Working with Media Class 5

Working with Media

Filmora is a fast, easy way to turn photos and videos into great-looking movies and slide shows you
can share with your class, on the Web, or DVDs. It also enables you to create video documentaries
and slide shows on your computer, complete with professional-looking titles, transitions, effects,
music and even narration.

Starting a Project:

When you first open Filmora you can choose new project after selecting the required aspect ratio.
This aspect ratio should be based on your target device.

The City School /Academics/Computing Curriculum/Class 5/2020-2021 Page 9 of 102

Working with Media Class 5

The default aspect ratio is 16:9, but you can change it to 1:1 or 9:16 if you want to make videos for
Instagram or other social media.

Note: You can use Filmora9 without logging in, but unless you are logged into a Wondershare ID that
has a paid license associated with it, there will be a watermark in your exported videos.

How to select multiple files at once

• If you hold down the Ctrl key or the Shift key as you click a file, you will be able to continue
selecting more files.
• Ctrl allows you to select multiple files that are anywhere on your file list, not necessarily next
to each other.
• Shift allows you to select a group of files that are next to each other by clicking one file, and
then holding Shift and clicking the last file. All the files in-between are then selected.

Basic Editing
Editing Video

After your media files (videos, images, etc.) have been imported to Filmora9 (latest Filmora version
9), it’s time to start editing. This tutorial will go over arranging clips in your timeline, cleaning up
your footage, editing out unwanted parts, and more.

To select a single media file: click on its thumbnail.

To select multiple media files: press and hold [Ctrl], and then click the thumbnails of the media you
want to select. To select a sequence of media files: click the first thumbnail in the sequence, press
and hold [Shift], and then click the last thumbnail in the sequence.

Right-click on the thumbnail of the media you want and choose one of these options:

Insert: add your media to the selected track at the playhead. Any media that is already in the track
on the right side of the inserted media will move to the right by the length of the inserted clip.

Overwrite: add your media to the selected track at the playhead, and replace any media already
occupying the space your added media takes up.

The City School /Academics/Computing Curriculum/Class 5/2020-2021 Page 15 of 102

Working with Media Class 5

Append (add to the end): add your media as the last piece of media in the selected track.

Add to new track: add your media to a newly created track which has no other media.

Trim Video Clips
If you need to trim from the beginning or end of a video clip (or another piece of media), hover your
mouse over the left or right edge of the clip in your timeline until the trim tool shows. Then,
click and drag the edge of your clip forwards or backwards to trim off the unwanted portion.

If you need to cut out a section in the middle of a video clip, drag the playhead to the start point of
the unwanted section and press the scissors icon to split the clip, then drag the playhead to the end
of the unwanted section and press the scissors again. Now that the unwanted section is on its own
you can select it and press the delete icon to remove it.

Filmora9 also has an option for you to ‘quick trim’ from the start or end of a clip. In the timeline,
place the playhead on the frame you want to trim to, right-click on the clip, and select Trim Start to
Playhead or Trim End to Playhead depending on whether you want to delete what is behind the
playhead or in front of it, respectively.

Cropping Video Clips

Follow the steps below to crop out and zoom into parts of your video clips:

1. Right-click on the clip in the Timeline

2. Select the Crop and Zoom option from the menu or click the Crop icon to open the Crop and
Zoon panel.

3. In the pop-up window, move and adjust the rectangle to surround the area you want to
crop. You can also choose the pre-set from the following pre-set dimensions: 16:9, 4:3, 1:1
or 9:16.

Pan & Zoom
A ‘Pan’ is when the camera moves right and left (i.e. between two subjects) while filming and a
‘Zoom’ is when the camera either moves closer to one part of the frame or seems to through the use
of a zoom lens (i.e. for a close up on a character’s face). These effects, or any other camera
movements, can be simulated in Filmora9 using the Pan and Zoom feature. Here’s how:
• Drag and drop a video clip or image into a video track.
• Right-click on the video in the track and choose Crop and Zoom.

To add transitions to video clips

• Once you find a transition you want to use in your project, drag and drop it to the desired
location on the timeline.
• Instead of dragging and dropping a transition, you can also place the playhead at the exact
spot on the timeline where you want to add a transition, right-click on a transition you want
to add, and select Apply.
• You can also use the Apply to all option if you would like to add the same transition to all
video clips in your project. To add a random transition to all video clips, choose Random to
All.

