small, roughly rectangular pieces.

Flavour:
General term for a perfume, etc. added to tobacco after cutting to produce a specific taste.

Flavouring:
The process by which a tobacco blend or product acquires a distinctive taste through the use of
aromatic substances, which may be applied before or after cutting.

Flue-curing:
Method of curing particularly used with Virginia tobaccos, using barns.

Half zware:
Fine-cut tobacco mixture consisting of fire-cured tobaccos and flue-cured tobaccos.

Latakia:
Small-leaved oriental tobacco produced in Syria. Fumigated over open fires of green wood to
give the tobaccos a distinctive spicy aroma.

Mentholated snuff:
Snuff (i.e taken through the nose) which has been flavoured with menthol.

Mildness:
Subjective concept used particularly in advertising to denote the taste and strength of a tobacco
or tobacco product as perceived during smoking.

Moist snuff (also wet snuff):
Type of snuff with a higher moisture content than dry snuff and which is normally consumed in
the mouth rather than through the nose.

Oriental tobacco:
A variety of tobacco with relatively small leaves.

Perique:
Special variety of tobacco prepared by a unique process in which it is severely fermented while
still green and in the course of drying out.

Plug cut:
Thin slices of compressed tobacco. Before use it is crumbled between the fingers to loosen the
individual fibres.

Ready-rubbed:
Plug tobacco which has been prepared for smoking by cutting thin slices from a tobacco cake and
then loosening these into flakes.

Scrap:
Loose, whole, or broken leaves reduced to small pieces by any process, arises from the handling
of tobacco.
Shag:
Fast-burning, medium to wide fine-cut tobacco suitable for use in pipes with small bowls and roll-
your-own cigarettes.
Snuff:
Finely-ground, cased tobacco mixture which may either be inhaled through the nose or placed
between cheek and gum and sucked (wet or moist snuff, dry snuff).
Sun-curing:
Method of curing by suspending leaves in full sunlight.
Threshing:
The removal of the midrib and side vein of tobacco leaves by mechanical means.
Virginia tobacco:
Collective name for certain sorts of tobacco originating in what is now the state of Virginia. These
tobaccos can, depending on the intended use, be flue-, fire- or air-cured.
