Location of Jinja: Jinja lies in southeastern
Uganda, approximately 54 miles (87 km), by road, east of
Kampala. (One and half hour drive from Kampala). The
town is located at the Northern end and shore of Lake Vic-
toria, near to the source of the Nile River. It covers an area
of approximately 28 square km. It borders Iganga and Kam-
uli in the North, Mukono in the south west, Kayunga in the
west, Mayuge in the East and Lake Victoria in the south. The
nearby Owen Falls Dam regulates the flow of the White Nile
and generates electricity. Jinja town is the largest metropol-
itan area in Jinja District with an estimated population of
72,931 according to the 2014 population census, and is con-
sidered the capital of Busoga Kingdom. The entire District
of Jinja has 413,937 people, 206709 of which are females and
207,287 are male. Considered Uganda’s second largest town,
Jinja is a very pleasant and relaxed place to explore.
History that you need to know about
Jinja: Before 1906, Jinja was a fishing village that benefited
from being located on long-distance trade routes. The origin
of the name “Jinja” comes from the language of the two peo-
ples (the Baganda and the Basoga) that lived on either side
of River Nile. In both languages “Jinja” means “Rock”. In
most of Africa, rivers like the Nile hindered migration, this
explains the ethnic boundaries along the Nile as one moves
www.advancedtours.ug 07
north from the river’s source on the northern shores of Lake
Victoria. In 1906, the British colonial governor , Hesketh
Bell ,under the Uganda town ship Ordinance proclaimed
Jinja a Township , having grown from a fishing village,
Worth mentioning is the fact that on the 26th of June
2006 Jinja turned 100 years as a Town. It is now being
prepared to obtain a city status, hopefully soon.
However the area around Jinja was one place where the riv-
er could be breached due to the large rocks near the Ripon
Falls. Here, on either bank of the river, were large flat rocks
where small boats could be launched to cross the river. These
rock formations were also accredited with providing a natu-
ral moderator for the water flow out of Lake Victoria. For the
original local inhabitants, the location was a crossing point,
for trade, migration and as a fishing post.
This might explain why, despite this barrier, the two tribes
of Baganda and Basoga have very similar languages, and the
more powerful Baganda had an enormous influence on the
Basoga. The area was called the ‘Place of Rocks’ or ‘The Place
of Flat Rocks’. The word for stones or rocks in the language of
the Baganda is ‘Ejjinja (Plural Amayinja), and in the Basoga
dialect this became Edinda. The British used this reference to
name the town they established - “Jinja”
In 1954, with the building of the Owen Falls Dam, (later re-
named Nalubaale Power Station) the Ripon falls were sub-
merged. Most of the ‘Flat Rocks’ that gave the area its name
Tour Jinja Uganda 08
disappeared under the water as well. However a description
of what the area looked like can be found in the notes of
John Hanning Speke, the first European to lay eyes on the
Source of the Nile:
“Though beautiful, the scene was not exactly what I expect-
ed, for the broad surface of
the lake was shut out from
view by a spur of hill, and
the falls, about twelve feet
deep and four to five hun-
dred feet broad, were bro-
ken by rocks; still it was a
sight that attracted one to
it for hours.
The roar of the waters, the
thousands of passenger
fish leaping at the falls with
all their might, the fisher-
men coming out in boats,
and taking post on all the rocks with rod and hook, hippo-
potami and crocodiles lying sleepily on the water, the ferry
at work above the falls, and cattle driven down to drink at
the margin of the lake, made in all, with the pretty nature
of the country—small grassy-topped hills, with trees in the
intervening valleys and on the lower slopes—as interesting a
picture as one could wish to see.”
CLIMATE: Jinja enjoys a pleasant climate with tem-
perature varying between 200c and 300c. Average rain is ap-
proximately 112.5 centimeter .The portion of Nile basin
lying in Uganda experiences an equatorial type of climate
with two dry and two rainy seasons every year. March to May
is the rainy period with April receiving the highest rains. The
September to November period constitutes the second rainy
season, while December to February and June to August are
the dry period. Although it rains heavily during the rainy
seasons, the sun still comes out for at least a few hours.
Tourists can always enjoy the nice and warm weather. The
temperature in the rainy season goes up to 23 degrees Celsi-

us. The dry season brings a lot of sunshine and hot tempera-
tures which go up to 36 degrees Celsius. The view of the Nile
and nature around during the dry seasons is just magnificent
and amazing.

