Talat Phlu (literally betel market in Thai) is both an area and a market on Thoet Thai Road in Talat Phlu Subdistrict, Thon Buri District, Bangkok. Situated beside Khlong Bangkok Yai, Talat Phlu has a long history. In the Ayutthaya period, many Chinese people settled down and traded in this area. Later, Malays from Ayutthaya and Pattani also migrated to Talat Phlu making an interesting cultural blend. Many locals grew betel trees and sold their produce via their local market so Talat Phlu Market became Bangkok’s biggest betel market. When the government banned betel nuts as a part of the country’s modernization efforts, this market began replacing betel with other types of products, most of which were the same as those offered by the Yaowarat area. Talat Phlu, as a result, became a bustling trading hub in Thon Buri as word spread that, “No matter what Yaowarat sells, Talat Phlu has them too.” Over time, Talat Phlu has also evolved into a famous food district on Bangkok’s Thon Buri side because Teochew-ethnic Chinese migrants also shared their food culture in the area. Its Chinese chive dumplings (Ku Chai Kuih) rank among the must-eat items here. Today, Talat Phlu is hugely popular with Thai and tourist food enthusiasts. Talat Phlu Talat Phlu 3
Talat Phlu Railway Station Located near Thoet Thai Road in Talat Phlu Subdistrict, Thon Buri District, Bangkok, this small railway station is a part of the Mae Klong Line. In the neighborhood are various famous food shops. Old houses still abound in this area, as locals have maintained their community ways of life so visitors can still indulge in the unique charm of Talat Phlu. 4 Talat Phlu
Although people now have various choices of transport modes, Talat Phlu Railway Station remains important. It operates on the Mae Klong Line, which runs from the Wongwian Yai Railway Station and passes Talat Phlu Railway Station and Samut Sakhon Province before terminating in Samut Songkhram Province. Currently, this train line is still in operation, facilitating both cargo and passenger transport. Although old, Talat Phlu Railway Station has played an important role in community and Samut Songkhram-bound transportation. Talat Phlu 5
Wat Ratchakhrue Wat Ratchakhrue, also known as Wat Bang Yi Ruea Nai, was constructed by a Mon migrant in the late Ayutthaya period. Initially, this temple was called Wat Wang Nam Won since it was located where Khlong Bangkok Yai, Khlong Bang Nam Chon and Khlong Tha Phra converge causing a whirlpool (nam won in Thai). As its founder was Mon ethnic, locals also referred to this temple as Wat Mon. During the Thon Buri period, this temple underwent major restoration under the auspices of Phraya Phichai Dap Hak. In the Rattanakosin period, King Buddha Yot Fa Chulalok the Great (King Rama I) declared it a royal monastery and renamed it Wat Ratchakhrue. 6 Talat Phlu
Key historical features of this temple include Wihan Noi, a chapel where a Buddha image in the attitude of being cremated is enshrined. It is widely believed that casting a Buddha image in this posture will change the country’s fate from bad to good. Another chapel called Wihan Yai, which is the oldest building in the temple, houses a Buddha image cast in the Sukhothai art style. Because wishes through prayer are often fulfilled, this image is also widely referred to as Luang Pho To Som Pratthana (Big Buddha Image for Fulfilled Wishes). Wat Ratchakhrue, moreover, prominently features an artificial mount, the so-called Khao Mor, on top of which is a Mondop that houses a replica of Lord Buddha’s footprint and a color mural of Lord Buddha. Of the two stairways leading to the Mondop, one features Nagas while the other has a pair of giant statues at its entrance. Khao Mor also has a hermit pavilion, a Metteyya hall, and a small stupa with exterior niches for placing lit candles. This replica mountain is considered most similar to the original at Wat Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi Province. Picture from “Transformation and Meanings of the Miniature Mountain at Wat Ratchakhrue, Thonburi,” by Siridate Wangkran, 2563, NAJUA: History of Architecture and Thai Architecture, 17(2), 192-237. Wat Chantharam Located in Bangkok’s Thon Buri District, Wat Chantharam is a royal monastery. Built in the Ayutthaya period, the temple is now more than 200 years old. In the old days, it was known as Wat Bang Yi Ruea Klang or Wat Klang (meaning the middle temple) because it was between Wat Bang Yi Ruea Nai (Wat Ratchakhrue) and Wat Bang Yi Ruea Nok (Wat Intharam). The temple was restored in the reign of King Nang Klao (King Rama III), who renamed it Wat Chantharam. The ordination hall of this temple used to be made of bricks and mortar. However, due to the ravages of time, it underwent another restoration in 1974. Using reinforced concrete, the hall became stronger and more beautiful. The structure still retains the traditional art that was particularly liked by King Rama III. The principal Buddha image in the hall is made of brass and in the attitude of subduing Mara. Also enshrined here is an ancient Buddha image, wearing leaden headgear, in the attitude of controlling rain. This exquisite half-teak image was registered with the Fine Arts Department. Beautiful murals inside the ordination hall feature Chinese motifs. 8 Talat Phlu

