some of the best places to camp in Jinja. The Haven River
Lodge is one of the best places to think of however camping
is ideal anywhere in Jinja depending on the camping mate-
rials that you have. Many places that offer accommodation
services now offer camping as another option to spend your
remarkable night.

Conference: Jinja offers all sorts of conference facil-

ities and services be it in-door/behind closed door or out-
door/open air conferences. For a
list of recommendable hotels/ven-
ues for closed door conferences,
please refer to the directory here
within however let’s put more em-
phasis on outdoor/open door con-
ferences.
“This is a whole new experience
and results from such conferenc-
es are amazing. I am not trying to

advocate for outdoor conferences but that is the under lying
truth! Such conferences provide even more remarkable re-
sults if they are held next to river Nile as participants’ minds
will always be a wake.

I remember such conference that I attended at the Haven
River Lodge. The Haven offers reasonable conferencing
packages for meetings and corporate retreats/functions.
They have the latest audio and video technology plus an
array of setups designed to meet your conferencing needs.
Their meeting/conferencing facilities are also ideal for sem-
inars, workshops and team building. I practically do re-
member everything as it was discussed in this confer-
ence which was a year ago! The cool and fresh air from
River Nile and the natural vegetation around would keep us
all fresh. We would use the breaks to play volleyball, tennis
or swing while others would choose to take picture in the
beautiful compound or visit the water falls just nearby. We
used our evenings for boat cruises and fishing experiences
and by the time the 5 days conference came to an end, each
one of us asked for an extra day around. What a memorable
experience this was!”-Experience by Patience Arinaitwe in

What you need to know

Driving; Driving allover Uganda is on the left except

when over taking. All drivers are required to carry a copy of a
valid driving permit. The law however allows 24-hours with-
in which a permit must be produced. Third-party insurance
is compulsory.

There are two types of roads in Uganda; tarmac and
Murom roads. The tarmac ones are well done and simple

to travel on while the Murom ones are much bumpy but fun
to drive or ride on.

Murom road in Uganda A section of a tarmac

The challenge is to drive during a rainy season on some mur-
ram roads. Basically when it rains heavily over few hours or
even one hour is enough to stop a normal transport on some
murram roads as the roads get slippery and muddy. In most

www.advancedtours.ug 53

cases murram roads are used by motor bikes as one of the
main source of transport. Be aware that heavy rains render
some murram roads difficult to travel on because of the mud
formed.

Speed limit within high population areas (cities, town and
trading centers with over 1000- people) is 50kph and below
depending on the intensity of people and 100kph on open
roads. Speed limit for heavy vehicles and public services ve-
hicles is 80kph. It is an offense to drink and drive, talk on
hand-held phone while driving and to drive without fixing
your seat belt. It is advised to consider sign posts and traf-
fic signs put on the roads. However, extra consciousness is
need as there might be no traffic signs in some precaution

ally areas. Your safety on the road is important and
it begins with you.

Left hand driving in Uganda
As a tourist you can rent a car by one of the car rental com-
pany. The best is to ask your travel agent in uganda bout that
possibility. Please remember you shouldn’t drink and drive.
If you are cought when drinking or having above 0% then
you could be fined or even take to the prison. Enjoy your
drive while in Uganda.

EDUCATION SERVICES: The district

has a total of 151 primary schools with 105 Government, 35
private and 11 community schools. For secondary schools,
the district has over 56 schools, 11 are government, 29 pri-
vate and 16 community.
There is one Teacher training college. There has been a newly
opened International school with Cambridge International
standards, Galaxy International School in Walukuba, Jinja.

Medical/health: The district has 36 Government

dispensaries (II), 13 health centres (III) at county, 4 health
centres (IV) at sub-district and 1 hospital. More so, it has
9 private/NGO dispensaries, 26 clinics and 3 health centres
(III) and 2 hospitals. Jinja Hospital with 443 beds, Kakira
Hospital with 100 beds.
The Administrative units in Uganda are; Village as the small-
er area, Then Parish (which combines the minimum of 2 vil-
lages), Sub-County (can have many Parishes), County with
a minimum of 2 sub-Counties, District which constitute
of counties and Region made up of a number of districts.
(There are 4 regions in Uganda: Central, East, West, North,
and South is Lake Victoria).
Like in any part of Uganda, visitors are advised to take Malar-
ia precautions. Either you can use the drugs against malaria
which you can get in any pharmaceutical shop in Uganda or
better is to take them with you from your own country. If you
need medical drugs, you can get advice from the pharmaceu-
tical store or from your doctor and any epidemiology center.
Moreover it is advised to sleep under the mosquito net, and
wear a long sleeved shirt and trousers in evening hours and

www.advancedtours.ug 55

Tour Jinja Uganda 56

at night to reduce on the possible mosquito bites. You can
also use the special cream against mosquitoes. Depending
on the place and conditions of accommodation, there could
be different precautions. In most hostels and hotels, they also
give you a special spray against mosquitoes and other insects.
It is advised to drink bottled water which is available through-
out the country, rather than tap water. Eating or drinking
should be done only in clean and safe places. There are a lot
of fruits on the market therefore it is encouraged to do the
basic hygienic practices before eating anything. Most first aid
drugs are available off the counter in pharmacies and drug
stores. Other drugs however, require a doctor’s prescription
note. Many clinics/health centers operate 24-hours. Most,
however, close at 5pm. In the event of an accident or serious
illness, call for an ambulance (see emergency contacts). Jinja
now has a newly opened and fully functional international
hospital.

Uganda lies on the Equator therefore the Sun in Uganda is
much more stronger than in most European countries, so
once you are exposed to the sun you should wear some pro-
tection like sun glasses, lotion or appropriate cloth including
hat or cap.

