Willow’s Trip to the Beach

Written and Illustrated by Amy Shennan

“Quick! Quick! The bus is nearly here!” called Willow with excitement. Molly sat and wagged
her long, ruby red tail as she watched Willow and her younger sister Wren waving at the bus.

Willow and Wren sat down with their little pink wellies dangling over
the seat. “We’re going to the beach!” giggled Willow.

The bus took its time going along the quiet, country road. Willow
had shown Wren all the sights: the black and white Bute ferry, the ice
cream shop with different flavours on display, the post office, then the
farms with their fluffy sheep and cows grazing in the fields.

Splash! Molly had leapt into the sea,
making big waves as the water swirled
around her.

Grandpa, Nana, Willow and Wren began
to walk across the beach. “What a
beautiful day!” exclaimed Grandpa.

The waves gently moved across the sand
as they reached the shore. Willow and
Wren shrieked with laughter as they ran
away from the chasing water, leaving
wet, little footprints behind them.
“The wellies were certainly a good idea,”
laughed Nana.

They continued to walk up the beach for
some time when Nana suddenly realised the
time. “Oh no!” she called. “It’s already 12
o’clock, the time of the bus!”

She turned around to see the bus moving
along the road. “Quick! There’s the bus.”
She waved at Grandpa, Willow and Wren.
Grandpa took the girls’ hands as they tried
to make the bus.

“Molly, Molly!” Willow shouted. Molly
looked up with a wet, sandy head from the
hole she had been digging in the sand. She
came bounding towards them with the large
stick she had been playing with earlier.

Everyone turned back to look out for the bus. They soon left the wet, brown sand. Grandpa turned
around to make sure everyone was here. “Where’s Molly?!” He looked around frantically. He couldn’t
see her. “Stop!” he called to everyone. “Molly’s not here,” he answered to the puzzled faces of Nana,
Willow and Wren.

“Where is Molly?” asked Willow worriedly.

Willow suddenly spotted
something. She ran forward.
“Look!” she gasped as she
pointed to the Y-shaped stick
lying on the sand. “That
must be Molly’s stick.” Willow
hoped that this would lead
them to Molly or another clue
at least.

They soon discovered a trail
of paw prints ahead of them.
“Another clue,” said Willow
excitedly as she stood on her
tiptoes trying to see how far
the trail stretched.

The sandy path soon disappeared and was replaced by little pebbles and broken pieces of shell.
That meant the paw prints ended too!

“Don’t worry,” Grandpa said reassuringly. “We’ll keep looking.”

Wren pointed to something on the ground. On closer inspection it was Molly’s tag. “Well done
Wren!” beamed Willow cheerfully. Wren picked the tag up for Willow to see.

Nearing the end of the rocky path, everyone felt very anxious as they continued to call out Molly’s
name. They then stepped around the last bend only to find…

Molly!

She was chewing another large stick. Looking up at them, she started to wag her tail excitedly.
It was swishing rapidly, knocking some of the pebbles out of the way.

“You gave us such a fright Molly,” Willow said, bending down to give her a cuddle. They
strolled back along the path, with Molly safely plodding along on her lead.

They soon reached the bus After showing their return
stop, quite exhausted after ticket, Willow, Wren and
their little adventure. The Molly sat down at the

COASTAL CONTEMPLATION

Thoughts from the Cornish Coastline

A little book of six postcard images
By Jane Bone

CHANGING SEAS
Now late spring.
Still a freshness colouring restless waves.
Soon sliding into warm liquid summer tides
Shoreline grasses show their flowers
Flags signalling along the strand a new season’s near arrival.

SQUALL
Summer winds excite the sea
Breakers foaming round the crags.
In the thrill of the froth thrown high
Gulls perform wild, watery dances.

TEMPEST
Darkening skies
Gathering clouds
Silence …………… then a quiver in the sea
Sends storms crashing in over the bay

HORIZONS
Looking outwards
Sea and sky in a distant line.
Possibilities suspended in the waves
Anchored by static rocks

THINKING TIME
Reflections in the watery depths
Viewed from an anchored boat
Minimal movement allows reflections on life
Journeys planned but not yet made
Thoughts swirl and eddy in the liquid blue

TRANQUILITY

Far out to sea
Rocks float on liquid bands of incoming tide
Peaceful lapping on the shore signals a calmness in the day

The Time Machine
By Lee Jamieson

Daniel was a boy with a wish. A lot of people
said his wish was silly, some told him it could
never happen, others said it was impossible!

This really annoyed Daniel and occasionally it
made him feel a bit sad. However, Daniel
now knew that everyone else was wrong….
and he was right!

Last night, Daniel went to bed as he
always did, with one thing on this mind….
to own his very own TIME MACHINE!

Daniel woke up the next morning with
sleep in his eyes, a bogey on his cheek,
and a ravenous hunger for eggs and ham.

But this morning something was different. In the
corner of his room, on the floor, just under Big Frank
his super hungry goldfish, was a large and very shiny
silver box. Written on this box in large black letters
were the words TIME MACHINE.

At first Daniel thought it was just a toy or a cardboard
box covered in tinfoil, like the one he had made with his
dad on the school holidays. But this one looked
different somehow, it looked real.

Daniel walked over to it, opened the door, and went inside. It was really cool!!!! There were
buttons and dials everywhere, all different shapes and sizes, some were beeping, some were
buzzing, and the largest one was bright red with “DANGER DO NOT TOUCH” written on top of

it. In the centre was a screen and keyboard with the word “DESTINATION” above it.

Daniel really wanted to try it out and see if it worked, but there was one big problem! He was……

What if something went wrong? What if it did work and he travelled through time but he couldn’t
get back to see his family again? What if the Time Machine blew up?!!!!!

Daniel felt sure it was real, but he
also knew that if he told his
parents, they would never let him
use it. They didn’t even let him go
to the corner shop on his own.

Then Daniel had an idea….. first, he would cover it up and pretend it
was a den!

Then he would go to school as normal.

When he got there, he would ask his best friend Oliver to
come back to his house for tea. After tea, they could both
try it out together!