Adding Visual Effects to Videos
Keep in mind that if you are applying a transition at the beginning of your timeline you first need to
make sure that you've placed a video clip on the timeline. You can add a transition to the start
(prefix transition) or the end (postfix transition) of any video or image on the timeline, or add
transitions between clips.
Customize a Pre-set Transition
Once you've added a transition to the timeline you can alter its duration by dragging one of its edges
in the timeline.
Alternatively, you can right-click on the transition you've added and select Duration from the menu.
Change the duration in the pop-up Duration Settings window and Click OK to apply the change.

The default duration of all Transitions is 2 seconds. To change the default duration, select
Preferences under the Wondershare Filmora menu and switch to the Editing Tab. Find Transition
Duration and enter the new duration. This will become the new default duration for all transitions in
your project.

You can also change a transition’s duration by right-clicking on the transition in the timeline,
selecting Show properties, and entering a new duration. In this menu, you can also select a

Adding Visual Effects to Videos
Filmora9’s Effects Tab

Filmora9 has plenty of professional-looking effects that take only a few seconds to use. Click on the
Effects tab to start browsing through Filmora9’s collection of visual effects.
The effects are organized in three different categories, Filters, Overlays, and Utility Effects. You just
click on a category and select the effect you want to apply to the footage. All effects in Filmora9 can
be dragged and dropped to a specific location of the timeline. You have to make sure that you place
an effect on the video track above the one on which the video clip is located.
In case you want to apply an effect over an entire video clip, you can drag an effect you selected
from the Effects tab onto a video clip.

Using the Filters, Overlays and Utility Effects to enhance videos

The Filters category contains more than a hundred pre-sets you can apply to videos. Each effect, you
can find in the Filters category can be used to enhance the colours in a video or to distort the image.
Overlays effects add a new layer over a video to which they are applied and you can use them to add
a Film Reel effect that makes your footage look like it was recorded on a vintage camera or to create
the Bokeh effect. In addition, you can use the Cinema 21:9 overlay if you want to change a video’s
aspect ratio quickly.
Utility effects enable you to conceal a face in your video, crop or mask videos or create the tilt-shift
effect. Applying the Auto Enhance effect will automatically adjust the video’s sharpness and make
the colours more vibrant.

Fine-tuning the Video Effects settings

Each filter, overlay and utility effect you add to the timeline can be edited from the Video tab.
Double-click on a visual effect on the timeline or on a video clip if you want to adjust its settings. In
case you added an effect to a clip a Video tab will pop up on the screen, that enables you to increase
or reduce an effect’s intensity via the Alpha slider.
You can remove an effect from a video by unchecking the tick box next to an effect, or you can turn
off all the effects you added to a video clip by ensuring that the Video Effects checkbox is not
checked.

Adding Elements to Videos in Filmora9

In addition to an impressive collection of visual effects, Filmora9 also features a rich library of
elements. This enables you to add arrows to a video that draw the viewer’s attention to an
important detail in the shot or emojis that make your videos more cheerful.
You can edit all elements you add to the timeline by double-clicking on them and adjusting their
settings in the Video tab.
Optionally, you can adjust the element’s position from the Preview screen by clicking on it and
dragging it to its new location. Dragging one of the corners of an element in an inward or outward
direction will reduce or increase its size.

Add Text & Titles & Openers & End Credits to Your Video
In Filmora9, there are openers, titles, lower 3rds, subtitles and end credit templates. You can add a
title or other text effect to your video easily using one of the customizable premade templates.
Go to the Titles tab and find a title you like. You can see what the title looks like in the Preview
window before adding it to your video.
After that, you can drag it from the Titles library and drop it into the timeline. You can also right-click
on the title effect you want and select Apply to add it to the timeline.

Remove a Title

To remove a title effect, just select it in the timeline and hit the Delete key on your keyboard.

You can also click the delete icon in the toolbar, or right-click on the title and choose Delete.

Export your video to your computer
To export your video to your computer, click the export button and choose the Local tab. Then,
select the format you want to export in. Currently, Filmora9 supports the following formats: WMV,
MP4, AVI, MOV, F4V, MKV, TS, 3GP, MPEG-2, WEBM, GIF and MP3.

After selecting the output format, you can
rename the video and change the location on
your computer where you save it. You can
also check the output resolution, frame rate,
size, and duration before you export. To
change your export settings (i.e. resolution,
bit rate, and frame rate) click the SETTINGS
button.
In the settings window, there are three quality
levels: Best, Better and Good. The only
difference between them is the Bit Rate. You
can adjust this or other parameters, such as
Resolution, and Frame Rate in this window.

It is best to export your video with the same
settings as your original video.
When you’re finished adjusting your export
settings, press OK to save them. Then, after
you have closed the Settings window, press
the Export button in the Export window.

Note:
• The size of the video depends on the length of the project and the bit rate. If the file size
looks too big, you can try changing the bit rate in the Settings window to make it smaller.
• If you want to export HEVC, you need to upgrade the latest Windows 10 and install the HEVC
video extensions by Microsoft.

Export by the device you want to play your video on
In the Device tab under Format, you can choose to output your video according to the ideal settings
for different types of devices, such as iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, Samsung Galaxy phones, PlayStation
4s, and more. You can make manual adjustments to your settings as well by clicking the Settings

Presenting Your Ideas

What is PowerPoint:

PowerPoint is a computer program that allows you to create and show slides to support a
presentation. You can combine text, graphics and multimedia content to create professional
presentations. PowerPoint presentations are made up of a series of slides. Slides contain the
information you will present to your audience. This might include text, pictures, and charts.

Understanding Slides and Slide Layouts:
Before you start creating presentations, you will need to know the basics of working with slides and
slide layouts.

When you insert a new slide, it will usually have placeholders. Placeholders can contain different
types of content, including text and images. Some placeholders have placeholder text, which you can
replace with your own text. Others have thumbnail icons that allow you to insert pictures, charts,
and videos.

Slides have different layouts for placeholders, depending on the type of information you want to
include. Whenever you create a new slide, you'll need to choose a slide layout that fits your content.

Slide Transitions:

A transition can be as simple as fading to the next slide or as flashy as an eye-catching effect.
PowerPoint makes it easy to apply transitions to some or all of your slides, giving your presentation
an exciting and attractive look.

Add Transitions between Slides:
Here is the procedure to add transitions between slides:

1. Select the desired slide from the Slide Navigation pane.
This is the slide that will appear after the transition.
2. Click the Transitions tab, then locate the Transition to
This Slide group. By default, None is applied to each
slide.
3. Click the More drop-down arrow to display all
transitions.
4. Click a transition to apply it to the selected slide. This
will automatically preview the transition.
5. You can use the Apply To All command in the
Timing group to apply the same transition to all
slides in your presentation. Keep in mind that this
will modify any other transitions you have
applied.

Modifying Transitions:

You can quickly customize the look of a transition by
changing its direction.

1. Select the slide with the transition you want to modify.
2. Click the Effect Options command, and
choose the desired option. These options
will vary depending on the selected
transition.
3. The transition will be modified, and a
preview of the transition will appear.
Note: Some transitions do not allow you to modify
the direction.

time or one after the other.

1. From the Animation Pane, select an effect. A
drop-down arrow will appear next to the effect.
2. Click the drop-down arrow. You will see three
start options:
a. Start on Click: This will start the effect
when the mouse is clicked.
b. Start With Previous: This will start the
effect at the same time as the previous
effect.
c. Start After Previous: This will start the
effect when the previous effect ends.
3. Select the desired start option.
Note: When you preview the animations, all of the
effects will play through automatically. To test effects
that are set to Start on Click, you will need to play the
slide show.

Remove an Animation:

1. Select the small number located next to the animated object.
2. Press the Delete key. The animation will be deleted.

Change Animation Effect’s Timing:

1. From the Effect Options dialogue box, select the Timing tab.
2. From here, you can add a delay before the effect starts, change the duration of the effect,
and control whether or not the effect repeats.

Charts:

A chart is a tool you can use to communicate data graphically. Including a chart in a presentation
allows your audience to see the meaning behind the numbers, which makes it easy to visualize
comparisons and trends.

