2016/2017 SEASON
THE HOME OF PROFESSIONAL ARTS AT CAL STATE LA

A MESSAGE FROM
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the 2016/2017
season at the Luckman Fine Arts
Complex at Cal State LA! It is with
tremendous pride that I bring you
the next chapter in our portfolio
of monumental programming.
With artists coming from around
the corner and around the world,
and with seventeen countries
represented, the diversity and caliber
of our offerings have never been
more profound.
Being an integral part of the community is important to us. Your
support validates what is sometimes forgotten: that the arts
enrich life in ways that nothing else can. Art has the power to
bring us closer together, to question ourselves and our world, and
to ignite change and action. Its universal language overcomes
obstacles and is instantly understood and absorbed.
I am confident that you will find something to cherish in our
diverse season and that along the way you will discover yourself
in the arts.
The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA is a shining
treasure in Los Angeles and I am proud to continue its tradition
of excellence.
Enjoy the season!

Wendy A. Baker

More than two decades ago, American folk
singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin recorded a
cover of Steve Earle’s Someday. Years later,
following her rise to success that included a
Grammy award and the release of her number
one single Sunny Came Home, and his rock,
country and folk singer-songwriter career, the
two folk stars reveal an unparalleled creative
partnership.

With their new album release, “Colvin & Earle,”
this bluesy and folk cohesive duo capture a
rollicking slice of folk-gospel working its way
from Egypt to Ferguson, MO. Deriving from
personal experiences, the artist’s songs are
raw and lurch through moments of sorrow
and longing, leaving feelings of nostalgia and
revelation with their audiences.

celebration of four visionary icons of music
all born in the same year: Dizzy Gillespie, Ella
Fitzgerald, Mongo Santamaria, and Thelonious
Monk.

Jazz 100 showcases both the dynamic individual
artist of each icon and the powerful unifying
thread between them, which helped shape and
inform the evolution of jazz and modern jazz as
we recognize it.

An ensemble directed by Danilo Pérez, a
young keyboard player with Drizzy, starring
four contemporary greats including Chris
Potter (saxophone, woodwinds), Avishai Cohen
(trumpet), Wycleffe Gordon (trombone, vocals),
Lizz Wright (vocals), and a talented rhythm
section pay homage to the giants of jazz history

Inspired by epic spectacles like Riverdance,
Rockin’ Road To Dublin’s renowned ensemble
is reviving the classic art form to create a new
Irish show with a contemporary feel and a broad
appeal. Choreographer and lead male Scott
Doherty (Riverdance & Lord of the Dance) has
teamed up with veteran Celtic rocker Chris
Smith to produce an exciting fusion of music,
movement and culture that has never been
done before. RRTD is a breathtaking display of
classic Irish tunes accented by rock ‘n’ roll riffs,
electrifying dancers and a dynamic light show.
Enjoy the thrilling sights and sounds as daring
performers execute rapid-fire leaps, twirls and
footwork, and nimble fiddlers square off with
driving electric guitar chords and pulse-pounding
drum beats. Fans say, “Rockin’ Road to Dublin
not only combines Riverdance and Lord of the

ODC Dance is a groundbreaking contemporary
arts institution with longstanding roots in the
San Francisco community. The organization was
formed by Brenda Way in 1971 as a collective of
artists at Oberlin College in Ohio where the name
ODC (Oberlin Dance Collective) originates.

Adventure, a certain irreverence, and the
joy of moving were key ingredients to the
core philosophy of our founding members. In
1976, the sixteen dancers, painters, writers,
photographers and musicians of the collective
bid farewell to Ohio, piled into a big yellow bus
and came west to San Francisco to find a context
for their artistic vision and social ideals.

Rodriguez began his career in the 60s, but
without any enthusiastic response, he was
ultimately let go by his label and forced to
work outside the music industry. Unbeknownst
to him, and to the rest of the world, his songs
became the inspiration for millions struggling
against apartheid in South Africa, where he was
regarded as a superstar.

Rodriguez became the subject of the Oscar-
winning documentary Searching for Sugar
Man, which depicts the story of the hunt to
learn the truth behind his rumored death and
disappearance in the late 1970’s. With his new-
found celebrity status, Rodriguez has been a
headliner at every major festival in the world
and has finally found commercial success for the
album he produced nearly four decades ago.

Rodriguez returns to the Luckman his classic hits
and the songs that shaped his fascinating life.

The first survey exhibition of Los Angeles-
based artist Kara Tanaka. Spanning from
2005-2011, the exhibit will feature a
cross section of Tanaka’s work, which
has often explored the central themes of
transcendence through her own aesthetic
synthesis that merges the primitive
with the futuristic. Tanaka’s work often
reveals the shared relationship between
different forms of religious mysticism and
the metaphysical undertones of our own
technological progress.

Over the past 30 years, much of Yonemoto’s
work has examined the unreality of the
American media landscape that distorts and
manipulates our understandings of important
and shared issues such as class and race. Making
it’s Los Angeles debut, The End Of The World
At The Edge Of The Earth, is Yonemoto’s most
recent video that investigates and questions
this unreality, where media can be used to
perforate it’s own infinite screen allowing a
little reality to creep through.
