Welcome to Bembridge and St Helens
and the 2016 edition of our Guide
Welcome to you all – My name is Gail Wade, most of you know me as running the
barbers in the village of Bembridge. Another year ahead of us, I don't know about
anyone else but last year went really quickly so don't take too long deciding what you want to do!
There are so many choices in Bembridge and St Helens, you can do as much or as little as you like.
Wonderful walks along our beaches or just sitting and having a picnic whilst watching everyone
else rushing around on the water, then come up to our villages and see what we have to share with
you. We have lots of great food options around for making your own amazing dishes, or just put
your feet up and let everyone else do the work for you at our beach cafés, restaurants, bistros or
the friendly pubs, we are a Gourmet Experience.
Check out some of the dates for your diary, we have amazing stuff to offer you – our Street Fair,
Summer Festival, Dance on the Duver, Sports & Carnival, a Food Festival and more, there is always
something going on here.
Since last season there have been some defibrillators installed around both villages, they are
marked on our map in the centre of this Guide. A big 'thank you' to all the people who helped to get
the defibrillators set up in place and running, there were multiple clubs, centres and associations
involved all done at different times with different people involved so again a big thank you. People
pull together here and we look after each other.
So come and relax and enjoy yourself. Gail Wade,

Christmas distributing sweets to the kids.
A popular local event, everyone is always welcome...

St Helens
A note from John Earnshaw
– Chair of St Helens Parish Council
“We are the village green preservation society....”
so sang Dave Davies and Kate Risby some years ago,
“Preserving the old ways, from being abused.
Protecting the new ways, for me and for you.”
In St Helens the yearly round of events helps to sustain that apparent timelessness of the English
village, with its quintessential scenes of long summer days, relaxing outside the local pub and
watching a game of cricket on the village green.
However, behind the scenes, the old ways are very much at risk due to changes that have occurred
a long way off, out in the wide world, where it’s all blue and dim.
Like towns and villages all across the country, central government cuts are forcing changes in the
way services are provided. St Helens’ parish council has taken on the responsibility of keeping the
village greens neat and trimmed, a service which was due to be reduced drastically. The open
spaces can still now be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The public toilets on the green, which
were due to be closed, are now kept open and paid for by the council through the village precept.
It was felt it was important that these facilities should be available as we have regular visitors to
the village throughout the year, not only as general tourists travelling around the island, but also
for the village events and the car boot each Sunday during the summer.

Last year, for the second time in succession,
St Helens was awarded the accolade of best
kept village on the Isle of Wight, along with a
further award as best kept large village. It is
probably fair to say that this could have been
prejudiced if the parish council had not taken
the decision to maintain both services.
St Helens is a beautiful place to live, and to
visit, but does not exist in isolation. We are
proud to be associated with Bembridge and the
harbour area, and keen to share in the process
of maintaining and developing the area as both
a vibrant tourist destination and a mutually
supportive community.
Our Parish Councillors all live in the village and are delighted to talk to any resident or visitor to the
area – they come from various professions and take part in a variety of recreational activities all as-
sisting in their ability to act as Parish Councillors for the village of St Helens.

Thinking of selling your home? A little advice from Philip Weeks, partner
at Hose Rhodes Dickson in Bembridge
Whether your home is a studio apartment in
the village, one of our glorious houseboats
on the harbour, a caravan, bungalow, semi
or detached house – each is your home and
selling it is much the same!
The value of your property
A key consideration when selling your
home is its' value. Therefore its vital that an
Estate Agent can provide a detailed market
appraisal so that you can plan your sale
knowing you have a clear picture of your
finances. An established local agent will know
the hidden nooks and crannies to visit and
why the area is so inherently charming as a
great destination to invest in property.
Marketing your property
How will your home be marketed?
Well-presented particulars, colour brochures
with professional quality photography and
floor plans will maximise impact.
Advertising, coverage in local publications,
such as the property pages of the IWCP,
exposure on the number one UK property
portal Rightmove, On The Market.com and on
an agency’s own website, reach buyers both
locally and further afield.
Extensive direct mail and email campaigns
should be launched.
Ongoing matters to consider
An agreement with an Agency – in today’s
market there shouldn’t be any lengthy
agreements.
When will your home be viewed by potential
buyers?
Will the prospective buyer be accompanied
by an agency representative?
It is of course necessary for you to be kept in
regular contact with market analysis for your
property and to get honest feedback.
Once a buyer is found
Your agency will be able to assist you with
necessary legal requirements, conveyancers,
dealing with surveyors and your ongoing
move from your home.

