St Helens Village

Last year I wrote in here about the challenges facing St Helens parish council. Many of the discretionary
services that the IOW council provided previously, which were in many respects taken for granted, have now
been withdrawn. They all impact on visitors and residents alike. On the Duver, the yearly flow of visitors - dog
walkers; those risking a dip in the balmy waters; or just families having a day out on the beach, still have toilet
and hand washing facilities which are now funded out of the local precept. The Duver, especially since the
building of the new sea wall 4 years ago, is a wonderful leisure facility and, despite some local opposition to
the precept funding, it is a credit to the village that this facility can be enjoyed by all.

Central government is in the process of trying to impose further financial restraints on public services. It is
rather ironic that the Localism Act, introduced in 2011 by the current government, posited the idea of taking
decision making away from central government to be funnelled down to the lowest tiers of government,
amongst them parish councils. What has actually happened is that services have been devolved to lower
levels, but this is often simply a cost-shunting exercise rather than a true devolution of power and fiscal
autonomy - that is, the responsibility is devolved but not the money to fulfil it.

Back in the centre of the village, the green spaces are common land, and they are framed by the village
facilities with the village pub and restaurants, including Ganders, together with the store – St Helens Post
Office and Store with Popples Coffee Shop. The greens can be accessed by all, and are used to host summer
fairs, carnival and sports day as well as active football and cricket clubs during the appropriate seasons!
There’s also car boot sales, however, the parish council does not run or receive any financial benefit from
them. It is therefore quite an achievement to manage the upkeep of the greens and public areas and keep
open the public toilets on the green. As testament to the efforts of the villagers, St Helens again received an
award – the best kept large village on the Isle of Wight. Well done everyone!

With a little help from my BBA friends!

Gerry Price and her faithful labrador I joined the Bembridge
relaxing in the spring sun Business Association about
five years ago when I was
Agapanthus running a small business from
‘Lily of the Nile’ or ‘African Lily’ my home in Bembridge.

Last year I secured some
land at Fakenham Farm on
Eddington Road in St Helens
and was able to make my
dream of running a coastal
plant nursery come true.

Within six months the plot was
transformed from ‘pigpen to nursery’,
complete with planted raised beds,
gravel paths, a poly-tunnel and
two sheds. It involved a lot of work,
which was made easier with help and
advice from my Bembridge Business
Association friends.

Bembridge Building Supplies, on
the High Street in Bembridge, were
able to supply many of the materials I
needed and offered invaluable advice
during the build. As well as a full range
of building materials they also stock
landscaping essentials and aggregates,
such as the gravel we used for the
paths at the nursery. How grateful I
was when I ran out of nails or needed
some more paint that I could get them
from the village!

Our area provides some fantastic walking and

John Woodford John Woodford was born in Bembridge on
Trafalgar Day in 1936 – his family originally
John Woodford outside came to Bembridge in the 1850’s and were
his and Beryls home in 1990’s agricultural workers for the Thornycroft’s at
‘Newtown’ - Steyne.

John’s grandfather, Charles Woodford had
operated the “Imp” a steam pinnace used by
the Bembridge Steamboat Company to ferry
passengers in and out to the mainland ferry
anchored off Under Tyne, in the early 1900’s
he and the “Imp”, were often seen off the
beach at the Lane End regatta or just taking
his family out on the water!

Charles Woodford and the ‘Imp’
John’s father became a butcher at Tom Jordan’s and then in Ryde prior to taking

John was educated at Bembridge and Ryde schools during the war years – his
father as a butcher was an allocater of meat and in the school holidays his father
would take him to Newport market in a Morris 8 (ADL 991), they were one of the
few cars on the road as they were on ‘official business’ they could get fuel. It was
always a long day in Newport starting off at 06:30 and only coming home at tea
time, the highlight of the day was watching the tank training on Brading Down
on the way home!

Upon leaving school John had planned to go to sea as a Ship’s Pilot however
on his entry to Warsash Maritime Acadamy it was discovered that he was colour
blind, which put pay to this ambition. With his butchery background he was
put in the Catering Corp to undertake his national service and ended as the
regimental butcher for the Royal Engineers at Barton Stacey (1955 - 1957).

In 1959 John met and married his wife
Beryl, in Yaverland Church the highlight
of his life. John and Beryl are still happily
married and living in Bembridge.

John, now married settled back into Bembridge life, working with his father at
the butchery and taking over the shop upon his father’s retirement in the 1960’s
but things went wrong with a complicated family and his father’s will, and in
1974 ended up working in Newport then for David Harris’ new supermarket at
Lane End Court.
John joined the Sandown and Shanklin Camera Club and started collecting‘Postal
history’ which has led to buying postcards and he has an amazing collection of
Island and particularly Bembridge history, he was a founder member of the IW
Postcard Club .

