50 years of

One of the BBA’s founder members hits the milestone of 50 years in business in our 20th year. . .
Bembridge Marine, the ‘Robinson’s’ family business started by Arthur in 1967 is still operated by the family,
now under the leadership of Arthur’s sons, Jim and Tom.

Arthur Robinson:

Arthur has always had a passion for boats and planes, making models
from a young age. At 16 he took an apprenticeship with GE Wade
marine engineering, Bembridge Harbour as a fabricator fitter, and later
the service and repairing of inboard marine engines.
In the 1960s the ‘outboard
motor’ became popular and with
the latest designs of plywood
speedboats the combination
could achieve 30 mph! Arthur
was offered the job of specialising
in these engines. At the same
time the RNLI opened a new inshore station in Bembridge, using an
inflatable boat with a single outboard motor. Arthur was offered a place
on the first crew, which gave him some valuable experience.
Arthur was also involed with powerboat racing in its heyday with
Souters in Cowes and fitted out such boats as the Gardener brothers
Levi design “Surfury”. Arthur saw his employers losing interest in smaller craft and outbaords and in 1967,
at 25 years old and just married, he decided it was time to take a risk and open his own engineering shop
specializing in outboard motors – Bembridge Marine Ltd trading as“Bembridge Outboards”.

6

Early Years of Bembridge Marine – Bembridge Outboards

In early years Bembridge Outboards held the Fletcher
boat and Johnson outboard dealerships and the
combination was popular with leisure users.

In 1974 a waterside premises “Chamans Boatyard”
came up for sale; it had a slipway, storage and larger
buildings than Bembridge Marine’s location on the hill
in Bembridge. Bembridge Outboards was now well
established and the move was necessary to grow the
business.

The business gained the Shetland boat dealership and later Dell Quay dory dealership which was more family
friendly. The engines were improving in design and power. Arthur had always wanted the Mercury outboards
dealership and, with the new larger premises, it was finally offered. We still remain the same dealer today.
Mercury was the powerboat race team choice and Bembridge Outboards was involved in several race projects.

One of the more notable race boats was the first ever RIB called “Rocking
Pneumonia”. It was owned by John Caulcutt and had been designed by
Atlantic College in Wales. Arthur became friendly with a designer called
George Marvin. He embraced the rigid bottom inflatable and went on to
design the original Avon Searider RIBs – these were initially conveniently
produced by Galt Glass a GRP production company in Cowes and
Bembridge Outboards started to sell some of the Seariders as rescue boats
to local sailing clubs. Club members liked the safety and comfort and started to want the RIBs for leisure. One
customer commissioned a 5.4 meter Searider with a new Mercury 6 cylinder 115hp to set the record to ski from
IOW to Le Havre. The boat was just controllable and the mono ski record was set. During the 1980s Arthur and
Bembridge Outboards were involved in many powerboat races, including the race to Monaco (unfortunately
“Rocking Pneumonia”, now fitted with long-range tanks and twin 60hp Mercury outboards only made northern
Spain). Later Carlsberg, with a multi-million pound budget, was big in powerboating and Heineken wanting to
woo spectators took part in the “Round Britain in 1984”, sponsoring a new boat which just squeezed into the
minimum length to race. Bembridge Outboards set up the boat, named “Thirst Aid”, with twin hand start 50hp
Mercury outboards and the crew followed the boat round the country, handing out free beer and balloons!
“Thirst Aid“ made it round intact but the Carlsberg boat sunk in the Irish Sea.

Bembridge Outboards custom grew and with it the need for more choice,
this together with a few discerning customers wanting larger boats led
the company to go direct to the US importing Boston Whalers, Donzi
and Wahoo boats, some of which are still with the original owners in
Bembridge.

In 1987 the company took part in a project to restore Donald Cambell’s
tender to “Bluebird”, overhauling the engine and drive gear.

7

Jim and Tom Robinson

James Robinson, never to be called Jim! was born in 1969 and by the
80’s was‘hanging around’Bembridge Outboards yard during his school
holidays. In 1986 started a 3-year apprenticeship with the RNLI at the
Inshore Centre at East Cowes, undertaking training in the maintenance
and repair of the RNLI’s fleet of rigid inflatable boats. He also took part
in boat handling and lifesaving courses.
In 1989 Jim left the RNLI and moved to Greece, working for a number of
British owned companies providing marine engineering, maintenance
and stainless fabrication in Govia marina. He also maintained a fleet
of boats for a number of clients linked to summer homes on the north
west coast.
In 1999 Jim returned to join his father Arthur at Bembridge Marine.
The premises were in need of modernisation to keep up with growth.
The company planned and undertook a long term rebuild program,
replacing buildings, upgrading the entire site and introducing one of
the first rack and stack systems on the south coast.
Business and the economy were booming. The racks filled. The company
sold large volumes of boats, in one season selling a high proportion of
Ribcraft UK’s orders. Jeanneau was another important brand for the
company selling over 30 boats in three years. Arthur retired in 2003
and Jim took the helm.
Tom Robinson was born in 1980 and similarly followed his father and
brother with a love of boats and engines. He joined the crew of super
yacht “Philanti” owned by Thomas Sopwith in 2000, staying for two
years before joining the team at Ocean Marine (part of the Ferretti
group) shore based servicing the super yacht industry in Palma. Tom
Robinson returned to join the expanding Bembridge Marine in 2003.

8

Shearwater RIBs – Bembridge Marine’s‘own brand RIBs’

2004 – RIBs sold in the biggest numbers, but all brands
were offering the same simple finish and harsh seating.
Jeanneau boats however had great ideas, features
and finishes. Jim and Tom decided to put together an
experimental cabin RIB trying to take the best ideas
from both brands. Using a Mike Ring 7.50m hull the
first Shearwater was built. It worked extremely well –
causing a lot of interest and orders but was a little tight
on space, so later the length was increased to 8.6m.
The Shearwater 860 sold in large numbers and in 2008 was nominated for Motor Boat of the Year awards.
Shearwater pushed on with new models even through more testing times – now building their own hulls.
Firstly the big 10 metre Venture cabin RIB, with an inboard diesel engine being used as a charter RIB by
Bembridge Powerboat Training.
Then they were chosen by Wally Yachts to design and produce a tender for its new Ace model. The spec was for
the tender to fit in the onboard garage of theWally Ace
– a maximum height of 1.3 metres with a single point
lift and weigh as near to 1000 kg as possible to include
a diesel engine suitable to achieve 30‘plus’knots, carry
up to seven people and pull a large adult skiier - the
‘ViS’was born!

The Cutter, a 6.8m outboard RIB with a deep V hull handles almost any sea state and has been proven by one of
the purchasers on a circumnavigation of Britain.
More recently the‘890’s with a choice of either inboard or outboard, these are high performance cabin RIBs

50 years of

The Present and Future

The first 50 years of Bembridge Marine has seen the company grow into a well established business operating
from their own premises on the waters edge of Bembridge Harbour.

The company holds the Barrus/Mercury dealership on
the Isle ofWight, supplying and fitting both outboards
and inboards to a variety of boats, but particularly
hi-performance RIBs.

Engines have increased in power and performance
whilst reducing in size, and John Calcutt’s 2 x 60hp
outboards on a race boat are in the dim and distant
past with some leisure boats and RIBs now having
two if not three 300hp engines on the back!

The core of our business remains as marine engineers,
providing servicing and maintenance as well as sales of
both Outboard and Inboard and maintain many local
sailing club and training centre fleets. The company
has a young dynamic team who are well equipped
to deal with the most up to date engineering on the
market today.

We also build our own range of RIBs - operate our
drystack and own a fleet of hire RIB.

from Arthur Robinson:
In the 50th year of Bembridge Marine Ltd it is particularly pleasing to see Jim and Tom and the young enthusiastic team
taking the company forward in the same fashion I envisaged 50 years ago!
Throughout we have listened to what the customer wants and tried to fulfill their wishes and at times led the market,
including the introduction of RIBs to the leisure market, centre consul boats and other design and technology – building
our own range of RIBs and customising designs and our indoor and outdoor dry stack facilities in Bembridge Harbour.
When I started out an elderly customer said:
“Remember nothing in life is constant except change” – how true that has been.

Bareboat Rib Hire

Over the last few years it has become cost effective for the occasional visitors to hire a boat rather than own and
Bembridge Marine own a fleet of hire RIBs which are available for day, week or monthly charter – these may
be taken from Bembridge, Seaview or Cowes and by arrangement from other Solent ports. Prices range from
£150 per day. There is a requirement of a minimum qualification of RYA Powerboat Level 2 and knowledge of
the local area.

Bembridge Harbour's nominated charity for 2017 is
The Sophie Rolf Trust – KissyPuppy

Sophie Rolf lost her courageous battle with cancer in 2013 when she
was just 6 years old. Sophie wanted to help other children and was
instrumental in raising money for a designated area within the Island's
Earl Mountbatten Hospice for children with life shortening conditions
and their families.
Sophie's family are continuing what she started and their charity has
joined forces with the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, local NHS and the
Community Nursing Team to help support, develop and improve
existing provision on the Island for children and their families.
We will be fundraising for them at
all our events and hope you will
be able to support our efforts.

Walking our Coastline

The Isle of Wight Coastal path follows pretty lanes and paths just off the beach through our area from The Priory to
Bembridge Down before descending to Sandown Bay.

Alternatively there is an opportunity to walk around the beach from Priory Bay to the Duver at St Helens (around
Bembridge Harbour via paths and Embankment Road) joining the beach again at Bembridge Point and on
to Whitecliff Bay. For appreciation of the walk and for the opportunity to explore the many rock pools and the
shoreline, walking on the beach should be around ‘low tide’ times. Our beaches are ‘dog friendly’ throughout the
year from Priory Bay to Forelands (Whitecliff Bay may have restrictions during the summer months)

The beach walk finishes at Whitecliff Bay, endeavouring to walk around the point at Whitecliff to Sandown is not
safely possible. Take care on the shore: the RNLI“Respect the Water”(www.respectthewater.com) is helpful to read
when considering walking along coastal paths and beaches or entering the water to swim or play!

If you see someone in trouble on the beach, do not risk your own safety

Sandy Cove
Accessible only on foot or by sea, this beautiful sandy bay is like
landing on a desert island. Flat water and sheltered from the
wind this is a perfect spot to sunbathe, picnic and swim. In the
summer months yachts fill the anchorage and water skiers provide
a spectacle. At high water there are single track and occasionally
steep footpaths through the woods so not suitable for wheelchairs
and buggies.

The Coastal Path and beach walk – Bembridge Harbour . . .

Whether you are walking the beach or the coastal path, both now continue across the mill wall through
Bembridge Marina car park and along the Embankment to Bembridge. There is an option to cross Embankment
Road and follow the old railway line alongside the RSPB Reserve to Harbour Farm, before once again joining
Embankment Road by the houseboats.
* An alternative to the walk around the harbour is a short water-taxi ride from Duver Marina to the Point in
Bembridge, run regularly during the summer months, there is a small charge.

Duver beach Duver Beach

The NT own and manage the St Helens Duver – free
parking for members in their car park.

The Duver is used by many for dog walks, kite flying,
picnics on the grass and enjoying the views over the mill
ponds and harbour.

The beach to the west of the Duver has a large beached
fishing boat that has been made famous on Google
Images!

The Royal IW Golf Club was here, founded in 1882
had members including King Edward VII and Princess
Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s daughter was club president
until her death (1940), the course closed in 1962.

History

The beach is located inside the old
outer mill ponds and at low tide you
are still able to see the rubble.

The mill wall is now a maintained
footpath and defines the boundary
of the inner pond, water would flow
though the gates in the wall on a
flooding tide and then be released
under the old mill stone building at
the far end, grinding grain for flour.

Walking our Coast and Beaches - the two sides to Bembridge Point

The Coastal Path

Once again the IW Coastal Path takes to the lanes at the end of Embankment Road, past the Tollgate Cafe and at
the Pilot Boat Inn take one of the rough lanes to the east up towards Ducie Avenue. If you fancy a detour – the
‘CBD’ of Bembridge is a walk up to the southern end of Ducie Avenue, where our range of shops, restaurants
and pubs, provide something for everyone – many of our‘eatery venues’are dog friendly and the village is well
worth a visit. The true route of the Coastal Path now takes one along the beach from the bottom (north) of Ducie
Avenue to Lane End.

Silversands Beach

At the eastern most end of the harbour lies the dunes and soft silvery sands
of Silversands.TheTollgate Cafe provides cafe classics and ice creams as well
as outstanding views across the harbour. The Bembridge Sailing Club based
on its shores often uses the beach for launching their sailing dinghies and
visiting yachtsman arrive via rowing boat or harbour taxi to explore the vil-
lage of Bembridge. Perfect for a pit stop but not advisable to swim because
of the busy boat traffic, and fast moving currents at the harbour mouth.

History

Under the sand dunes, reaching the full length of the beach are remains of the old sea wall. Paddle steamers
and coal ships used to moor up against it delivering the passengers or cargo to the local merchants.

Point Beach

Just outside of the Harbour mouth with scenic views of

Bembridge Bay, this stoney beach is popular with dog

walkers and families alike. As the tide falls Bembridge

Sands are exposed and the water retreats almost half

a mile. These features are popular with extreme sports

enthusiasts and you often see windsurfers and kite

surfers and, at low water, the occasional sand yacht. This

is one of the best spots on the island for extreme sports

as the water is flat and shallow, suiting both ‘Pros.’ and

beginners. From a local collection “A Bembridge Sand Yacht”

History At low tide there is plenty of sand to allow this form
of sport. This yacht ‘one of the earlier models’ was
During the war this section of coastline was used designed and built by A.R. Watson & Co. at their works
as a seaplane landing spot, gun mountings and in Bembridge. This photo dates from 1912.
remains of concrete structures can still be seen
albeit reclaimed mostly by the sea and sands. Contact Tackt-Isle Adventures to try a modern one!

Walking our Coast and Beaches,
from Bembridge Point to Lane End (the Lifeboat Station)

The Coastal Path

Once again the Coastal Path and beach walk join together and take a route along the beach to Lane End,
however at high tide the route is mainly along the stony top to the beach and an alternative is to take the leafy
bridleway then cuts across from Ducie Avenue to Love Lane. Follow the lane eastwards past the big seaside
homes and estates of East Cliff and Tyne Hall to Swains Road – the beach is once again accessible to the north
on Swains Road, otherwise continue east onto Swains Lane to Lane End Road, then either taking a detour to
the beach at the Lifeboat Station or a quick left and right into Forelands Farm Lane.

Ducie, Under Tyne and Ducie Beach
Swains beaches Under Tyne
Swains Beach
The walk from Bembridge Point
to Lane End is across unspoilt Shops
and undeveloped beaches. An
opportunity to enjoy the natural Lane End
shoreline with rock pools, sand and
old breakwaters.

At Lane End there is a sea wall,
beach huts and all facilities and is
the home of our lifeboats.

Bembridge Lifeboat
and RNLI Station

In 1867 following a disaster off
Bembridge the RNLI raised £580 and
based a self righting lifeboat powered
by oars with launching carriage in
Bembridge due to its key location in the
Solent and proximity to the one of the
busiest shipping lanes in the UK.

The first pier and boat house was built in 1922 so that the new motor driven lifeboat could be launched rapidly
and clear the ledge reef at low tide, during the next 80 years the boat house was modified as new lifeboats were
commissioned, and survived until 2009 when it was completely replaced by the current boat house which was
finished in 2011 at a cost of in excess of £7m. You can still see the old pad under the new boat house at low tide.

The pier and boat house are open for the public and are well worth a visit, not just for the spectacular views
from the end of the pier.

Walking our Coast and Beaches,
Lane End (the Lifeboat Station), Forelands and Whitecliff Bay

The Coastal Path

After the lanes and beaches the Crab & Lobster is an ideal stop to refresh before the cliff path and uphill to
Culver Down....

Forelands and “The Ledge”

Bembridge Ledge is notorious with all sorts of vessels having been caught out by the rocks – including large
commercial craft and even in the 1960s a Royal Navy Submarine – the 1120 tonne “Alliance”. Each year a number
of leisure craft come to grief although Bembridge Ledge buoy, an east cardinal mark, clearly shows the way to go!

“The Ledge Buoy –
Round the Island Race 2016”

by Barry James Wilson

Forelands is one of the best
vantage points for this annual race
with 1500 odd yachts competing
‘anti-clockwise’around the Island.
(2017 RI is Saturday 2 July)

But we are interested in the shoreline and this Shops
rocky platform, part of a natural reef running all
the way from Bembridge Point to Black Rock in The Ledge
Whitecliff bay is ideal for rock pooling, prawning Forelands
and crabbing at low tide.

Having rounded the eastern tip
of the Isle of Wight the scenery
becomes more rugged with the
full brunt of the English Channel
sea and weather taking its toll.

The Ledge is a natural reef which Whitecliff Bay
runs from Bembridge Point
all the way to Black Rock in
Whitecliff Bay.

The beach walk ends in Whitecliff Bay but those who want to continue to Sandown can take to the cliff path up
to Culver Down. As mentioned earlier, it is not safe to endeavour to round the‘White Cliff’.

Walking our Coast and Beaches,
The IW Coastal Path now follows a path up to Culver Down,
across Bembridge Down to Yaverland and Sandown

Quickly rising up over 100 metres Culver Down and Bembridge Down provide some spectacular views of our area –
north across Bembridge Airport to Bembridge Harbour, Seaview and Portsmouth and south west across Sandown
Bay and out into the English Channel. Culver Down is the eastward extremity of the chalk spine of the Isle of Wight
from the Needles, Old Harry Rocks and ultimately Salisbury Plain.

The NT own the land and the historic military features such as Bembridge Fort (a Palmerston Fort, constructed in
1860s and used during WW2). The Yarborough Monument to the east was erected in 1849 in memory of Charles

Anderson-Pelham, the 2nd Baron Yarborough and
later first Earl of Yarborough founder of the Royal
Yacht Squadron – in the 1860s it was moved further
eastwards upon building Bembridge Fort.

The cliffs are important nesting places for seabirds
and are also known to be breeding Peregrine Falcons
and Common Wood Pigeons (Culvers – Culfre, is Old
English for ‘dove ‘). The land is used for grazing by the
NT and local farmers of both cattle and sheep from
time to time. There are many rabbits and a variety of
other wildlife.

On a low tide ‘once a year’ in Bembridge it is ‘traditional’ to ‘Walk to the Fort’ – it is then
most important to circumnavigate it the correct way! Sue Whitmarsh, local artist missed a
recent walk and decided to write a poem: .

‘The Fort Walk’

There’s talk around the village So what’s the point of that
About the state of the tide You ask with a frown
Make a note in your diary
The fort walk is nigh Well, to touch the fort and get back
Before you drown
So we’ll meet down the point
On Silversands beach Oh, and there’s the beach party after
The biggest ever
Bring your kids and your dogs
And old shoes for your feet Family’s building fires
Whatever the weather
Cause when the tide ebbs away Out come the burgers
To reveal the shingle path The beer and the wine
Is when hundreds of locals The beach fills with smoke
Go completely daft And we have a good time
There’ll be a trail of all sorts We call it the Fort Walk
About a mile long May seem crazy to you
In shorts, sock and sandals But its been going for years
Yep! Its really full on Its what Bembridge & St Helens Folk do
Some leave it too late
And head out last Painting and poem
Its a race against time by Sue Whitmarsh
If the tide comes in fast www.suzannewhitmarsh.co.uk

Bembridge Village

The village of Bembridge is one of the largest villages in England and is well supported by both residents and visitors,
we have two shopping areas,‘the Village’(CBD) and‘Lane End’, a community centre with sports fields and a children’s
playground. Numerous clubs, sailing, bowling, football, cricket, drama, dancing, singing, etc. and associations
covering almost anything you may want to do!

In winter some may feel our village is a little quiet but summer brings plenty! The‘CBD’is the original area of the High
Street around Holy Trinity, our Parish Church (Bembridge also has a Methodist Church and St Michaels RC Church).
Below gives the reader an idea of what we have to offer in our CBD and Lane End shopping areas:

and cooked meats, cheese and their delicious pies and sausage rolls.
