EDUCATION CHANGEMAKERS

WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 51 be judged by the number of applications that the B-School attracts and the alumni that it has. Also, the consulting assignments taken by the faculty members and the revenue generated through this channel, the management development programmes offered to the corporate, the case studies that are written can be considered while B-Schools are ranked. This is one reason that many IITs are ranked above IIMs, and also above several private B-schools like SIBM- Pune which are known for management education in this country. Diversity and inclusion (D&I) are major planks of the corporate world. How is the institute sensitising students for future corporate roles when they will have to rise above biases while taking important decisions as honchos? Indian B-Schools are curating MBA curriculum to help sensitise future managers about aspects related to D&I. But this is found only as an elective subject. It is not common to find it as a course title. For example, at SIBM Pune, a course description of ‘Organisational Behaviour’ or ‘Managing &Leading’ in organisations will mention D&I. Therefore, D&I is an implicit part of the curriculum. Also, there are subjects like Competing Globally, Foreign Market Development, Managing Global Business Environments, International Marketing, Intercultural ManageThe focus of B -Schools has moved from just creating graduates who are job-ready to creating graduates who are self-aware and are responsible leaders, who are able to take critical decisions in business with their potential impact on people and multiple stakeholders in mind MBA (Innovation and Entrepreneurship) programmes. What are B-School expectations from accreditation and ranking initiatives? What parameters need to be added? The rankings of B-Schools both by Indian and International agencies place a huge emphasis on research. Almost 50 per cent to 60 per cent of the score is allotted to research and publication. This might suit good for an engineering school or a medical school and not for B-School. The voting of academicians and corporate is also given a huge weightage in ranking. While this looks good on paper, there is always a chance for this to be skewed. The stature of B-School has to ment, International Managerial Policies and Strategies etc. which focus on including aspects related to diversity. Students at SIBM Pune are also made to work in diverse groups, so that they rise above biases while taking important decisions as corporate honchos. How is SIBM sensitising students on the environment and sustainability front? The Social, Entrepreneurship and Consulting Cell (SECC) is a student-driven body at SIBM Pune and one of the nine teams of the student council. The team functions under three wings — Social, Entrepreneurship and Consulting. The main aim of the SECC is to bring about a change in the minds of students, inspire them to take up entrepreneurial activities, build the startup ecosystem on the campus and sensitising students on the environment and sustainability front. SECC conducts various events and works with an intention to promote and sensitise students on the environment and sustainability front. This ensures that students learn by knowing, being and doing. Be it clean campus initiative or reducing the plastic usage or planting trees, a range of sustainable practices are promoted by the council. How can we move towards more quality placement that better meets student aspirations? The quality of placements depends on the quality of students who join the B-School. At SIBM Pune we select 180 students from thousands of students who aspire to join the programme. Hence the placements statistics are always “outstanding” for an MBA graduate from SBIM Pune. The students must remember that while they take up their first job offer immediately after MBA, they have their entire career ahead of them. Many do not take this into consideration. leading to errors in the calculation of the Return on Investment.

52 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM BSCHOOL SPECIAL stablished in 2011, IIM Udaipur offers full-time two-year MBA, besides one-year specialised programmes and PG diploma for working executives, among other courses. Joel Xavier of the institute describes how it is enabling student transformation. Excerpts: How is your B-School aligning with the changed thrust as envisaged in NEP, the increased emphasis on skilling and entrepreneurship and online learning? It is important to understand that management education is complex. Industry appreciates and recruits those graduates who demonstrate that they have embodied the conceptual knowledge and show the potential to apply it. This kind of education requires not just quality inputs from expert faculty, but also the lived experience that teaches you how to sharpen your critical thinking skills day in and day out, productively collaborate with others, and build a capacity to integrate and apply knowledge in real-world situations. These are the key focus areas of the ManageJoel Xavier, Head, Centre for Teaching and Learning, IIM Udaipur, talks about the skills that the institute is imparting to students E By Upasana LIVED EXPERIENCES TO SHARPEN SKILLS ment programme at IIM Udaipur. Imparting domain-relevant skills and use of technology – whether it is online classrooms or new tools and techniques – are additional aspects that support the mission. What is it that B-Schools have to offer for the empowerment of Tier-II to IV cities and towns and rural areas? Talking specifically about students coming from predominantly rural backgrounds, what we have observed is that there is very little difference in self-perception when we compare them with those who come from an urban background. They are just as confident, self-assured, and comfortable in a B-School environment as their urban peers. While social and mainstream me-

WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 53 An ESG perspective is built into all major courses. The student committees and clubs managing the infrastructure and dining facilities keep regular track of energy consumption, water conservation, waste management and other related aspects. Part of the campus at IIM Udaipur is envisioned as a biosphere featuring a protected forest for local flora and fauna. dia may have some role to play here, it has also to do with the life stage at which people seek MBA degree. Our entering students have typically completed 15-17 years of education and then 2-3 years of work experience. By this time, they have made up for any lack of exposure they may have had. As an institute, IIM Udaipur is committed to contributing to the development of the region where we are situated. We have a number of initiatives where we engage with the local community and NGOs on various developmental initiatives in areas like education, healthcare and livelihoods. IIM Udaipur students also participate in a rural immersion programme where they are hosted by a rural household for a week and engage deeply with the local community to understand the reality of rural India. What kind of faculty upgradation and exchange programmes have you undertaken? IIM Udaipur as part of its Vision 2030 has identified two key focus areas – research and student transformation. As part of the focus on supporting student transformation – it has established the Centre for Teaching and Learning. The first objective of the centre is to support the development of teaching expertise among the faculty of IIM Udaipur so that they are able to deliver a transformational learning experience. The second objective is to enable students to become better learners by equipping them with life-long learning skills and by building a culture that prioritises academic excellence. How is IIM Udaipur sensitising students on environment and sustainability? Environmental consciousness and ecological sustainability is a core value at IIM Udaipur. It is practised in all aspects of student life. It is a key element of one of the six learning goals adopted by IIM Udaipur. How do B-Schools continue to be sought-after campuses at a time when Indian students are keen on overseas degrees? The demographic profile and intent of Indian students seeking master’s degree abroad in disciplines other than management is very different from those seeking Management Master’s in India. In other disciplines your probability of getting scholarships or other work opportunities are better and these help offset the high costs involved. That is not necessarily the case with Master’s in Management where the fees could be much higher. Another reason is that career services facilities abroad are conceptualised and implemented differently than the way it works in India. In India, most top-tier B-Schools tend to place nearly 100 per cent of their graduates before convocation. According to GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) data, in the last year this number in business schools abroad has gone up from 80 per cent to 86 per cent. Students are aware of this difference in career opportunities. IIM Udaipur is committed to contributing to the development of the region where we are situated. We have a number of initiatives where we engage with the local community and NGOs on various developmental initiatives in areas like education

54 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM BSCHOOL SPECIAL aunched in 1965 in the financial capital of the country and with an alumni base of over 8,000 today, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Mumbai, has provided management leadership to the country through its range of programmes – Master of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Master of Management Studies (MMS) with specialisation in Finance, Marketing, Operations, HR and Systems, MSc Finance and part-time MMS programme. The institute is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Srinivasan R. Iyengar, Director & Professor, describes the emphasis given to knowledge, innovation and creativity, saying, “In the current competitive environment, a knowledge-based economy plays an imperative role in higher education institutions. As a learning institution, JBIMS will be capable of delivering knowledge and skills, JBIMS is aligned to the real needs of the 21st Century knowledge economy and modulates its programmes accordingly L By Vasudha Mukherjee ENGAGING STUDENTS FOR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE producing excellent graduates, improving innovation and creativity.” Talking about the infrastructure augmentation at the institute, he says, “We witnessed that good investments for renovating buildings, classrooms, library, and equipment are crucial elements of learning environments, quality classrooms and good library well equipped with hardware and software facilities. Our teaching pedagogy is case-study based and using simulations for practical learning experience. We developed our own customised LMS for better instruction that improves student outcomes.” Emphasis Areas The curriculum has been designed with the help of industry experts and learning happens through case studies, field visits projects and assignments. Of course, the location of the institute in the heart of the institute lends itself to this approach very well. The manner in which the curriculum has been designed, its objectives can be amalgamated with sustainable initiative to improve learning. “There is a growing recognition of the significance of exposing students to sustainability education, which involves introducing the principles, values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of learning. Linking such sustainability initiatives with academic disciplines enhances student engagement and brings about progressive environmental stewardship,” says Iyengar. Yet another emphasis area is fostering entrepreneurship culture, on which the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 also lays immense emphasis. Iyengar says, “Entrepre-

Engaging students in the learning process has become an irreplaceable source of competitive advantage for management educators. Business schools are focussing on development of soft skills, analytical skills, and general know-how. Students can no longer be selected on the basis on their academic credentials alone. Instead, their ability to work in teams, their communication skills and their leadership potential need to be taken into considerations. The success of a business school in funeurship is a learning process that encompasses risk taking, tenacity, and opportunity seeking. This implies that entrepreneurial knowledge could be acquired through learning. We at JBIMS believe in identifying entrepreneurship as a creation of new businesses or business units within an existing organisation – corporate venturing or intrapreneurship. We prepare students to work in a dynamic, rapidly changing entrepreneurial and global environment.” Covid Response Discussing the swift transition to digitisation during the pandemic, Iyengar