Chart Types:
PowerPoint has many different types of charts, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your
data. To use charts effectively, you will need to understand how different charts are used.
• Column charts use vertical bars to represent data. They can work with many different types
of data, but they are most frequently used for comparing information.
• Line charts are ideal for showing trends. The data points are connected with lines, making it
easy to see whether values are increasing or decreasing over time.
• Pie charts make it easy to compare proportions. Each value is shown as a slice of the pie, so
it is easy to see which values make up the percentage of a whole.
• Bar charts work just like column charts, but they use horizontal bars instead of vertical bars.
• Area charts are similar to line charts, except that the areas under the lines are filled in.

Insert a Chart in Slide:

1. Select the Insert tab, then click the Chart command in the Illustrations group.

2. A dialogue box will appear. Select a category from the left pane, and review the charts that
appear in the right pane.
3. Select the desired chart, then click OK.

4. A chart and a spreadsheet will appear.
The data that appears in the spreadsheet
is placeholder source data you will
replace with your information. The
source data is used to create the chart.

5. Enter data into the worksheet.

6. If necessary, click and drag the lower-
right corner of the blue line to increase
or decrease the data range for rows and
columns. Only the data enclosed by the
blue lines will appear in the chart.

7. When you're done, click the X to close
the spreadsheet.

8. The chart will be completed.

You can edit the chart data at any time by
selecting your chart and clicking the Edit
Data command on the Design tab.

Advanced Presentation Options:

You will now learn how to rehearse and record slide shows in advance. You will also learn about
alternative presentation options, such as creating a video of your presentation or presenting your
slide show online to remote audiences. Finally, you will learn how to customize your presentation
with hidden or rearranged slides.

Rehearsing slide show timings
Rehearsing timings can be useful if you want to set up a presentation to play at a certain speed
without having to click through the slides to present it. Think of it as a tool to help you practice
presenting your slide show. Using this feature, you can save timings for each slide and animation.
PowerPoint will then playback the presentation with the same timings when you present it.

To Rehearse Timings:
1. Select the Slide Show tab, then locate the Set Up group.
2. Click the Rehearse Timings command. You will be taken to a full-screen view of your
presentation.

3. Practice presenting your slide show. When you are ready to move to the next slide, click the
Next button on the Recording toolbar in the top-left corner. You can also use the right
arrow key.

4. When you have reached the end of the show, a dialogue box will appear with the total time
of your presentation.

5. If you are satisfied with your timings, click Yes.

Recording a Slide Show:

The Record Slide Show feature is similar to the Rehearse Timings feature, but it's a bit more
comprehensive. If you have a microphone for your computer, you can even record voiceover
narration for the entire presentation. This is useful if you plan on using your slide show for a self-
running presentation or a video. Your mouse won't show up on the screen in recorded slide shows,
so if you want to point out details on the screen you can use PowerPoint's laser pointer option.

To record a slide show:

1. Click the Slide Show tab, then locate the Set Up group.
2. Click the Record Slide Show drop-down arrow. Select either Start Recording from Beginning
or Start Recording from Current Slide.

3. A dialogue box will appear. Select the desired options. Remember, you can only record
narration if you have a microphone attached to your computer.

4. Click Start Recording. Your presentation will open to a full screen.
5. Perform your slide show. Make sure to speak clearly into the microphone if you are
recording narration. When you are ready to move to the next slide, click the Next button on
the Recording toolbar in the top-left corner or use the right arrow key.

6. When you reach the end of the show, PowerPoint will close the full-screen view.

7. Your slide show timings and narration are now included in your presentation. The slides with
narration will be marked with a speaker icon in the bottom-right corner.

To remove narration or timings from a recorded slide show:

1. Click the Slide Show tab, then locate the Set Up group.
2. Click the Record Slide Show drop-down arrow.
3. Hover the mouse over Clear, then select the desired option.

Exporting a presentation as a video:
The Create a Video feature allows you to save your presentation as a video. This can be useful
because it lets your viewers watch the presentation whenever they want. To make sure your viewers
have enough time to view each slide, you might want to rehearse the timings or record your slide
show before using this feature.

To create a video:

1. Click the File tab to access Backstage view.
2. Select Export, then click Create a Video. Video export options will appear on the right.