Markets:

Markets in Uganda especially in the villages, towns and cit-
ies are a very interesting experience. Food products and dif-
ferent varieties of products can be found in one segmented
market area.
Depending on the season, you can find there many nice
products including fruits: jackfruit, pineapple, mangoes, pa-
paya (called pawpaw), passion fruits, oranges, lemons; then
different type of beans, rice, potatoes (example: Irish pota-
toes and sweet potatoes), cassava, maize etc. Generally, it
is more fruits after rainy season, but throughout the whole
year, you can experience the taste of delicious fruits and
foods in Uganda.
Much more shopping can be done in super markets especial-
ly for beef and related products.

Language & Communication: English is

the official language in Uganda; Lusoga is the traditional
language of Jinja however Luganda and Swahili are spoken
across the whole country.
The table below shows a translation of a few words into some
most commonly spoken languages.

Telephone: services are spread across the town.

SIM cards are sold in most mobile phone shops in the town
however normal procedures of registration should be taken
otherwise your newly bought SIM card won’t work. Unregis-
tered SIM cards are no longer used in Uganda so please don’t
be caught on the wrong side. Internet and Email services can
be found in café s in cities or bigger towns and in almost all
big restaurants, hotels, Lodges, resorts etc.
However you can encounter problems in finding internet in
villages. It is recommended to get a modem from the inter-
net shop which costs approximately 22 dollars. You need to
get additional internet credits for modem speed e.g. up to
6 dollars, but the best is to ask for recommendation in the
shop depending on the usage need. With such modem con-
nection, internet access is much easier if you are out of the
hotel or cities. The other option is to buy Internet packages/
bundles from a service provider to your phone. Bundles cost
as low as 300 Uganda shillings.

Infrastructure: Jinja houses a main post office and

several other smaller branches, town hall, a main hospital,
an International Hospital, pharmacies and dispensaries. The
town has one of the biggest and modern agricultural and
commodity market in East Africa. There is also a golf course,
a sports center with tennis and other facilities available.
There is a sports stadium in the city center as well as a foot-
ball and athletics stadium in Bugembe another suburb of Jin-
ja, 5 miles (8.0 km) east of the central business district. Also
available now, are several internet cafes. There are numerous
commercial establishments including factories, shopping

malls, cinemas, casinos, supermarkets and shops. Recently,
Jinja Municipality was lined up along with Mbarara Munici-
pality for elevation to city status.

taking both cash and credit cards with you. Some of your
credit or debit cards may not work with the selected bank
systems. Good to carry both master card and visa, as not all
ATMs work properly with some type of cards. At the same
time people at the bank offices are very friendly and helpful,
so anytime you will receive the support and some advice in
case of the problems.
In Uganda there works very well financial service like West-
ern Union and Money Gram, so if you somehow lack cash,

you can simply get it by transfer from your home country.
It will appear as soon as the money is transferred. Pay atten-
tion only on the opening hours and time zone in Uganda.
The opening hours for such financial services are between
8:00AM – 5:00PM/17:00. Such services are available in cities
and towns, even if you can’t find banks.

Transport: Jinja boasts of a good tarmac road net-

work from either way; Kampala or Kenya. There is a good
tarmac road west from Jinja to the capital, Kampala 87 kilo-
meters (54 miles), 90 minutes by car, and two hours by bus).
The tarmac road to Tororo 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the
east of Jinja was generally in poor condition but has recently
been improved with the completion of the Jinja-Bugiri High-
way. Buses and minibus locally called taxis provide transport
between Jinja and other Ugandan towns. Construction of a
new bridge has commenced and this together with the con-
struction of a Kampala – Jinja express high way will reduce
on the time to reach greatly.
Transport in Jinja is dominated by motorbikes and bicycles
(both called “Boda boda” in local language) and small cars
locally known as “Mycar”. These have eased movement from
one point to another while touring the various sites at your
own pace and there are thousands of owner operators in the
town and the surrounding areas. Some companies do the
hiring of sport bicycles for the rider’s pleasure. Clear guide-
lines are provided before you set off for your memorable ex-
perience. Jinja can be accessed through public vehicles called
Taxis and they can be boarded from designated places called
Taxi parks in any town in Uganda. Not sure of how to get to
your destination? Ask for a taxi park nearby.

glory at a very high speed. Real estate business is a “hot cake”
in the area with so many players but most notably is Bujaga-
li Property Agency. This offers brokerage services between
property buyers and sellers, landlords and those seeking
tenancy, property valuation, property management, build-
ing and construction consultancy and much more. Born and
raised in Jinja, they know the region better than anyone else.

Traditional Kitchen/cooking: Meals

in Uganda are prepared mostly by women. In the villages the
meal is eaten by hands in most cases. Women use very tradition-
al methods of preparing food. The traditional Ugandan food is
delicious and very tasty.
In Uganda about 75% of the people live in rural areas. Below are
some of the popular types of meal served in traditional houses:
Posho – made of maize flour and cooked in the banana leaves
and served with different stew/sauce (beans, G-nuts, fish, beef,
etc),
Matooke-it is a type of banana, which is specially prepared and
smashed and served with different sauce e.g. Amaido – peanut
sauce to use on potatoes or matooke, Potatoes – especially popu-
lar are Irish potatoes and sweet potatoes, Cassava – a type of food
that grows in the ground
It is a very interesting way how meals are prepared traditional-
ly. Tourists are more than welcome to participate in such meal
preparation or have possibility to taste such local cuisines. After-
wards, this is definitely a tasteful experience.
