Türkiye’de halk oyunlarý çoðunlukla halk tarafýndan, niþan törenlerinde, askere uðurlamada, yaylaya çýkýþ ve iniþte, doðumda, dinî ve millî bayramlarda oynanmaktadýr. Folk dances are performed by people at all festive occasions such as weddings, births, and official days. They are also performed at the time of seeing a young man off to the military. Özellikle düðünlere, halk oyunlarýný iyi oynayan kiþiler davet edilir. Çünkü ekibin baþýnda yörenin müziklerini ve oyunlarýný iyi bilen tecrübeli kiþiler bulunur. The folk dances owe the rich variety of the dance figures to these people. They perform some improvized dance figures to show their skills. Thus, the dances are shown and taught to the people dancing or not dancing and especially to the young generation. Türkiye’de halk oyunlarýna mutlaka bir müzik aleti eþlik etmektedir. Bazý yörelerde halk oyunlarýyla birlikte türkü de söylenmektedir. Oyunlar isimlerini, o oyunu çýkaran kiþinin adýndan, oynandýðý yöreden, tabiat olaylarýndan, içerdiði konudan... alýr. Turkish folk dances are performed in the accompaniment of a musical instrument. In some areas women dance singing ‘türkü’ (folk songs). The dance is given the name of the person who created it, the name of a geographical area, a natural phenomenon, the story it narrates. As a result of this variety, the local costumes of folk dances are so festive, colorful and are extensive in variety. Türk halk oyunlarý çeþitlilik ve içerik bakýmýndan dünyada en dikkat çeken folklorik olgulardan birisidir. Þu kadar ki Türk halk oyunlarý derlemeleri hâlâ bitirilememiþtir. Fakat çalýþmalar devam etmektedir. Her köyün kendine has oyunlarý olmasý ve ekonomik þartlar bunu güçleþtirmektedir.
