INTERVIEW 116 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM arvin Krislov took on the role of President at Pace University in 2017. The 13,000-student university was founded in 1906 and is based in New York City and Westchester. The motto of Opportunitas, a Latin phrase, expresses their mission of providing quality education and skilling to all its pupils including first generation, immigrants and foreign students. The focus of the higher education institute also extends to providing students with great opportunities to begin their careers. What makes Pace University stand out among other higher education institutes in the USA? First and foremost, the campus is set in the heart of New York City. We are very close to Wall Street, across the street from City Hall, near important government buildings and the United Nations. We are in the business centre. What really sets Pace University apart is that our education combines both in- and out-of-classroom experiences such as internships and research projects. As a result, when students graduate, they have already many professional opportunities that not only launch and integrate them into career, but also lead to outstanding career outcomes. What makes certain student applications stand out? When our admissions counsellors look at applications they look primarily at the academic background, but they also look for personal qualities, attributes and initiatives taken by students. For example, whether they've started a business or helped their family during an important time, taken leadership roles in their school or community, etc. We are looking for ambitious people who will take full advantage of Pace and of being in New York. We call Marvin Krislov, President, Pace University shares his insights on studying abroad and the importance of equal opportunity in education in an exclusive interaction with BW Businessworld By Vasudha Mukherjee "We Are Looking For Ambitious People" M Photo credit: Suresh Gola

WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 117 "We Are Looking For Ambitious People" our students ‘go getters’ and that's what we are really looking for in the student body. What kind of financial aid and support programmes do you have in place? We have an office, ‘Pace International’, which helps supports our international students. Services such as housing, medical support, sometimes visa issues, among other can be found here. It covers the panoply of concerns students have. We understand that students are going to come from different financial circumstances and we work very hard with students to make sure that they can have an affordable education. International students are eligible for merit aid the same way that domestic students. We also have a programme called ‘Inspire’ which helps international students learn about entering the workforce. This includes how to put together a resume and how to appeal to US employers. We have many fairs that allows students to make connections. As a result, international students and students from India have a great experience here and find the support they need. What kind of initiatives have you taken to help international students better integrate at Pace? Having been around since 1906, the student, faculty and staff at Pace are very diverse. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is very much at the forefront of our strategic plan. We have alumni mentoring programmes, including people who might have come to the United States as immigrants themselves. The thing that really distinguishes Pace is not only the great opportunity, but the great level of support from the community. It is a very welcoming place and in terms of the Indian community specifically, we have many faculty members from India or whose families are from India. We, also have a very active student organisation called ‘Pace Indian Student Organisation’. We have a lot of Indian students and they're very active. We celebrated Diwali in October and had a big celebration of India 75 with the Council General. What are the collaborations and partnerships with India? We are talking to a lot of academic institutions in India. We already have a partnership with OP Jindal University and BITS. We have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Whistling Woods International. Other arrangements, ranging from exchange programmes, joint degrees to short- and long-term experiences are also being worked on. We encourage faculty research and collaborations, which has been popular, especially among those who have connections in India. Overall, we want to connect with universities and potential partners, as well as meet our Indian alumni base. What kind of initiatives would you like to see from the Indian government? We are excited by what we understand is a very welcome approach to internationalising higher education in India. In this global economy, there's going to continue to be increasingly more international opportunities. Many of our students go to work for global companies that might have offices in Mumbai and New York; they need to be able to move back and forth and understand those different worlds. I want to see an open door to American universities in India and I want to see the American government have the same policy. What’s your personal philosophy on education? The Council general left me with this thought: Goddess Saraswati comes before the Goddess Lakshmi. Though wealth can be defined in many different ways, knowledge comes first. Education produces happiness and opportunities that everyone should have. I want to see an open door to American universities in India and I want to see the American government have the same policy

INTERVIEW 118 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM Guru is the offshoot of 88 Tuition that came about during a discussion on the role of education and the impact high-quality education has had on the personal and professional 88Guru founders Vinod Gupta and Anil Ahuja speak with BW Businessworld about the inputs that go into making this online tutoring platform stand out 88 By Vasudha Mukherjee "LEARNING OUTCOMES AT AFFORDABLE PRICES" ground. Excerpts from an exclusive interview to BW Education: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind 88Guru? K12 education was a new area for us. However, this came as a big adgrowth of the founders of the platform. Based out of Singapore, this brainchild of Vinod Gupta and Anil Ahuja aims to make the opportunity for the high-quality education available to every child irrespective of their economic and social back-

WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 119 What are the challenges of running an online learning platform in the K12 segment? The decision-making and usage process of 88Guru is through the family and not the student themselves. We do not engage with the students directly, nor do we currently allow peer-to-peer interaction as the safety of children online is of the utmost importance. Even the best managed systems have been hacked and the last thing we want to do is to have too much information about children on our system, which potentially exposes the child to unfortunate situations. Therefore, we do not require students to share too much personal data. Peer learning is also an important part of education. How do balance this with security? Balancing the safety and security of the child versus the social interaction is a big concern. We have conducted live classes in Singapore and we found conversations taking place between students sometimes bordering on stuff that is not relevant to our platform. Although there is a clear advantage to students interacting with each other, as an organisation we believe the risk is greater than the reward for the time being. Only when we feel comfortable with the technology and have a system where we can properly monitor interactions and verify identities, will we consider peer-to-peer interactions. How do you stand out among other edtech players? Our qualified, experienced teachers make us stand out. Our price point is our second strength - we are very reasonably priced and affordable for everyone. Furthermore, we allow monthly subscriptions so students can join as per their needs. We also continuously engage with parents and are open to their concerns and suggestions, not leaving the office till every customer request of the day has been addressed. What is your teaching format and who designs the courses? The teaching format is through recorded lectures at designated studios in India. Initially, we started with Classes V to VIII with all subjects - Science, Social Science, English, Maths and Hindi. Within the next year, we plan to launch till Class XII. We have employed some of the best educators from schools around India. They are well trained and have more than 15 years of experience in the classroom and we trust their expertise on the matter. How do you effectively assess the learning outcomes of students? Our learning programme is a threestep process. We first have teaching videos, followed by an assessment and then a review. Unlike a normal class where students have regular lectures and assessments every few months, here we will know within the first week how much the student has retained from the classes. This prevents students from falling behind in their studies. Furthermore, since the videos are recorded, students can replay the lectures at their own pace. Through our ‘Adaptive Worksheets’, students can declare their own difficulty level and the system will generate a worksheet for students to practice on. vantage because while we did not know much about this space, we had the best technology available. We were inspired by the pedagogy in Singapore and we learnt as much as we could to build a programme that focused on delivering strong learning outcomes. The price point also makes our service affordable for everyone. This same ethos has been brought into introducing 88Guru in India. The number 88 in the name ‘88Guru’ is also a strong number that represents prosperity, fortune and good luck in nearly every culture. ‘8’ is also the symbol of infinity flipped, we wanted to bring the same symbol into our work. It is also very easy for people to remember. Do you have any plans to move beyond the online platform? While we have started online, we want to create the option for our tutors to use the programme in a hybrid model. Rather than the company using or implementing a hybrid model, we allow other providers to use our materials to effectively create a hybrid learning environment based on their location, student needs and tutor’s resources. This way they also have the opportunity to create a franchise operation and build their own business based on 88Guru.

INTERVIEW 120 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM hat strengths does Indian industry have that can be further leveraged in the global talent pool? We are looking for any kind of collaboration that we can have in life sciences and tech as India is a huge tech talent pool with a lot of ideas. Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Government of Ontario, Canada, Victor Fedeli speaks about his province extending collaboration with Telangana, industry growth and skill development during his visit to India W By Vasudha Mukherjee “More collaboration and more open dialogue”

WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 121 There are 900,000 people of Indian origin that live in Ontario and we have 75,000 students from India come every year to Ontario because it's a great opportunity to live, explore and expand in the businesses India is one of the number one Life Science locations in the world. Most of the vaccines in the world are made here, so we have a lot to learn from Indian companies. There is so much going on in the country, such as infrastructure development, that provides many great opportunities for companies worldwide. There are 900,000 people of Indian origin that live in Ontario and we have 75,000 students from India come every year to Ontario because it's a great opportunity to live, explore and expand in the businesses. We have 65,000 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math graduates every year, but there are never enough employees for the thousands of jobs that are available in Ontario and so we see a lot of a lot of people from India coming for the tech jobs. What opportunities are available in Ontario for skilled immigrants? In which industries are you currently witness the most growth? Ontario is the largest in Canada with more than 40 per cent of the population living here. So, the federal government has opened up to allow 500,000 new immigrants annually. From this Ontario will receive proportionally to 40 per cent of that, so we're ready to accept those immigrants. We have several 100,000 jobs open today. Skilled labour, construction, tech and just about every sector is looking for people. We just signed in the last 22 months,CAD 60 billion in the electric vehicle and electric vehicle battery sector. In the northern part of Ontario is the mining area and then a little bit away from the actual mines is the manufacturing of lithium hydroxide, which is necessary to make an electric vehicle battery. We have five vehicle manufacturers in Ontario. People may not know that Ontario is the only province in Canada that makes cars, and we're the second largest auto jurisdiction in all of North America, so it's all EV batteries and anything to do with the new e-mobility. Do you have any kind of training programmes on a government level available? We have hundreds of millions of dollars that, our provincial government, continues to put into skilled development skills. For training we have both a university system and an applied college system, and we're really putting a lot of money into the latter because we need people trained to do specific tasks that are skilled labour. Ontario is such a multicultural and has a very diverse population. Most people already speak more than one language, so it's English language services now and they are a big part of what the settlement services we offer in our immigration programmes. Can you tell me about your collaboration with the government of Telangana? Given the fact that we have very similar business relationships and the way we conduct business and the nature of the industries is very similar, we are here to look at areas including life sciences, advanced manufacturing and technology. Which also happen to be three of India's choice areas of expansion. We signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Telangana in 2016. Recently, we have taken to upgrading this through amendments to include things like electric vehicles and artificial intelligence. Neither of those two were popular in 2016, so those have been added to the MoU to acknowledge the changing ways of the world. Any plans to extend collaboration with on other India states? Yeah, there are several others that we are in the middle of working on, so I won't break any of the confidences. There are so many billions being spent In India on infrastructure that we Ontario companies to come here and do work, whether it's engineering or design work or actual implementation. And certainly companies from India are very welcome to come to Ontario and bid on our work. What kind of initiatives would you like to see from the Indian government that would help further this process along? A couple of things. First of all, just talking about Ontario and India relationships is really important. Having public dialogues and speaking to government themselves about best practices, lessons from the pandemic and areas where collaboration is possible. We saw many Ontario companies invest here in India and several Indian companies decide to open shop in Ontario as well in the tech sector. So, I think just more collaboration and more open dialogue.

122 B W EDUCATION JANUARY 2023 WWW.BWEDUCATION.COM BVR Mohan Reddy, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Roorkee and IIT Hyderabad, Founder Chairperson of Cyient, and author of Engineered in India, shares with BW Education his thoughts on transformation needed in engineering education and his vision for research I t's almost 50 years since I graduated from IIT Kanpur (1974). In the past the source for knowledge was fairly limited. To cite an example, I had an intent of learning about Assembly Line Balancing. I went to look for a specific book in the library but didn’t find it. The librarian told me the book had been issued and it will take two weeks for it to be returned. So, I had the intent to learn, but there was limited access. Whereas now, sitting in the car, travelling from Roorkee to Delhi, there is no dull moment in my life. I learn all the time. Access to knowledge has become extensive. Technology is enabling learning anywhere, anytime. But the pressure on faculty has changed. With transformation in technology and extensive access to knowledge it’s time for youngsters to come in to handle to Millennials and Centennials whose listening span is no more than 12 minutes and there is enough evidence today for that. After 12 minutes a lecture becomes a monologic. There has to be some activity built in. Moving on, Learning will become extremely student-centric. Technology is already enabling us to create individual learning paths.Learning is not going to be one-time; you have to learn all the time.People will look forward to more of micro degrees. Let Youngsters Teach Millennials & Centennials Translating Research Research is being done by academia, but we need translation of that. The reason why translation not being done because industry is not aware of what is being done in institutions. It feels that education institutions are very long-term projects, that they keep doing research and no outcomes are associated with it. There should be trust built between the two. For that, we have started an IIT R&D fair called Inventive on IIT Delhi campus in October. All the IITs participated in it, and we sourced 400 projects, out of which we shortlisted 75 and displayed. A number of inquiries have come. If industry shows interest, the faculty will feel motivated to come up with good and relevant work, instead of publishing in some journal and stopping there. Technology is already enabling us to create individual learning paths. Learning is not going to be one-time; you have to learn all the time. People will look forward to more of micro degrees We are doing many things in the right direction. But I keep saying, what brought us here, will not take us there. LAST WORD
