On 26th September 2000 RailTel was
formally established with a authorized
capital of Rs. 1000 crore, Railway’s
existing telecom assets and exclusive
right of way.
When RailTel started its journey, the mandate for the
company was to modernize railways communication
network, earn revenue from the surplus network
capacity and to play a significant role in the realization
of goals and objectives of the National Telecom Policy
1999. But with time RailTel spread its wings beyond
Indian railways and became a reliable Telecom, IT and
ICT service provider. RailTel, today, is not only one of
the largest neutral telecom Infrastructure providers in
the country but also one of the very few debt, free
profit making telecom PSU. From a handful S&T
engineers of Railways steering the company in 2000,
the company today has a 2000+ workforce covering a
large gamut of expertise. The company has crossed the

points creating a nationwide Public Wi-Fi Ecosystem. Proliferation of broadband across the length and
breadth of the country is an essential ingredient of Digital India.
RaiTel is playing a pivotal role in the PM WANI project. RailTel is already a registered PDOA (Public Data
Office Aggregator) and Mobile APP Service Provider under this project and has developed & deployed PM
WANI solution across its Wi-Fi network at 6100+ Railway Stations. The RailTel Wi-Fi app for PM WANI is
now published on Google play store and is under testing. The App will help people connect across RailTel
public wi-fi network Pan India. The deployment of Mobile App based PM-WANI compliant Public WiFi

Partner in Digital Transformation
RailTel started providing pubic Wi-Fi at
Railway Station Wi-Fi Railway stations across the country
with the vision of turning Railway
stations into a platform of Digital
inclusion. The journey started from City
of Dreams Mumbai (Mumbai Central
station) in 2016 and within 6 years 6097
stations have been provided with Wi-Fi
connecting Kashmir to KanyaKumari.
These stations not only connect cities
but also penetrate deep into the
hinterland of the country touching the
lives of millions of people residing in tier
2-3 cities as well as villages. The plan is
to connect ALL Railway stations (except
halt stations) of India.
Wi-Fi is provided under the brand name
of RailWire and the station Wi-Fi network
is one of the largest integrated Wi-Fi
networks of the world. Along the journey
we roped in a number of partners to
support this initiative. RailTel’s first
partner was Google with whom we
completed work at 417 A1,A,C category
stations across India. The stations
covered in this stage were larger
stations with huge footfalls requiring
individual designs for each stations
keeping their unique architecture in
mind, and took quite a lot of time to
complete. Being one of a kind project, we
had to focus on generating public

was that the learning from the first stage
laid the foundation stone for the rest of
the project and once we learned to

Implementation of e-Office
Indian Railways is one of the
largest organizations in the
country with 12 lakh+ employees,
spread over remote corners of the
country. Like many other govt
department, IR has been
dependent on manual filling
system which not only causes
huge operational cost but also
delays the decision-making
process slowing down the national
transporter. To keep pace with the
changing time, Indian Railways
decided to go paperless and
RailTel was entrusted with the
mammoth digital transformation
task of implementing e-Office. NIC
e-office is a software developed by
NIC and hosted at RailTel’s Tier III

RailTel signed the MoU for the

COMMUNICATION
SYSTEM
SYSTEM RailTel as a trusted Signalling and Telecom arm
of the National Transporter i.e. Indian Railways
has entered into a new activity of installing State-
of-the-Art Integrated Tunnel Communication
System on some crucial sections of Indian
Railways aimed at safety of train operations.
RailTel has obtained a total of 5 tunnel
communication project costing Rs. 350 Crore in
three Railway zones. These projects are Katra-
Dharam-Banihal section of the ongoing crucial
Jammu and Kashmir Rail link of Northern
Railway, Panvel-Karjat, Karjat-Lonawala and
Kasara-Igatpuri section of Central Railway and
Castle Rock-Kulem section (Braganza Ghat) of
South Western Railway. The technology to be
used for such system will be first of its kind in
Indian Railways.
This tunnel communication project will achieve
the continuous coverage over the entire length of
the tunnel, clear audio though out with no
interference, reliable system operation under
harsh tunnel environmental conditions, trunked
radio channels across many bands and ease of
system operation and maintenance.
Railway Signalling
Safety along with efficiency is an important priority for Indian Railways. RailTel has been entrusted with the
project of replacing the old mechanical signaling system with Modern Electronic Interlocking Signaling system at 26
stations of Northern Railway. Work at 6 stations have been completed and work is in progress on remaining station.
This replacement will enhance the safety and operational efficiency.
The new Electronic Interlocking signalling system will enable lowering the signal and changing of tracks by click of
a mouse. Earlier mechanical interlocking system was having standard 1 interlocking which have maximum 50 kmph
speed. Now, with modern electronic interlocking system the maximum speed will increase to 100 kmph. Thus,
modern electronic system is not only enhancing the safety and efficiency of train traffic but also increasing the
speed.
Content on Demand
RailTel will soon start rolling out Content on Demand (COD) service in premium/mail/express/
suburban trains pan-India by preloading multilingual content on media servers installed in
trains With COD, passengers will be able to enjoy free or subscription based high quality
streaming service on their personal devices during their train journey. CoD will also be available
at stations with RailWire Wi-Fi.
This service will not only improve the train journey experience for passengers but will also open
up door for non-fare revenue earning. We are in process of finalizing a partner for this project.
Railway Display Network
RailTel is implementing an important project for Indian Railways for the convenience of
passengers by installing large format display screens at foot-over bridges, platforms, waiting
rooms and concourse at railway stations under the Railway Display Network (RDN) project. It
will not only provide the necessary information and social messages but also become a
medium of enriched infotainment. This will help in generating non-fare revenue through
advertisement by utilising footfalls at Railway stations.
MODERNIZING TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM THROUGH
KAVACH (TRAIN COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM)
RailTel also intends to play a significant role in modernizing Train Control System of Indian Railways through
execution of KAVACH (Train Collision Avoidance System-TCAS) which is an indigenously developed
Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System meant to provide protection to trains against Signal Passing at
Danger (SPAD), excessive speed and collisions caused due to human errors or limitations and equipment
failures. In the present Union Budget FY-2022-23, the project of KAVACH has been sanctioned for 2000
KM on Indian Railway Network.
RailTel will also implement Long Term Evolution (LTE) based High Speed Mobile Communication Corridor for
Indian Railways which is the latest wireless Communication standard worldwide to facilitate Modern Railway
Signalling and data centric applications.
Edge Data Centre
RailTel's Edge Data Centre at Secunderabad
With a view to accelerate the pace of digital transformation and efficient digital delivery in rural and semi-urban areas,
RailTel has decided to create several “Edge Data Centres” in such areas in different parts of the country jointly with partners
from industry under PPP model.
Edge data centres are small data centres located at the edge of the network, where they are closer to end users and
devices. Having such kind of facility at the edge would enable faster performance and lower latency as organizations will not
have to move the data to far-flung data centres to process it which is now a requirement in view of wide range of next-
generation applications like big data, the Internet of Things, Cloud and streaming services, and other technology trends.
Such Edge Data Centres are proposed to be set up in the Railway premises/land initially across 102 locations especially Tier-2
and Tier-3 towns.
