for and I try to tell all the guys involved in
politics to rather go to university and take
up political science. For all those who come
up to me after a show and tell me that the
judges have robbed me, I simply tell them
that I think the judges have much better
things to do than come to a show and try
to rob Nelson Mthembu. I really don’t think
that I’m that important that judges would
try to rob me at a show. Sure, I have a lot
of second place trophies at home, but they
don’t dictate who I am.
What would you say to young guys trying to
break into the sport and become the next
big thing in SA bodybuilding?
I said it earlier and I’ll say it again,
Rome wasn’t built in a day. It’s all about
applying the three laws, namely patience,
perseverance and consistency. You have
to live this sport like a lifestyle. Genetics
play an important role in developing your
physique so you need to become aware, in
the early stages of your training, whether or
not you develop muscle quickly or slowly.
You might need to have more patience if
you are a hardgainer because you need
to work with your body’s ability to build
muscle. You also can’t reach your peak
unless you are competing. You need to
push your body to extremes to make those
incremental improvements from year to
year.
What shows can we expect to see you at this
year?
Definitely IFBB Provincials and Nationals. I’d
also like to compete in NABBA this year. I’d
like to compete internationally as well.
Anyone you’d like to thank?
Without the support of my family I would
never be the bodybuilder I am today. I’d
like to thank my wife Nosipho and my kids.
If your family doesn’t support you in your
chosen sport then you can forget it. My gym
sponsor also plays a huge role in my support
structure as I work with him at the gym for
a few hours a day. I’d also like to thank God
for all His blessings and for taking care of
me and allowing me to become the athlete
I am today.
Any last words?
People will always find a reason not to go
to the gym. Whether it be blame, excuses or
criticism, at the end of the day, if you want
to make it happen you’ll find a way. M.E