speaks for the entire B-school fraternity when he says, “Covid-19's suddenness, ambiguity, and volatility forced the educational system to react quickly and adapt to the new learning landscape…. Since most programmes are now virtual, geographic boundaries do not matter. Students can enrol in virtual courses offered by universities abroad. This competition is likely to grow, forcing Indian institutions to quickly improve and evolve their programme design and delivery. The majority of the Busiture will depend on collaboration between all the key stakeholders and ability to create dedicated strategy for managing relationships. JBIMS is aligned to these needs of business and corporate world, and that has been reflected in the recent placements. As Iyengar says, “The final placements are testimony to the fact that we take consistent efforts in upgrading our academic curriculum to ensure our students receive the best of industrial learning owing to our distinguished faculty. Consulting emerged as the top recruiting sector with offers being rolled out to a whopping 39 per cent of the batch, making JBIMS one of the most sought-after campuses for students aspiring to get into the consulting domain across the country.” According to the information shared by the institute, the average annual CTC this year stands at Rs 27.63 lakh per annum, marking a jump of around 20 per cent over the number reported last year. The median annual CTC stands at Rs 26.49 lakh per annum, with over 10 percent of the batch securing offers above Rs 34.18 lakh per annum and over 25 percent in excess of Rs 31.54 lakh per annum. Our teaching pedagogy is casestudy based and using simulations for practical learning experience. We developed our own customised LMS for better instruction that improves student outcomes

56 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM BSCHOOL SPECIAL unning a range of programmes – flagship MBA, specialised MBA programmes and parttime MBA, KJ Somaiya Institute of Management emphasises change management as the world is grappling with massive transformations in all walks of life. Institute Director Monica Khanna sheds light on the approach to this. Excerpts: What new components have been added by the institute in its programmes? The focus of B-School education has changed / has to change to take cognizance of the rapidly changing macro environmental factors, socio-economic-political factors and climate changes. The students of business management must be empowered to face ambiguities and adversities through coaching on subjects such as transformational leadership, ability to contextualise strategies as per local or global consumer / market demands, design thinking to plan for industry to move towards circular economy initiatives and so on. Monica Khanna, Director, KJ Somaiya Institute of Management, Somaiya Vidyavihar University talks about how the institute is orienting its students towards changing educational and work dynamics R By Vasudha Mukherjee Students Must Be Empowered To Face Ambiguities This is possible through new components such as experiential learning opportunities, giving “freedom of possibilities” to students to select subjects of their choice for study and work integrated learning plans. Is the inclination towards generalist B-Schools and MBA programmes or towards specialised B-Schools? The tectonic shifts in business environment and technological advances is ensuring that the shelf life of an educational degree is substantially reduced – students of an MBA programme would necessarily have to continuously upgrade themselves. This requires the existence of both the generalist MBA and specialised programmes in Business Management, along with multi-disciplinary MBA programmes

At KJ Somaiya Institute of Management, the Institute has created several such voluntary platforms like Ankur ELI, but going forward there are plans to make these initiatives including rural immersions as compulsory part of the curriculum. How is your B-School sensitising students on the environment and sustainability front, and what work is being done in this such as Healthcare Management, Sports Management, Business Analytics etc. What are B-School expectations from accreditation and ranking initiatives? What parameters need to be added/focused on? Accreditations and rankings help an institute to identify its current competitive position vis-a-vis other institutes, but they should also be mentoring in nature to help institutes to develop and grow to their full potential, based on their local contexts. The accreditation and ranking agencies are privy to the functioning and challenges of several B-Schools – and sharing of best practices within permissible limits of knowledge sharing would be helpful. The end objective being to develop the education sector to its full potential and serve the student community in optimal manner. Diversity and inclusion are major planks of the corporate world. How is the institute sensitising students for future corporate roles when they will have to rise above biases while taking important decisions as honchos? The best way to expose students to diversity & inclusion initiatives is to expose them to community service for the under privileged, physically and mentally challenged persons, elderly people with no support systems and so on. This should be part of their curriculum and will help them to appreciate that empathy and the ability to carry all types of people along is an important component of handling leadership positions. These can also be opportunities for creating corporate social regard on the campus? Some of the initiatives on environment and sustainability are teaching the course on Sustainable Development as part of the curriculum, creation of Center of Excellence on Sustainable Development, conduct of research-based conference and publications in leading journals, creation of RASI (Regenerative Agriculture Sustainable Initiative) at the Somaiya Vidyavihar University level. Our faculty are part of a British Council funded research project on Circular Economy and as part of this project, three of our students were sent for a workshop on Circular Economy held at Aston University, the UK. The country is going through a paradigm shift in education with NEP, online classrooms and an emphasis on skilling and entrepreneurship. How is Your B-school aligning with these changing realities? KJ Somaiya Institute of Management has aligned itself to these paradigm shifts in education with NEP by creating the “Freedom of