i The DENR-PENRO Marinduque proudly presents this 2019 ENR Information and Statistics. This year’s theme “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation” highlights the importance of availability of relevant and reliable statistical data as key inputs to effective planning, management and policy-making for sustainable development of our environment and remaining natural resources as the world is experiencing a digital revolution. The ENR Information and Statistics has been prepared annually by this Office to provide basic and updated statistical data information on Environment and Natural Resources in Marinduque province. Much of the data were obtained from the various sectors of Forestry, Lands, Environment, Protected Areas, Wildlife, Coastal and Marine, Research, Administrative and Support Services. Likewise, other data were generated from local government units, other government agencies, academe, non-government organizations and civic groups. The reliability of data depend on how the data from various entities/organizations are collected, processed, stored, documented and disseminated. We hope that this ENR Information and Statistics will convey to our stakeholders from the private sectors, the academe, civil society, and the government the information and data as basis for the policies we have implemented as well as showcase the extent of our dedication to the fulfillment of our mandate. 2019 ENR Information & Statistics © DENR - PENRO Marinduque 2019 ENR Statistics & Information DENR PENRO Marinduque 1 Marinduque is an island province in the Philippines located in Southwestern Tagalog Region formerly designated as MIMAROPA Region. It lies between Tayabas Bay to the north and Sibuyan Sea to the south. It is also west of the Bondoc Peninsula of Quezon province, east of Mindoro Island and north of the island province of Romblon. On February 21, 1920, an act 2280 was passed by the Philippine Congress reestablishing the island of Marinduque as a separate province after years of being part of other provinces. It is known as the “Heart of the Philippines” in connection of its heart shape and also called as the “Geodetic Center of the Philippines” because of the geodetic marker in the island province, the Luzon Datum of 1911 established by United States Coast and Geodetic Survey (USCGS). A diorite rock with a hole on its center and marks the reference of all geodetic, hydrographic, and topographic surveys in the country. The island province consists of six municipalities namely: Boac, Gasan, Buenavista, Torrijos, Santa Cruz, and Mogpog. Boac is the capital of Marinduque. Gasan is considered as one of the cleanest and greenest municipality and covers a forest reserve in the eastern part of it. It is also the gateway to the island of Mindoro. Buenavista on the other hand, is the smallest of the six municipalities and was named such because of the "good view" of the Tablas Strait and offshore islands. Torrijos is deemed to be the Summer Capital of the province and known for its locally-grown strawberries. Santa Cruz is the largest of all the six municipalities both in land area and population. While Mogpog is the primary gateway of the province through Balanacan port and known as the original home of the Moriones Lenten Rites and Kangga Festival. Up to present, Marinduque was considered as the second most peaceful province in the Philippines due to its low crime rate statistics by the Philippine National Police and Philippine Security.