John was an active Bembridge Parish Councillor from the late 1950’s until the
1970’s and involved with Bembridge Youth Football Club. As a local historian
John assisted with the annual heritage exhibition in Steyne Park which started
during the 1980’s and grew, now Bembridge Heritage Centre is located in its’own

BEMBRIDGE
HERITAGE CENTRE

New display in 2017 . . .

Stepping back in time you’ll find that Bembridge had several
bakeries serving a population that had yet to experience
supermarkets in the days when almost all shopping was
done locally.

Chicks, Riddicks and Mr Pocock each had a bakehouse on
their premises and Wrays provided bread brought in from
Binstead.

Many a local schoolboy earned his pocket money acting
as delivery boys, cycling miles around the Village in all
weathers to do home deliveries.

Who remembers Mr Nash pushing his blue cart packed with bread and cakes from Riddicks bakery?

As an addition to our popular shops feature The Heritage Centre has a new display of all these bakers, with pictures
and stories from the Families and their staff. You would not recognise those premises today and only The Bakery is
on one of the original sites.

You won’t find any of the old, familiar recipes…these are still closely guarded secrets! Bembridge Buns and Lardy
Cakes! These names will always rekindle a happy memory in the hearts of Villagers from that time.

Do come and visit us during our summer season – we’re just behind the Library between Holy Trinity and the

We Need Your Help to Complete Restoration and Preservation of Historic B-N Islander, G-AVCN

Historic B-N Islander Aircraft Restoration Project
nears Completion

In the latter part of 2017 the Britten-Norman Aircraft Preservation Society will see its project to restore the oldest
Britten-Norman Islander aircraft in existence come to fruition when the aircraft is fully assembled at BNAPS’
restoration workshop near Ryde. The historic aircraft is the third BN-2 Islander produced at Bembridge Airport
and was registered as G-AVCN. 50 years ago G-AVCN was under construction in the original Bembridge Hangar
alongside what is now the Propeller Inn.
First flown from Bembridge Airport on 24 April 1967, G-AVCN later appeared at the Paris Show and on 18 August,
1967, was awarded its Passenger Transport Certificate of Airworthiness.

BN-2 Islander G-AVCN seen here at Bembridge Airport in early 1967 being prepared for a first flight

75

Initially delivered in August, 1967 to Glos Air, an aircraft charter company based at Staverton Airport in
Gloucestershire, on 1 March, 1968, G-AVCN flew the inaugural scheduled passenger service from Guernsey for the
newly formed Channel Islands airline Aurigny Air Services. After some 7 years in the Channel Islands, G-AVCN was
exported to Guadeloupe where it was used by several different operators in the region for over 20 years.
Meanwhile back in 1967 there had been a massive construction effort on land alongside Bembridge Airport where
a new factory building had been brought into use that would provide the means to satisfy the exceptional level of
sales demanded for the BN-2 Islander.
Although originally envisaged as being a complete production unit, the new factory building was devoted to final
assembly, flight test and fitting out to meet customer specific requirements. A major sub-contract had been let
to the British Hovercraft Corporation (BHC) at East Cowes for manufacture and delivery of fuselages and wings
together with other components made by Westland Aircraft at Weston-Super-Mare.

production line running.
Here the newly painted G-AVCN is

being prepared to depart for
the Paris Air Show.

76

As is well known the Britten-Norman Islander became an outstanding success with over 1250 aircraft delivered
with over 500 still in service in more than 100 countries. Remarkably the Islander remains in production with
final assembly and flight testing being undertaken at Britten-Norman’s works at nearby Lee-on-Solent. Marketing,
support, training and manufacturing operations are still based at the company’s Bembridge site.

Now some 50 years on B-N Islander G-AVCN is currently being restored by the Britten-Norman Aircraft Preservation
Society to a high quality museum static exhibition standard, for display to the public. The British Aviation
Preservation Council has already categorised this airframe as nationally significant pending its final restoration
and inspection. It is expected that this quality rebuild, by volunteer ex B-N Engineers, will be graded as a national
benchmark for its aircraft type. The restored aircraft will be a tribute to the inspired technical innovation and
leadership of John Britten and Desmond Norman and all who worked with them over many years to make the
Islander a truly outstanding success.

The restoration project began when Peter Graham, an ex B-N Commercial Manager who by this time was running
Airstream International Group, sponsored the acquisition of Islander c/n 3 together with dismantling and shipping
of the aircraft from Puerto Rico in early 2000, as part of an ambitious plan to restore it to flying condition with
the active support of the B-N Group through the provision of skilled engineering staff and facilities at Bembridge.

