Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
I would like to congratulate the English Language Department at the Institute of Teacher Education Tun
Hussein Onn Campus (IPGKTHO) for successfully publishing the book Voices of IPGKTHO. It is a collection
of the poems written by the lecturers and students from IPGKTHO as well as from school teachers and other
Institute of Teacher Education (ITE) and university lecturers. This publication marks the success achievement
for one of the important efforts of the Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM) in improving the
competencies of lecturers and producing students who are capable and skilled in critical and creative thinking.
With the writing and production of creative works such as poetry, the lecturers’ and students’ talents can be
unearthed. Therefore, this book helps to produce more creative writers from IPGKTHO.
It is truly a long and tedious process, ranging from giving the necessary input on the types and structures of
poems in a workshop, and then to collecting, compiling, editing, publishing and printing all the poems into a
book entitled "Voices of IPGKTHO". The book is a final product that showcases everyone’s talent and
creativity in writing their own poems.
Well done to all English lecturers at the English Language Department, current students of Teaching English
as a Second Language (TESL) in IPGKTHO. Not to forget the contributions from the school teachers and
lecturers from other ITE and university. Your commitment in producing poems of various genres is highly
appreciated.
Finally, yet importantly, I take the opportunity to congratulate everyone and all who were involved in writing
the poems for successfully publishing them in the book with much originality and creativity. I hope that this
will motivate more people to become lovers of poetry. Thank you.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
Finally, a collection of poems selected by the English Language Department was produced. Starting with a
poetry writing workshop organised by the Department of English Language, which was attended by lecturers,
teacher trainees and teachers, not only from within the country but also from abroad.
From the knowledge of poetry writing shared by Dr Yee Bee Choo, participants were able to produce their
own interesting and original poetry. The art of writing poetry is very unique. One can express feelings through
poetry whether happy or sad.
Very gratifying as many participants gave excellent feedback and contributed their creative writing of poems.
Not only the teacher trainees and lecturers from other department that contributed but also writers from other
countries.
Well done and congratulations especially to the chief editor, Dr Yee Bee Choo, for the effort taken in
publishing the compilation of poems and successfully produced “Voices of IPTHO”.
Hopefully in future, English Language Department will produce more amazing poems and inspire more writers
to contribute that can be shared by everyone from all over the world.

“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” (Robert Frost)
Everyone has a different way in expressing emotions through words. Poetry is a literary work that expresses
the feelings and ideas of the writers through its distinctive style and rhythm. Poetry is not just about rhyming
the words, it’s about how the writers express a lot in limited words and how well they use the literary devices
such as simile, metaphors, imagery, and others.
Poetry provides emotion a voice, making it concrete and more powerful. Different writers have different ways
of expressing their voices. With the title “Voices of IPGKTHO” for this book, we are able to uncover the
talents of IPGKTHO lecturers and students through their creative writing in poems.
This book is a compilation of different types of poems ranging from haiku, cinquain, ABC poem, acrostic
poem, concrete/shape poem, ballad, ode, sonnet, and free verse. It collects the poems written by the lecturers
and students from IPGKTHO, as well as the teachers and educators from the schools, institutes of teacher
education, and universities in the country and even other countries. By contributing their poems for this book,
everyone has unearthed their talents and abilities to produce creative writing.
I hope that the publication of this book will deliver the writers’ voices to the readers out there. Reading the
poems is both refreshing and rewarding to the readers. It speaks directly to the soul, and makes us feel as
though we are breathing the words in and out as a life source. I really hope that the readers could hear the
writers’ voices in their poems.
Finally, and most importantly, I would like to congratulate everyone who has successfully created and
published their poems in this book. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, and we anticipate many more poems
in our future publications.

POETRY WORKSHOP
DATE: 19 SEPTEMBER 2021

INTRODUCTION
One of the important efforts of the Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM) is to improve the lecturers’
competencies and produce students who are capable and skilled in critical and creative thinking. With the
writing and production of creative writing such as poetry, talents from the lecturers and students of the Tun
Hussein Onn Campus Teacher Education Institute (IPGKTHO) can be unearthed. Therefore, the English
Language Department organised the Poetry Workshop to provide comprehensive guidance to writers on ethics,
techniques, formats, styles, and guidelines for writing poetry in English with the intention of producing more
creative writers from IPGKTHO.

OBJECTIVES
1. Unearth new talents of English poets among lecturers and students.
2. Provide exposure on poetry writing techniques in English creative writing to the participants.
3. Expand the use of English among lecturers and students.
4. To produce creative writers from among lecturers, staff and students of IPGKTHO.
5. Produce various types of poetry in English.
6. Publish the book "Voices of IPGKTHO" with a collection of English poems.

THE WORKSHOP

The Poetry Workshop was conducted in a form of online
webinar on 19 September 2021. It was held from 2:30
pm to 3:30 pm through YouTube Live at
https://youtu.be/-FnxWre5Ttk. The workshop was
delivered by Dr. Yee Bee Choo as the speaker while Ms
Nur Zahirah binti Zaman served as the moderator. It was
officiated by Madam Balkkis binti Hj Abdul Aziz, the
head of English Language Department, who gave the
opening speech. The workshop was conducted
successfully with about 300 participants from the
schools, institutes of teacher education and universities
and some of them sent their poems to the organiser for
publication in this book “Voices of IPGKTHO”.
