Welcome to Bembridge and St Helens
and the 2015 edition of our Guide
Here we go again another season for Bembridge and St Helens!
The villages had a great year in 2014, both winning 'Best Village' Awards in different
categories, a lot of hard work will be necessary this year to keep our status. There is
a real community in our villages and we pull together with important matters and
help each other in many ways.
There is so much to do in our area with lots of sports opportunities in both villages including, sailing,
football, cricket, pétanque and the list goes on. We have a beautiful Harbour with opportunities
to 'play' with boats, kayaks, SUPs or a crabline – just whatever you like to do around our amazing
beaches and over six miles of coastline, it's entirely up to you. We have a very relaxed atmosphere
around here. There are lots of nice eating places from beach cafés to more formal restaurants and
pubs all giving lots of choices for lots of taste. This year we are holding a 'Bembridge Harbour Food
Festival' at the end of the season (over the weekend of 2/4 October), it will be a great place to come
and 'Feast on all that's local from our Land and Sea'.
It's our little secret corner of the Island, so don't just drive through, stop and take your time, breathe
in the sea air and just relax.
If you don't already know me, I am Gail Wade and run Bembridge Barbers right in the village centre.
I, or others on our committee, are always pleased to speak to anyone about the villages, if only for
directions, where to go or what to do . We all look forward to welcoming you in our villages.

In the late 1950s John Britten and Desmond
Norman with B-N (manufacturers of the Islander
aircraft) began designing cushion craft or
hovercraft and in 1965 they set up a cross-Solent
hovercraft service as Hovertravel.
2015 marks the 50th anniversary of this
remarkable achievement
From humble beginnings with one SRN6 craft,
‘caravan terminals’ and pilots collecting the
tickets, thanks to immense effort of staff and fantastic support of our customers, including so many
locals and tourists – over 29 million have travelled on our Southsea to Ryde service
Hovertravel is the world’s longest running commercial hovercraft service,
is the only scheduled passenger hovercraft service in Europe
and offers the fastest way to cross the Solent.
The current fleet includes two API-88 craft, Freedom 90 and Island Express. At
the end of the year we will see the completion of two new 12000TD by
Griffon Hoverwork to enter service in 2016. During 2015 there will be a
variety of promotions, special offers, events and a limited edition range
of 50th anniversary souvenirs

Bembridge pays tribute to the
Britten-Norman Islander
2015 will see the 50th anniversary of the first
flight of the Britten-Norman Islander light
transport and utility aircraft.
The Islander is the most successful British
aircraft ever and was created by what could
be considered as one of the last British aircraft companies to come into
existence, the Britten-Norman Company (B-N), based at Bembridge Airport.
The 50th anniversary of the first flight will be commemorated at the
