Editor's Note

Warm Interact Greetings,
It is the moment of joy for me serving as Editor of the
Magazine. Though Interact is new
for me but I learned a lot from it and my home club
Interact Club of Shivalik International School.
The past one month has been really buzzing around
with a lot of interest on the
Magazine, especially when you have a leader who need
everything perfect and markable.
Hopefully we have been able to keep up the standard
that have been set over the year.
What initially started as a plan to come up with a
magazine loaded with
information and basic guidelines along with district
events that a Interactor must be well informed about.
I would like to thank the faith of District Interact
Representative, Itr. Mayank Maheshwari had in
me to play a role in bringing this magazine and who
took all the pain to design, imagine the theme and
providing necessary resources.

5

Thanks to constant support of him, the team always
had
the energy to keep going on and on irrespective of the
time, without losing focus.

Hope you all enjoy the contents of this 1st ever District
Annual E-Magazine "Abhivyakti"
On behalf of District
Thank you all!

Dear Interactors,
Warm Interact Greetings !
It gives me immense pleasure to write my message for
the 1st Annual District Magazine "Abhivyakti" 2021-22.
It makes me emotional recalling the day I joined
interact a few years back as
a member of Interact Club of Aligarh Lock City and now
I am writing the message for this District
Magazine as a DIR. Undoubtedly it became possible
only with the help and support of senior
Rotarians and leaders of our District. Past year has been
very challenging as well as it gave
me many lessons which can be helpful for me
throughout my life. Learning with Interact was
always best part in my life. I also thank my district
leaders for giving me the responsibility to
run an Interact District Council which is now a well-
balanced team.

13

There are still many challenges for me to look after.
We have to increase the number of clubs as
well as number of members in our clubs. As
compared to the geography, our District is so big that
it always keeps me encouraging for a higher no. of
clubs as well as a large no of Interact
members dedicated to work for society. That's
becoming possible with the guiding support of our
DG Rtn Mukesh Singhal sir. His efforts on these issues
are just an inspiration for me. I also like to
thank my leader DICC Rtn. Ashwini Dixit sir for
standing with me always whenever needed.
Looking forward to give my services in Rotaract from
next session but always available for Interact
whenever the coming leaders need me.

"What you need, is an Event, to remember for a lifetime.”
I, am really honored to be able to get this opportunity to
convey my message to the Interact Organization of our

HISTORY OF ROTARY

On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr,
Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehr’s
office for what would become known as the first Rotary club
meeting.
Harris’ desire for camaraderie among business associates
brought together these four men and eventually led to an
international organization of service and fellowship.
Each of the first four Rotarians, and Harry L. Ruggles, who is
often called the “fifth Rotarian,” brought different
professional perspectives to the organization.

The first four Rotarians. From left: Gustavus Loehr,
Silvester Schiele, Hiram E. Shorey, Paul P. Harris.

31

Paul Harris, age 28, Rotary’s founder, Harris, was born in
in 1896. Racine, Wisconsin, USA, on 19 April
1868. He was raised by his paternal
grandparents in Vermont and
attended the University of Vermont,
Princeton, and the University of Iowa.
Harris, a lawyer, was Rotary
president from 1910 to 1912 and a
member of the Rotary Club of
Chicago until his death on 27 January
1947.

Hiram E. Shorey as a young Loehr, a mining engineer, was born
man. on 18 October 1864 in Carlinville,
Illinois, USA. He was a Rotarian for
only a few years, never holding office
at the club or international level. But
that first Rotary meeting was held in
his office, Room 711 of the Unity
Building in downtown Chicago. He
died in Chicago on 23 May 1918.

Silvester Schiele. Before Schiele, a coal dealer, served as the
December 1945. Chicago club’s first president in 1905
and Rotary International’s treasurer
from July to December 1945. Born in
Terre Haute, Indiana, USA, in June
1870, Schiele attended Terre Haute
Business College and served in the
U.S. Army during the Spanish-
American War. He was president of
the Schiele Coal Company from 1902
until his retirement in 1939.

