Chapter President Greeting

Greetings
I count it a blessing to extend a warm welcome to the 47th Miss Teenage Tampa Scholarship Pageant,
presented by Gamma Theta Omega, Incorporated, in partnership with the members of Gamma Theta
Omega Chapter. As president of 240 plus members of the hardest working, service-oriented chapter, I
greet you in the name of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, which was founded 110 years ago
on the campus of Howard University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
This year’s thought provoking pageant theme is “Reclaiming Our Time: Sparkling Pearls of Purpose,
Potential and Power”. It will allow 10 young ladies to demonstrate just how proud they are to reclaim
their time, to sparkle like pearls and to show the world that they have purpose, potential and power.
The pageant’s theme puts me in the mind of the blockbuster movie, “Black Panther”, where the women
of Wakanda showed tremendous purpose, potential and power. They were fearless and ready to defend
their country Wakanda even unto death. Although the country Wakanda is fictitious, the theme of
Wakanda makes Wakanda real. Simply said, “Wakanda is Community.” It’s the community where the
women of Gamma Theta Omega Chapter log countless volunteer hours serving all mankind in the areas
of our 2014-2018 International Programs under the leadership of our international president, Dr. Dorothy
Buckhanan Wilson, through educational enrichment, family strengthening, health promotion, environ-
mental ownership and global impact. We reclaim our time by serving all mankind with purpose, poten-
tial and power.
Having recently celebrated over 75 years of Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood”, Gamma Theta Omega
Chapter, recognizes the generosity and continued support of our families, friends, business partners and
professional associates for the Miss Teenage Tampa Scholarship Pageant. The pageant has afforded
Gamma Theta Omega the opportunity to provide over 400 scholarships to junior and senior girls in the
community. For this collaboration, we sincerely thank you.
Lastly, a very special thank you to the members of Gamma Theta Omega, our General Chairman, Mrs.
Tangela Dupree, General Co-chairmen, Mrs. Carla White Sunday and Mrs. Monica Williams Har-
ris, and the entire Miss Teenage Tampa Advisory Committee whose hard work for producing another
stellar pageant production is worthy of praise.

4 | Miss Teenage Tampa Scholarship Pageant

General Chairman Greeting

Good evening and welcome to our Forty Seventh Miss Teenage Tampa Scholarship Pageant!
Our theme this year is, Reclaiming Our Time: “Sparkling Pearls of Purpose, Potential, and Power!”
We recently heard Congresswoman Maxine Waters repeatedly used the phrase, “Reclaiming my time,
reclaiming my time,” when an individual attempted to cleverly flatter her with words during a congres-
sional hearing. Essence Magazine describes the encounter by Congresswoman Waters and Steve
Mnuchin as a masterclass on how to handle people who try to waste your time!! In part, our chosen
theme is a celebration and recognition of distinguished women who have demonstrated extraordinary
leadership and courage by making their voices heard to inspire and empower others. Just like Con-
gresswoman Waters, our contestants are reclaiming their time as they eloquently heed the call to lead
their generation with Purpose, Potential, and Power.
This evening we present ten young ladies who have answered the call to lead. Even at their young ages
they are leading in civic engagement, academics, philanthropy and of course social awareness.
Gamma Theta Omega Chapter continues to serve the Tampa Bay community by sponsoring this iconic
event since 1967, when the pageant was founded by the Chapter. We have used this platform to pro-
mote high scholastic standards and provide a format for college bound young ladies to present their tal-
ents to the community. Since the inception of this community treasured event, the members of Gam-
ma Theta Omega Chapter have awarded hundreds of scholarships to deserving young people in the
Tampa Bay community.
We believe the ten young ladies presented here tonight will use their words to shape, inspire, persuade
and motivate a new generation with Purpose, Power and Potential.
To the parents of the contestants we say, “Thank you,” for sharing your beautiful daughters with us and
allowing us to share them in such a meaningful way with our community. It is with much love and
gratitude that I thank the members of the 2018 MTAT Advisory Pageant Committee who have worked
endlessly for the last four months to make this a production to remember always. To the beautiful
members of Gamma Theta Omega Chapter, thank you for once again meeting the needs of our youth.
Your dedication to service is unparalleled in the community!
Serving to make a Difference,
Tangela D. DuPree
2018 General Chairman

2017 Miss Teenage Tampa Contestants

The Miss Teenage Tampa Scholarship Pageant (MTAT) was founded in 1967 as a means to pro-
mote high scholastic standards and provide a format for college bound young ladies to present
their talents. Activities surrounding the
pageant provide experiences which contribute to the cultural heritage, enrichment and personal
growth of contestants.
The pageant is the signature fundraiser for the Gamma Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc. In addition to financing the pageant, it also generates the funds for the com-
munity scholarships, Heritage Awards and other program activities. The community scholarships
are awarded by partnering with the Hillsborough Education Foundation which provides a list of
eligible candidates. Some of these scholarships are matched by Hillsborough Community Col-
lege. The Heritage Awards are presented to the children of active Gamma Theta Omega members
who are graduating from high school. Since the inception of the pageant, Gamma Theta Omega
has awarded over 400 scholarships to young ladies in the Tampa Bay community.
