For the past 9 years from 2011, the concerted efforts through the National Greening Program resulted to the
rehabilitation of 41% of Caraga Region’s 340,650-hectare unproductive, denuded and degraded forestlands. Forest
cover was increased from 684,156 hectares to 825,284 hectares in the 5 provinces here in northeast region of
Mindanao.

The rehabilitation of forestlands was not only for the mitigation of the ill effects of the climate-change
phenomena but also for the provision of environmental and forest goods and services to the local economy such as
timber, food, rubber and other non-timber products. This is also true for amplified environmental services such as
water availability for domestic and industrial uses, and protective functions of coastal/mangrove areas resulting to
among others, increased fish catch of coastal communities.

To further sustain the rehabilitation efforts and conservation of watershed areas, the resource support for the
maintenance and protection activities by NGP partner-implementers (communities and LGUs) for the established
protection forests was beefed-up.

One of the expected outcomes of the Program is the involvement of the key and critical stakeholders in the
sustainable management of developed plantations and protection of existing forests. Their engagement included
instilling to them sense of accountability on our natural resources and environment. Commitment-setting covenants,
resource-sharing schemes, technology-transfer interphasing, among others were instituted among said stakeholders.

A facet of NGP implementation is the improvement of social and human capital of the local communities
engaged in the Program. This is an on-going endeavor to contribute to the development and enhancement of their
socio-economic well-being. Capability-building activities, actual exposure to best farm practices and value-adding
processes, and institutional linkaging as exhibited in commodity value chain analysis, were embarked upon to put the
communities in economic or even competitive advantage.

The DENR Regional Office ensures that implementation of the Program is marshalled towards attainment of its
intended outputs and outcomes. Management arrangements are put in place in monitoring the implementation
progress including highlighting its success stories as presented in this Coffee Table Book.

“ “I have a different approach

in handling my NGP plantation.
I decided to intercrop my

cacao plantation with banana and
coconut. This is to ensure that I will have
an income every week, month, and year.

I am truly grateful towards the
DENR and the Government for

implementing the

National Greening
Program.

It indeed changed my life.