Bring sun protection. Jinja is on 1100m above sea level therefore
the sun is very strong especially during the dry season. Refer to the
climate section for a description of the seasons.
Humble yourself for a short prayer: Many Ugandans pray before a
meal or any form of meetings. Pause a little for your hosts to lead the
way before you plunge into your meal.
Waving with an open hand means saying hello or goodbye. Occa-
sionally wave to people especially the children as this makes them
happy and part of the society.)
Tips are generally allowed. The amount depends on your own re-
sources and how you feel about the services offered. There is nothing
like 5% or 10% from the overall bill. At the same time if you do not
provide a tip it is not considered as offence.
Do negotiate either you are dealing with bodaboda (motorbike-taxi),
bus taxi drivers or with shopkeepers. There are no standard prices in
the shops or craft shops. Only supermarkets do have standard prices.
Eating and receiving objects: The right hand is always preferred
when eating with one hand or when giving and receiving objects. Its
however not offensive to use the left hand.
Don’ts
Do not take photos at the Owen falls Dam/bridge which leads to Jinja.
If you take photos, be aware that solders will question you.
Do not insist on reaching prohibited/restricted areas especially at the
banks of the river, it is for your own safety. Some of these places
are slippery and might cost your life therefore take great care as you
enjoy sightseeing.
Do not point at people. Pointing at people with a forefinger is consid-
ered impolite; instead, one should communicate without appearing
impolite.
Public display of affection is considered inappropriate. People who
kiss in public are considered to be immoral.
Do not litter rubbish, paper or any unwanted materials anywhere
along the town streets or in the River or Lake rather look for a des-
ignated dumping place for safe disposal. Let’s all together keep our
environment clean and pleasing for all of us.

Local Attraction to lookout for
while in Jinja
Jinja is endowed with numerous magnificent Local attrac-
tions both natural and artificial that your eyes can’t miss
looking at. These attractions have birthed a number of ac-
tivities to the pleasure of both the locals and tourists. These
attractions include;
Natural attractions
Source of the Nile River: Lake Victoria was first
sighted by a European British explorer John Hannington
Speke in 1858. It’s indeed this Lake that gives birth to the
world’s longest river at one point in Jinja.
Witness the mighty Nile River as it starts its long way into the
Mediterranean Sea. With an estimated length of almost 6700
km the Nile is the longest river in the world. The White Nile
rises in Lake Victoria in Uganda. The Nile leaves this largest
lake of Africa and world’s largest Tropical Lake at Ripon Falls
near Jinja in Uganda.
After passing through the famous Murchison Falls, the river
flows into Lake Albert. From here the river is known as the
Albert Nile and is the last part of the river on Ugandan terri-
tory. Via South Sudan the White Nile enters Sudan.

Near the capital Khartoum the White Nile meets the Blue
Nile. This tributary begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia and
flows into Sudan from the southeast. The northern section
of the river flows almost entirely through a desert into Egypt.
This country has depended on the river since ancient times.
Most of the population and cities of Egypt are situated along
the Nile and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of An-
cient Egypt are found along the banks of the river. Through
a large delta the Nile ends into the Mediterranean Sea. The
mighty waters of the Nile flow at an average volume of 300
million cubic meters per day passing in the course of a 3
month journey.
Jinja municipal council charges visitors to the source of the
Nile entry fees which is revenue to the council but also the
same money is used to keep the area at the source of the
River clean and tidy otherwise the thousands of people who
visit the place would render it non visit able. Below are the
charges for your proper planning.