Wat Intharam Previously known as Wat Bang Yi Ruea Nok, this temple was built in the Ayutthaya period and adjoined Wat Bang Yi Ruea Nai or Wat Ratchakhrue. Wat Bang Yi Ruea Nok was a public temple until it was restored and declared a royal monastery by King Taksin the Great after the establishment of Thon Buri as the capital. Because King Taksin the Great regularly practiced Dhamma and performed royal ceremonies in its compound, this royal monastery had much significance during the Thon Buri period. The temple would also later house the relics of King Taksin the Great and his queen. The temple, moreover, hosted many royally sponsored cremation ceremonies. In the reign of King Rama III, 18 Talat Phlu
Also erected in the temple’s compound is an equestrian statue of King Taksin the Great with his right hand raising a sword in a manner that suggests achieving victory. People who respect King Taksin the Great thus usually come to pray for success and career advancement from this sacred statue. The statue also attracts those who want to join the army. the temple underwent major restoration, a new ordination hall was then constructed. King Rama III renamed the temple Wat Intharam. The principal Buddha image in the new ordination hall is Phra Buddha Chinnavorn, which was cast in the attitude of subduing Mara in the Sukhothai art style. Also in the temple’s compound are two stupas known as Chedi Ku Chat (Nation-saving Stupas), one of which contains King Taksin the Great’s relics and the other stupa contains his queen’s. Talat Phlu 19
Wat Pho Nimit Sathit Mahasimaram Wat Pho Nimit Sathit Mahasimaram, shortly called Wat Pho Nimit and also widely known as Wat Pho Talat Phlu among locals, sits on a plot of land donated by the Venerable Somdet Phra Wannarat (Daeng Silawattano), a former abbot of Wat Suthat Thepwararam, in dedication to Mr. Pho and Mrs. Mi, his deceased parents. The temple was thus initially named Wat Pho Mi. King Chulalongkorn the Great (King Rama V) subsequently declared this temple a royal monastery and renamed it Wat Pho Nimit. 20 Talat Phlu
The key structure of Wat Pho Nimit is its ordination hall. Built in traditional Thai style, the hall’s roof is decorated with gable apexes, serrated ridges on the sloping edges of the gable, and the gable end. The temple has two types of boundary stones or Sema: one, called Maha Sema, demarcates the Buddhist ceremonial zone and the other abuts the wall of the ordination hall. Between the windows of the ordination hall are depictions of other important temples such as Wat Ratchabophit Sathit Mahasimaram. Another highlight is Maha Chedi, a Lanka-style stupa where relics of the temple’s founder Somdet Phra Wannarat is stored. In addition, a pavilion was built at the temple to receive King Rama V, who dropped by to present royal Kathin robes. Currently, this pavilion is used as the Pho-Mi Pracha Uthit Library. Suan Phlu Mosque 22 Talat Phlu
Suan Phlu Mosque, which is also known as Ban Suan Mosque, sits by the Wongwian Yai – Maha Chai Train Route on Soi Thoet Thai 11, Thoet Thai Road, opposite the Thon Buri District Office. The mosque is named after the betel orchards that flourished in the area in the past. Many locals are Muslim who have lived here for a long time. Some others migrated from Pattani in the reign of King Rama I. Some Muslims even travelled from as far as India and settled down here. It is not clear when the Suan Phlu Mosque was built. However, its original building was a wooden one-storey structure with a hip roof. The building had a drum tower that still remains today. In 1836, the mosque was renovated into a brick-and-mortar structure in the traditional kudi (imam’s residence) style. Its structure was similar to the Bang Luang Mosque or Kudi Khao, which is in the nearby Khong Bang Luang neighborhood. Over time, the building became too small to accommodate Muslims who came to observe religious rites. Therefore, construction began on a bigger structure and was completed in 1975; the mosque still functions today. Beyond its walls are many Muslim families, food shops and stalls selling the area’s famous dessert “Badin Cake”(Thai–Muslim cake with raisins and sweetened gourds). Talat Phlu 23
