Secretary General
Vijnana Bharati

Science India Forum (SIF) is an initiative by Vijnana Bharati to further the benefits of science
and technology among the global community at large. The Bahrain Chapter of SIF has been
doing dynamic scientific activities in the State of Bahrain since its inception, especially among
the student community.

Sastra Prathibha Contest (Science Talent Search Examination) conducted every year by SIF has
found ever increasing participation from the students across the Kingdom of Bahrain. SIF has been
providing opportunity every year for the winners of Sastra Pratibha Contest to visit prestigious
R&D institutions and other premier institutions of India. This facility has been instrumental in
providing a wide exposure to the students in the world of science thereby enhancing their affinity
towards science in a remarkable manner.

Bahrain Students’ Innovation Congress formed under SIF provides opportunity to the students
across the Kingdom of Bahrain a platform to showcase their talent by presenting the models of
their projects (Learning through Doing). The winners get to showcase their talent and participate
in the National Children’s Science Congress held every year in India.

It is very much our desire that every student and every teacher in Bahrain should derive the
maximum benefits out of SIF activities, which can ultimately ensure the overall progress of the
nation.

I wish the winners of the contest, organisers , teachers and the management of institutions every
success in their all endeavors. The efforts put by the Bahrain team to inculcate science and
technology among school children is praiseworthy.

My best Wishes to Science India Forum, Bahrain team !

Mohamed Bin Abdullah Al Snan

(President Muharraq Municipal Council)
Chief Patron, SIF Bahrain

The main long strategy of most of the countries around the world is to make a knowledge based
society and make their people as innovative as is possible. This is because, it is possible to boost the
economy and the welfare of the society based on innovations.

Innovations help for sustaining the nation’s development and people’s life. We need Innovations
to reduce the cost of products, makes better environment, reduce risks of manmade and natural
disasters, improved health. In order to keep a healthy community we need to provide clean air,
hygienic water and good food, affordable shelter, easy transport and modern communication
facilities.

I have noticed the hard work, unity, dedication, execution capacity of volunteers which made SIF so
popular among the students and teachers of Bahrain.

At this time of 5th anniversary of Science India Forum (SIF), Bahrain, I feel proud to associate with
SIF team and it is my privilege to write this blessing words. My best wishes to the creators of this
magazine “ Scientech 2017-18”.

I am extremely pleased to hear that the Science India Forum, Bahrain is conducting various programs
to foster science and inculcate scientific temper among young students there. All the quality of life
that we are enjoying today is due to achievements and contributions of our forefathers in the field
of Science. The problem which is common to all Countries is same i.e. they are not getting bright
youngsters to pursue scientific research as a career. It is essential to have high quality researchers
in all fields of science for the human civilization to progress. In this context the efforts of voluntary
organizations such as Science India Forum to propagate and nurture scientific temper becomes
important.

I congratulate the Sastra Pratibhas and the winners of Bahrain Students’ Innovation Congress
for their achievements. I urge the child scientists to continue their journey through science which
would be beneficial and instrumental for the betterment of humanity.

In today’s world it is important to invest in Science and the efforts of Science India Forum can
contribute significantly to this arena. I compliment the volunteering efforts of SIF Bahrain to
popularise science among younger generation and wish all success for its future endeavours

Dr. Ravi Warrior
Chairman,
SIF Advisory Board

Every step in our life is important. As you go forward day by day, your creative mind should strive
for something different in the scientific field. The inspiration to think scientifically should originate
from everything around you. Remember…. A creative mind will never rest. It will always crave for
something new even by seeing a blossoming flower. You may fail in your attempt many times, but
never give up. You need not react to every opinion, every comment or every situation. Kick the drama
and keep going ahead. Choose your battles wisely. Not everything deserves your time and attention.
I am now reminded of Mathematician Ramanujan’s answer to the question; what’s the reason for
you not having any close friends??? He said “I expect my friend to be like numbers 220 and 284!”
The divisors of

a) 220 – 1,2,4,5,10,11,20,22,44,55,110,220
b) 284 – 1,2,4,71,142,284
Exclude the numbers 220 and 284 and find the sum of the remaining divisors.