White-water rapids from grade 1 to 5 along
the mighty River Nile, these rapids can be sighted right away
as you cross the river at the Owen falls bridge. The Nile has
the most thunderous waterfalls with a spectacular surround-
ing landscape that gives you a relaxing and claiming experi-
ence as you watch and listen to the Nile waters crushing on
rocks downstream. It is these rapids and waterfalls that have
come to characterize River Nile as the river of excitement,
adventure and joy. The first spectacular rapids of the Nile can
be seen right after the Heaven River lodge. These rapids form
the starting point for your rafting experience.
Birds and small animals:
For those of you who love bird watching, Jinja is a per-
fect spot for you as it has a number of rear bird species
that can be spotted all along the River floating and div-
ing in the water to grab fish. These include the Shoe bill,
Kingfisher, fish eagle etc. Small animals and calabash
monkeys, velvet monkeys, red tailed monkeys, and the
Nile monitor lizard can also be seen along the Nile.

“Uganda was voted the Best Tour-
ism Destination for 2012 and was
declared Africa’s preferred Bird-
ing Destination in October 2012
after Africa Bird Club voted two
of Uganda’s birding sites among
the top 10 birders’ destinations
in Africa. Bwindi Impenetrable
National Park was actually voted the best birding site in Af-
rica with Murchison Falls National Park coming in at ninth.
With over 1050 bird species within its borders, Uganda sits
comfortably among the best birding destinations in the
whole world.
Busoga sub region is one of the few areas of the country
which is endowed with a variety of wild birds like the Shoe
bill stork, Giant king fisher, Blue and Ross’s turaco, a variety
of herons, Parrots both grey and brown, etc. Other wildlife
includes velvet monkeys, red tailed monkeys, and the Nile
monitor lizard.
Most of the settlers of Busoga are typically farmers and the
change in climate of the area greatly affects them both so-
cially and economically thus poor standards of living in the
sub region.
Due to high levels of deforestation and land fragmentation,
Busoga Birds Conservation Trust chose to develop
avis Tourism in busoga sub region to help them (farmers) di-
versify their economy or else serve as a supplement on their
income as well as protecting the birds and their habitats by
creating awareness in communities and schools.
Busoga Birds Conservation Trust (BBCT) is a nature conser-
vation and Community Based Organization (CBO) found-

ed in 2005, to emphasize conservation of birds which are
not covered by Uganda Wildlife Authority. This is done by
teaching the local communities the basics of birding and na-
ture conservation issues in a friendly manner. (The heart of
conservation is the appreciation of nature and the desire to
preserve it.) The BBCT also promote Eco-tourism/Commu-
nity tourism by training local site guides. This helps many
youth to become self sustaining or support their education
programs. Some activities involved include tree planting, na-
ture walks, study tours, research and awareness creation. The
vision for BBCT is Bridging the gap between man and nature
for biodiversity conservation.
We also organize tours and offer guiding services to tourists
around Busoga and other areas. (Source of the Nile, Igenge
Palace, Itanda falls, Mpumwiire Hill, Kagulu Hill). The mon-
ey collected from these services is shared among the artisan,
guides and the Trust to sustain itself ”-Article by Godfrey

Natural Vegetation: As you cruise, sail or float
downstream the Nile, you will not only notice abundant nat-
ural vegetation still untouched but also many types of birds,
lizards, insects, fish, which have their habitants at the source
and along the Nile River.
www.advancedtours.ug 19
All of that is compounded with the unforgettable sound of
the nature, as the boat floats along the river. Further down-
stream, is the magnificent, spectacular and most powerful
water fall, “the Murchison falls” Here, the entire river faces a
narrow passage of 6 meters wide and presents an impressive
demonstration of power as the swirling waters overcome a
height difference of almost 43 meters. At this point, the Nile
River bisects Murchison national park and here is plenty of
wild life including the big five in East Africa.
View of the scenery at the source of the Nile
Kagulu Rock: For those of you who love hiking,
Kagulu rock is your ultimate destination. Located 130km
from Jinja town, the rock raises to amazingly 3,600ft above
sea level. It provides hikers with a rewarding spectacular ea-
gle eye views of the surrounding areas and for some one rea-
son you might be laid to think that you are the commander
–in –chief of the armed forces but this does not come easy
as the rock offers you a remarkably unforgettable challenge.
Kagulu rock is not only famous for the challenge it offers to
those who dare climbing it but also it plays a very impor-
tant role in as far as Busoga and Bunyoro Kingdoms are con-
cerned. It is believed to have been the first migration and
settlement center for the Basoga besides being a place where
Bunyoro Kings would spend leisure time.