Wat Waramattayaphanthasararam Located in the Talat Phlu area, Wat Waramattayaphanthasararam is a temple aged over 100 years. Built between 1827 and 1837 after Siam’s victory against Vientiane, the temple’s original name, Wat Khun Chan, is indicative of how Thais pronounced Vientiane then. Subsequently, King Rama V restored this temple and renamed it Wat Waramattayaphanthasararam. 24 Talat Phlu
Influenced by Burmese art style, most structures and items in the temple are colorful. There are several chapels and halls housing different images such as Luang Pho To, the White Jade Buddha, Guan Yin, a Reclining Buddha, and Phra Buddha Chinnarat. A most famous attraction is a large image of Rahu in black and gold. This sacred image attracts believers who want to remove bad luck and live well in years when misfortune prevails. To worship Rahu, the faithful must present eight types of black items such as boiled black chicken, black liquor, and black jelly. The most appropriate time for such worship is Wednesday night. Every year, the temple holds a prayer festival dedicated to Rahu and believers are welcome to participate. Talat Phlu 25
Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen Built in the middle Ayutthaya period, Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is a royal monastery. It underwent a major restoration under the auspices of King Rama III and retained its Ayutthaya architectural style. In the reign of King Vajiravudh (King Rama VI), the temple began to deteriorate and had no abbot. But in 1916, the Venerable Luang Pho Sod from Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram became the abbot of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen. Under his leadership, Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen became a center of Dhamma practices and Pali studies. Later on, Luang Pho Sod was promoted monastically to the rank of Phra Mongkhon Thepmuni. But he is better known as Luang Pho Wat Pak Nam. A key structure of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is Phra Maha Chedi Maha Ratchamongkhon, which blends 26 Talat Phlu
Rattanakosin with Lanna architectural style. Standing 80 meters high, this huge stupa has five floors and is open to visitors. On the first floor is a folk museum. The second floor is a Dhamma practice zone, which can accommodate up to 1,000 people. On the third floor is a museum with private collections of the current abbot. The fourth floor houses a Buddha image made of pure gold and images of deceased monks who are highly revered. On the fifth floor is an emerald-green glass stupa that enshrines Lord Buddha’s relics. Another highlight of the temple is Phra Buddha Dhammakaya Thepmongkhon (the Big Buddha), an immense bronze Buddha image in the attitude of meditation. With the height of a 20-storey building, it is the tallest Buddha image in Bangkok and a remarkable landmark of the Talat Phlu neighborhood. Talat Phlu 27
Talat Phlu Scholar Mr. Praphan Trairat Mr. Praphan, 77, is an important figure in the Talat Phlu area, as he has turned a part of his house into the Talat Phlu Memorial Library and serves as its librarian. Located at the end of Soi Thoet Thai 20 near the Shrine of the Fire God, the library occupies a wooden building. Mr. Praphan spent his pension on the renovation of a rather dilapidated wooden structure so that it could open as a library. He hoped his house would then become a community center where people could drop by to relax and read his books. The library’s concept is “Freedom without Constraints or Pressure”. Launched in February 2019, the library aims to be an education center. Inside the library is a vast collection of books and old magazines that Mr. Praphan has accumulated. On the shelves are also medical textbooks, which have long fascinated the library’s founder. In addition, this library provides space for people to show off their artistic talents. Small exhibitions are welcome in its compound. The library also accepts book donations. 28 Talat Phlu
Interested people can use the library’s services on Saturdays and Sundays only. The library allows visitors to read books, relax, eat snacks, and pursue constructive activities in its compound. Mr. Praphan welcomes visitors and hopes they can indulge in the warm ambience of this vintage - style library. Photo courtesy: ถามสิ..อิฉันคนตลาดพลู Talat Phlu 29