The latest from our local Auction Rooms
Hose Rhodes Dickson’s auction rooms are
based in Quay Lane, Brading (occupying part
of the former waxworks premises), and offer a
comprehensive auction and valuation service,
encompassing both modern and vintage, and
fine art and antique sales.
The popular monthly modern and vintage sales
take place on a Saturday, ensuring maximum
attendance. Amongst the myriad lots you
can expect to find anything from furniture to
televisions, jewellery, the occasional car or boat
and even telephones are collectable...
The more specialist fine art and antique auctions
are held every quarter. These are internationally
advertised via the-saleroom.com and have the
advantage of live internet bidding. The fully illustrated
catalogues are divided into specialist sections, and
detailed condition reports and photographs can be
provided for all lots.
The fine art auctions include jewellery of all
descriptions, although it is often the diamond rings,
necklaces and bracelets that command the most
attention. A more recent surge in demand has
come from the Chinese who are very interested
in ivory, jade and coral, but most of all amber.
Georgian silver pieces are still avidly collected,
as are novelty items of all descriptions. We
recently sold a ‘kangaroo’ pin cushion, which
will probably end up in Australia.
The market for ceramics and glassware is
still strong, where collectors are as keen on
20th Century designer pieces as they are on
18th Century Worcester porcelain. Ceramics
designed by advocates of the Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic movements of the early 20th Century
have seen burgeoning interest. Demand for clocks and watches is always present but gentlemen’s
Rolex watches are very popular, with top quality gold timepieces much in fashion.
With the centenary of the various events in the First World War, interest in medals, weapons,
ephemera and other militaria is increasing. Medals are particularly sought after that commend
bravery above and beyond the call of duty. Second World War weapons from all participants also
have a strong following.

Whilst on the subject of trends in the auction trade, mention must be made of the difference that
the entry of the Chinese buyers has made to the bidding at auctions. Demand from the Orient has
seen a dramatic rise in prices for oriental porcelain, ivory, silver and textiles. Although the Chinese
economy has slowed a little, we can be assured that this interest in their heritage will continue.
Hose Rhodes Dickson Auction Rooms are also able to offer a probate valuation service, assisting
solicitors and executors with the valuation of home contents and personal effects. In addition,
when required, we also have the capability to undertake full house clearance.
As well as the regular valuation mornings held at the Brading saleroom,
Rex Gully and Rebecca Ball frequently hold ‘Antiques Roadshow’ style
valuations at venues across the Island, including Hose Rhodes Dickson
offices. If you are unable to attend a valuation morning, we are always
happy to visit you at home.

Artist Charlotte Hodge Thomas considers
the local art scene ...
Growing-up in Bembridge and having spent my childhood playing on its
many beaches, the harbour and surrounding countryside, Bembridge,
and everything about it, was well and truly embedded in my psyche by
the time I left the Island to study art in the late 1980s’.
When I moved back into Bembridge in 2002, after several years working as a textile artist in
Manchester and London, I found these familiar, inviting surroundings prompted me to pick up a
paintbrush again. Beginning my renewed journey in paint, I became aware of the vitality of artistic
activity within the village and its surrounding areas...
Bembridge has a long pedigree in attracting artists and artistic
practice: Turner made a watercolour sketch of Bembridge
Windmill in 1795.
For many of his 103 years the late Cavendish Morton drew
inspiration from his Bembridge surroundings, becoming known
for his vibrant paintings of racing yachts in the Harbour and
Solent.

It is no coincidence that these masters of colour and light should be attracted to our Eastern Isle.
Indeed, many creative types are drawn to this inspiring setting, as proven by the current artistic

In the annual Isle of Wight Open Studios event, held in late July, one of the largest concentrations
of exhibiting artists come from Bembridge and St Helens. There are also seasonal exhibitions held
by Bembridge Art Society in Bembridge Village Hall, a Summer Exhibition at Bembridge Sailing
Club and numerous other independent exhibitions and art classes going on in the area.
One of the most exciting displays of arts and crafts, held every August in Bembridge Village Hall,
is the week long ‘Beaux Arts’ exhibition. Masterminded by artist Holly Maslen, Beaux Arts is the
name given to an eclectic mix of around 15-20 Island artists and makers. This group exhibition
has been showcased annually for over a decade now and has continually grown in terms of the
professionalism and quality of exhibits. The opening night (this year Saturday 20 August 2016) is
always buzzing – a gathering of like- minded locals and visitors, who enjoy the rich diversity of
artistic talent on display. This year, Beaux Arts is being extended to incorporate part of the Bank
Holiday weekend (Saturday 20 – Saturday 27 August), so hopefully attracting a wider audience to
enjoy all the creativity on show.