Possibilities” initiative. The institute is part of the multi-disciplinary Somaiya Vidyavihar University which offers education in diverse fields like Engineering, Design, Dharma Studies, Yoga, Music, Sports and Liberal Arts, besides RIIDL (Incubation Centre), partnerships with international universities for student exchange and research, rural immersions and many other initiatives. Our students can choose their courses of study and plan their careers accordingly to simultaneously pursue their passion and adapt to the changing environmental conditions. Infrastructure & Research Push Enabling quality education in these programmes is the infrastructure augmentation that the institute has gone for. Director Pawan Kumar Singh informs, “The first phase of the state-of-the-art campus of IIM Tiruchirappalli was completed five years back. All the basic infrastructure needed for an integrated B-School are available with us. We have recently created a Finance Lab to help students understand nuances of stock market. We are also adding new hostels and classrooms for our capacity building. There is a plan for state-of-the-art Management Development Centre and high-quality outdoor sports facility. Apart from open-air amphitheatre, we have created Panchvati Garden for meditation and yogic practices.” Research is a key thrust area and the institute provides healthy academic environment for creation and implementation of knowledge in the form of research, publication, project implementation and consultancy. As Singh says, “Our faculty regularly publish in top- quality journals. Other type of publications includes books and informative as well as impactful articles. Our publications are in almost all the fields of management including theoretical and practical research. We emphasise research and teaching through electives in the zone of confluence of multiple subjects. In the area of interdisciplinary work, we emphasise on Indian insight of management based on our profound literature and scriptures.”

WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 61 As the institute website informs, there is also an elective on morality and public policy designed around movies, nudging students to think of solutions to the dilemmas presented in the movie plots. That, Singh says, is the benefit of a generalist B-School and programmes. “While generalist B-Schools can always add cutting-edge specialisation and electives to their MBA programmes making the programmes as good as specialised programmes, the specialised B-Schools cannot easily gear up to project their specialised programme as well integrated MBA programme.” He adds that due to the design and structure of ranking agencies too, general MBA programmes enjoy advantage over a specialised management programme. “Many specialised B-Schools maintaining significant high academic standards do not get commensurate ranking getting their standard properly reflected in their scheme of things.” The Diversity Agenda Diversity in workplaces is a prominent discourse today and several leading corporates have evolved policies of zero tolerance regarding discrimination on caste, colour, creed, gender or geographical grounds. How are B-Schools ingraining that spirit among future managers, needs to be looked at. Making Students Future Ready The main objective of the PGDM, as per the institute website, is “to develop young women and men into competent professional managers, capable of working in any sector of organised activity”. And true enough, the core subjects expose students to a whole gamut of domain areas, while elective courses provide greater insights to students in their areas of interest. This is facilitated through case methods, learning on field, guest lectures and learning from peers. Singh says, “We have mechanism for regular interaction with our alumni and other practitioners in industry. This helps us to know the requirement of bridging the gap between our curriculum and industry requirements.” Singh informs, “Our ‘no to discrimination’ allows everyone to fructify in the domains of their individuality and social interaction. We also emphasise on inclusion of such issues in regular education as well as sensitising students on diversity and inclusions through cutting-edge electives on the theme. The institute’s endeavour to develop humanistic principles was manifested during the pandemic. The institute conducted online exams, made arrangements for availability of e-books, conducted knowledge sessions with industry experts for the benefit of students, and organised awareness camps in nearby villages regarding prevention from Covid, appropriate use of masks, distributed masks and other relief material. The institute tied up with CSR clubs of other IIMs for relief work. Placements During the placements for the passing out batch in 2022, 228 offers were made by 110 companies in the fields of Sales & Marketing, Finance, Consulting, IT & Analytics, Operations, and HR. As per the details furnished to BW, this year, the highest and average CTC stood at Rs 34 lakh per annum and 17.01 lakh per annum, respectively. Further, the campus also witnessed a tremendous increase in Consulting offers (47 per cent of total offers), “a true testament to students' potential at IIM Tiruchirappalli”. Talking about the continuing relevance of management education, he says it has become far more attractive to pursue B-School education despite the economic meltdown in the last decade and the pandemic lasting two years, given that the opportunities offered to the students are way more lucrative than what it was before. “Thus, even though education has become slightly more expensive in the recent years for average Indian families, the returns have become equally fruitful.” Leveraging Management Education Kakani is keen that the passouts of the institute imbibe the management lessons in the true sense. I would suggest to them to be patient enough to understand the working of the business world and focus on gaining some industrial experience before hopping onto the management bandwagon. Its 64 permanent and 20 guest and visiting faculty have ably taken on this task of nurturing future management leaders. Director Deepak Kumar Srivastava talks about the pedagogical approach of the institute, while also sharing his perspective on management education as it has evolved. Excerpts: Post the economic downturn of 2008-2012 and now Covid, is the B-School education viable and affordable for average Indian families? Regardless of the economic environment, a quality business education will always be relevant for businesses. Covid-19 has altered the entire landscape of business school education delivery. Maintaining teaching efficacy and learning outcomes has become considerably more competitive. Because of this, B-School education in India is at a crucial moment. L Considering the fee structure of a good B-School education in the United States, Europe or India is affordable if B-schools are able to meet market demands. For an average Indian family, an MBA from IIMs offers great value. Comparing the placement statistics to the tuition fee structure reveals, for instance, that the entire tuition fee can be recouped after one to two years of post-MBA employment. Students frequently go for loans, which they return at varying periods. In addition, because of the IIM brand, both private and public

