There wasn’t much red meat in my diet

eat good fats back then and everything
was so strict that I think it restricted my
progress a little every time I dieted. These
days I eat a lot of sodium, even up until
three days out from the show. Good fats
are also an absolutely essential part of
my diet these days. This comes in the

the way I do now allows me to actually
gain muscle while dieting, whereas in
the past, because of the zero sodium
intake, it was really hard to gain or even

How do you structure your training during the

On Mondays I do back, Tuesdays I train shoulders and

takes me about 90 minutes to finish. I do cardio for 20

What are your thoughts on the recent news of
Marius Dohne’s retirement?
It’s really sad. Marius had a great future on the
Olympia stage and I think he has done
incredibly well over the past few years to
get where he is. We were all very proud
of him placing at the Olympia last year
and I think that given a few more
opportunities like that he would have
progressed quite well. I don’t think
it’s nice for any bodybuilder to
have to go through what he
is going through now, but
South Africa supports him
and I hope he pulls through
these health issues that he
is having.
You’ve been in the
game for a while now
and you also help
a lot of athletes.
What are the biggest
mistakes you are
seeing guys make time
and time again?
Trying to get to a goal too
fast. Guys need to take their
time and give their bodies
the time it needs to repair and
heal. The younger. inexperienced
bodybuilders who are trying to
make a name for themselves really
believe that it’s all about the gear and
I’ve learned that it’s not. Just because an
athlete is more advanced than an amateur
doesn’t mean he is taking massive amounts of
steroids. So many guys are taking way too much
and this is one of the biggest mistakes I’m seeing at
the moment. It all comes down to good, hard training
and nutrition. Guys are also not taking enough time
off the drugs and they’re not getting checked out
medically once they come off their cycles. There’s a
complete misconception in terms of what is really
going on.
Do you have any predictions on the up and coming
local season?
I have a few guys who I am helping at the moment.
Ryan Henrico is one of them and he has picked up
some nice size of late. I’m predicting a top three
placing for him at this year’s IFBB SA Championships.
I’m also training Duane van Zyl, who is actually
a novice. He is currently 126kg with a body fat
percentage of 6%, so we’ll see what happens a little
later this year with him. If I look at the other local
guys, I think Bossie, Vusi and Mario are always good
contenders. I don’t think Vusi will be able to stand
in the heavyweight category again, but we’ll see.
Mario looked his best ever last year and I think he’ll