220 – 1+2+4+5+10+11+20+22+44+55+110 = 284
284 – 1+2+4+71+142 = 220
Ramanujan explained them an ideal friendship should be like these numbers to complement each
other. Even when one is absent the other should represent the friend….
Numbers used to inspire him and he finds interesting facts from them…
Come on my young friends… always look forward to service to society. Follow the footpaths of great
scientists of the world. Read more about their life stories… Plan well before you start the journey in
every walk of life…. Remember the Carpenters’ and Tailors’ rule…

Measure twice, if not more, but cut only once…

Best Wishes

Ravindra Khot
Deputy Chief Executive Officer
Support Group
Ithmaar Bank
The voluntary, non-profit Science India Forum (SIF) Bahrain initiative to promote interest in
science among the younger generation by conducting educational programmes and supporting the
development of future creative scientists is, certainly, a noble cause.

The SIF’s continued and growing success since its establishment in 2013 is, in my opinion, testimony
to the clear and pronounced need for such initiatives, and I am pleased to continue our support
for this far-reaching programme. Ultimately, the most important investments we can make today
are those we make in our youth – and this particular initiative is an investment that can pay off
tremendous returns for decades to come and, potentially, touch millions of lives.
Science already affects almost every single aspect of modern-day life and, as we usher in a new,
exciting era of automation, autonomy and increased connectivity, we can only imagine how much
more important it will be in the immediate future, let alone in another generation. Pronounced,
almost revolutionary change, is already on the horizon for various industries, including the
transportation industry, with self-driving cars and even helicopters now an on-the-ground reality.
Even the traditionally reserved and sometimes overly conservative banking and finance industry
is being reinvented by science and technology, with new initiatives like FinTech, and Blockchain
introducing a complete new dimension and a rethink of the industry as we know it.

The significance of these rapid developments mean that, in addition to the actual science itself,
the budding scientists will have increasingly complex challenges to confront. These scientists will,
for example, have to grapple with previously inconceivable moral and ethical considerations, take
remarkably challenging and diverse immediate to longer-term views of everyday issues and play
increasingly important socio-political roles. Climate change, regardless of any controversy within
the scientific community, is a good example of the political role that future scientists will have to
play. These budding scientists will certainly face exciting times, and initiatives like the SIF help
prepare today’s youth for tomorrow’s challenges.

I take this opportunity, once again, to commend the SIF Bahrain team of their efforts, and to
congratulate them on having developed a popular platform that helps nurture scientific innovation
among the youth.

Hon. President
Science India Forum - Bahrain

There is science in every little thing around us. There is a scientist in every little child around us.
Nurturing the scientist in little children to blossom and spread the fragrance of prosperity is a
noble thing in our life. It is the ever most valuable contribution to the humanity. The attraction
towards science among our young generation should be increased as we need more and more
science professionals in the coming future. We need to create innovators who can contribute to the
development of our nation by keeping the needs of common man in their mind.
Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), is a leading science and technology think tank of India closely associated
with the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India and Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO). I feel proud to be associated with Science India Forum (SIF) and VIBHA in
their path to make a unique platform for the young talents in Bahrain with the support of Embassy
of India-Bahrain. SIF aspires to bring the science of tomorrow by nurturing the hidden talents
of thousands of school students in Bahrain by mentoring them with the help of educationalists,
scientists, technocrats, academic experts by organizing empowerment programs such as discussion
of ideas, science models, sharing science news etc.

2016-17 was a year of achievements for SIF Bahrain. SIF organized first ever inter school innovation
congress (BSIC) in 2016 and the top scoring young scientist together with their teacher guide
represented Bahrain in the 25th National Children’s Science Congress(NCSC), a flag ship program
of Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, held at Baramati, India. Various Government and
Non-government authorities have noticed our activities and appreciated us for our tireless efforts to
this noble cause.
At this moment let me highlight, with gratitude, the support and guidance we have received from the
Embassy of India in Bahrain and the Royal Family - Kingdom of Bahrain, for offering us freedom to
continue our efforts for promoting science for the wellness of the human beings. I wish to acknowledge
the advises and encouragement we received from the school managements, teachers, parents,
our advisory board members, members of faculties of universities and government educational
institutions, sponsors and well-wishers.
May the Almighty give Science India Forum Bahrain, more energy to spread their wings for flying

accessible to everyone. In addition, India does not meet the recommended standards/
norms for the number of health care professionals per head of population, especially
doctors.

Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy system
In India, other than allopathic medicine, different forms of scientifically appropriate and
acceptable systems of indigenous medicine are practiced in different parts of the nation.
They are Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, which form
the AYUSH system. And with the National Rural Health Mission taking the stalwart
decision to mainstream the AYUSH system of indigenous medicine, has helped meet the
challenge of shortage of health care professionals. And this has indeed strengthened the
health care service delivery system.

Strategies for ensuring mainstreaming of the AYUSH system
Mainstreaming of AYUSH system is one of the key strategies under National Rural Health
Mission, under which it is envisaged that all primary health centers, block primary
health centers. Along with this, community health centers will provide AYUSH treatment
facilities under the same roof. The staff required for the AYUSH system is arranged either
by relocation of AYUSH doctors from existing dispensaries or by contractual hiring; these
staff members are then trained in primary health care and national health programs.

Additionally, other measures have been proposed and implemented with varying range
of success. These are mobilizing existing AYUSH establishments; motivating AYUSH
practitioners to spread awareness about their branch of medicine; fostering partnerships
with multiple stakeholders; strengthening existing infrastructure; promoting cross-
referrals between different streams of medicine; integrating AYUSH with different
cadres of outreach workers such as accredited social health activists; implementing
special initiatives for the development of AYUSH drugs (e.g., ensuring the ready
availability of AYUSH drugs at all levels; strengthening quality control mechanisms
to avoid manufacture and sale of counterfeit drugs; streamlining the method of drug
standardization to ascertain potency of the drug; building herbariums and crude drug
museums; directing state governments to decide which system of medicine should be
set up in their respective states; establishing higher centers in district hospitals and
medical colleges, such as yoga centers; promoting research work by exploring local
health traditions; expanding existing legal framework for supervising manufacture
and sale of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and homoeopathic drugs; and making way for
an administrative officer to facilitate effective monitoring and supervision of different
activities.

Experience gained
Multiple interventions have been implemented to ensure systematic merger; nevertheless,
the anticipated results have not been achieved. This indirectly indicates presence of
multiple challenges and barriers. For instance variability in the basic philosophy of
practice; disparities in approach to specific clinical conditions or in decision-making;
lack of specific guidelines to promote cross-referral; unfilled positions; inequitable
compensation; minimal support in terms of logistics and infrastructure; unexpected rise
in cross-practice; ethical issues (such as unfriendly relationships between practitioners
of either system); and absence of public accountability mechanisms at primary care
level. The challenges stated undermine the value of AYUSH and demotivates both
practitioner and patient. Hence this results in failure to provide the intended support to
public health system.

Future strategies and innovations
To bridge the gap when it comes to demand for public health professionals in India,
the plan should be stepping up further activities that ensure mainstreaming of AYUSH,
by establishing and strengthening AYUSH institutes and colleges; organizing training
programs for personnel use from the AYUSH sector; formulating standardized guidelines
for treatment of different conditions; encouraging exchange of experts and officers at
international level; extending monetary support to drug manufacturers and AYUSH
institutions for international propagation of their stream; developing AYUSH information
outlets in multiple nations; conducting fellowship courses in India, for students of other
countries, under different streams of AYUSH; promoting community-based research
to assess the scope of AYUSH; building links with pharmacists and their associations;
and by ensuring customized implementation of strategies that have been successfully
employed in other countries. To ensure accessibility and availability of health care
services to all, policy-makers must ensure implementation of strategies that facilitate
mainstreaming of AYUSH, supported by stringent monitoring mechanisms.

Let’s talk

about

exams

Raji Sree Kumar

Life today has become so complex and competitive that examinations are an integral component
of one’s educational career. Exams are not only used to assess knowledge, they also provide
an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know.

Exams may be stressful; but they improve learning. We all remember those days: the nervous
tension, the highly charged examination halls, taking the assigned seat, and peering at the
question paper with known and unknown questions.

Like it or hate it - you have to face it. So why not take it as a challenge rather than a threat?
Most of the exam tips focus on how to make use of your study leaves and some last moment
activities. I don’t think this kind of preparation is enough to achieve a better result. Since
CBSE follows a comprehensive and continuous evaluation method, your performance may
not be enough to achieve a good grade. You are evaluated throughout the academic year by
means of your class room performance, home works, assignments, class works, etc.

I would like to divide the academic year into three zones. Each zone requires different approach
or response from students.