The institute has promoted and developed interdisciplinary research culture over the years by promoting collaborations both within the different academic areas of the institution, and also by partnering with premier academic institutions in India and across the globe. Diversity and inclusion are major planks of the corporate world. How is the institute sensitising students for future corporate roles when they will have to rise above biases while taking important decisions as honchos? Diversity and inclusivity are values that IIM Ranchi aspires to uphold in letter and spirit. Promoting diversity and inclusiveness among IIM Ranchi's faculty members and students is one of the institution's main focuses. To encourage diverse perspectives on a range of social and business issues, IIM Ranchi actively encourages cultural, educational, and other demographic diversity. IIM Ranchi runs a variety of programmes all year round to spread knowledge and promote an inclusive atmosphere. Based on the feedback you would be receiving from the alumni base, what are the things that students learned on campus, that the corporate world invariably makes them unlearn? As part of accreditation initiative, IIM Ranchi is already in the process of gathering feedback from a variety of indirect sources (i.e., alumni surveys and interactions, recruiter's perspective) on how the curriculum may be redesigned to meet market demands. Working closely with development organisations and in association with the central and state governments, the autonomous institute aims to empower rural managers and contribute to the balanced development of the nation. Leading the institute is Umakant Dash as Director. With nearly two decades T of experience in academia and research with institutes of national and international repute, Dash shares insights into the roles of academia and governance in policy implementation for rural development. Overcoming Pandemic Setbacks Part of IRMA’s Postgraduate Programmes includes having students spend two months in a village to help understand the rural ecosystem. This is to ensure that students are able to relate to course material and to encourage them to find realistic, workable solutions that address real-world challenges faced by people in rural areas. “Our task is to train and upskill mid-level and top-level managers in development and government sectors. You call this Street-level Bureaucracy. You cannot successfully implement a new policy without understanding the nuances of it,” explains Dash. Academically the biggest challenge for all institutions was moving online. From faculty to students getting used to a new platform was the largest challenge from an academic perspective. With time and support from all stakeholders involved, education continued as everyone embraced technology. The institute was able to turn this into an opportunity, as forcing the entire nation to go online allowed them to connect with the remotest of villages. “While it was a proper time. Many people lost jobs due to the pandemic and now the government has the responsibility to ensure the livelihood of people during the time of crisis. “Irrespective of the situation in the country, some minimum assurance should be given to households,” states Dash. Furthermore, it is time to take a closer look at the employment gaps between different regions of the nation. Dash states, “I think now is the time when instead of a lot of people migrating to the urban areas, we have to create employment opportunities in the and around rural areas where 70 per cent of our population resides.” Ongoing Schemes & Collaborations An ongoing project of the institute is the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) in Uttar Pradesh. PMSBY is a social health insurance scheme done in collaboration with the government. IRMA has also signed an MoU with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to work with villages, taking a bottom-up approach. You call this Street-level Bureaucracy difficult time for students who were not able to optimally use the experience, virtual connectivity allowed us the opportunity to connect with some of the most remote areas that we were not able to reach before.” Wherever possible, students did try to visit villages, opting for shortterm visits to collect data and information to analyse back home. Moreover, the pandemic has highlighted the need for better connectivity with remote regions. Dash speaks about setting up extension centres in these areas to give training, skilling and providing certificate courses through virtual mode. He states, “I think this is where professional institutions need to spend some time, energy and resources. To upskill people in rural areas by opening extension centres and tying up with local schools and panchayats.” The collaboration element is operative as offering courses is just the first step, creating awareness is key. Dash points out that even today, most households in rural areas are not aware of welfare schemes being launched, much less education and skilling opportunities available. “As academic institutions, we need to help the government in collecting information, processing data and generating evidence that can help policymakers understand whether the policy is working or not; then how they can make it more effective” he says. Creating Jobs in Rural Areas The pandemic saw the majority of the rural population returning to their villages and taking up jobs in rural areas. With the uncertainty that the corona virus presented, bringing people back to urban areas is an ongoing issue. While institutes and industry are making efforts to bridge this gap, Dash believes that the government's role is equally if not more important when it comes to preserving the livelihood of the people. According to Dash, the government has to not only ensure the livelihood of people but do this in