While at Kagulu rock, it’s obvious that you will see Lake Kyo-
ga as it spreads across the horizons, plenty of animal and
bird life including thousands of beetles, bats, wasps, lizards
and other reptiles, hiking goats and an amazingly spectacu-
lar view of the surround. It takes between 2 to 3 hrs to hike
Kagulu but plenty of energy and drinking water.

Artificial attractions
There are numerous artificial attractions however the more
notable ones are;
Owen Falls and Bujagali Dams: The
Owen Falls Dam is the ultimate gateway to Jinja town. To-
gether with Bujagali power Dam are the Major sources of
electricity to the country. These two are places worth a visit.
Remember not to take photos at any of these dams without
permission as it is prohibited to do so.

Speke Monument: This place marks the point
where John Hannington Speke, the first European to see the
source of the Nile stood to see the Source of the world’s long-
est river. The view of the source of the Nile River at this point
is really magnificent and eye catching in that you clearly see
the Nile waters being divorced by Lake Victoria never to
meet ever again.

Mahatma Ghandhi Monument: Mr.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi whose ashes were poured
in the longest River in the world in accordance to his Will
was born in the state of Gurajat, India on 2nd October 1869
and was shot dead on 30th January 1948 on his way to at-
tend a prayer meeting. His death was mourned all over the
world. He was perceived by majority as a peace liking man
who spread the gospel of equality for all humans. He further
taught people to love and tolerate each other. After his death,
some of his ashes were immersed in the Nile waters at ap-
point in Jinja and his statue has been raised at this point. It
is being taken care of by bank of Baroda. Find time and visit
this spiritual place behind a legendary man.

Swaminarayan Hindu temple: The
main Hindu temple is situated on the way to the show
ground from Jinja town and this temple is a lovely build-
ing. It was built by a rich Indian man in Jinja after the
70s. Jinja today still has a large Indian population. Make it
appoint to move around this temple too.
Vibrant culture and Busoga Kingdom:
All people live in cultural harmony and freely display
their rich cultural heritages and traditional celebra-
tions. The Basoga tribe is the largest in the munic-
ipality under the Busoga kingdom headed by the
traditional king with the title of kyabazinga . There
are eleven clans in the Busoga kingdom and the King-
dom covers eight districts including Jinja. Basically, the
kingdom is a cultural institution that promotes popu-
lar participation and unity among its people (Busoga),
through cultural and developmental programs for the
improved livelihood of the people. It strives for a united
people of Busoga, who enjoy economic, social and cul-
tural prosperity. It also continues to enhance, revamp
and pave the way for an efficient institutional and man-
agement system for the Kyabazinga kingship.

Mutai cultural centre: At Mutai cultural
centre, you will be taught and taken through how a typical
ancient musoga lived and behaved. This centre is not only
aimed at preserving the Basoga culture and tradition but
also revamping the same culture into the present day mod-
ern Basoga. While here, you will be told how the ancient
Basoga would welcome visitors, how they would build their
houses, preserve and store food and how they would prepare
their meals. A tour to Mutai cultural centre would leave you
wondering on how brilliant these people were.
Bishop Hannington Monument: This
site found in Kyando- mayuge holds significant importance
to the introduction of protestant faith in Uganda. It is at this
site that the British Evangelist Bishop, James Hannington
lived and had his last breathe on October 29th 1885 together
with 48 of his servants. Avery touching and emotional story
about the travel, life and death of the Bishop can only be well
told while at this site with clear evidence of his torture rock,
murder rock, water well, sleeping and reading caves and his
teaching pulpit.

