Master’s Degree

The old man sat there in the church and listened while we sang
He knew every word to every song

He said I’m not a singer never learned to read a word
But he closed his eyes and smiled and sang alone

He told us how when he was young, things were different then
He had to go to work to make ends meet

But his mother read the Bible each night before they sleep
Then God began his Master’s Degree

I’ve got a Master’s Degree – Jesus taught me all that I need
He taught me to love my neighbor and I answer for only me

God gave me a Master’s Degree

Tears would fall down his face, as he talked about his life
And how they struggled just to survive

But those nights by his mother’s side lived in his heart
The words she spoke still burned in his mind
And he said:
