A A COOMBES
Alan Alford Coombes (1920 - 2016)
Sadly Alan slipped peacefully out on the ebb tide this afternoon.
More than a husband, father and my grandfather; he was an
inspiration, a role model, loved and respected by everyone who
ever met him and just damn good fun to be around! I can never
quantify the ways his influence has made me who I am but I'm
eternally grateful. Missed you will be but you have left this bit of
the world a better place for having you in it.
9th February 2016
Simon Coombes (Grandson)
Alan Coombes was apprenticed at Woodnutt's Boatyard, St Helens, from 1936
before being called up into the Royal Navy between 1941 – 1946. Following his
de-mobbing he then worked for Keith Nelson's until 1950/1 when he started
his own boatbuilding firm in a rented British Railways shed next to where GP
Motorworks is now with an order for 'One Dinghy'!
During the 1950's he built many dinghies
and the famous Coombes 'Bembridge
Wooden Scows' which sold for around
£85 complete in 1951! He also built a
motor launch or two, some punts and of
course maintained and repaired boats for
both BSC and the then fledgling BHYC. In
1955 Alan designed the Swan dinghy as a
comfortable day boat which could also be
raced – 20 were built over a period up to
1971 along with over 100 Scows.
Peter Scott joined the firm in 1956 and the
partnership moved to sheds, now long
gone, which were part of Ernie Wade's Yard.
These were bigger and taller enabling them
to start building crusers such as 'L Class',
'Normandy' and some Motor Cruisers.
During 1960's over a winter period they
usualy built a cruiser, 2 Swans and 5 Scows
in addition to other work.
Around this time they took on a number
of apprentices: Lionel Roach, Nick & Eddie
Wade, Michael "Bunny" Warren plus several
other staff as the firm grew.
The next expansion was when a few
chandlery items were stocked and in 1967
54
Alan’s son Martin wanted something to do in
the Summer Holidays and was “put in charge”
of the tiny shop which had about 20-30 items.
A “busy” day in August might bring two or
three customers per day! This side of things
was gradually expanded and when “Timmy”
Atrill retired from his shop on “Point Hill” (Kings
Road) more items were stocked.
In the early 1970’s the yard expanded onto
a second site, the ground which makes up
A A Coombes yard today, and in 1971 the
shop moved along the road to what is now Bill
Mitchell’s office and showroom. As the new
site's infrastructure grew the business moved
solely to this site. The switch to glass fibre boats
and “trendy” dinghies had already begun so
the yard was busy with repairs and refits, plus
mending holes in Mirror Dinghies and a new
batch of youngsters were taken on through the
YTS (Youth Training Services) Scheme.
By 1985 prospects of retirement for Alan and
Peter made it necessary to find a new owner
for the yard whilst the shop would be retained
in the family. Bill Mitchell took over at the end
of October 1985, whilst a new site was sought
for the shop which had now become Spinnaker
Chandlery. The business founded by Alan back
in 1951 celebrates it’s 65th Anniversary this year.

finished just before Easter 1986 and during worked at the shop during the school holidays,
April all stock was moved to the new site. Peter joined full time in July 2001 and second son,
and Martin plus a couple of students ran the Ben, part time, three years later. Over the
shop for a couple of years until Peter retired years the shop has diversified into stocking
in December 1988. Martin and his aunt, plus non-yachting items (gear for land lubbers)
students, ran the shop for three months until notably outdoor clothing but more recently

Will Squibb started at A A Coombes as a 'Saturday job' in the
1960's becoming a full time employee in 1978. Will started his
own business over on the Duver at St Helens in 1996, initially from
the small first floor premises at Woodnutts. The business gradually
grew and Will Squibb Boatbuilders took over the entire Woodnutts
Yard undertaking projects on both classic and modern boats. Four
years ago, having outgrown Woodnutts, the business moved to
Attrills Yard – both Will's sons and his daughter are involved along
with an ever growing team of boatbuilders, marine engineers, etc.
This years project is complete refit of a 46 Hyles, 'Hero', including
new teak deck, complete re-spray outside 'and in' and installation
of new electronics and other fittings. This in addition to annual
maintenance of BOD's, Redwings, Mermaids etc. has been a busy
year for the yard.
Simon Cooper apprentice under Alan Coombes from the age of
16 is back in the boat building business at Will Squibb Boatbuilders
– he also carries out property building work, joinery, carpentry etc.

Lady Sarah Pigot OBE ~ Sally... A painting of Bembridge Point by
Sally's Great Grandfather c.1880
Sally Pigot’s first introduction to
Bembridge came with playing on
Ducie Beach in 1939 at the age of 5.
Although not Islanders themselves,
her family had been coming to
Cowes since the mid 1800’s.
This introduction to Bembridge was to be the
start of a connection with the Village which has
lasted over 75 years. She spent many happy
holidays visiting her parents’home at Darts Lane
during the years following the Second World
War and has fond memories of dinghy sailing at
the Bembridge Sailing Club, swimming at Ducie
Beach, visiting the then Garland Club and fun
fairs in Bembridge and St. Helens.

Shortly after her marriage in 1968 to Major General Sir Robert (Tony) Pigot, she and her husband
moved to the village from London to bring up their children, Robert and Sophie, and lived in Love
Lane. Over the coming years both she and Tony became involved in a number of local organisations
and spent leisure times on their boat 'Cheetah'.

She also became the first Chairman of what was to become the
hugely successful Isle of Wight Gift Fair, now held annually before
Christmas at the Bembridge Sailing Club. Her family connections
with the Bembridge Sailing Club stretch back over 100 years and
she has been its Vice Commodore as well as serving as a race
officer for many years.
On a more Island wide level she was appointed County President
of St. John Ambulance, for which she was the awarded the Order
of St. John, and was also a member, and then twice Chairman,
of the Independent Monitoring Board at Camp Hill Prison. In
more recent years she has been Chairman of the Island Friends
of Royal Osborne (now Friends of Osborne).
In 2005, Sally was elected as ward member for Bembridge North
on the Isle of Wight Council and this led to her becoming Vice
Chairman of the Council in 2008. From her time as a County
Councillor, and to this day, she still serves Bembridge as a Parish Councillor with a strong interest in
planning, the Harbour, and the development of the Village for its youth. To this end she is a Trustee
of the Bembridge Youth and Community Centre.
Following a lifetime of service to the Bembridge and Island community, 2015 saw Sally being
appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and in November she attended an
Investiture held by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
Sally has always loved Bembridge, is proud to have been able to put
something back into a community which she enjoys so much, and
couldn’t think of living anywhere else.

Fundraising for our Lifeboats in Bembridge
by Ken Orchard – Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Guild Press Officer
The Bembridge Lifeboat Guild is a very busy organisation of well over 100 members, who support
the lifeboats through fundraising, education and raising public awareness of the work of the RNLI.
In addition to running the Lifeboat gift and souvenir shop at Lane End, the Guild also provides
supervision and guidance for visitors at the offshore boathouse and talks for the many school and
youth group visits throughout the year. During 2015, no fewer than 36,000 people visited the
station including over 1,500 young people on educational visits. Regular fundraising efforts are
also carried out by the Guild, such as coffee mornings, flag days, raffles and a presence at events
like the Bembridge Street Fair and the Lifeboat station’s annual “Open Day”.
This year, the Guild will be actively promoting
the RNLI’s national “Respect the Water”
campaign – an initiative aimed at reducing
the number of water-related fatalities, through
education and advice to all users of the marine
environment – from sailors and bathers to
beach dog walkers. This will be highlighted at
this year’s “May Day“ week, with a programme
of events, both fun and instructional, taking
place at the Lifeboat Station.
If you would like to become involved with
supporting our lifeboats, the Guild meet on
the first Monday of each month at Bembridge
Methodist Church Hall at 2.30pm.

Bembridge & St Helens Guide
Compared to other similar publications our, advertising costs in this Guide are over 50% cheaper!
This is all thanks to the BBA Committee many of whom give a lot of time to the production, supplying
photographs, content, editorial, etc., still enabling the Guide to make a reasonable profit, being able to
be put back into the BBA's promotion of our area, through support and sponsorship of various village
events in both St Helens and Bembridge. We thank our advertisers in 2016 for their continued support.
To advertise in the 2017 Guide or to join the Association –
contact any committee member, email, phone or go to our website.
