Young Minds will
Shape the Future
of Nation
Mrs Sajitha Satheesh
Principal - Girls School
Hawar International School
Why is Science included as part of Curriculum in schools and colleges all over the world?
It’s a subject with maximum scope for shaping the scientific temperament & attitudes of
the students. Scientific approach by the young generation towards matters only could bring
desirable outcomes in the path to achieve progress of any country since it changes, alters,
moulds & perfects the ways of thinking of the young people, their habits of action and the
values that they cherish to accomplish. In short, the foundations of futuristic India rely heavily
on how far are we successful in inculcating scientific temper & fostering scientific attitudes
in the youngsters.
Question comes, what is scientific attitude & how it shall be inculcated in the young minds.
Predispositions & tendencies, mental set to think and act in a certain way, establishing
relationship between cause and effect, sharp observation powers & a passion to look for
consistent results, conclusions based on solid evidences achieved through empirical approach,
objectivity & willingness to change covers the lexical implications of “Scientific Attitude”.
The role of science teachers, science club mentors, parents and well wishers of the country
comes into play when we try to find ways and means of developing “Scientific attitudes Wave”,
in the minds of tech savvy youngsters.
The teachers can easily influence the young minds through encouraging them to go for wide
reading of books & periodicals in science. If handy & practical science projects as part of
school/college assessments, can attract students, then, genuine research projects can help
them to delve deep into the world of science with specific sets of goals. Most of the schools &
colleges in the developed countries organize Echo clubs, agro gardens, science fairs, field trips,
science live corners, improvisations, and environmental clubs with the help of experienced
science professors or science savvies. Each science teacher in India should take initiative to
organize atleast one such platform. Classrooms should become stages for free debates on
scientific topics, respecting each other’s view points & the teacher or the mentor himself/
herself should encourage the spirit of creative criticism.
Science club mentors have an important role in inculcating scientific attitudes in the young
minds. Organizing science fests, lectures, workshops and seminars will definitely create a
wave in the society and more youngsters will become part of the science wave. Such clubs can
easily guide youngsters through the path of concrete conceptual thinking process & adapt
critical thinking style in every walk of their lives. Usage of Technology such as video dipping,
blog writing and website creation in the clubs could be of great use in developing the right
scientific attitude in this cyber age.

Parents can be the best role models for their
children, by showing empirical approach to
solve any issue that may cross one’s life. Parents
should take children to science conferences or
workshops as if it’s part of life’s routine. That will
help the natural osmosis of scientific temper into
the youngster’s mind.
The scientific attitudes of the citizens of a country
are the clear index of its vision towards future &
attitude to win the world. A generation who have the individual integrity to sift truth from
falsehood, facts from fake data can easily become the architects of a community, in turn a
country ! This is exactly what India needs now, a generation with high scientific attitudes,
to emerge out as one of the super powers. This is our time to foster scientific attitudes to the
young generations…let us be a science teacher, science club mentor or a well wisher of the
country and help our country to march ahead in the paths of the real progress by becoming
part of the “Scientific Attitudes Wave”!
Carbonation: The Key to the Fizz Biz
The fizz in a drink is caused by a mass of tiny bubbles
rising up through the liquid. These bubbles contain
gas that was dissolved in the liquid, but are now
escaping. The gas is carbon dioxide (CO2)—which is
why these drinks are also called carbonated drinks.
As you drink, the carbon dioxide produces a tingling
sensation on your tongue and in your throat. Soft drink
manufacturers force carbon dioxide and water into the
drink at high pressure. The hissing sound you hear
when you open a can or bottle (or the loud pop made by
opening a bottle of champagne) is produced by millions
of carbon dioxide molecules bursting out of the liquid—
the result of a rapid loss of pressure. An unopened
drink is bubble-free because the pressure inside the
can or bottle keeps the carbon dioxide dissolved in the
Manufacturers force CO2 into water at high pressure
until it is supersaturated—more CO2 is dissolved in it
that would be possible under normal, lower pressure
conditions. The molecules of water H2O form “cages”
around the CO2 molecules, preventing them from
escaping. The water is now carbonated. Syrup and
flavourings are added and the mixture poured into a
bottle or can, which is then sealed. This keeps the
pressure inside, so that the CO2 molecules are held in
their molecular cages until the bottle or can is opened.