We realised that the switch to online teaching – though ‘convenient’ at such difficult times – was putting a lot of stress on a student’s brain and brawn, due to the long hours she had to sit in front of a computer, besides making the instructor tired of shouting inside a virtual classroom. So, we came up with the 30 + 45 model, wherein every 75-minute session was broken down into a prerecorded video of 30 minutes that a student can watch at their leisure and online teaching of 45 minutes; even when we switched to the hybrid mode, the 30-minute video continued, along with 45 minutes of offline/class-room teaching that was transmitted to the off-campus students who chose to stay home. freedom to pursue research along with performing their teaching and administrative duties. This has led to our faculty research papers being published in ABDC, ABS and FT50-ranked international journals and heralding MICA into the top league among India’s 20 foremost management institutions for research output. In addition, MICA’s unique International Immersion, whereby a group of 14-15 faculty members visit foreign universities, interact with their academicians, and explore joint projects and potential collaborations, also furthers this goal towards more interdisciplinary research.

BSCHOOL SPECIAL 72 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM he Management Schools, I mean the good ones, have been able to keep their course content industry relevant and up to date. In fact, these schools take a lot of effort to keep themselves abreast with the newer developments, which are then methodically integrated into the curriculum. With ‘bias towards action’ based pedagogy, the idea in these schools has been to integrate theory with practice, which envisages developing the students into practitioners. This is augmented with multiple points of industry connect, be it in terms of internship, live projects, getting industry experts into the campuses as guest faculty, or to deliver guest lectures on industry-relevant topics, coordinating with the alumni to communicate the industry expectations to the students, and even to handhold them as they prepare to become practitioners, and so on. Most good schools also include options for global engagement, be it in the form of student exchanges, involvement of faculty from abroad, or short-term visits to reputed foreign business schools. No wonder then that many students summarise their time in our campus at IIM Shillong as a ‘life changing experience’. This has seen new classrooms, residences, centres, etc. being built across the campus. In addition to the infrastructure already built up to support the activities of the Institute, constructions are going on for classroom augmentation, new hostel blocks, dedicated infrastructure for centres of the institute, and sports and recreation facilities for the residents. There is also focus on technology; a massive upscaling of IT infrastructure has been done, and more work is under process. On the classroom front, in addition to the usual classroom enabled with modern digital technologies, classrooms with technology-enabling hybrid classes have been/are being implemented. These are envisaged to allow students attending in person as well as online to have an immersive classroom experience, dissolving the barrier between those attending in person and those online to a major extent. Some of the lessons learnt during Covid-induced online classes have been incorporated in designing such immersive experience for the students. New/enhanced IT systems have been implemented cater to all IIM Shillong learners – within or outside of the campus. There has thus been major augmentation in collection, which also is a continuing initiative. Sustainable Campus Environment and sustainability are part of daily discourse at IIM Shillong, starting from day one at the campus. In addition to specific courses on sustainability and business, most of the other courses also have facets of these built in into their contents. The institute has options for environment-friendly transport in the form of cycles and electric vehicles for students’ commute, like many other campuses across the globe. Plastic bottles are not used on the campus, and for many years, use of plastic bags has been discouraged. But the ethos goes much beyond. Being situated in the North Eastern part of the country also helps in this endeavour. The population across the region are mostly tribal, and their indigenous practices are majorly environment and sustainability friendly. The students are exposed to these practices, which help them learn from the traditional knowledge, and thus become more sensitive to sustainable practices. Meeting Student Aspirations The industry is always in lookout for the right talent. As the economy gets more knowledge-oriented, there will always be demand for such talent in general, barring some transient aberrations. The quality of placement thus depends upon the extent to which the candidate has the skill and knowledge, and is capable of thinking though them to implementing in practice. Business schools like IIM Shillong, through their multi-pronged pedagogical approach, try to equip their students accordingly. It is not just about getting into a reputed business school, but also how one invests the time during the course of the programme in the school, decides the final outcome. As the economy gets more knowledgeoriented, there will always be demand for such talent in general, barring some transient aberrations across all functional domains of the institute – programmes, executive education, admissions, placements, administration, etc., aimed to improve the efficiency of the processes all across. The library also has seen a major upgradation in the last five years both in terms of contents and variety. This further got into focus, as the resources needed to be made available to the students/scholars who have enrolled for programmes without leaving their jobs. The idea now is to procure content most of which can be accessed online, of course, with necessary security and authentication infrastructure, to