32

Harry L. Ruggles, October Originally from Michigan, Ruggles
1912 was a graduate of Northwestern
University in Evanston, Illinois, and
joined Rotary at its second meeting.
He was treasurer of the Chicago club
during its first year, club president
from 1908 to 1910, and a Rotary
director from 1912 to 1913. He is
known for having introduced singing
to Rotary club meetings.

His printing company, H.L. Ruggles & Co., printed the first issue
of The National Rotarian and the first Rotary songbook. He
died on 23 October 1959, an honorary member of seven clubs
in addition to his home club, the Rotary Club of Chicago.

When the Rotary Club of Chicago published this member roster in
October 1905, the club had grown to 21 members, including two

honorary members.

HISTORY OF INTERACT

Founder

Nitish Chandra Laharry

(1892-1964)

Nitish Chandra Laharry, the first RI
president from Asia, had been a
Rotarian for 33 years when he began
his tenure in the organization's
highest office. Appropriately, he was
elected at Rotary's first convention in
Asia: Tokyo,1961.

Nitish (NITH-ish- the first syllable rhymes with WITH) was borne and
educated in Calcutta. He held a BA in English from the University of
Calcutta as well as master's degrees in economics and political
science. He also earned a degree in law, and for four years was an
advocate of the Calcutta High Court. But then he decided to venture
into India's burgeoning film industry. He build a studio, hired actors
and produced the state of Bengal's first motion picture, a satire on
Indians who visited England and came back more British than the
British. Then a depression hit Bengal, and he switched to film
distribution. He traveled so widely throughout India that his wife,
Bindubala, kept an alternate suitcase packed. he even gave up
Rotary - briefly - because of sparse makeup opportunities.
After 34 years of business travel, Nitish was ready to retire. Then
Rotary beckoned, and the travel started all over again. He had
earned his credentials, In 1944, when he was president of the Rotary
Club of Calcutta, one of history's worst famines struck Bengal.
Under his leadership, Calcutta Rotarians set up food canteens,
Rotarian doctors treated patients free and Rotarians throughout
India sent the club's relief fund 100 times over its goal. During the
war, Nitish had been vice chairman of the US Army Entertainment
Organization. Following the victory he organized disbursement
center for the Indian government.

34

In 1958, Nithsh organized Rotary's Asian Regional
Conference in Delhi attracting more than 2900 registrants
from 21 countries and setting a record for years to come.
Sadly, his beloved Bindubala, ill for many years, was
unable to assist his presidency, and their daughters Bira
and Mira, took over many of her duties. A deeply spiritual
man, Nitish viewed Rotary's idal of service as a form of
worship to God. The "Kindly Light" in which he so
fervently believed guided him home 21 July 1964.

35

1st Interact Club

As early as the 1920s, individual Rotary clubs supported youth
activities, sponsoring troops of scouts, and taking part in a Boys’
Week that encouraged young people to be good citizens and
promoted education, health, hygiene, and vocation.

Members of the first Interact club, the Interact Club of Melbourne High School,
form the letter I, surrounded by members of their sponsor club, the Rotary Club

of Melbourne, Florida, USA. 1962.

Rotary clubs also sponsored regional programs like Uthrotar in
Michigan and Wisconsin in the U.S. In Florida, Rotary clubs
worked with Wheel clubs for teenage boys.

By the late 1950s, Rotary members were discussing ways to
strengthen their efforts to interest young people in community
service and expand their worldviews, possibly through a Rotary-
wide program designed for them. After a few years of study and
planning, Rotary’s Board of Directors in 1962 approved the
name Interact, which had been suggested by a committee to
express “inter-club and inter-member cooperation on all planes
of activity — local, national, and international.”

36

Rotary members, along with students, put Interact into action.
The Interact Club of Melbourne High School, sponsored by the
Rotary Club of Melbourne, Florida, USA, became the first
Interact club on 5 November 1962.

One of the Interact club’s founding members spoke on a panel
at the 1963 Rotary International Convention, telling attendees
how enthusiastic students were about the club. Although his
school offered many other clubs, he noted that Interact was
unique because its association with Rotary allowed students
insight into a wide variety of professions and offered them an
international perspective.