A Diet Coke and Mentos eruption (left) is a reaction
between the carbonated drink Diet Coke and Mentos
mints that causes the liquid to spray out of its bottle. The
gas released when the mints are dropped into the drink
forces all the liquid out of the bottle in a huge explosion.
The surface of a Mentos mint is rough, covered with
many small holes, which cause carbon dioxide bubbles
to form rapidly—much more so than if the bottle were
to be opened normally. Other substances dropped into
other carbonated drinks have the same—but not quite
so spectacular—effect.

quantity and oil drop spreading pattern.
It’s holistic in approach and the diagnosis
involves the study of person as a whole as
well as his/her disease.
The Siddha System of Medicine emphasises
that medical treatment is oriented not merely
to disease but has to take into account the
patient, environment, the meteorological
consideration, age, sex, race, habits, mental
frame, habitat, diet, appetite, physical condition, physiological constitution etc. This means
the treatment has to be individualistic, which ensures that mistakes in diagnosis or treatment
are minimal.
The Siddha System also deals with the problems affecting women’s health and a lot of
formulations are available in the Siddha classics which can counter these problems for a
better living. The care for women’s health starts from the first day of the girl child. The Siddha
System strongly advocates breast feeding upto the first three months of the life. The Siddha
System believes in the principle of food itself is medicine and during this nursing period,
lactating mothers are advised to take the food rich in iron, protein and fibre so as to prevent
any nutritional disorders both to the child as well as the mothers. Once in 15 days, the
mothers are advised to take simple remedies for de -worming so that they may not land up in
anaemic conditions.
For any disease due to infection or otherwise, the treatment is individualistic on examination
of that particular patient. Once the girl child attains menarche, the Siddha System has got a
variety of preparations which can strengthen her reproductive system so as to deliver a healthy
child in future. And also, effective treatments are available to take care of the menopausal
syndromes, especially problems related to the hormonal imbalance.
The Siddha System is effective in treating chronic cases of liver, skin diseases especially Psoriasis,
rheumatic problems, anaemia, prostate enlargement, bleeding piles and peptic ulcer. The
Siddha Medicines which contains mercury, silver, arsenic, lead and sulphur have been found
to be effective in treating certain infectious diseases including venereal diseases. Practitioners
have claimed that Siddha medicines are effective in reducing the highly debilitating problems
that manifest themselves among patients of HIV/AIDS. More research into the efficacy of
these medicines is presently in progress.

Mednet Bahrain WLL
Immunity is the ability of body to resist disease. Here we emphasis the body resistance but
what about mind? Health as defined by World Health Organization (WHO) is a state of complete
physical mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of diseases and infirmity. So
to be healthy our mind also should be healthy.
Let us see how we can improve mental immunity. Unlike olden days we are coming across
more children suicides, hyperactive kids and maximum of this era kids especially who lives
in urban areas are not able to with stand a failure, stress, unable to take decisions etc. Do
you know the reason? I can say it’s due to lack of mental immunity. Our new generation is
lucky enough for many life circumstances and the standard of living including, technology
development and the chances of updated educational system, entry to Mars etc. but lacking
a very important thing which is mental immunity. Where do we get it or how can we develop
it is also very important to understand.
It’s natural that children hesitate to share their every feelings with parents. In previous days
Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts, other relatives, close neighbors, well-wishers all were there for
children as good advisors and good listeners which help them to wash out their mental ill
feelings and clarify it with good thoughts, thus boosting the immunity automatically. Children
in nuclear families are unable to share their feelings with anybody and the result is that they
accumulate the small mind with lots of queries thus polluting the mind. The solution to this
is social life and it is the responsibility of parents to make a good social interferences to kids
so that they can mingle each other with other people in the community.