We have adopted methods that help students acquire a more focused approach toward understanding the industry requirements and prepare themselves to be ready as per the current and future needs of the industry. What has been your biggest challenge as a director of a distinguished institution like IIM? How did you manage to overcome them? My biggest challenge at IIM Rohtak was building the institute's culture. IIM Rohtak was operating from a rented building on the campus of a traditional university for its first eight years. IIMs operate uniquely distinctive from conventional universities. Hence, the challenge was still to promote the unique IIM culture in the institute and thereby delineate its identity in the eyes of students, industry, and faculty. We had to complete phase 1 of our campus to allow students some space. The second challenge was to foster research orientation among faculty. The institute did not have many top-ranked journal publications in 2017, and now we proudly claim to have more than 35 A*/A-category publications in an academic year. Finally, getting the best corporations to come to the campus to recruit was very challenging. We worked meticulously with industry, organised management conclaves in the campus and other metro cities for industry leaders to interact with the students and encouraged virtual industrial visits, among other activities. I can proudly say that today, the average salary of a student of IIM Rohtak is Rs 16.06 lakh per annum which is over 40 per cent higher than in 2017. And with the AMBA accreditation received, IIM Rohtak is now part of the top two per cent of business schools worldwide. audit for the state of Haryana during Covid and based on the same we offered various suggestions to public and private hospitals. We also formulated the food grain supply network during the pandemic. Additionally, we examined workplace management strategies for workers at the cutting edge during the same period. Our work was recognised by WHO (World Health Organization). We also have several contract and adjunct faculty members from some of the best international universities in North America, Europe, and Asia. With our continuous interactions with business corporations, government bodies and policymakers, we have created a learning environment that will uniquely blend theory and practice in imparting management education. This blend is necessary for creating cutting-edge professionals in business management. Recently, we offered our students opportunity to examine live projects in rural parts of India. The students are engaged in rural immersive projects and other research-based mandatory projects to develop research orientation amongst the students. They are encouraged to write case studies with the faculty members. We foster student-industry interaction through management summits, leadership lecture series, virtual tours, etc., that keep the students updated on the latest trends and demands of the industry.

IIM Kashipur has taken multiple measures; our student counselling policy and the academic advisory policy have been designed keeping these realities and segments in mind and they are able to take care of many concerns that we have here. WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 79 We are no longer just teaching students how to solve structured problems but are looking at the ability to solve unstructured and semi-structured problems on skilling. Also, we are one of the few reputed business schools to offer new venture creation and entrepreneurship as a separate specialisation. We are a part of BITS Pilani, an institute of eminence recognised by the Government Of India, and our students have access to BITS Pilani’s incubation programme and alumni infrastructure. Finally, we offer a lot of flexibility to students to craft combinations of courses and personalise their MBA journey. What kind of faculty upgradation and exchange programmes have you undertaken? We draw our faculty from the best institutes in the world. Faculty from NYU, Kellogg, Wharton, Cornell, Oxford and SMU have all taught at BITSoM. In the second year of the programme, our students are offered an opportunity to do a proprietary, tailored two-week immersion at London Business School on Global Leadership Perspectives. They not only learn from top LBS faculty, but also serve as consultants to LBS alumni entrepreneurs, who offer them current business challenges to tackle. How is BITSoM sensitising students on the environment and sustainability front? All our students undertake a set of live projects in the social sector, where they work with NGOs to tackle strategic and managerial issues facing the NGO. These projects give them hands-on exposure to social issues, and sensitise them to SDGs and the real challenge of implementation. We also have multiple courses that tackle the linkage between business and society, and incorporate courses like Design Thinking and Systems Thinking into the curriculum. Many aspects of energy management and sustainability are embedded in the design of our upcoming main campus at Kalyan. How have B-Schools continue to be sought-after campuses at a time when there is a growing trend for Indian students to seek master's degrees across disciplines from overseas campuses? I think one reason is that for the top schools, job markets in India are very strong, and there is a fair amount of industry integration. The high-quality job prospects imply that Indian students can not only find top jobs within India, but can work with many international companies and leverage their careers to global roles. You do not always need a global MBA to have a global career. Given this, and the relatively lower fee structure (as compared to western business schools) the return on investment of top Indian schools is very strong. The country is going through a paradigm shift in education with NEP, online classrooms, an emphasis on skilling and entrepreneurship. How is Your B-School aligning with these changing realities? To begin with, we have strongly embedded Liberal Arts courses in the curriculum. Two, through a unique set of courses titled Winning in the Workplace, we bring a deep focus ise the universality of management, and benefit from experiencing the practice of management in ambiguous multi-stakeholder environments. Finally, students will typically have multiple distinct careers in their lifetime. This implies the ability to reflect, learn and adapt in a variety of circumstances. Self-awareness and learning agility are imperatives for tomorrow’s leaders, and progressive campuses will build a stronger emphasis on soft skills, self-awareness and learnability. Often this will imply individualised coaching and mentoring, and enabling students to personalise their MBA learning.