The Britten-Norman Aircraft Preservation Society
(BNAPS) was formed as a Charitable Trust to carry the
project forward. BNAPS formation was supported by the
BN Historians organisation and participation as Trustees.

Due to changes in ownership of the B-N Group over time
the project did not proceed as planned, support was
terminated and the dismantled aircraft was stored.

G-AVCN is unloaded from the 40 foot freight container In May 2009 action was taken to see how best to save
in which it was brought home to Bembridge from the project. Meetings were convened involving various
Puerto Rico in early 2000. interested parties to find a place of safe-keeping for
the aircraft, in view of the aircraft’s unique historical
significance and provenance and the fact that it was
at risk, and to restart the project. This activity became
more urgent after it was found that the airframe and
components had been moved into open storage.

G-AVCN on the move to the Harbour Farm workshop in July 2010 New trustees were appointed under the leadership of
thanks to transport provided by H. J. Bennett the previous sponsor Peter Graham, and it was decided
that a new location should be found as the first priority.
With the help of Bembridge Heritage Society and a local
landowner a suitable workshop on a low rent was found
in the East Wight and later fitted out as a workshop by
BNAPS. The airframe was surveyed in March 2010 and in
July 2010 it was transported to the workshop ready for
the start of the restoration programme.

77

The Restoration of “G-AVCN”

BNAPS Supporters Club membership was opened in March 2011 and since that time the project has gone from
strength to strength. Around 80 supporters now provide regular subscriptions. We have regular BNAPS Supporters
Club social meetings, talks and special events all of which are also open to visitors.
BNAPS News is published 6 times a year. Each issue of BNAPS News is given a wide distribution and provides a
means for informing supporters and friends of BNAPS updates of restoration project progress and achievements
and general B-N related news from home and abroad. Bob Wealthy took over from Peter Graham as BNAPS
Chairman in November 2013.
The strength of the project is in the workshop team of volunteers, made up in the majority with skilled and
experienced ex B-N engineers headed up by two ex B-N Operational Directors/Managers. The project has been
very fortunate to receive support from aviation businesses in the UK and abroad, together with help from local
businesses and suppliers.
Work has continued at a steady pace since the end of 2011 and was given significant help as a result of an earlier
Transport Trust grant awarded in 2014 to cover the major part of the work to restore and paint the fuselage. In June
2015 BNAPS was pleased to receive the Transport Trust’s Ron Wilsden award in recognition of the high quality of
the restoration work and the painted fuselage was placed on display at the“Islander 50”commemoration event at
Bembridge Airport on 13 June, 2015.

Work on the wing, fin, rudder and landing gear has been progressed as planned. However, by late 2015 it had
become evident that, due to the limited space in the original workshop at Bembridge, the wing could not be
fully re-assembled. Also the restricted workshop space was a hindrance to some other aspects of the restoration
work. Storage of finished components such as propellers, engines, cowlings, seating etc had become of increasing
concern.

A search for larger workshop premises had been under way for some time and in November last year a suitable
building located on the East Wight was found and terms agreed with the site owners. The move to the larger
workshop took place over the period from mid-February to the end of March, with the fuselage and wing being
moved without incident on 10 March.

After the successful move some of the BNAPS’restoration team involved are seen here in the new workshop.

The new workshop provides all the space needed for completion of the wing rebuild, final assembly and storage of
finished items and means that the project can now proceed to a stage where Islander c/n 3 can be fully assembled
towards the end of 2017.

20 Bembridge Business Association (BBA)
years

20th Anniversary

This year is the 20th anniversary of the formation of the
Bembridge Business Association (’BBA’). Why was the
association formed, and what changes have there been
since then?

In early 1997 a number of local business owners believed

that existing organisations were not doing enough to

promote what Bembridge had to offer. It was thought

that a small booklet giving a short guide to Bembridge

could be produced, with the aim of encouraging

people to use the local shops and other businesses. have had an obvious presence to draw attention to

Bembridge & St Helens Guide

The BBA are proud to be the producers of the Bembridge & St Helens Guide and this is now the 20th edition
and has grown from the initial 20 pages to 100 pages including the cover – it still provides very competitive
advertising rates for a print run and distribution of 25,000.
This is all thanks to the BBA Committee many of whom give a lot of time to the production, supplying photographs, content, editorial, etc., still
enabling the Guide to make a reasonable profit, being able to be put back into the BBA's promotion of our area, through support and sponsorship
of various village events in both St Helens and Bembridge. We thank our advertisers in 2017 for their continued support.

To our readers we are always looking for editorial and photographs of ‘happenings’ in our great villages please do let us have any interesting
articles or photographs, you will be credited - this year as well as the fantastic photographs from local ameteur and professionals we have some