We know about Vaccinations; they prevent our body from specific diseases by injecting the
dead or attenuated disease causing organisms to our body and thus tricking our body to adapt
immunity against the introduced organism and hence preventing a particular disease. As I
told in the beginning our body is capable of fighting against most of the diseases and helping
us to resist diseases which is called immunity. The immunity which is inborn is Natural
immunity and the one we get after exposing to a disease or artificially through vaccination is
called Acquired Immunity.
Considering the same scenario with mind, all of us have an inborn mental
strength since child hood which can be considered as the natural mental
immunity. The strength of Natural immunity is how we adapt it according
to the circumstances. What about acquired mental immunity?
The development of the mental strength/immunity is something
very serious to discuss. If a child cries for a toy and if his parent
94 Scientech

buys it for the first time, he will cry for the second and third time too for whatever he needs;
thinking that crying will help to satisfy his needs. If his parent hesitate for the fourth time
even after crying he will adopt another level of emotional blackmailing and there the parents
have to bow to their child thus giving an opportunity to subordinate child’s mental immunity
.Even though it’s a small example, imagine this condition in olden days where there were
more than 6-7 children at every houses and the parents were not able to fulfil their all wishes.
So those days children were adapted to accept the “No” facts and all their wishes were never
fulfilled. They used to share things between siblings and parents were not scared to send
children alone to distant places even for playing because they were having trust about their
capability of escaping from any possible dangers around because of their life styles with many
people around and self-maintained mental powers. We know these are the environments that
we cannot retract back but a humble request to parents is to be brave to say “No” to your
children for anything you feel which is not good for them especially during small ages even
though you have enough money or he or she is your only child. When they grow up let them
make small decisions and let them make mistakes so that they can prevent it in the next time
instead drawing lines to their day today life. Let them mingle with all types of people; never
mind, poor, rich, caste, country, religion, age. Let them explore to the world, but not through
technologies but through the real humanities. Let our children be a helping hand in the place
of accident but not a photographer or selfie poster .Let our children understand emotions of
parents, elders, family .So this is purely the responsibility of parents and elders for a mentally
immune new generation.
If our children understand the importance of social life , need of respect to elders , empathy to
emotions ,and most important thing is inner feeling to smile to others gradually increases the
mental immunity. Dear parents don’t feel that if your children cry, you need to satisfy their
wishes. You need to fulfill their wishes only if you are able to do so financially or other ways
or you are 100 % sure about his/her need for the same.
Never compare your children with his /her friends which helps to only retard his mental
health. Try to encourage your child with whatever talent he has to boost the mental health.
Be sure to convey the message to your children that you are with them for any ups and falls
so that they won’t be scared to face you with lower marks and with failures .Let them be free
to share any good or bad moments of their days. The world is competitive but priority to be
given for having our child with us in any circumstances. Make the family to be bounded with
love and care and make your children be feel about that care wherever he /she goes. Here
develops the mental immunity.
Prolonged periods of anxiety and depression can weaken and suppress the immune system.
According to Ayurveda, strong immunity is a product of good digestion, strong metabolic fire,
quality organ functioning, and a balanced endocrine system (which includes appropriately
balanced hormones).
Health is a dynamic condition resulting from a body’s constant adjustment and adaptation
in response to stresses and changes in environment for maintaining an inner equilibrium
called homeostasis. The deep interconnection between mind and body was well known to our
ancestors in India before thousands of years itself. Whatever is happening in the physiology
affects the mental and emotional state. If an individual experiences fear, the physiology
automatically reflects this in an increase in cortisone and rapid heartbeat. Ancient Indian
system views the body and mind as a single connected unit. Modern scientific research has
confirmed this connection and calls it Psychoneuroimmunity where they discovered that
immune system and mind are interdependent.
In short, for a better future generation, mental immunity is as important as physical immunity,
so along with the good food and fruitful Physical activities , nourish our kids with mental
immunity too so that they can be a perfect future generation ; again the responsibility is ours .
