have been lots of changes during the last century. We have included just some of our advertisers'

During the 20s and 30s The Farm Shop was F R Bartlett's Fish Shop and later (1945) Jack Reynolds
then Ben Harris (Chemist) and upon his retirement became Steane Chemist. Bembridge Flower
Shop was the home to Love & Sons, Builders nearly 100 years ago. Shêd bistro makes up this trio
which in the 50s & 60s was Framptons Sweet Shop.

This 1908 picture was taken before the War Memorial was built. As you can see Woodford Butchers
shop used to be there – the building was moved to where it is today so that the War Memorial
could be built.
Bembridge Jewellers is now in the old Midland Bank building on Sherbourne Street – the only bank
now remaining in Bembridge is Lloyds and it is hoped that the recent reduction in opening hours
is not the slippery slope to closing the last bank!

the road his wife had the Drapery and
Haberdashery which was then changed
to Fosters and lastly Caroles.

Weaver Brothers, nearly 200 years in Bembridge

Weaver Family History:
Now spanning six generations, the Weaver family have lived
and worked in Bembridge for nearly two hundred years. The
first family member to live in Bembridge and work in the fu-
neral business was Thomas (left). A soldier with Wellington in
the Peninsular Wars and Waterloo, he settled in Bembridge in
1829 and was Sexton at Bembridge Parish Church (Holy Trinity)
and the grave digger.
His son Henry (below, right) was a keen businessman and be-
came a Building Contractor and Undertaker. He also ran the
Marine Hotel, (latterly the Rowbarge Pub) at the harbour.
Henry’s sons, Harry, Percy and Alf, formed Weaver Brothers, tak-
ing forward the business he had created. Harry was the Under-
taker whilst Percy and Alf concentrated on the building work.
Arthur (bottom, left), Percy’s son, carried on the firm and during
the Second World War diversified for the war effort and became
an agricultural contractor. After the end of the war he took up
the building business again and forged ahead with the help
of his son Terry (bottom, right). Arthur was also Hon Sec of the
local RNLI branch at Bembridge and ran the local fire station
which was, and still is, manned by retained staff.
The Present Weaver's generations:
Terry and Venetia met at a dance at the Brading Haven Yacht
Club and started courting – their father’s Arthur and Hector
Humphray (who was landlord of the Crab and Lobster Pub),
were great friends and worked together in building before the
War. Married on 3rd April 1965 they celebrate their Golden
Wedding Anniversary this year.

Keen on cars, Terry joined
the Isle of Wight Car Club
in October 1957 and
started rally driving, but
soon became navigator
in a bid to stop getting
lost! Terry started rallying
with Brian Greaves on the
mainland, competing in
the RAC International Rally
then enjoyed entering
special stages rallies with
driver Mike Davidson in
England, Spain & Belgium.

Terry and other members of the Car Club built upon and expanded the Isle of Wight National Rally
which was a two-day event, a night rally on the mainland followed by a one-day rally on the Island

and took the firm into new areas with the
development of the firm’s premises in Lane End
Road. Firstly by building the Lane End Court
shops and flats which were completed in 1966
(above) and then by continuing to develop
these and the rest of the site with the addition
of a number of commercial units and flats in
what has become Weavers Yard. The shops at
Lane End have become an integral part of the
village with the Co-op supermarket and Post
Office based there, as well as the ever popular
Crumbs Deli & Café and the EMH Charity Shop.
The Anu Natural Beauty Salon was a recent
addition to an already busy parade.

Just behind the parade of shops is Weavers Yard, Building Contractors
originally ‘The Gravel Pit’, supplying material Independent Funeral Directors
used for roads in the village. In 1932 it was
purchased by the Weaver family and gradually
they moved their business from their workshop
