The National Greening Program: Stories of Success
“Caraga Greener Forest, Richer Natural Resources”
After 9 years of implementation, NGP was able to develop 141,128 hectares of unproductive, denuded and
degraded forestlands in Caraga Region. These rehabilitated forestlands were planted with commercial timber species,
agroforestry tree and fruit crops, rubber and bamboo among others, in production forest areas. Forest areas such as
watersheds and protected landscapes and coastal/beach areas are planted with indigenous forest species and mangrove
species.
For 2019, NGP implementation in Caraga Region was focused on the maintenance and protection activities of the
2-year and 3-year old forest plantations, agroforestry farms and mangrove plantings. To ensure the quality of
development of the young plantation, project fund allocation for maintenance and protection activities was increased
significantly.
NGP still relies to the partner-implementers who were engaged in the development, maintenance and protection of
NGP project areas. These were the forest-tenure holders (CBFMA, SIFMA, CADT, etc.) and community or peoples’
organizations or Barangay LGUs.
We have new partners that we engaged in the forest rehabilitation work for this year 2019. DPWH Caraga Region
committed to develop 95 hectares of Taguibo Watershed in Butuan City. The DSWD under its Sustainable Livelihood
Program, provided assistance to our partner POs through technical support and resource augmentation for value-adding
schemes for their harvestable tree plantations and agroforestry produce.
5 mining companies operating in Caraga were also enjoined to participate in Adopt-NGP-Site Program of the NGP.
NGP implementation also generated 29,014 jobs out of its activities in seedling production, area development,
plantation maintenance and protection, and project technical support and monitoring. Such job generation has significant
impact in the economy of local communities.
For the furtherance of social marketing, advocacy and participation in the development efforts, IEC is a sustained
activity in all fronts of NGP implementation. The celebration of International Day of Forests and Arbor Cay was heralded
throughout the Region with the involvement of critical stakeholders in government greening program.
Attainment of Program objectives and outcomes is underpinned by critical implementation support mechanisms.
Establishment and maintenance of Seed Production Areas and Clonal Nurseries, operationalization of Mechanized and
Modern Forest Nursery, engagement and capacity-building of extension officers, DENR Officials on NGP Project Monitoring,
and implementation of Third-Party Monitoring, are support mechanisms to ensure the efficacy of the NGP Regional
Program Management.
