Once there was a young man who called himself Icarus. His father always wanted
his children to look after themselves and do what they wanted. The trouble was that
Icarus always wanted to put himself into danger. His father said again and again if
we don’t take care, we’d hurt ourselves.
Icarus shocked his father with an idea that he was going to try out on himself. He
had watched birds flying throwing themselves into the air. His sister she would like
to push herself into the air and fly but she was too frightened. Icarus said he would
try and he promised his father: I will not injure myself. The last words his father
said before Icarus left were: look after yourself.
Unfortunately, Icarus went too near the sun and the wax on his wings melted and
the feathers worked themselves free and he fell on the ground and died.

However, presently compelled him to do something; and as the use of force did not
promise success he determined to resort to lie going up to the bull in friendly way.
A lion watched a fat bull feeding in a meadow and his mouth watered when he
thought of the royal make but he did not dare to attack him for he was afraid of his
sharp horns hunger.
The bull was foolish enough to be persuaded by this flattery to have his horns cut
off; and having now lost his only means of defense fell an easy prey to the lion.
He said to him, “I cannot help saying how much I admire your magnificent figure,
what a fine head! What powerful shoulders and thighs! But my dear friend, what
in the world makes you wear those ugly horns! You must find them as awkward as
they are unsightly. Believe me; you would do much better without them.
Moral: Don’t trust anyone without reason.
c. Arrange the sentences in correct order and write a readable story.
The Ant and The Grasshopper
Sensibly as all ants do, they had collected the grain during the summer. Their
plan was to eat this source during the winter.
They were so engaged in their work that they didn’t notice a grasshopper.
One winter day when the sun was shining you could hear the sound of great
activity.
What you could hear were the ants who were busy drying grains.
The grasshopper was so weak that he was practically starving because he hadn’t
eaten for ages.
He saw the ants and begged them with all the strength he could find to let him
have a little food.
The ants shook their heads at him and asked him why he hadn’t stored up food
in the summer.
The poor grasshopper confessed that he had spent the whole summer enjoying
himself singing and dancing.
The moral of this fable is: Laziness is the source of suffering.
All the ants laughed and said in that case he would have to dance starving to
bed in the winter.

An Unforgettable Event
When I remember the incident that occurred to me at my uncle’s house, I tremble
with fear and my body shrinks. Last month, I visited my uncle to give him some
ripe mangoes. It was a hot evening. I reached there at about 6:30 pm. After taking
food, I had a great talk with my uncle. He told me some interesting things about his
childhood. Then we went to bed. When I slept on bed, I realized something moving
under my mattress. It rolled and rolled and finally came up and crowded on my
stomach. I knew it was a real cobra. I was so nervous and afraid that I didn’t even
cry. The snake reared up its head. It was about to bite me, then my uncle came there
and threw away the snake with a stick. Then he hit the snake to death. Now I always
check my bed before I sleep. This was an unforgettable event in my life.