Although less developed, this Eastern corner of the I.O.W. does share similarities with the bustling
artistic hub of St Ives in Cornwall; certainly in terms of its quality of light, inspirational setting and
an ever-expanding artistic community.
A vibrant art community is enriching for all and needs to be nurtured. With the continuing support
of local and visiting art enthusiasts - frequenting the many exhibitions and artistic events on offer,
purchasing the wide variety of one-off artworks- this local community will continue to flourish.
Who knows, maybe one day putting East Wight as firmly on the map for inspiring British Art as our
Cornish counterpart?

Windmill
Art
Challenge
Charlotte
Hodge Thomas
In June 2011 I took part in the ‘Windmill Art Challenge’; an event organised to celebrate
the 300 year history of Bembridge Windmill and 50 years with the National Trust. Members
of the public were invited to spend a maximum of four hours (12.30 – 4.30pm) creating
a piece of artwork depicting the Windmill. No preliminary sketches or markings out on
canvas were allowed.
I took the challenge on June 14th, thankfully a gloriously sunny day. The experience was
intense and totally absorbing: I loved the discipline of having to produce a complete
painting in such a short space of time. I’d chosen quite a big canvas to work on so I had to
keep a fast pace. The experience reminded me how fresh and spontaneous painting can
be when pushed for time and how much can be achieved when fully immersed in the
moment.
The experience inspired me to repeat the challenge for myself the following October. This
time, without the background pressure of a time limit, I couldn’t quite manage to complete
‘Bembridge Windmill II’ in just four hours... more like two consecutive afternoons... but it
was still created entirely on site (without preliminary sketches or photographs), on a blank
canvas and in the open air!

TIDAL INFORMATION
Some explanation is needed regarding the presentation of high water times in this guide, as it differs from that
shown in our previous guides, and from what may be shown on other sources of tide information. This year we
are showing two times for each high water period (“HW”).
The tide information in the guide is derived from data supplied by the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), the
Government agency responsible for producing nautical publications and services for the Royal Navy and
merchant shipping.
In September 2015, the predictions for Portsmouth caused significant confusion over the progression of the
time of HW, specifically over the 10th – 12th September 2015, (when the midday high tide time on the 11th
was shown as being only one minute later than the previous day). The data for Bembridge Approaches was
even more peculiar - the midday high tide time on the 11th was shown as being one minute earlier than the
previous day! These oddities were due to the progression in time of HW being affected by the HW stand (i.e.
the prolonged period of little or no change in the tidal rise or fall over the HW portion of the tide curve). So the
seemingly odd progression in time of HW was due to where the peak of the tide was identified within the HW
stand on each of those days.
In the data in their digital predictions software ‘TotalTide’ and their on-line prediction site ‘EasyTide’ the UKHO
have now decided that for Portsmouth, on most days, rather than show a single time for HW, they will show the
start and end of the period of the HW stand.
Because tidal predictions for Bembridge Harbour (along with some other ports in the area) are based on
predictions from Portsmouth adjusted by a series of time and height offsets, then it follows that tide predictions
for Bembridge now also show the beginning and end points of the prolonged HW stand.
When planning this edition of the Bembridge & St Helens Guide we considered how best to show HW times.
Essentially we had two choices. We could, as in the past, identify the exact point of HW, and just show that
time. This has the advantage of being easy to understand, but the point identified as HW could be misleading.
Sometimes the identified point of HW might be toward the beginning of the HW stand, and sometimes towards
the end. If the identified time of HW is towards the end of the HW stand then it may appear the tide “has come
in earlier than expected”, this could be a particular problem if you were walking along the beach expecting HW
to occur in say an hours time, but in fact most of the rise in sea water has already occurred, you might get a little
wetter than expected, or in a worst case scenario be cut off by the tide and have to call the emergency services.
The second way of presenting the data would be to follow the UKHO, and to show the start and end of the
period of HW stand. At first this may seem confusing (hence this lengthy introduction to the tide tables),
since we are not showing one particular time of HW, but are indicating two times between which it can be
considered that the tide is “high”. We believe however that this is the more useful way of presenting HW.