During the regular school days
A stitch in time saves nine. So true, in the case of learning. Success is the sum of small
efforts, repeated day in and day out. These are some tips that you can follow on a daily basis:
• Allocate specific time and place for your studies.
• Identify the type of learner you are. Some students are kinesthetic learners while
others are visual learners.
• Finish your home work on the same day it is given.
• Keep a timeline to complete your assignments.

34 Scientech

• If you are facing difficulties in understanding the concepts, seek help from your
teachers or friends.
• Prepare well for your class test. These small tests help to boost your confidence.
• Make use of different kinds of educational technology wisely.

These timely actions help to improve your confidence and save a lot of time before the exams.
Let’s talk Let’s talk During your study leaves

What are the treatments for cancer ?
Surgery is one of the main treatments for many types of cancer. Surgery means removing the
cancer tissues from the body.

Chemotherapy means using anti-cancer drugs to destroy cancer cells.
Radiotherapy uses radiation like X-ray to kill cancer cells.

Although normal cells are also affected by chemotherapy and radiation, they are better at
repairing themselves than the cancer cells.

Hormone therapy uses medicines to block or lower the amount of hormones in the body to
slow down or stop the growth of cancer.

Hormones are inevitable for normal body function but some cancers use hormones to grow or
develop.
Biological therapies act on the cells and will;
• stop cancer cells from dividing and growing
• seek out cancer cells and kill them
• encourage the immune system to attack cancer cells

Examples are;
Immunotherapy- stimulates our own immune system to work against cancer cells.
Cancer growth blockers- cause a buildup of unwanted proteins in the cancer cells which
eventually kills the cancer.

Gene therapy- introduces a normal copy of the gene into the body to restore the function of
the protein and the cell.

Cancer vaccines- help the immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells.

Conclusion
It is important for people of all age groups to make necessary lifestyle changes to prevent
cancer or reduce the risk of cancer. Keeping an active life, keeping track of what we eat or
drink and avoiding risk factors of cancer play a key role in reducing cancer incidence.

is needed but unavailable. For medical personnel, this is just enough time to avoid risking a
heart attack or permanent brain injury when oxygen is restricted or cut off to patients.

Dr. John Kheir, who first began the study, works in the Boston Children’s Hospital Department
of Cardiology. He found inspiration for the drug in 2006, when he was treating a girl in the ICU
who had a severe case of pneumonia. At the time, the girl didn’t have a breathing tube, when
at the time she suffered from a pulmonary hemorrhage. This means her lungs had begun to
fill up with blood, and she finally went into cardiac arrest. It took doctors about 25 minutes
to remove enough blood from her lungs to allow her to breath. Though, the girl’s brain was
severely injured due to being deprived of oxygen for that long and she eventually died.

Microparticle Composition
The microparticles used are composed of oxygen gas pocketed in a layer of lipids. A Lipid is
a natural molecule that can store energy and act as a part of a cell membrane, they can be
made of many things such as wax, vitamins, phospholipids, and in this case fat is the lipid
that stores the oxygen.

These microparticles are around two to four micrometers in length and carry about three to
four times the oxygen content of our own red blood cells. In the past, researchers had a difficult
time succeeding as prior tests caused gas embolism. This meant that the gas molecules would
become stuck trying to squeeze through the capillaries. They corrected this issue by packaging
them into small deformable particles rather ones where the structure was rigid.

Potential Future Uses
Medical: There is the obvious medical uses where the microparticles can be used to save off
death from a restriction in breathing due to inflammation of the lungs, collapsed lungs, and
the like. It would be good to have these injections ready in hospitals and ambulances for when
the time is needed.

Goal Setting

Setting goal is the way of focusing on your dreams so they become a reality.

Goal Setting - is critical to your success, you need to know in which direction you are heading.
There are Five keys to successful goal setting: SMART goals.

Specific make sure your goals are specific (you get what you ask for)
Measurable how would you know once you have achieved your goal?

Achievable set attainable goals in each subject (eg number of credits or specific grades)
Realistic are you willing to do what it takes to achieve your goal?
Time Frame know when it is to be done

Write your goals down - eg what grades you want to get? Then check you are on track. Setting goals
leads to an increased sense of purpose and focus.

Dreams do not come true magically, they are made step by step. When you do achieve a goal, no
matter how small, celebrate.