The Naughty Boy
Long time ago, there lived an old poet, a thoroughly
kind old poet. As he was sitting one evening in his
room, a dreadful storm arose without, and the rain
streamed down from heaven; but the old poet sat warm
and comfortable in his chimney-corner, where the fire
blazed and the roasting apple smiled.
"Those who have not a roof over their heads will be
wetted to the skin," said the good old poet.
"Oh let me in! Let me in! I am cold, and I'm so wet!"
exclaimed suddenly a child that stood crying at the door
and knocking for admittance, while the rain poured
down, and the wind made all the windows rattle.
"Poor thing!" said the old poet, as he went to open the door. There stood a little boy,
quite naked, and the water ran down from his long golden hair; he trembled with
cold, and had he not come into a warm room he would most certainly have perished
in the frightful tempest.
"Poor child!" said the old poet, as he took the boy by the hand. "Come in, come in,
and I will soon restore thee! Thou shalt have wine and roasted apples, for thou art
verily a charming child!" And the boy was so really.
His eyes were like two bright stars; and although the water trickled down his hair,
it waved in beautiful curls. He looked exactly like a little angel, but he was so pale,
and his whole body trembled with cold. He had a nice little bow in his hand, but
it was quite spoiled by the rain, and the tints of his many-coloured arrows ran one
into the other.
The old poet seated himself beside his , and took the little fellow on his lap; he
squeezed the water out of his dripping hair, warmed his hands between his own,
and boiled for him some sweet wine. Then the boy recovered, his cheeks again
grew rosy, he jumped down from the lap where he was sitting, and danced round
the kind old poet.
"You are a merry fellow," said the old man.
Shubharambha's New Spark English Reader Book 6 Approved By CDC (Nepal) 265
"What's your name?"
"My name is Cupid," answered the boy. "Don't you know me? There lies my bow;
it shoots well, I can assure you! Look, the weather is now clearing up, and the
moon is shining clear again through the window."
"Why, your bow is quite spoiled," said the old poet.
"That were sad indeed," said the boy, and he took the bow in his hand and examined
it on every side. "Oh, it is dry again, and is not hurt at all; the string is quite tight.
I will try it directly." And he bent his bow, took aim, and shot an arrow at the old
poet, right into his heart. "You see now that my bow was not spoiled," said he
laughing; and away he ran.
The naughty boy, to shoot the old poet in that way; he who had taken him into his
warm room, who had treated him so kindly, and who had given him warm wine and
the very best apples!
The poor poet lay on the earth and wept, for the arrow had really flown into his
heart.
"Fie!" said he. "How naughty a boy Cupid is! I will tell all children about him that
they may take care and not play with him, for he will only cause them sorrow and
many a heartache."
And all good children, to whom he related this story, took great heed of this naughty
Cupid; but he made fools of them still, for he is astonishingly cunning. When the
university students come from the lectures, he runs beside them in a black coat and
with a book under his arm. It is quite impossible for them to know him, and they
walk along with him arm in arm, as if he, too, were a student like themselves; and
then, unperceived, he thrusts an arrow to their bosom. When the young maidens
come from being examined by the clergyman, or go to church to be confirmed,
there he is again close behind them. Yes, he is forever following people. At the play,
he sits in the great chandelier and burns in bright flames, so that people think it is
really a flame, but they soon discover it is something else. He roves about in the
garden of the palace and upon the ramparts: yes, once he even shot your father and
mother right in the heart. Ask them only and you will hear what they'll tell you. Oh,
he is a naughty boy, that Cupid; you must never have anything to do with him. He
is forever running after everybody. Only think, he shot an arrow once at your old
grandmother! But that is a long time ago, and it is all past now; however, a thing of
that sort she never forgets. Fie, naughty Cupid! But now you know him, and you
know, too, how ill-behaved he is!

Study the following line graph, and do the activities that follow.
This is a line graph. The above given line graph exhibits the data of maize production
in Nepal in Hectare.
According to the graph, it presents the trend of maize production in hectare from
2008 to 2016. The past 9 years’ maize production trend is quite fluctuated over
years. In the initial three years, the production trend seems quite the same. In the
year 2011, the production of maize has a slight rise which is 906253. But it fell to
871387, almost the same to the initial year, in the year 2012. In the year 2013, it
again plummeted to 849635, which to a greater extent, is a significant decrease.
However, the production increased significantly in the year 2014 reaching to
928761 and being constant in the following years 2015 and 2016.
On the whole, the line graph demonstrates that the production of maize in hectare is
constant except in the year 2013. In the year 2011 and 2014, the productions seem
to have increased significantly. However, the rest 6 years’ production is quite the
same.

At Long Last, Melamchi Water Flows Into Kathmandu Valley
The Rising Nepal
07 Mar, 2021
By a Staff Reporter
Kathmandu, March-7: As water from the Melamchi River in Sindhupalchok
district finally arrives in Kathmandu, hopes are high that the residents will finally
be able to drink it.
The Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP) began filling the 26-km-long tunnel
with water since 22 February. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Saturday pressed
a switch to open the gate of the tunnel at Sundarijal, letting water stored there make
its way into the Kathmandu Valley.
280 Approved By CDC (Nepal) Shubharambha's New Spark English Reader Book 6
The project has completed a water treatment facility with a capacity of treating
85-million-litre of water per day in Sundarijal while another is nearing completion.
The treated water will then flow through a 1400-mm-diameter pipeline to 10 storage
reservoirs around the Valley.
However, the water collected in the tunnel is not channeled to the treatment facility
but diverted to the Bagmati River. According to the MWSP, it would take about two
weeks to flush out the water collected in the tunnel. After that, it would be examined
for about a week to prevent the occurrence of any problem in the days ahead.
Water would be sent regularly to the tunnel only after completing the process.
Earlier, the project had begun to fill the tunnel with water in July 2020. But two of
its employees died as the force of the accumulated water broke one of the gates.
Later, Chief of the project Tiresh Prasad Khatri had claimed that some long-term
safety measures were applied in the tunnel.
The project was initially slated for completion by 2008. The total demand for water
in that year was 325-million-litre per day (MLD) which is expected to reach about
500 MLD in 2022.
The government then planned to add additional 340 MLD from the Yangri and
Larke rivers to the tunnel by 2022 to meet the growing demand but the second and
third phases of the MWSP are yet to begin.