37

WHAT IS INTERACT ?

LEADERSHIP IS AN ESSENTIAL ASPECT OF ROTARY—AND
WE OFFER BOTH CLUBS AND PROGRAMS TO HELP

EMERGING LEADERS DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS. THROUGH
THESE GROUPS, PARTICIPANTS STRENGTHEN THEIR
LEADERSHIP SKILLS, SERVE THEIR COMMUNITIES,
INCREASE THEIR WORLD UNDERSTANDING, BUILD
FRIENDSHIPS, AND MORE.

Interact is a club for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect
with others in their community or school. Interact club
members have fun while carrying out service projects and
learning about the world. Interact clubs organize at least two
service projects a year: one that benefits their community
and one that encourages international understanding. While
Interact clubs receive guidance from individual Rotary clubs,
they govern and support themselves.

Today, more than 3,43,000 young adults belong to one of the
15000 clubs located in 145 different countries, making
Interact a truly international phenomenon.

38

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF
INTERACT

1. To recognize and develop constructive leadership and
personal integrity.

2. To encourage and practice thoughtfulness of and
helpfulness to others.

3. To create an awareness of the importance of home and
family.

4. To build respect for the rights of others, based on
recognition of the worth of each individual.

5. To emphasize acceptance of individual responsibility as
the basis of personal success, community improvement,
and group achievement.

6. To develop life skills including self development, time
management, and personal finances.

7. To recognize the dignity and value of all useful
occupations as opportunities to serve society.

8. To provide opportunities for gaining increased knowledge
and understanding of community, national, and world
affairs.

9. To open avenues of personal and group action leading to
the advancement of international understanding and
goodwill toward all peoples

39

REASONS TO JOIN
INTERACT

Joining an Interact club is a life-changing way to shape your
young mind into a meaningful one. Once you make your
dream interact project ideas a reality, you’re never going to
want to stop.
Here are reasons as to why we highly recommend you join
or start your own.

1. It teaches you the value of community service

Far too many people need our help in this world. When more
of the young generation realizes this, we will be living in a
much better place.
Joining an interact club means opening your eyes to the
value of community service. You can experience what it’s like
to serve those in need, whether it’s in your local area or third
world countries.

2. It lets you meet other people, make new friends and see
places

Plenty of Interact clubs goes beyond local projects. In fact,
many young members of these organizations have the rare
opportunity to travel the world to serve others. Their eyes
become open this early on to how other children are living in
other countries.
Joining an interact also let you meet other people and make
new friends. At this stage, you are already growing your
connection and widening your circle, which can be beneficial
in the future.

40

3. It will look good on your resume in college

Community service entails significant points once you start
applying in universities. When admissions see that you are
an active member of an interact, it’s a good way to introduce
yourself.
Scholarship opportunities in select schools are also made
available among those who are active members of an
interact club. This opportunity presents a rare chance to
make the most of your college education and future career.

4. It makes your life meaningful at an early age

Community service changes you for the better. When you
start to commit yourself to missions like this at a young age,
you’ll realize there’s so much more to life than dates, proms,
and social media.

WORLD INTERACT WEEK

World Interact Week is celebrated every year during
the week of 5 November to commemorate the
founding of the first Interact club in 1962. This year
World Interact Week is 1-7 November and
Interactors around the world will be taking action
and sharing how their Interact clubs are making a
difference in their communities.

To mark this occasion with Interactors and
Rotarians around the world, Interact clubs, in
partnership with their sponsor Rotary clubs, are
encouraged to participate in joint projects during
World Interact Week.

World Interact Week is an excellent opportunity for
clubs to publicize, promote, and inform the
community about the great work accomplished by
its members. Clubs should encourage community
members to get involved with Interact projects.

In the past, RI required Interact clubs to
successfully complete four specific activities in
order to receive recognition for World Interact
Week. Now, Interact clubs and their sponsor Rotary
clubs have the opportunity to explore a variety of
ways to participate in World Interact Week.