Cultural events worth to participate or seeing:
Introduction and Wedding ceremonies; Kwand-
hula or Kwanjula is an elaborate introduction ceremony of
a husband to the wife’s family, among the Basoga and Ba-
ganda, respectively, of Uganda. It is also considered to be a
cultural or traditional marriage. It is on this occasion that a
man pays bride price to the woman’s family. Everything done
on this occasion is purely traditional and African. Tourists
through their travel agents are always encouraged to attend
such functions for a clear understanding of culture among
Ugandans. The dancing, clothes worn and the food are such
interesting. Different tribes and Kingdoms do it differently.
After Introduction, couples go for marriage in accordance to
their religions. Marriage plays many roles in these societies
and it is considered to be a cardinal institution of social or-
ganization. It unites not just individuals but also families and
even clans. Marriage is conducted by religious leaders.
Traditional dances; these vary from tribe to
tribe and from kingdom to kingdom. If in any part of Ugan-
da, it is encouraged that you get to learn the different dancing
styles exhibited. In Jinja, you can learn the Kisoga dance, Ki-
ganda dance and the Kigisu dance.

Handmade craft: The curving, molding and
shaping among Africans is just amazing. Tourists are given
an opportunity to learn how to make different crafts using
purely local material. Among what you can get to learn is
rope making, weaving baskets and mats, necklaces, brick
making and construction of mad houses, paintings etc.
Necklaces made from paper Hand curved traditional
musical instruments
Singing in the churches: it is very common
that during each mass celebration, there is a choir in most
of the churches consisting village citizens, mostly ladies. The
songs are very lively and dances are also introduced at such
events.
Greetings: This is especially in the villages where very
common to see is the special way of greeting. Women kneel
in front of the elderly men or their husbands, or young girls
in front of the men. This is to show respect to them. Men
mostly greet by shaking hands or words however, between
young people or people of the same age the simple Jambo in
the Lusoga language is said. Jambo means Hello. Also wav-
ing is added to the greetings. Foreigners/visitors can greet in
their way, and it is widely acceptable in Uganda, but when
they use the local language while greetings it is very much
welcomed.

Traditional Kitchen/cooking:
Meals in Uganda are prepared mostly by women. In the
villages, food is eaten by hands in most cases. Women use
very traditional methods of preparing food. The traditional
Ugandan food is delicious and very tasty. Meals prepared in
the rural set up are considered more natural and healthier
as compared to the fast foods prepared in towns and urban
centers. Locally accessed materials are used in the prepara-
tion of food in rural areas whereas the situation is totally dif-
ferent in towns as there is always a limitation of such local
materials in towns.
Plans are underway for the construction of a Zoo
around the source of the Nile in Jinja. The zoo will be
the second in Uganda after the Uganda Wild Life Edu-
cation Centre in Entebbe, about 100 km away. There are
lots more attractions like industries which one can visit
but for now, this is just more than enough to guide you
on what to expect in Jinja.
With these attractions and lots more in place, Jinja reg-
isters thousands of travelers and tourists who come to
set an eye to these amazing features. As a result, a num-
ber of activities on and along the Nile have continued
to draw even larger numbers of visitors. These activities
among others include the following;

Source of the Nile Visit:
The elusive source of the Nile stood as one of the world’s
greatest geographi-
cal mysterious until
1863, when Speke
identified it as a
small waterfall flow-
ing northward out
of Lake Victoria.
Flanked today by the
city of Jinja, Speke’s
waterfall now lies
submerged beneath
the Owen falls dam, but a visit to this legendary spot remains
a moving and wondrous experience. The city’s golf club, mu-
nicipal gardens, craft centers at the source offer a variety of
recreational facilities for tourists and residents alike. One can
enjoy sailing on the Lake, swimming, golf and tennis. You
will not only watch the Nile as it begins its majestic journey
but also engage in surfing the rapids in a spectacular day long
white water rafting trip. Registered tour companies can help
you in arranging trips to the source of the Nile. Advanced

on either bank of the river were large flat rocks where small
boats could be launched to cross the river. These rock forma-
tions were also accredited with providing a natural modera-
tor for the water flow out of Lake Victoria. For the original

migration and as a fishing post. Recently, these rocks are sub-
merged because the Owen Falls dam downstream.