BSCHOOL SPECIAL 80 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM he School of Management of Mahindra University in Hyderabad is barely 18 months old. But S Ramakrishna Velamuri, Dean of the School, reveals that through its curriculum that blends academic rigour with academic relevance, it has already created a stir among students. Excerpts: Post the economic downturn of 2008-2012 and now Covid, is the B-school education viable and affordable for average Indian families? The undergraduate students of the Mahindra University School of Management can pursue Masters studies, such as a general management focused MBA, or a broad range of functional and sectoral specialisations such as Finance, Marketing, International Business, Data Analytics, Supply Chain Management, and Healthcare, to name just a few. Since they are highly employable when they graduate, they can also work for a few years before taking up higher studies. Our USP is that the students will graduate with a sound foundation in business and economics as well as the ability to function in an increasingly digitalised economy. The MBA degree is the most demanded postgraduate qualification in the world, because graduates are in high demand from industry. Alumni of MBA programmes can be found at all levels of organisations and in all sectors, including in the founding and top management teams of some of the most successful entrepreneurial ventures. The MBA programme does a great job of socialising the students in the language of business and prepares them for a successful career in industry. WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 81 functions and being part of a multi-disciplinary university affords a great opportunity for our faculty to work with colleagues from other schools. Diversity and inclusion are major planks of the corporate world. How is the institute sensitising students for future corporate roles when they will have to rise above biases while taking important decisions as honchos? I am delighted to say that in our undergraduate programme, we have almost a 50-50 gender split among students. We will strive for a similar gender balance in the postgraduate programmes also and amongst our faculty also. The university is setting up three centres, one each for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). In the Social vertical, we will be emphasising diversity, equity and inclusion. I have observed that our students are already highly sensitised to these issues and in fact demand that their educational institutions and workplaces address them. I am confident that our future is in good hands. What are the things that students learn in B-Schools, that the corporate world invariably makes them unlearn? We are barely 18 months old and have therefore not graduated our first batches. However, the word has spread among our prospective students that our curriculum combines academic rigour with industry relevance and that we have an exceptionally well-qualified faculty team. We are confident that our students will not have to unlearn anything when they join the corporate world. the Schools of Management, Law, Education and Media Studies. We had a meeting recently with one of the leading international architects to discuss the design of the new School of Management building, which should be ready for us to move into by 2024. What is the research thrust of the institute? Also, which are the prominent areas of interdisciplinary work at the institute? The School of Management has hired full-time faculty who have world-class research training and the ability to publish in the top peer reviewed journals in their respective fields. I can say that in the approximately 18 months since we have been in existence, we have already become one of the most productive faculty teams in India on a per capita basis, with multiple publications in journals that appear in the Financial Times 50 list and in the ABDC A*, A and B journal lists. Our faculty are undertaking collaborative research between departments, such as between Marketing and Decision Sciences, but also with our sister schools, such as between the Department of Mathematics at the Engineering School and our Finance Department. Real world problems lie at the intersection of multiple disciplines and What has been the major infrastructure thrust at your institute since inception? We are fortunate to have a 110- acre beautiful green campus in the northern part of Hyderabad, a city that has been designated by the Central Government as one of the nine education hubs in the country. We have state-of-the-art classrooms, engineering labs, a high-performance computing centre, sports facilities, library, student accommodation and dining areas.
